Well, his full name in English would have to be "Goku Son" since Son is his last name, and the "Son Goku" ordering follows the Asian way of putting family name first.

What this speech has over the Z version is that Goku has finally accepted his role in the universe. While he is proud to call Earth his home, he finally fully acknowledges that he is not human. When he says “I am the Super Saiyan, Son Goku!”, you can hear the saiyan pride in his voice. What a beautiful moment.
Even before, when he buries Vegeta and goes to fight Freezer he says that he's a Saiyan raised on earth and that his name is Goku. He accepted to be a Saiyan and the proud of it, but not Kakarot, he was raised in the earth and his name is Goku. Also he tells Freeza that he'll kill him for all the Saiyans he killedbut also for the Namekians he murdered, showing his Saiyan pride but also his Human compassion
Super Sayian was the first time in a long while that he let his Sayian rage out, he kept all that shit bottled in since he was a toddler.
Yeah. I can certainly see why many would consider this, Goku's peak(I honestly consider this one of Goku's peaks). 😊 Goku has finally embraced his Saiyan heritage, even if he made it clear to call the earth his true home. And he did it so heroically. ❤ And I can't help but feel so uplifted every time I hear Goku's speech. ❤

Fun Fact: Sean Schemmel, Goku's English VA fought HARD to keep this line in for Kai.
They were originally going to omit Goku's full name, but because of Schemmel, we got to hear the entire speech in it's full glory and he delivers on it.
I remember screaming "FUCK YEAH" when I heard Goku's full name. It was fucking awesome to hear that.
And it came back in "Battle Of Gods" when Goku introduced himself to Beerus.
I swear, it should be under "And The Fandom Rejoiced" regarding Kai on TV Tropes.

It was in this moment that Goku realized his Saiyan heritage does't have to tie him to a fate of warmongering and senseless violence. That being a Saiyan is something that makes him strong but doesn't define who he is. That blinding rage isn't inherently good or bad, but rather it's what he decides it is. And what he decided, was that his race had already payed it's dues in hell, and that it was Frieza's turn to reap what he had sewn.

SSJ Goku's first appearance is literally the embodiment of the last bit.
Goku may like to fight, but at heart is is a gentle person overall (albeit a bit clumsy and lacking some common sense). He fights for fun and to push his limits, but not to kill, or destroy. He'd rather end a fight peacefully and with mercy than to destroy his opponent unless he is given no other choice.

@@Greekhalo2010 I know it's late, but "a night with no moon" is refering to a New Moon, the phase of the lunar cycle where the moon is hidden. The night is always darkest during a New Moon, because it means there's no moonlight to illuminate everything. Without the light we can't see, which makes us defenseless against things like dangerous predators who can see perfectly in the dark.

I mean I don’t really mind to be honest. In fact, I think the gold is better in some ways. It doesn’t look like they are actually blonde in super, it goes well with the golden aura when they transform. What I really wish they did was apply more details during the actual transformations from time to time instead of changing the hair automatically while the screen vigorously shakes.

i've always liked Kai's Rendition of Goku's super saiyan speech, he's never been a hero, always just a person trying to live life, and kai captures that so beautifully here
He might not have been trying to be a hero, but he ends up being one through his actions.
Goku IS a hero. He is just not a one that's necessarily virtuous all the time. He saved countless people with his sacrifices (Cell Sacrifice, etc)

This speech is absolutely perfect. Goku isn't "the hope of the universe." This is him accepting his saiyan heritage. The music fits perfectly. The dialogue is so good. This is what Akira Toriyama asked for. The tv show that's true to what he first created. Kai NAILD it!

Kai didn't change anything. They just stuck with the original. Funimation was the one who changed it when they first dubbed the series. That's why I prefer Kai over the original.

I literally grew up in the early 2000s with DBZ and it holds lots of nostalgic and sentimental value to me... BUT Kai is simply better. The OST, the voice acting and the new and improved script is just chef kisses. It elevated what I already loved and it brought it closer to the manga.

Probably one of the greatest parts about this is that Sean Schemmel (goku's voice actor) actually had to ask for permission to say the "Son Goku" part. He wanted to say it to not only give homage to the japanese version but to die hard fans. The reason he needed permission is because all the characters have a script that are meant for them so their flaps match up.

Reiji Arisu the "Son" in Son Goku is strictly for the japanese to you use, and the english cast can only use "goku" as mentioned before with their script provided by funimation so yes, he had to ask for permission. Not once before or after this has the english dub ever referred to Goku as Son Goku.

In Japan, family names are said before given names. While in English, you might call him "Goku Son" or, for another anime character, Naruto Uzumaki, the Japanese would say the 'last name' first - so "Son Goku" and "Uzumaki Naruto".

I like how Goku didn’t even entertain the thought of a Super Saiyan, and then he became the very thing he nudged aside. This is arguably one of the best scenes in Dragonball hands down. “I AM THE SUPER SAIYAN, SON GOKU!!”
This one is much better. Who knows Goku knows that he IS NOT the kind of character who says things like "I am the truth. I am the light in the darkness, the hope of the innocent". Goku can be arrogant sometimes, but he doesn't see himself as a hero.

This fight is about revenge, not for a greater good like saving the Universe. Goku started fighting for fun and to protect his friends, but now he is fighting only for that, revenge.

D F Technically, it is the original. Kai was created to do what Z didn’t: follow the manga. While Z was entertaining, it came at the price of butchering many parts of the story. Kai balanced the two.

DeeCee I’m honestly not sure. I guess it took creative liberties, and if that’s the case, I think they were too creative. The Ocean dub severely if not completely ruined some of the characters’ traits from the manga, and when Funimation did a redo of the Z dub, they didn’t do anything other than change a few lines, in which a lot were still inaccurate, and some of the voice actors. They both basically turned Goku’s story into somewhat of a Superman story.

This version of the speech is my favorite. Not preachy, not pretentious or rehearsed. It's just Goku telling frieza that he crossed the line before beating the snot out of him.

People that compare Goku with Superman have no idea what DB is about.
DB never started as being about an alien kid from the planet Vegeta that learned ''the American way of truth and justice'' on a farm from his adoptive parents. It was about a boy from the mountains clueless about life going on an adventure with his new friend Bulma to find the magical dragon balls to make a wish, while along the way making foes, learning about life, becoming stronger and making friends.
The beginning of Dragon Ball was based on A Journey to the West, about the monkey king Sun Wukong. Sun Wukong had a red staff. Get it? Monkey king? Goku had a monkey tail and a red staff: the power pole and he also traveled on a flying cloud. How is that based on Superman and not on Sun Wukong? Even Goku's name is based on Sun Wukong: Son-Goku.
But I will say that the Saiyan saga was inspired by Superman's story. But that doesn't make dragon ball or Goku as a whole based on Superman. The Saiyan saga was INSPIRED by Superman while the Namek Saga was clearly inspired by Star Wars. Does that make Dragon Ball a Star Wars copy or Gohan Luke Skywalker? Ofcourse not. The Andriod Saga was based on The Terminator. Does that make Trunks John Connor? Ofcourse not. It was just inspired by those movies. People that only use Superman to compare Goku don't have a clue that namek, andriods were also inspired by different things. Dragon Ball is a mixture of many different elements, fairytales, stories, movies and books. And it makes 1 hole new thing that also created many new ideas.
Dragon ball introduced a lot of anime clichés. Why did they become clichés? Because they were new at the time, and every other anime copied it and did it too. That's how it became a cliché. Without Dragon Ball there would've never been Yu Yu Hakusho or Hunter X Hunter, seeing how Togashi was inspired by Toriyama. Without Yu Yu Hakusho, HxH and Dragon Ball we would've never have gotten Bleach. Bleach was clearly inspired by YYH and also had elements from DBZ, seeing how almost all shonen take dbz elements because DB perfected it. Same goes for Naruto and even One Punch Man. OPM is basically a parody on all of these anime. Without DB these anime/manga would've never existed.

To each their own. Some of yall can’t let go of the Superman-esque Goku we grew up seeing on Toonami but I prefer Kai just because it’s a more accurate adaptation of the manga. Goku’s heroic aspect is toned down a little. It’s the way Toriyama intended him to be.

Mitch You see, but the reason Freeza is scary is because he is a huge powerful tyrant, but he is very polite and "royal" in his demeanor, specially how the thinks less of everyone around him.
The old voices wanted to make him into more of a "space monster", but it's not really his appearance or voice that should be scary, it's how cold blooded he is. Ryusei Nakao's voice in japanese also hints that it's what they intended.
Chris Ayres' Freeza is much more coherent with Freeza's personality

RIP Chris Ayres. It was amazing to finally have not only a good English Freeza, but one that rivaled and maybe even at times surpassed Ryusei Nakao (at least in Kai for sure).
It's kind of crazy how time passes. I am now quite nostalgic for Kai and the hype around FUNimation going back and redubbing it with more accurate scripts. At least among the fanbase that could look past their Toonami memories. I am not saying people cannot like what they want, because I get nostalgic for the old Z dubs even with and sometimes because of their flaws, but the Kai dub got so much blind hate just because it was different from what people were used to, and it sold poorly as a result.
I've seen the first 2 seasons of DBZ Kai and the 1st season of DBZ. I take Kai because I like the voice acting and it's not long like the original. Good thing I got all 7 seasons on DVD. Plus DBZ Kakarot on the Switch. Almost reminds me of Kai.

I agree. Even Sean Schemmel mentioned how he felt his role as Goku was an improvement over the old dub. I actually prefer the voice acting in Kai a lot better than the old crappy dub. Especially when it comes to Gohan and Frieza. The new Frieza voice definitely reminds me of the seiyuu that played as him.

Seans voice might be a bit better, but the whole speech is way worse than the original in my opinion.The original gave his character a bit more colors, like a philosophical approach..."I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace, I am protector of the innocent, I al the light in the darkness , I am truth"...instead of stating the obvious ...I mean..in this speech...he just said the most obvious shit,..that he awakened, that he is a super sayian and that he is pure of hearth and that fury awakened the power....in the first one...he made the analogy with truth, wich actually points to purity but in a more wicked way.....the first one was much,much deeper....this one is in your face and stating the obvious with very basic wording.....

@@Gecko_Zen Cant remember the manga speech, but I guess its a matter of taste.For me the original was better.In my opinnion the fact that Goku didnt completely accept his sayian nature made him evolve.I mean, he was kind hearted because of earth, and felt that rage because his friend died.He awakened those feelings towards others on earth.Even at the end of dbz, Vegeta points this out when he shows ssj3 Goku respect.Basically, his humanized personality helped his sayian DNA evolve, but his evolution was because of the sayian DNA.That is my perspective, and I think that the naked Vegeta speech pointed his sayians origins enough, I feel like this one should've been more focused on Goku's convictions.

Seems like people can't just appreciate both. They have to hate Kai from being different from the DBZ they experienced during childhood. Then they hate the music for not being the same instead of seeing it as an opportunity to have more music to enjoy. Besides, why the heck would Funimation hire Bruce when he TRIED TO SUE them for not being hired to compose GT... And last I heard Faulconer Productions was bankrupt.

Oh definitely. This version of Goku's speech is superior. However, the music is so bleh for me. I wish it was this plus Falconer, or at least this plus the original Japanese music. Kai's music just doesn't do it for me.

@@sonnyboi1761 It may just be because I watched Kai first (a lot of people liked the original simply because they watched it first) but honestly watching the original dragon ball dub makes Gohan sound like hes been smoking his whole life. A lot of other voices are practically the same but slightly better in kai like Vegeta. The only voice I liked more in the original was Gokus, hes the only voice with a drastic difference.

Ill admit this speech is miles better than the original dbz speech! Especially at 1:11! Apprently that line is right out of the manga! Why didnt the original dbz use it its way more impactful and meaningfull! If you see at the original dub, when goku smirked and said "i am the hope of the universe" it sounded like he said that without any feelings, like a robot i would say. Where as the kai version, you can sense his feelings when he said "you havent figured it out yet"
