the jigsaw is definitely a safer way to do it but harder to get smooth lines

Yes this was just a micro example. Just apply the same concept and space the baseboard up at the two ends so after the scribe cut the ends match the base in the corners

I hired a contractor to do a full reno on my home and when I asked about the awful gaps between the baseboards and the floor…. he said “I pressed down as hard as I could when I nailed them”. 😳He was supposed to have taken his time on them as I paid extra for a finishing carpenter.
Yeah depends how bad the floor is. If it is really bad, I will scribe them. If it's only a 1/16 or something I'll ley it slide cause it can be hard to get it perfect. I would say 90% of homeowners don't even notice things like that. I notice everything and gaps drive me insane!
Do you caulk the baseboards to the flooring? Mine are floating and the builders caulked them to the floor. Seems wrong

You can also scribe with a washer that has the same width as the largest gap.

Could I use this same principle for ceiling molding? When I went to install crown molding on closet it was out of level by 1 inch from ceiling
you want to cut 1 inch off it?? You probably could just be very careful. You should set the table saw on the correct angle that it needs to sit against the ceiling. BE SAFE!

So you didn’t need to worry about the top of the board being level?
nope. I would rather be parallel than level. If the floor is out of level and you put the baseboard level it will look off. to the naked eye if it's just a little out of level you can't tell and it looks straight. It's down on the floor so it's really hard to see it anyways

The wood should always rest against the fence. This reckless method will get you kickback.
True, I forget that people watching youtube are not as experienced as m,yself. I've never had a freehand cut lose control. In fact the only time I had a board spin out on me was when i was using the fence...... that was like 15 years ago though

Thanks for the very helpful video. Does this tip work for the long baseboards with more than one "bump" on the floor? I have about an 8 foot wall that have several unevenness from hardwood flooring.
but makes the baseboard shorter than the rest if the gap is large enough
yep always have to start with the lowest point. takes pre-planning. I will usually precut the room and not nail it in, then scribe as needed
by drawing a line with drafting compas you are repeating the lump of the floor on the base molding

How much more would it cost a baseboard installation if the entire house floor is uneven
it's definitely a lot more work to scribe it to the floor. A lot of guys probably will just slap the baseboard down and not pay attention to the gaps. But anyone good should be able to scribe it pretty close in one try like I did in this video. That being said it is much more time consuming to scribe it than to simply cut to length and nail it in
@@BorsellinoHomeServices I just did a job where the entire was installed by someone who was not very good there multiple gaps on every panel. Just going to grout and hope for the best. Even if it was scribed it would look wavy all over the place.

@@davidm834 My local lumberyard has a local guy who does the sharpening. He comes every thursday, picks up blades, tools, knives etc, and then brings them back the following thursday! He will even replace carbide teeth if they are missing!

Yeah I guess it's not a "beginners" way to use a saw. I've never had any issues and I've freehanded A LOT of cuts on a table saw. The only time I've ever had problems with cutting on a table saw was while using a fence...
Nonetheless... results came out great.

When you use a drill, do you put your hand underneath the bit? Nope? You keep your hands away from the spinning sharp things.
I use a mini circ saw or belt sander for stuff like this

Good fix..but the downfall of this method is that the shaved off surface is prone to get damaged if got wet or damp... that's why the cut edge is always kept on top side...
if you put the cut edge on top that completely defeats the purpose of scribing it. You never want a cut edge on top. I'm really confused by this statement. If you are in an area that is prone to moisture I would suggest priming the bare wood AND caulking it to the floor. But I don't know why you'd have water all over the floor anyways, it would ruin the flooring
@@BorsellinoHomeServices I'm not trying to say your method is wrong.. just pointing out the possible consequences of bare, unprotected wood... the floor is not supposed to be flooded to do the damage... even moisture or mopping the floor can spoil the edges.. (even the protected surface do get damaged over the time)...I perfectly understand that you HAVE to cut the lower edge to match the contour or uneven surface of the floor...
@@sureshpeshawaria347 I would use his method (albeit with a hand plane and not a table saw) and then prime the raw wood edge. I would probably not worry about painting it with top coat as that edge isn't seen. Just prime it to protect from moisture.
The top edge needs to be straight…the entire point of a scribe is for the cut to follow the waves and bumps of the floor

A shoe mould will take care of it.
If that was the style of the house then yes. I personally don't like the look of shoe molding.
Isn’t there supposed to be a small gap between baseboard and wood flooring, to allow for expansion?
Shoe moulding is for trash pigs
