    If you’re using any softwood (pine, for, etc) the stain will absorb in patchy areas. That can be great if you want the rustic look in the video. If your space requires something with a more even look, apply pre-stain conditioner to your wood. It will allow the stain to absorb evenly, and give you a great showroom type look. Also make sure to sand, sand, sand, and sand some more in gradually increasing grit if you want a more polished look.
    Great bench, great plans, great videos!

      its easy to make because its a very bad build that wont stand up to much heavy use. There is no strength in this build, she didnt even make sure the legs were square with eachother.
      If you are going to do a job, do it well, not half arsed otherwise you will end up with a poor quality piece of crap.

  • @SeekerOfLight
    @SeekerOfLight 3 года назад +15

    This is a cute simple design, and I appreciate your efforts in making the video. One big thing I didn't see is anywhere you screwed you NEED wood glue. The screws are going to loosen up over time and technically they're only there to hold tight until the glue sets and makes the full bond. I've learned this the hard way on other projects. Anyone wanting to make this, use glue on any surface that you have held together with screws.

    • @faithchamness5810
      @faithchamness5810 3 года назад +1

      I'm trying to make this bench less unstable, what would you suggest adding to it other than wood glue on the screwed joints? Thanks

    • @SeekerOfLight
      @SeekerOfLight 3 года назад

      @@faithchamness5810The glue will help tremendously but if you're looking to get a little fancy you can use dowels as a joiner between the each of the 2x8 boards. It's a classic/strong/cheap way or doing it. But your holes nee to be precise, so that can be harder than other methods. If you don't have a router or a table saw to create a tongue and groove, or a biscuit joiner. It's the way to go. Just remember, put glue in the holes and on the dowels themselves. Then clamp them together for at least 15min but I normally wait overnight before working with it to give the glue time to really set up. Also, you can't in this design, but if you have a different style legs, then you can gusset them with a little triangle of wood to add to the lateral support.

    • @faithchamness5810
      @faithchamness5810 3 года назад

    I'm someone who built something similar, and want to point out something. When you buy stock 2x4 or 2x6, they are not always flat, and may be different widths. You want to make sure you use ones that are as flat as possible, or you will need a planer (expensive) to flatten them. Secondly, make a cross brace. Not having it is pretty, but in terms of functionality, you will get some wobble if you don't cross brace the legs, even simple small ones from the side of the leg to the seat (45 degrees).

    I thought I'd throw my two cents in. I made two of the benches. I'm pleased with them. I put four coats of water based spar polyurethane on them after sanding and rounding the edges a bit. I received a few critiques about my work not rising to fine cabinetry, but I wasn't making a Hepplewhite sideboard. I wanted some inexpensive benches to place next to a campfire that might get left out in the rain a couple times. The low cost, and ease of construction really appealed to me. I thank you for posting the video and I thought it was shot very well. Me? I'm a belt and suspenders sort of guy so I put glue on the 2X4 pieces before putting the screws in, and I used a finishing nail to hold the pieces together where I wanted them before pre-drilling the holes for the deck screws I used. I hope no one perceives these suggestions as criticisms, because as I said, I liked the video and it inspired me to make THEIR version of a bench instead of one of the other 6 or 7 benches shown on youtube.

    • @pershop4950

      I think that's the important thing to remember. This is not some bench that we are going to sell at a trade show for hundreds of dollars. It is a simple bench that we might use on the patio or fireplace area, and it might even get left outside in the weather a lot.
      Or it might be used to put plants on it, so that we raised up the plants by about 16" instead of having them on the ground. As such, this kind of quick design for 15-30 mins of cutting and construction time, is quite useful.

      I hear you. My wife and I went through the same thing. I have never seen an industry with more slackers and irresponsible people. You can definitely do things faster, better, and more intelligently without most construction workers. There are good ones out there, but they are far and few between.

      Love it! 🔥 Many times we're just paying people for the convenience anyway. So, when the convenience is gone what's the point? We can do a lot of the things we shell out money for...plus some.

    Great work! Lot of haters out there. But the stuff you build is about 100X better than the particle board junk you'd get in a department store. Looks pretty good too. But I think a basic Kreg jig (or cheaper knock-off, mine was $26) would open up a lot of doors for you (pun intended).

    I just built this today. I went to Lowe's. The 2-8-8 was $6.04, a 2-4-12 (which was 4' longer than I needed) was $5.58
    I just asked them to cut me the pieces. I bought a sanding block and some 2 1/2" screws. Not expensive at all.
    It's not "perfect" due to warping in the 2x8 that I picked, but it's a nice solid bench that I'm using in my bedroom, and as someone with very limited woodworking skills, I'm pleased with the result.

      great what was total cost

    • @PlatinumDragonProductions999
      @PlatinumDragonProductions999 5 лет назад

      I don't have the itemized receipt from my trip that day to Lowe's, but the total for my trip that day was $25.41 I got all of the wood, a box of 2 1/2" construction screws, a sanding block and some 220 grit sandpaper for that price. I think I also bought a spray bottle that day too (around $5?), but I can't be sure. If you just buy the wood and screws for the bench, it should be about $17 depending on your local prices.
      I returned on a different trip to get stain, paint brush, tarp etc. because I will be using those items on the pieces that I build later.

      Christy Lynn right anyone who has looked into woodworking knows they cut the wood for you

    • @Mixwell1983
      @Mixwell1983 6 лет назад +32

      Christy Lynn while they will cut some for you they will not do your whole cut list. Maybe 2-3 cuts max. I worked at the service desk for a year and it was lumber and tile cuts people wanted from the depts. Flooring aisle was in front of the service desk and people wanted special cuts and cutouts and we told them no. Just straight simple cuts and only 2-4ish. I remember someone getting pissed because the flooring dept wouldnt cut a semi circle for someone tiling around a bathroom. They will not cut your whole project for you and forget about angled cuts such as miters and bevels. They have a cross cut saw and a saw for plywood for rough cuts and thats it. Besides after working there i had them cut a few pieces of dimentional lumber which only to find out when getting home the cuts were off. I just tell them to cut something like a 2x4x8 in half so i can fit it into my car and i do the real cuts at home.
      If you are real hard up for a table saw or a miter saw get a cheap circular saw and a speed square and you can do a lot of your cuts on that for cheap. Go to harbor freight and get an inexpensive circ saw or jigsaw. If you cannot afford basic woodworking tools then you shouldnt attempt woodworking.
      You cant have a screwdriver and a drill and expect to build everything. Just as a mechanic cannot have only a hammer and duct tape and expect to fix everything. You have to build up your tool supply and if you are anything like me theres nothing better than having a few speciality tools for thejob.. I
      Ie.. I dont do alot of plumbing but i have a basin wrench and i invested in a $15 ferrule puller which if you had to change a water valve you know is a nightmare. You either pull the ferrule off with a proper tool or you keep the old ferrule on or you hacksaw or dremel it. Now i am not a plumber but if you are a home owner this specific tool is well worth it.. I have in the past i had taken a crecent wrench and tightened it just enough to leave room from the pipe but hit the ferrule. I have vice gripped it and tried hammering it off where the ferrule tool does it in less than 1 min. A must have. Anyways like they say the right tool for the right job.
      Sorry I didnt mean to write an essay and go off topic. Its harder to explain through text and verbal.

    My granddog will be 16 yrs old in Sept. My daughter says he's having problems getting off their bed, so I was looking on RUclips for a easy bench to make and I found you. I am going to (try) and make one, but I will be adding a foam/pad cover to the top so it's softer for my granddog. Now to see get my supplies ready!
