The overhang gives it a little different profile, but I think you need an extra board to add the extra 1/8" to all 12 of the 13.5"ers. Cut list I see is... 1) 6 boards with 1x60 and 2x17 2) 2 boards with 1x60, 1x17, 1x13.625 3) 1 board with 7x13.5 4) 1 board with 5x13.5 and 2x13.625 The two boards in #3 and #4 are the problem. Even if you don't square the end, the extra 1/8" 5-7 more times puts you over 96", once you factor in an 1/8" blade kerf. You could technically do a couple more pieces at the longer length. I may do 2 or 3 longer on each end and the middle shorter
I had the same question but I just made it and because woods are not perfectly squared it is hard to flush all of them. Just having four flushed is a lot easier than having all of them flushed. otherwise it just take one for the bench to wobble.
Hey - love it. Can’t work out why that initial overhang though? Surely once the right way up it will cause a little wobble? Any explanation much appreciated.
Thank you for the great tutorial, I just made this bench and it turned out great! I found a few tutorials for this bench online, but felt yours was the most detailed and easy to understand. 2 things I did differently… I used wood glue only (no nails or screws). My bench will be used more for decorative purposes, but I’m still not afraid to sit on it (or have multiple people sit on it) I also used Fusion Mineral Paint in Aloquin for the paintwash instead of Behr 😊
@@joeymadera1 unfortunately more than $60. I live in Southwestern Pennsylvania and went to my local Home Depot. 1x4x8 white wood boards were $7 and some change a piece so almost $80 for wood alone. The wood glue was $8, paint was $30, and minwax wood filler was around $10. You can save some by buying cheaper paint (any tan paint would work to do a paint wash. Fortunately I already have polyurethane and sand paper at home. IMO I still think it was worth it because I can’t find any solid wood benches for $130, plus I get the satisfaction of making it myself. Good luck!
Would not dream of skipping ahead. You are making this doable for me. Cause I have those tools But I have a question: are not the screws running into each other at the upper corners?
This looks great was thinking of doing this with 2x4s but the 1x4 would be better for a in door bench... Curious as to why you did the out side leg pieces to a different length?
H!! hey I have a question, is there a reason for leaving the vertical pieces on the far ends a weee bit longer than the rest? I mean the external or exposed vertical pieces in front and back...being a weee bit longer. Thanks for all the great stuff!
I tried this project. Not as easy as I thought. Unfortunately you need to have lumber from the big box store that is Both straight and not cupped. Good luck finding that! Great idea but needs flat and straight wood otherwise you will have a lot of sanding and filling of gaps which is very time consuming.
I am building three of these but with Im alternating between 2x4s with a 1x4 spacer. I have completed one and am building the second bench and they are both twisted. I have tried go replace the pieces that I think are causing the problem but haven’t been able to untwist it. I’ve searched all over RUclips in hopes I could find a method but to no avail… can anyone help me?
I wonder if you would have any bowing in the middle. I know it would be harder since the boards are on the short side. Might just add another leg in the middle for additional support and look.
I'm curious why you wouldn't just use glue for everything. Just get glue that cures a bit slower. Put all together and clamp or set something heavyish on top, both legs. No screws no hole fill.
Great tutorial! If i wanted to make this an outdoor/patio friendly bench exposed to the elements, what additional considerations should i keep in mind?
Use cedar, cypress, or redwood. The problem with treated wood is it’s a surface treatment only. Once the board is cut, the exposed interior is not treated, therefore consider an additional expense to treat those areas.
Hi! Nice project! I'm gonna try and do one! I was just wondering if there is something wrong, .... if the 60s are 4" and the first small piece is 13 5/8 and the 2nd small piece is 17" then the overhang should be 5/8" and not 1/8" ¿Right? I normally use cm and i'm trying to convert it... thats why my doubts....
Beautiful i love it. Question for you... what kind of lumber do you use? I am always lost when going into a shop as to which kind of wood can be used for what kind of project...
The slightly longer pieces on the ends will act as the four legs for the bench. If they were all the same size they would need to line up perfectly to avoid wobbling.
Mhm assumption is for stability. Ground won’t be perfectly flat that you sit the bench on, the elevation change should help the bench from rocking instead of all the feet being the same length. Just my guess
The Norwegians are crazy good at simplistic, clean, robust design. They are after all the Real Vikings (not like the fake dannish and sweddish "vikings").

I really like how you choose simple builds.
It sure makes a beginner feel accomplished, not overwhelmed.
Picked up 10 western cedar boards, worked the math and wound up 4' long 14" wide x 17" high for a 100 buckaroos. Thank You for this awesome build!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Beautifully simple...Simply beautiful...thank you for sharing!
Great easy diy. Can't wait to do this project.
I love this idea. One silly question though, Why have the 1/8" overhang on each leg end? Why not just all flush to the ground?

I’m interested in this as well? Do you trim when finished?
I also question the value, though I think the longer wood is on both ends, not just the start?
My understanding is that only the outer woods would touch on the floor instead of all the woods. Less scratch marks on the wooden floor.
OMGEEEEE WHY'S THIS SO BEAUTIFUL AND SIMPLE. I absolutely LOVE this. Thank you for sharing ❤ I'm doing this. Lol. I want to make a lounge chair also 😂
This bench is gorgeous!! I love the color!! Thank you for sharing this awesome build!! : )
Glad you like it!
Did something similar to this a few years ago for an entertainment unit. Added in a stationary shelf and another shelf on wheels.

How much did it cost you? Cause I can’t find wood anywhere to match this price

Your Video's are so therapautic to watch and to learn from 👌.

I have same question, maybe moving every other for 1 cm closer to the middle 🤷♀️
Simple build and looks good, nice work! 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
First of all, awesome video!!
I'm calculating it with CM here..
But how wide is your wood?
Looking forward to an answer!!
10 times
1"x4" by 8'
This looks great was thinking of doing this with 2x4s but the 1x4 would be better for a in door bench... Curious as to why you did the out side leg pieces to a different length?
Curious about this too
Made the bench out of maple (so heavy!) I need to finish it and trying to figure out the right color of wood putty for cracks
Absolutely fabulous job on this start to finish.
Cool design! Love how you explained things so well.
Thank you, I try!
Was a planer used at any point during this project?
Cool but why the over hang on only one set of support boards
Looks really really nice. Planning to make one. Thank you.
How did you flatten out the base of the legs? Because while it was laying on its side, you could see that there were a few boards that were not flush.
Can buy a miter saw at Home Depot for 10 and 15 for a good one. No batteries or outlets needed.
Is there a pattern to use when inserting the screws, so that they don’t run into each other as you add the layers of wood?
I just alternated from going a little closer to the edge to a little further in and didn't have any issues.
Thank you!
13 5/8" instead of 17cm. Gotta love those freedom units. :D
Love this bench❤❤ Thank You for sharing!!!
Any time!
Thank you so much for this - put together perfectly for me to follow.
You're welcome!
I love this little project. It's given me an idea for a variation of the same design, using a similar build process with curves. Thanks!
Could you potentially make this bench 2-3 boards wider, width wise? I don’t think it would anything else, right? Besides a few screws..
H!! hey I have a question, is there a reason for leaving the vertical pieces on the far ends a weee bit longer than the rest? I mean the external or exposed vertical pieces in front and back...being a weee bit longer. Thanks for all the great stuff!
If I was to make a guess it would be to help with an unlevel surface. I'm thinking of making one of these but maybe having two layers of long boards.
So glad lumber prices have gone down!!!!
Not that I’ve noticed in Australia, but no surprises there.
I like this idea but I would probably make mine to fit the ikea trones under.
Looks amazing! What type of wood did you use? Thanks
Really awesome! Thanks!
You're welcome!
Why is there overhang on the first one?
Random question but I take it you can screw the screws in at each level and it won’t hit the others?
Man I can’t find any 1x4’s at Home Depot or Lowe’s that are worth a crap. Maybe 1 at each store after digging and digging, so frustrating.
Never heard that name before but when I think about it there are a lot of them here
Nice design! I would never drill into a workpiece directly over a finished floor. Also, why not build it on saw horses or a bench?
Which song is it?
Do you have plans for the bench
Great job ! Thinking about doing it soon… do you have the mesures in Cm ?
it is very nice, I am wondering how heavy it is
Love it! Inspired me to make today… or at least start! Thanks for the great tutorial!
thank you well explained. Best wishes
So dope! Love this easy tutorial build 💪🏼
Appreciate it!!

where did you get the lumber from? I went to both home depot and lower and every single piece they had was crooked, dirty with a bunch of scratches
Where i can get the brush you used for in-between the pieces of wood
Great job. Thanks!
Great idea
I mean great design
Why do you have leave the two end foot board longer? like 1/2 inch longer than the rest
It avoids the possibility of rocking, the longer pieces act as legs rather than trying to have all of the pieces line up exactly.
Is this bench too low? Or good height?
What is the point of the 1/8" overhang, also why not use metric its so much easier.
Yeah I'm confused on the benefit of the overhang, seems it would put a lot of pressure on those two thin end pieces.
Liz gone getting some new wood.

Why not make all the support legs equal lengths?
Cool. So ypu point overhang. How did ypu fix it?
The Best!
Aww thanks!
What is the name of the wood, if I may ask?
I'm curious why you wouldn't just use glue for everything. Just get glue that cures a bit slower. Put all together and clamp or set something heavyish on top, both legs. No screws no hole fill.
My thoughts too. That’s a lot of screws (expensive) and glue would make the sides/legs bind into a single slab much better.
what kind of wood is it??
Great tutorial! If i wanted to make this an outdoor/patio friendly bench exposed to the elements, what additional considerations should i keep in mind?
Thanks! You could use cedar or treated boards and you should be just fine...
Use cedar, cypress, or redwood. The problem with treated wood is it’s a surface treatment only. Once the board is cut, the exposed interior is not treated, therefore consider an additional expense to treat those areas.
Just wonderful. I want to buy your book. It's it available in South Africa?
Thank you! That is a great question, one I unfortunately don't have the answer to...
Seems like a lot of screws, is it really really sturdy?
In theory a screw in alternating corners (TL+BR then TR+BL) would have sufficed?
Hi! Nice project! I'm gonna try and do one!

Hi thanks for checking! A 4" board in the US is in actuality only 3 1/2" (confusing I know). Hope this helps!
❤ I like your work ❤
Thank you!
I can’t seem to find the tutorial for the whitewash what exactly did you use to paint it please share ?
Hi, I put a disclaimer on this vid that the paintwash tutorial won't be out until this week. Stay tuned!
the legs are uneven length. Did you do something afterwards?
I saw that as well.
Why so many screws ? Is it not better gluing it together ?
Yes, for permanent builds, gluing is a must. All the screws do is clamp everything together. The glue provides a much stronger build.
Thanks! Can I make my bench longer? For example 80 inch long, will it hold?
That shouldn't be a problem
I always like these weekend build you guys do. Really nice design, nice finish choice.
Thanks so much!
Looking forward to making this but my back is killing me watching you work on the floor.
Beautiful i love it. Question for you... what kind of lumber do you use? I am always lost when going into a shop as to which kind of wood can be used for what kind of project...
Pine.
May I know what kind of wood you used? Does the wood you bought have a 90 degree edge or round edge?
I used pine board with a 90 degree edge
Why leaving an overhang
I really like
glue is stronger than screws
Looks great! how much weight could this hold?
Thanks! It's a tank so quite a lot haha...
Look great
Thank you!
What did you do for the over hung piece in the beginning?
The slightly longer pieces on the ends will act as the four legs for the bench. If they were all the same size they would need to line up perfectly to avoid wobbling.
I was asking the same 🙂...
How many screws did you use totally
I got a pack of 100 and ran out. It was a major bummer!
Cool bench, but what happened to Liz?
Someone asking the real question 😅
At least we know the dog is still alive.
We are missing for Liz!
He’s probably free now 🎉

I can’t find the exact screws you’re using. I bought the size you said. The ones I bought also are splitting the wood. What type of wood are you using
I used pine boards for this. Are you predrilling the holes before screwing? That should solve the splitting issue.
Nice job,,,but,,,you should have painted all of your pieces before assembling!!!…A lot easier…
No way to make this for $60. The wood alone is gonna be over $100.
Plis por favor convierte a centímetros las medidas
In what world is this a $60 bench?
This didn't even cost $60 six months ago, more like 120
The boards alone are over 120 dollars, so I don't know where you live that it cost $60.
Depends on the quality of board. I just bought 10 midgrade, which looks great, it cost a little over $40.
Click bait.
Why are you always doing this crap on the floor? 😂
