Hi Keith. I heard that you live on Long Island NY. If that’s true, I was wondering where you buy your wood? Im relatively new to woodworking but wanted to buy some hardwoods on the Island. I live on the north shore close to Huntington. I’ve been following your channel for a little while and enjoy your creative style. Good stuff 👍
New subscriber, thanks for the video. I watched another video on how to build one of there the other day and it sparked my interest. I have to say, I was shocked on how much the wood cost for this. Pretty much makes it a 400$ bench. Gosh, I wish I had a domino but it’s not in the budget right now. Nor do I want to buy/ use a dado blade. There an obvious work around on the dado but wondering what you you recommend in place of the domino. I've got a question about the domino. I don't own one, so I simply don't know the answer. Why do you always use 2 dominos for each joint instead of 1? Is it better for strength of the joint?
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking ah I didn't consider that it gives more long grain to long grain. And the twist prevention makes a lot of sense. Thanks Keith!
I think so! Sapele mahogany is rot resistant, so shouldn't be any issue there. However, with the intense weather, any finish applied will most likely need to be refreshed every 1-2 years.

Second is about the Festool drills and impacts. And I see you also own some Makita tools which is what I currently use. My question is, besides Festool's general quality, is there really any reason to pay so much for their drills/impacts when Makita's stuff is already really good?
In this case, those little notches aren't noticeable because the half lap joint covers the. And Makita and Dewalt drills are all perfectly fine. I just like the small Festool ones because they are light and maneuverable and fit my hand well. The right angle attachment makes getting into tight spots much easier. Hey Keith, awesome work as always! I was just curious why you didn’t add floor levelers on the bottom of the feet like you usually do. I figured outdoors would be more likely to be un-level, also it would help to protect it from water pooling at the legs. Was it just an aesthetic decision or did you think it was unnecessary for some reason?
Good question! Honestly, I sealed the end grain with epoxy so I'm not really worried about water damage. And I've never seen a floor leveler that was built for outdoor use, unless you fabricate something from stainless steel parts. And have you ever seen levelers on outdoor furniture like an Adirondack chair or even wooden table chairs? I haven't. 😜👊
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Thanks Keith! I built an outdoor bench and copied your dado sled jig idea which was super helpful. no sanding between coats. 1 hour between coats. complete finishing in 1 day... I had to go back and rewatch just for that. This is the gold standard. I'm very interested to see what this bench will look like after 2 years sitting in the sun and elements. The best I've ever used for outdoor furniture is waterlox and even that needs a heavy hand of upkeep with direct sun after a year or 2.
I'm sure it will require some maintenance...no finish is impervious to the elements. But if I can just spray on a couple coats to revive it, then it's definitely a win. 👍
Very nice!. You consistently put out excellent work, and this is just the latest example. I do have one question. At the 10min mark you do a dry fit and check for square, and of course it's perfect. But if it wasn't, what would you do to correct it?
Thanks very much! If first readings showed it was out of square, I would have to troubleshoot and double check all my cuts and make sure they are exactly 90 and square to another and go from there.
Nice!! I might add Sapele to my to-do list for a shower bench Idea I have, I'm currently building a house and will have a decent-sized shower to have one in. I'll have to consider grabbing your plan as well.
Just subscribed with the NPH video as suggested by Jason. Great content and editing skills. I had a cat that looked very much like your gray one. You do what you have to do with the tools you have. You could also make half the amount of cuts and then snap off all those pieces and clean up with a chisel.
Keith, have you had good luck with durability of the Halcyon finish over the years with outdoor products? How long does it last? I really enjoy the videos and ideas. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Jacob! I haven't used it for very long, so I can't vouch for it's longevity over time and being outside in the elements with rain, snow, etc. Check back in a year! 😜👍
Oh, did you stop by and sit on it? Because it’s actually quite comfortable. If the seat slats were further apart, it would not be, but that’s why they were spaced the way they are. It’s not by happenstance that they are 1 inch apart and no further. I do actually test for comfort. Nothing is by accident.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Yes it's your bench made for you. i get it. Not for guests . lets say children or other adults who have a different sit bone width. Not to mention shifting yr weight a bit (what every body does sitting for a period of time).

Super clever work on that sled. Dare I say ... Genius tier ! When it comes to the total boat thixxo , is it a one shot use for the tube or tip? or does it last for multiple uses.
Thanks Alec!! So, the tube is multiple uses until gone, but the tips are one shot use only. I forgot to mention it, but it is a 2-part epoxy that mixes in the tip and once it hardens, it's done. What I do is leave the tip on until next time, remove it and pop on a new one. You can purchase more tips separately as well. You do pay a little more for the convenience, but it's worth it to me for a tidier glue up.

Thanks so much! I greatly appreciate the feedback. Sometimes I wish my footage was more cinematic and then I realize that's a lot more work for little reward 😜. Thanks for your support!
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Substance over style here
@@planespeaking That's a nice way to put it! Thanks!
Such exquisite work, as always! You had me rolling with your frozen burger patty analogy. 😅
😂 Thanks man! Brought back some childhood memories with that one! 😜
Nice bench. Looks strong enough for an elephant to practice doing back flips on.
I can confirm that is true. I had it tested. 😂
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking AH HA, just as I thought. lol
So this podcast of yours is the Seinfeld of podcasts.
Giddy up!!
no sanding between coats.
Awesome! Thanks! And congrats on the new house!!
Just subscribed with the NPH video as suggested by Jason. Great content and editing skills. I had a cat that looked very much like your gray one. Mine was a tuxedo though mixed with a white diamond on his chest, tips of his paws and just a touch on the nose. Best cat I ever owned. Thought he was a dog.
Thanks so much for the sub and the kind words! So great to hear about your cat! I don’t know what we would do without these two gray chuckleheads 😹
Your videos are the best. The mix of amazing woodworking and witty comments are great. I find it a shame all your videos don’t get the millions of views those couple got. Getting rid of “Senior gappo” was so funny but also showed how prestige your work is
Thanks a lot, Matt! I really appreciate the support and the kind words. Unfortunately, you just can't control how successful videos are, but that won't stop me from posting! More on the way!
I can't imagine how someone could cut the dados with a standard
. 500 passes and 10 years later
Everything you build is amazing
Thank you very much!! 🙌
_"Some serious alliteration"_ haha
😜😂
Yet, another fine video!!!! Love the work you do, it's very inspirational!!!
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you so much 😀
Typical form over function. looks nice but very uncomfortable to sit on.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking i guess it's very bottom dependent then :-D
@@shrike6259 My bony a$$ finds it quite comfortable
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Yes it's your bench made for you. i get it. Not for guests . lets say children or other adults who have a different sit bone width. Not to mention shifting yr weight a bit (what every body does sitting for a period of time).
@@shrike6259 my niece, nephew, wife, sister, brother and next door neighbors all sat on it and had no complaints. Your point has zero validity.
Pretty dang nice sir! Always a pleasure to find a KJCW video in my que. Thanks for posting.
Right on, Jeff!! I appreciate it. And thanks for watching! 👍
220 dollars for the timber, 15,000 for the power tooling!
Didn’t happen overnight bro
Very nice! Guessing price tag starting around $600?
Quite a bit more than that.
love seeing every video you make
you are a master at your craft
as a DIY woodworker, i can appreciate the extra steps you take to properly do things and how precise you are
i also love seeing you use the tools i wish i had LOL
Thanks so much!! That’s very kind 🙏🏻👍🏻
1 minute into your video and i subscribed. I love the fact you gave exact pricing on the wood. Most say they got it for free or "found it ".
Awesome! Thank you! And I appreciate the feedback on the pricing. It seems to be quite a popular feature 😂
Looks amazing Keith 👍🏻😉
Thanks very much, Anders!!
cool
thanks man!! 👍
Beautiful work as always my friend. Really dug the sled you built for that. Awesome.
Thanks so much! Hopefully I will be able to use it on another project and won't just sit in the barn like some other one trick ponies I've made. 👍
Gorgeous work!
(And it’s champing at the bit… just FYI.)
Thanks! And my wife has been riding horse for 30 years...those phrases are interchangeable.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Dang! Touché!
