How to Build a Super Sturdy and Cost Effective Garden Bench \\ Home Decor \\ Woodworking Challenge

  • Today's woodworking project is all about building a stylish, super sturdy, and cost effective garden bench. I was challenged by Jeff, The Weekend DIYer, to add to our home decor and build a garden bench. So I turned to my wife, Amy from the White Lab House, to come up with a design. What she found was an excellent chance for me to build something that looks good, yet doesn't cost much to make. In fact, it was only about $10 in materials at the local home center! I also thought it would be fun to loop in one of daughters to be a shop buddy for the day. Simple projects are excellent for involving your kids for some quality bonding time!
    Here's Jeff's garden bench build over at The Weekend DIYer: • Farmhouse Style Garden...

    This bench is solid as can be and only cost us about $10 in materials! Can't go wrong with some great decor on the cheap! How did we do? Thanks for watching!

    Even with "simple" builds, the precision of your projects is spot on. I have never seen such a dark stain but the contract with the top is awesome. Your young assistant deserves a larger allowance for the exceptional work she did. especially showing everyone proper use of safety equipment. Great job !!!!

    Thank you for sharing such a simplistic design. Most of my time was spent making cross cut sledge to use for making lap joints. Once I got that done, making the bench was a breeze. Though I used 2x6x10ft redwood to cut 2 46inch slabs for top. Did a two tone look as well. Came out really nice and my wife loved it. Happy woodworking with your family.

  • @teddysmith2290
    @teddysmith2290 2 года назад

    What's keeping the legs from giving out laterally? You guys should put a crossbar connecting the legs in the back.

    • @WhiteLabWorkshop
      @WhiteLabWorkshop  2 года назад

      This bench is surprisingly stable as-is. However, a cross-bar would certainly help, if lateral support is a concern. It really depends on your use case. Ours is an occasional use situation.

  • @shellymillerleer

    I just rewatched this video. How could I create a similar bench without the fancy table saw or tenon jig? Is it possible?

    • @WhiteLabWorkshop
      @WhiteLabWorkshop  2 года назад +2

      It’s definitely possible. There’s a number of ways that you could do it, depending on what tools you have. A circular saw would work. Or a hand saw, if nothing else. Just do some searching for different ways to do half lap joints with the tools in your arsenal.

      Normally, I’d say give a shot and find out! It should be no more than $15 in materials. BUT, these aren’t normal times! So it might cost 3x that much now. It definitely won’t budge for one of you, and I bet you’d both be just fine. The half laps in the legs really firm things up.
