  • Update: March 9 2022 You can get the Tab 7A lite at Dell.com at $129.99, with Rakuten (2% rebate) and my credit card with 2% rebate, The total cost is $125 for a new one.
    DJI Fly App cannot be installed on the low end smart phones. I have been looking for a low cost solution to control my DJI Mavic Mini. I found the 'open box' Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite for $99.99 at EBay. Very often, you can get the same tablet at $99.99 on Amazon (the renew version). The initial test showed this tablet works fine with DJI Fly V1.5.10. The tablet is running Android 11. The 8.7" form factor is better for me than the 10-11" tablet. It is lighter and the screen is big enough for me. A simple test showed the brightness of the tablet is good if the sun is not behind me. The 'open box' tablet is very nice, looks and works like a new one. It comes with the original accessories also.

    Thanks for making this video. I might get that tablet. Wha i really want is the new tripltek 8. Its not cheap but it's amazing. Military grade and 1200 nits of brightness so is fine in bright sun. I am putting aside money.

      Thanks for your support! You have good taste! 😀 Yes Tripltek 8 would be nice. My drone kit is less than $300 and may be I should upgrade my drone first then consider getting the Tripltek. Cheers!

      Yes, I want to work on my foam boats but I don't want to cut the foam inside my garage because of the smell. Unfortunately the outdoor temperature is still too cold. I am still targeting to test the to be built boats around the middle of next month and use the boats for crabbing at the end of April :-) Please stay tuned!

      @@alexshatner3907 That tablet is not designed for outdoor use under the sun. Therefore I used paper to make a sun shade to block off the sun. You can buy one on-line also.

    Maybe, but the problem is flying in bright light outside like 99% of quadcopter owners. Which budget tablets are brightest that have been driven to use in sunlight WITHOUT the use of a additional shade visor accessories or having to fly in shaded area?

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  2 года назад +2

      I used to design computers, handheld products such as tablet, etc. There is a min. requirement for the brightness of a tablet, or notebook computer for the targeted market. But we don't normally use a super bright display because of the extra cost (the display + associate components to support the screen) and also power consumption. Though you can tune down the brightness to conserve the battery. If I were a designer for the low end / budget tablet, I would target the device for indoor use. Hence, it is unlikely it is suitable for outdoor use with direct bright sunlight. Most of the tablet manufacturers don't list the brightness in their tablets' spec. For those tablets that listed the brightness information, they will treat that as a competitive feature and it will usually cost a lot more.

    Can i use the default cable that comes with the mvic mini drone to fly it with this tablet or i have to buy a longer cable

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  2 года назад +1

      The default cable comes with the drone is too short for the tablet. You can see the black cable 3:33 into this video. I used the original cable just for shooting that video but it will not work well for actual flying the drone. Towards the end of this same video 4:11 I have also talked about using the extension cable from Amazon.

    Do i have to get a tablet holder for this tablet to connect to the controler

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  2 года назад

      Depends on your drone controller. Most likely you need to get the tablet holder. I modified one and sturdier than the one most people buy. You also need an extension cable (depending on the drone you have). I have a video here about the tablet holder I use: ruclips.net/video/g-TsmYatd-o/видео.html . It is easy to modify/build one.

    Did you ever experience any overheating issues? I have the same tablet and after watching your video, I was about to successfully download and open the DJI Fly app. However, I will have to purchase a longer cord to connect the controller to the tablet. Great video!

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching. I have used the tablet for flying drone may times and I have not experienced any overheating issue with the tablet. If you experienced that, there is possibly other background SW /apps running causing the overheat. Sometimes rebooting the system may fix that. Of course a failing battery or other components may exhibit heating issue also. I used to design computer's including tablet kind of system before I retired. I bought this extension USB cable from Amazon www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0989Z7VKN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have done more test with this set up and the video is here ruclips.net/video/sk_wBEVhOwM/видео.html Cheers!

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  2 года назад

      Yes. It is possible. 3:22 into this video, I used the cable comes with the Mavic mini and flew the drone indoor. I didn't have the tablet holder. If you have a longer cable, you can place the tablet further away. Say, I could sit indoor, and place this set up on a table and fly the drone at my yard.

    Good job
    I have a question is the Tablet really a "Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite 8.7" with 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM?
    I have one with these characteristics and I have a lot of artifacts in the image, what can I change or configure differently to reduce this?
    Thanks

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  Год назад

      Yes, the tablet I used (I am still using it today) is the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite 8.7" 3 GB RAM and 32 GB ROM, the low end version. The result of the real time captured video can be seen here (at the end of this video)
      ruclips.net/video/sk_wBEVhOwM/видео.html It is not perfect, but is smooth enough for me to fly the drone. When I created this video, I have the screen capture apps running at the background, this may have minor impact to the performance of the tablet. I have very few apps installed in this tablet therefore I don't expect many background running tasks impacting the performance of tablet. I notice if the drone is far away, or there are interference to the Wifi, the video may freeze for a brief period, a second or two, sometimes a bit more depending on the condition. Then I would initiate a 'return home' and very soon, the video streaming will become better. My suggestion for you to try is to remove other apps in your tablet. Update the DJI SW and the Drone FW (which they will tell you also), update the android on your tablet. Clear the cache memory on your tablet. Have fun flying your drone!

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  Год назад +1

      @@xhumeka Sorry to tell you it is not an easy question to answer. I will look for a tablet that is brighter. Also look for one that has newer CPU, with more memory. Apple usually has better quality products, but I don't like the IOS which has a lot of restrictions when compared with Android. For mobility, I don't want a large screen.

    Is the mavic mini worth buying in 2022

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  2 года назад +1

      I bought the 'fly me combo' at $275 from Newegg a few months ago. The price is right and I don't need the updated features. I am not into creating 4K videos. I just need it to to do simple drone videos and it serves me well. I have DJI Spark a few years ago and I used it a few times then and kept that in my closet. When I decided to used it this year and the batteries all failed. The battery replacement cost $125/battery. To me buying the Mavic mini is a better deal. If you are looking for the latest features, than don't buy Mavic Mini. This is my suggestion.

    I purchased one of these for the DJI Fly app. Everything works but it still sucks in (lack of) brightness. All I can see on a sunny day is my reflection on the screen. All cheap tablets have that same problem. If you really want a good one you'll have to fork over many hundreds of dollars for something like a Tripltek. They come in at about 1200 nits, the Samsung is around 315. That's is a big difference. Basically you get what you pay for!

    • @DIYUSA
      @DIYUSA  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for your input! I tried it out a few days ago and I was glad it was a cloudy day and I didn't have problem with it, though I prefer it to be brighter even on a cloudy day. I will have to get a sun hood to work around the brightness issue. Not an ideal case but I can't afford the more expensive tablet at this moment. Cheers!
