I ran into this exact situation getting a laptop for my mom. "Can't you get something for like $100?" I got her a $600 one and lied about the price. Love you mom.
I do that to my parents and phones. They don't need much just RUclips and email but I can't let them use garbage. My dad has a OnePlus 7 and my mom has a Samsung a71. They think they were cheap 100 dollar phones.
Agreed, in the past when trying to make recommendations for cheap tablets, laptops, etc., I've always found that there's a ton of reviews and it's easy to find information on high-end products, but it's been difficult to find information on the lower-end stuff. Especially for people who don't care that much, but just want something that works, lasts a while, and is a relatively good experience.
@@jhoff80 in many ways, the Chrome OS community fulfills that, because most people getting a Chromebook are just getting it because they need a basic Internet, social media machine, so the reviews often focus on those use cases.
As someone who has to keep the families tech up to date on a budget, I would love to see a regularly updated video series for tech like smartphones, tablets and notebooks. I’m more familiar with the top of the notch products than the lower priced ones.
my go to strategy for good budget phones as a big brother of 8 siblings, I can safely say, as long is it has a snapdragon chip not older than 2 years and a 4200mah battery, its a good phone. For laptops, as long as it has a cpu not older than 2 years and ABSOLUTELY has an IPS screen, you're good to go. If you ever see an MX graphics card for +100 bucks, dont do it. It will probably have worse graphics than the integrated graphics on the cpu. If you need a gpu for a bit heavier tasks, only look for GTX graphics on laptops. 1050 being the minimum. (Bonus note for phones, if you plan on keeping the phone for more than 2 years, avoid AMOLED/OLED screens... they ALWAYS burn in at 1-2 years and white becomes yellow be it a 200$ phone or a 800$ one.)
@B0ITech I remember my first ever laptop I had to get my friend’s dad to do a scuffed upgrade to it so it could run Minecraft at 30fps 💀 And it only worked on servers, single player worlds it would lag like crazy
I truly admire LMG, specifically the ability that Linus is able to create jobs, financial freedom and the ability to truly, truly enjoy his work while educating and entertaining his subscribers! Thank you!
Maybe it's just me, but I think I would love to see more videos of this type Specifically, when somebody needs information on something even if it's just you know a family member of someone that works there they do a video on it which granted is self serving as much as anything else but, when you think about it they're helping people and putting a video out that might help other people besides those in the video
@ my mum who owns an ipad pro instead of buying a laptop and having a home internet connection. More content featuring edge use cases like that would be cool
That's how pitch meetings work. They gotta pump out like 20 videos a week, and some videos are in the pipeline for weeks or months, or even years and it's anything and everything to make it to the daily update. RUclips algorithm is a fickle thing and losing position by missing a video can cost them 10s of thousands.
As a Highschooler, my iPad 6th gen is my go-to. I use it as a phone, computer, and tablet, all in one. I use it heavily everyday, for entertainment, my assignments, talking to friends, and gaming, even. And after using it for 3 years, it’s still holding up pretty well. Literally watching this video on it rn. 10/10
Love this kind of video. Parents and older family members always ask for my advice but at a budget which I’m not always familiar with all the options. I like that you incorporated the tech capabilities of most into this. I wouldn’t be able to download google play store on that tablet so I doubt my parents would be able to either.
Same with some of my family members - they don't want to spend more than 200€ on a phone. But I know their income, and I know they can damn well afford to spend 300, so I just tell them that 200 makes no sense since they'll have to get a new one sooner, effectively spending the same.
I love budget videos like this, taking an entire market and finding the best bang for your buck out of the bunch. Only issue I have is that this video will most likely be well out of date in a couple years, so just having a yearly budget series, for phones, laptops, etc. would be great so that the budget market is always transparent and people looking for new devices always either have somewhere to get good info, or something to look forward to.
The tablet space is pretty stagnant and non competitive. Just change the year model and it will probably still hold true. a refurbed 2022 iPad will probably be the best pick in $250 (or maybe a bit more for inflation) in 2026, Samsung will probably still have the best tablet option in the android side in 2026, fire tablet ‘26 being the “I just need something to watch videos and search the web with” device. ONN being the cheapest of all options and probably the one you should just pass on. And then insert X variable unknown brand tablet that sits in the mediocre middle, not too good or too bad for the money. If this video was made 4 years ago, you’d roughly pick from the same choices. The tablet space is truly unremarkable and non-innovative even in the higher end. iPads and Samsung are the only ones duking it out and iPad really doesn’t have to try that hard to beat Samsung.
Gosh darned, Anthony is truly a gift. Thank you Anthony's mom and dad. And thank you Linus for actually making it worth their while being in the video instead of just smooching off of the good will of employees relatives unlike some other youtubers.
My grandma gave me the requirement of “Big display” and “not that thick”. Which just lead me to throwing her a 12.9 inch Pro. Overkill, but big and pretty thin. She was very satisfied. (And no I did not tell her the price) A lot of people don’t understand, idiot proofing is pretty important. And yes, the upfront cost is expensive but that iPad has lasted for 5 years now with not a single call from her for help in diagnostics/troubleshooting. That saves me a lot of headaches than if I got a cheap crappy noname just because “it’s cheap” 5 years back.

@@daliamosesp Hahaha! You might be right! We use a couple of iPad 2s (yeah) at the clinic for patient management and they’re starting to show their age so at least professionally I may be in the market sooner than I imagined.
As someone who works with a lot of elderly people, this was so helpful! But also the disconnect of what elderly people believe tech prices should be and what they realistically are is astounding.
The best tablet depends on what kind of phone your parents use. It was already a nightmare teaching my parents how to use their iphones. I can already imagine the nonstop IT call if I buy a parents an android tablet. I would happily shell out the money for a new ipad if it saves me from the hell of teaching my parents how to use a new piece of tech.
I’m not kidding, I read the title as “My dad needs to take tablets”, and wondered why Linus was doing a video on his father’s pharmaceutical requirements and medical needs
There’s that new tech out that dispenses the pills you need when you need them. I honestly wouldn’t be super surprised if they did an unboxing(or at least talked about it) here.
Carrie Fisher used to tell a great story about her dad, Eddie Fisher, getting new high-tech tiny hearing aids and then swallowing them with his regular meds the very next morning.
Tablets under 250 dollars have a lot of room for improvement. As recent budget phones have shown, good relatively good specs for that price is really possible. Fortunately, many companies are now focusing on the budget tablet segment and we can hope to see some very capable tablets for a low price.
I got an amazon fire hd10 plus for christmas and I just used a program on my pc to install a standard version of Android on it instead of FireOS. After doing that its a great little device and I use it way more than I thought I would. Though I mainly use it for reading and watching youtube on the side while gaming. Really hard to go back to my phone for things like that now
True. Phones like the POCOs of the world just show what is possible. Decent software, amazing hardware. Just make the screen bigger and boom, a cheap amazing tablet. Someone get POCO to make tablets already
I feel like that tablets is the one market Xiaomi has a power to disrupt too, especially in continents other than America like they did with their phones. That said, Xiaomi's software is not amazing by any means but you can just flash your own if you are tech savy and the hardware is affordable while being reasonably high quality. They also don't create their own "questionable" chips like Samsung.
As someone who lives and breathes in the Android ecosystem, I can't argue with Apple's foothold in the tablet market. My wife was looking to upgrade some throw-in Huawei tablet given to her from her service provider a few years ago, and I'd actually recommended the 9th Gen iPad with LTE. She just picked it up earlier this week and no complaints so far. Goes well with the iPhone 13 she also just upgraded to from her old Pixel 3 earlier this year.
Androids are dirt cheap , but don't age well after 4 years . the $80 moto g and onn pro octo core would be the bare minimum to buy. pixel A, ipad, iPhone SE have the best value for $300.
@@voteDC it can- technically... But it's gonna be painfully slow, some apps simply won't work on it (banking apps etc) and it just won't be as reliable. saying a galaxy s2 can *run* android 11 is a HUGE stretch, I loved getting android 12 on my s3 but it's not user friendly at all and far from usable as a daily driver, it was a fun project, but don't pitch it as a solution for lackluster software support. Androids don't age as well as iPhones, that's just how it is. That doesn't make Androids worse than iPhones, but they simply don't age as well, and this is very important to people that need to sell their devices before buying a new one. Thankfully this is soon to change since Android OEMS are taking software support seriously now!

I have to say, I’ve had the 6th Gen iPad for years now and I absolutely love it (though I also have more storage). Personally I find the 9.7” to be perfect. In some cases it seems small, in others it seems large, but in most cases it’s just right
its stuff like this that makes me happy my dad is more of a tech early adopter than i am. i will never have to worry about getting my parents a computer or tablet. it also helps that he works for AMD though haha
Yes!! When our folks ask for suggestions for tablets, my husband and I usually recommend a used Apple for longevity and ease of use for them. (And fewer “how do I do this” phone calls for us.) 😄❤️ Thanks LTT for this confirmation!❤️
My wife went through 4 different low end android tablets in 2 years before I bit the bullet and just got her the entry level iPad for ~$350. That was about 3.5 years ago. When I asked her recently if she needed a new iPad, she asked "why? it still works great!". If you're looking at a tablet, the iPad truly is the cheapest option as it will far outperform and outlast the multiple android tablets you'd go through in the same amount of time.
@@TimCortesi I am an Android guy but the Apple tablets are probably the best in the market. The Samsung S lineup is almost there and I will upgrade my s6 lite someday, but for people that don't love android, I would recommend an iPad
We replace our fire had tablets every 3ish years or so. We have an 8 year old iPad that is still VIBING. It is showing age… but I always recommend the iPad to people. They just do what they do, but better. Even when I was an Android user, we used iPads.
One thing to mention since this was made is that Samsung updated the S6 Lite to a new processor. Not a great improvement, but there is some improvement and with a refresh there is bound to be a increase in the length of time you can keep it as a useable tablet. Especially since the price remains the same.
I was just in this situation as my dads old Huawei tablet was really getting slow and completely filled up. I ended up going for a Lenovo tablet (Lenovo Tab M10 HD (2nd Gen) 64GB 4gG). I've been impressed so far, it does all the basic tablet things it needs to do and feels snappy to use. And the coverage is good for the 4G connection.
I ordered 40 of these tablets for one of our distribution lines. These were far and away the best value for money tablet with good specs and great build quality. And when I look today, they've even been reduced in price by about 20%!
The updates however are abysmal. Lenovo never runs latest Android versions and even managed to have a Android 8 device in my local hardware store while 12 was already out. Seriously, once it leaves the factory its over for updates.
Got one too. Great value, but it's pretty slow and laggy, not responsive at all. It's for my kid though, so we'll see how it survives and if an upgrade is warranted.
The M10 Pro (Gen 3) is shaping up to be a great tablet. (For around $200) Anyways I got a Xiaomi Pad 5 and I am very happy with it. Can't stand the Apple locked ecosystem.
The XDA Developers website has the software for Amazon Fire, called the "Fire Toolbox", that you can use to easily modify your tablet, i.e. Installing Google Play Services, unbloating, remove ads, custom launcher, etc, with a single click. It's definitely a lot easier to use than manually using adb commands especially for the non tech-savvy person. Been using the HD 8 for few months and Fire Toolbox is a literal gift from God.
I've been running with the S6 Lite for I think nearly 2 years and it holds up well. I use it for general web browsing, watching RUclips & Netflix, a D&D character sheet and as an E-Reader. I'm not into mobile gaming so I'm not pushing it to it's limit by any means but it's been totally solid for me.
I've got the S6 Lite as well but I feel like it chugs running OneUI, I currently have it on a custom rom and its not too bad. But then again I'm also used to 2019 flagship phone specs so, a low end samsung tablet from this time is gonna be slower anyway.
My great grandmother was born in the 40's, and she uses Amazon to this day. She just bought me an Amazon fire HD 10 tablet for a good price. It may not be as good as android, and doesn't have Google play or anything android does, but I downloaded most of my apps from APK sites online, and fire tablets are still pretty good tablets to me. I had one since I was young, and it feels kinda nostalgic. (I am 13 years old by the way.)
The S6 Lite is one of the closest things to a reasonable tablet where I live. Almost everything else is either way overpriced, or utter crap, often both (even it sits at 335€, which gives you an idea of the market). I was lucky that I pulled a trigger on a different model during a pre-order period, so I got a newer, faster tablet with a bigger and better screen (but no bundled pen) for slightly less and it turned out to not be a dud. As for the older generation, my wife's grandparents have a tablet that the telecom gave them for free and it's just as bad as you imagine. It's at least relatively large, so they can read the news on it and it sort of does the job for video calls, although, when we call them, it doesn't always ring as the poor 1GB Android thingy sometimes puts Viber and Skype to sleep. I was in a state of shock when that thing died and my brother in law bought them the same one, but his reasoning was that they are at least familiar with that one and I couldn't argue with that. They are both over eighty, never owned a computer (I'm not sure about smartphones), and, you explain something to them, they get it, do it right themselves, but they often forget in a few days and they actually live in another country so it's not easy to pop by when they need their memory refreshed or have a technical issue.
Amazon's Fire 7 was what pushed me to buy an iPad. So no matter how cheap it was, how much better it got, I was traumatized by its software. Like Twitter/Facebook app clashing the whole tablet etc.
I would avoid buying Amazon hardware. It's almost always worst on the market and it all only exists to try and trap you in their awful ecosystem. I had a Fire 10, amongst other things and it was probably the worst tablet I've used.
I would honestly love to see videos on tech specified for kids/ elderly. I just got the samsung watch 4 for my grandma because it has automatic fall detection and my grandma refuses to use the lifealert stuff. However, there's a LOT of bloatware that I want to hide that I can't. I wish I could hide nearly everything so I don't get called nearly every day from her clicking random things

I gave my mom my old iPad that I paid only $330 for, maybe even just 300 on sale. It was easily 3-4 years old, played netflix just fine, and the screen looks great and big compared to her very very old iPad mini. She used it for Lightroom as she got into photography. The intro iPad is very worth the value considering how long they support it and how good the hardware is. I think OG Linus was right 'just get them an iPad'. I actually hated the idea of an iPad back when they first launched and were near $1k, but at around $300 it was a fine jump between my phone and desktop (I dont use a laptop), and since then I've updated to the M1 iPad.
This is how I usually argue. Yes you can get a tablet that is fine now for cheap. However you will be frustrated pretty soon. Getting an entry-level iPad (and maybe spend a bit extra on storage if you can) will give you a device that lasts for a hecking long time in tech world. One might actually say, if you split up the price over its lifespan, an entrylevel iPad with 128GB storage is pretty cheap.
@@rGunti Meh, that was more of 2016 era that you'd get frustrated. Android has seriously improved, and it's past should be forgotten, although people have a hard time forgetting that. Maybe it's changed but last time i used one android app support was sketchy. Most apps worked, but stuff like netflix and banking apps didn't. Also apps scaled very badly to a tablet size screen. I've never owned a regular tablet so I don't know if that's down to androids poor tablet support or a chromebook issue, but it wasn't a great experience.

I bought my younger sibling an S6 Lite in 2020 and they love it. For those interested in digital art on the cheap its really good, better than spending a similar amount on a dedicated drawing tablet that requires a PC and can't be moved around.
That's what my elder brother did lmao. What a coincidence. He got me S6 Lite in 2020 and I'm a (hobbyist) digital artist, though we discussed what to get before that (either S6 Lite or older S5). But yeah, can vouch it's a great tablet, even outside drawing. Very happy with it. It's also a laptop replacement since my laptop died, though I have PC as my main driver.
I wish I waited for the S6 lite, I got myself an S5e in late 2019 for ~320usd, the OLED screen is nice but I'd trade it for S-pen support. In any case I'm happy with it and I'll be good with it for 6+ years

Having grandparents that are not very tech savvy, there's also something that is not told here about the Ipad and Apple as a whole, the software is *very intuitive*. While for the rest of us Apple´s efforts to not let us do what we want with our things might bother us, it's incredibly useful for older people. My grandparents have Iphones and an Ipad, and let me tell you, they definitely don't have as many doubts as they used to before.
I don’t trust anyone over the age of 65 with non-Apple products to be perfectly honest. The amount of bloatware and junk that I’ve had to clean off of my visually-impaired grandpa’s android devices is astounding. There’s a new “Cleaner” every time I use them. It’s not like he was even fooled by them in the first place, he just clicks on stuff by accident and can’t see well enough to get back to what he was doing, so over time his stuff gets bogged down. You’d never run into that issue on an iPad. You’ll click an in-app advertisement at worst.
@@bcj842 I used to buy into apple being "more intuitive", but when I got my late 70s dad a smartphone I bought him an Android, because he's cheap. I called him a few times a week and taught him to use it over the phone (we talked on the landline until he was comfortable with it). Every couple of years I got him a new android phone and things were great. He even started ordering things off ebay, and aliexpress on his android phone as he rolled into his 80s, and learned to use the paypal account I helped him set up. Then ~4 or 5 years later I bought him an Iphone, because I thought it would be a smoother experience and my mom, who already had an iphone, could help him if he had questions. He could *NOT* figure out how to use it at all. It was so, so, so bad. He rage-broke two iphones by throwing them. I just ordered him a new android for Black Friday and will help him set it up this week. [My first phone was the first iphone, and I loved it, but I switched to android because I love tinkering. There are things I like and dislike about both--but after my dad's experience I no longer even a little bit think apple is intuitive for the non-technical user. In fact, he had several problems with his last two iphones that made -*-me-*- want to throw them, and required either sending them back to apple, or agonizing loooong phone calls with support (before he gave up and busted them). And I worked in IT and tech support professionally--but the thing that got him wasn't build quality, it was the interface, which he could -*-not-*- seem to learn a tenth as easily as android. For reference, my dad had never touched a computer before I bought him his first smartphone, nor had he ever touched a tablet. The first phone I got him was a google pixel, fwiw, and he took to it like a duck to water. I don't think an iphone is more intuitive or easier-- they were just the first, so it was what most people first experienced, and Apple was quick to capitalize on that, and people were quick to fail to understand that whatever you learn first is what you'll likely prefer and find "better."
I got my 6th gen iPad in 2018 and it still runs great. I mean, I don't go hard with it, but I've written thousands of pages of handwritten notes on Notability and painted several artworks on Procreate. I've got 2 of them in my household for portable movies, twitch streaming, e-books, D&D and 40K assistant apps, and just simply browsing while away from my desktop 👍
I feel like good options from Lenovo or Nokia weren't explored that could be viable options in this price range. For me depeding on the usage I could bump it to 400 because if media is one of the main reasons for the tablet cheap ones tend to be not that good at it.
I got pulled into their flash advertisement of their, 'Smart Dock' on my Lenovo M8 Smart Tab. Only to find out there is nothing smart about the dock. Its just a proprietary charging interface which holds the tablet up at a comfortable angle. The, 'Smart' behind the M series was dual far range microphone to be able to use the M8 as a Google Assistant. There was nothing on their website to indicate the dock pins or what the dock actually did. Its not until I got it home did it dawn on me. Lenovo was being creative on marketing. Frankly the real reason why I bought the M8 was their Dolby Atmos chip. A previous Lenovo tablet of mine had the Dolby SS chip which means I use my tablet as my music driver for Bluetooth instead of my phone. That way I don't run down battery life of my phone which does have a sick 5000mAh battery (UmiDigi Bison 2021 model).
$400 USD is a WHOLE different price point than $250 when it comes to mobile tablets. You can get a flagship chip Snapdragon 870 on Xiaomi and Lenovo's tablets for $400.
My mom had a Samsung phone and the screen broke, the shop wanted to charge her 80 euro for new screen plus installation. I used to be a die hard android budget tablet fan. Nexus 7, Nvidia Shield etc. I just consistently had hardware issues. In 2018 I caved and bought the 6h gen iPad shown here. I still use it everyday for content consumption. It definitely feels slower compared to my phone. However it still works fantastic on the latest version of iPadOS. Definitely worth spending a few more dollars for what has objectively been a more enjoyable and consistent experience . @@theMoporter Yeah I was looking at the Mediapad m5 8.4" to replace my old Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" but then Huawei was pushed out of the country and thus I had to settle for a Samsung Tab S5E as a replacement for the aging Kindle. I’ve seen the Fire HD 10 at significant discounts (under $100). And if Anthony loaded the Google Play Store before giving it to his dad, it might be an excellent option.
I got one for myself and it's amazing once you install all the Google services. It's not the best obviously, but if you don't plan on doing any demanding tasks on it, it's hell of a deal. Got it for 80€ a few months ago
I never had to sideload Google services so this an honest question: How long does it last? Do you have to manually update it and can it break? I think many of us are all to familiar with trying to remotely diagnose a problem with our parents devices and it's not a pleasant experience :)
@@Jehty_ I did it not long ago. Takes just a few minutes and so far no problems. You do need to go to the Google app store to update apps. I got my daughter the S6 lite for Christmas this year because she loves to draw, and I've been pretty pleased with what you get versus what you pay. It's by no means a perfect device, but it's a compelling offering at a good value.
I'm pretty happy with Lenovo Yoga tablets - really good battery life and integrated stand while having enough performance for web browsing and content consumption.
Yeah, kinda sad that there was nothing about lenovo tablets. I bought 3 lenovo tablets: 1) Lenovo Tab M10 HD (for grandmother) 2) Lenovo Tab M10 FHD (for me) 3) Lenovo Tab P11 Plus (for dad) My usage showed me that those tablets have very solid and good user experience/price.
Got my grandparents each an iPad in 2014, upgraded them after 3/4 years each, they are just so much more durable and easy to use than an android, especially for an older person who has no idea how to use electronics.
That's so true. Even the old iPad mini 2 can still (only just) be good enough if you really are that kind of person to hesitate spending big on newer models. I honestly will recommend atleast the 6th Gen iPad though if someone asks me for the same budget constraints.
As a tinkerer who mostly uses tablets for things like DIY projects screens, reading, macro deck, etc. The 7" Onn from 2021 has really been good for me. Love messing with it, using it as a screen to display widgets and charts at my desk, and as an e-reader. Cheap stuff I don't have to worry about breaking are far more useful to me than expensive closed ecosystem stuff like an iPad. Also, just hate Apple.
A respectable alternative for Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is the Galaxy Tab A7 if someone does not want to pay $250 and still wants a Samsung tablet. The Tab A7 has pretty much identical specifications to the Tab S6 Lite other than the S-Pen missing.
@@typhoon_8086 Snapdragon and Exynos processors weren't catching up to Apple's yet in performance, and I think they chose the specific processor for the cheap price, even now Apple is still dominating, I think Mediatek makes great cheap processors though that Samsung could use.

the community around the fire tablets is so great there's literally an all in one tool (fire toolbox) you can use to side load google play and services on any fire tablet among being able to remove some of the less than stellar things on them.
Yeah. The kindle fire is best value. I have been using them since the original one came out 10 years ago. Modifying them has got a lot easier since then.
I have a cheap 2017 Fire 7. I also have a LineageOS custom ROM on it, none of that Amazon nonsense. However it was so locked down that I had to open it up, cut an EMI shield open, and then short two microscopic PCB traces so that the CPU fails to boot normally and a hack could get at it. (No I didn't figure it out myself, I simply followed instructions on XDA)

X'D That ending where you just GAVE Anthony's grandpa the tablet was SO sweet! My feels! You're such a good, cool guy, Linus!
I'm still using my iPad Air from like 2014, which I received as a gift even though I never thought about buying a tablet. Granted, I'm not gaming on it, but unless you're playing massive 3D games it can handle pretty much anything. I'm using it mostly for light movies (although a lot of x265 encoded movies seem to lag, depending on how heavily compressed they are), and reading and sometimes note taking, and occasionally doodling on the notes app when I'm bored. I doubt his father is much of a gamer, so even something this old second-hand probably still works well for his purposes, and would be much better than buying a more expensive but crappier non-apple tablet. My dad grew up in much tougher times than I did, so saving every little buck meant everything to him for survival, that's why he would go for a $100 one instead of $300, it's second nature to him, no matter how many times I try to explain to him that the $100 is going to be more costly to him in a few years (or months 🤷♀), when it stops working or experiences issues much quicker than the higher priced ones. I inherited my dad's frugal nature but I'm using it in a smarter way since I grew up around tech and I know how much 'e-waste' there is in the market. I spend a lot on something because I expect to keep it for longer. I only replace my gaming mice every 5-7 years, and when people around me tell me why do you have a gaming mouse when you rarely game anymore? The answer is product life is much higher. I can spend $10 every few months on a new mouse and I'd lose a lot more money for a lot less value and a worse experience, and for what? I'm still on my second gaming mouse, bought in 2017. Aside from needing cleaning once, never had any issues with it. I bought a $1500 laptop instead of a $1000 one for the same reason. My oler $400 laptop which I bought quickly out of necessity back in college was hell to deal with and I'm glad to be rid of it forever. My phones also last me 4-5 years, with my recent one just a few months old. I cheaped out on an SSD once and it died after 2 years, bought a slightly more expensive one and it's still amazing and fast (relatively) after 7 years. This got way longer than I intended, anyway... TLDR: Never cheap out on tech guys, you save a lot of value on the long run.
Massive 3D games? Mobile games still look like they're made for PS3, Xbox 360, and WiiU. Only a few exceptions like Genshin Impact look anything remotely like a PS4, Xbox One, or Switch game. I highly doubt there's any mobile game right now that resembles something for Steam Deck, PS4 Pro, and Xbox One X
@@youtubeshadowbannedme I only mentioned that to be safe honestly. I never played many games on it, nor do I know other 3D mobile games than Genshin, but seeing as it struggled with certain kinds of videos it was fair to assume it would struggle with certain 3D games as well. It is after all 8 years old.
@@KabooM1067 huh? They are long lasting I guess, though I've only ever owned a standard iPad (6th gen). Still going strong though I've noticed some wifi issues. I was asking about an ssd you said you used which lasted 7 years, because I'm looking to buy an ssd but i only find negative reviews 😅
Had to do a deep dive on this a few months ago for my mom´s birthday. She just loves her tablets and the latest one she bought was the crappiest chinese thing out there. I ended up getting her the S6 Lite, with a Lenovo being a close second in the decision. It's a market that exists and more companies need to step up to offer at least one quality option.
Calling Walmart's Onn an "ewaste" is pretty accurate since I had to buy another Onn tablet for my 4 year old after I accidentally step on her previous one 😅 I was able to buy another one brand new for 42 dollars and she can continue playing Tom & Friends 2 and ABC Mouse like nothing happened to it 😂
Getting a 'BUDGET' device has become so much harder because of the clutter around it. Like you've zillions of options in the budget and mid-tier segment now. But which one is giving you a good value for money is really hard to differentiate. Thanks to the tech RUclipsrs like Linus we've a better clarity to what to go with.
The old guys scenes were funnier than hell, you guys are amazing, and as an old guy myself I love the subject matter. Thanks to Manscaped for helping Anthony's dad out. And another thing...Anthony either needs a salary increase or stop being, uhhh, frugal, and just buy his old man a top shelf tablet and be done with it for like 5ish years :)
I picked up at 10" Samsung S8 Light last month for just under $300 Canadian and I love it. Since my usage for tablets is pretty basic, it does most of what I want it to do without hanging up or chugging.
I wish the Nokia T20 had made the list! Looks promising for the price, but I don't know how it holds up compared to the other tablets, which would have been interesting
I'm noticing a lot of comments talking about the Galaxy Tab A7, and I think it's important to address that the value just is NOT there. Comparing The A7 ($200-250) to the 9th gen iPad ($330). The iPad gives you 2.2x CPU performance, and nearly SEVEN TIMES Graphics performance (120% CPU, 600% GPU) for only 50% more cost. the iPad also has 3GB of RAM vs 2GB, 6watt TDP vs 9watt (power efficiency), a MUCH better camera, and 5 years of software support (vs just ONE year for the A7, since it already is a year old). it is such an absolute no-brainer to go with an iPad if you are in the "budget tablet" market. It is the best "value" that you can possibly get in this market. It might not be the "cheapest" but it will certainly carry your money the furthest. Just save an extra $100 over the course of a month or two, and then buy yourself a MUCH better device, that will last 3 or 4 years longer than the next closest android competitor. Not to mention that app developers are more inclined to support old iOS devices because of the 60% market share! So even after your 5+ years of Apple's software support are up, you'll probably still be using Netflix, Spotify, RUclips, Candy Crush, Etc for another 2-3 years before you need to even consider a new device. $330 for 8 years of solid CPU *and* GPU performance??? No-brainer!!!
Most tablets are used for youtube and Netflix, I have an old ipad 4 and ipad mini that no longer run those apps. Basically only the browser works but barely. Overtime Apple will keep doing this forcing you to upgrade and you or some unlucky person will end up with a paperweight. Same thing happened with my ipod touch , the RUclips app just stopped working. Any old Android device will run software versions for that device, though no security updates if your not clicking on random links and sticking to apps you will be fine.
@@triggahappyyt5420 Remember, the 4th gen iPad is near 10 years old now. The reason you can't use the apps is because the services that allowed them shut down access from older apps to the server. Do you have a 10 year old android that still accesses every service without issue? Those services losing support for the older apps isn't Apples fault, it's the fault of the app makers dissallowing the old versions from access. It's the reason I've stayed far away from Roku or smart TVs in general, and will just rely on a 10 year old computer connected to my tv. I went with the newest gen iPad mini because I know parts will long remain available for a flagship device when the battery needs to be replaced down the line, and the particular apps I use will continue to work regardless of if services shut down. Also there is no real competing android device in the size category.
@@bitonic589 LMAO. bro the Tab S8 costs more than double the price of an iPad and *still* loses to it in single-core applications (Source: Geekbench), not to mention the Snapdragon 8 gen1 falls behind the A15 bionic in nearly every single benchmark, game, and power effeciency test (making the s22, quite literally and objectively, worse than the baseline iPhone 13). Definitely a great idea and executed well. I think the S6 Lite or A8, or a tweaked Fire HD10 are great options. But my god the jump up to the Xiaomi Pad 5 or base iPad is huge. Going from Tiger T610 and T618 to either an A12 or a Snapdragon 860 is mind blowing in terms of snappiness and capabilities. I’d go Xiaomi for the nicer design compared to the dated iPad look, but either is great. Though I got my dad an HD10 and added Google services for him at Christmas as it was only £80!
@@jevieyt it seems a brilliant option. Good power and a great design. I'd probably choose it over the base iPad for the nicer design and USB-C over lightning. Between that and great phones like the Poco or the Mi 11 Lite recently Xiaomi has been kicking arse in the budget/midrange space!
Yup. Xiaomi pad 5 is a pretty safe choice. Superior screen to dated base ipad and pretty decent speakers to go with it. The only area where base ipad pulls slightly ahead is raw performance, but that little bit of extra performance doesn't really make a meaningful difference when tablets are for some casual browsing and media consumption, and definitely not at the cost of a worse screen. Base ipad has been a good midrange entry tablet for a long time, but now that there is competition again, it's no longer the best and only option. My only annoyance with pad 5 is the unnecessarily heavy duty first party flip case - it sure keeps the tablet scuff free, but it alone adds more than half the tablet's own weight.
On point. You can also add in the updated security and anti-tracking features in the newer apple. Which is something I would have never thought would be a thing, but it is and its cool.
I love these budget videos, its both helpful for when i need to recommend stuff to people, and it super interesting to see what you can get in the budget market. I'm never surprised to see what a $1200 tablet can do, it SHOULD be incredible. i AM however curious how much of that 1200 can be achieved for 1/6th the cost.
As an old guy, I think you guys kinda missed the mark on this one. All you did is your usual song and dance about specs, quality and apps installed. Granted, this is important stuff, but what Dad needs is ease of use, simplicity and durability. You touched on durability but sorta passed over simplicity and ease of use. I own an iPad (in a PC world), because of the simplicity/ease of use...and yeah, I own an iPhone too. Also, I do think that it matters what your mobile foundation is too, because Android or Apple will integrate phone and pad functions better, and that is certainly worth mentioning.
I'm glad they started testing Genshin Impact in their comparisons/reviews, it helps me gauge how good it is way more easily because I play that exact game (not ones they used before for the most part)
To be fair it's probably one of the most demanding games out there for mobile platforms - it makes sense to benchmark it on mobile also considering it's a popular game
Just finished my deep dive into the tablet world and concluded that the Xiaomi pad 5 is the best bang for buck, should be here in a few days. Not sure it's available in the U.S directly bit can always import it. UPDATE it's incredible, and not just for the price. Best bit of tech I've bought.
Currently writing this on one and it's amazing in every way, don't forget to use memory extension setting and turn off the animation scale settings to keep it smooth and increase longevity although this goes for any Android 11 tablet that can also do this 😁

my go to strategy for good budget phones as a big brother of 8 siblings, I can safely say, as long is it has a snapdragon chip not older than 2 years and a 4200mah battery, its a good phone. Linus needs to see this.
The tablet space is truly unremarkable and non-innovative even in the higher end. iPads and Samsung are the only ones duking it out and iPad really doesn’t have to try that hard to beat Samsung.

dude, phones can be good for under 250, but tablet you gotta add 100 or 150 to that. just the device being hella bigger already increased the cost
I got an amazon fire hd10 plus for christmas and I just used a program on my pc to install a standard version of Android on it instead of FireOS. After doing that its a great little device and I use it way more than I thought I would. Though I mainly use it for reading and watching youtube on the side while gaming. Really hard to go back to my phone for things like that now
That's why you go slightly used. I picked up a Galaxy Tab s6 for $250
If you want a tablet, go for apple or samsung.

The Samsung S lineup is almost there and I will upgrade my s6 lite someday, but for people that don't love android, I would recommend an iPad
my suggestion is always to just stick with whatever OS their phone uses to reduce those "how do I use this calls"
We replace our fire had tablets every 3ish years or so. We have an 8 year old iPad that is still VIBING. It is showing age… but I always recommend the iPad to people. They just do what they do, but better. Even when I was an Android user, we used iPads.
My mother in law still uses a 2012 iPad 3. It shows its age, but still runs facebook, instagram web and youtube.
I have that same Lenovo model, but for my child's online classes. Ended up with me, though, as he preferred a laptop with its physical keyboard.
Been using the HD 8 for few months and Fire Toolbox is a literal gift from God.
that's too much work, I prefer to put more money and buy something that just works.
The HD 8 is such a bargain when it's on offer, I'm always tempted to buy one, but I already have 3 tablets, 2 laptops and a gaming PC lol

The S line of Tabs are truly amazing! The S8 lineup looks so good.
I've got the S6 Lite as well but I feel like it chugs running OneUI, I currently have it on a custom rom and its not too bad. But then again I'm also used to 2019 flagship phone specs so, a low end samsung tablet from this time is gonna be slower anyway.
The more amazing part is that DeX feature was being added to it.

Plus, I mean, like you said, they're 80. Don't need to really worry about if the tablet has 6 more years of support or not.

Having grandparents that are not very tech savvy, there's also something that is not told here about the Ipad and Apple as a whole, the software is *very intuitive*.
Yeah, walled gardens are great so that the old folks to wander off and get lost, but personally, I'll brave the wilds, so that I can see the horizon.
@@bcj842 I used to buy into apple being "more intuitive", but when I got my late 70s dad a smartphone I bought him an Android, because he's cheap.

There was nothing on their website to indicate the dock pins or what the dock actually did.
Its not until I got it home did it dawn on me. Lenovo was being creative on marketing. Frankly the real reason why I bought the M8 was their Dolby Atmos chip. @@theMoporter Yeah I was looking at the Mediapad m5 8.4" to replace my old Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" but then Huawei was pushed out of the country and thus I had to settle for a Samsung Tab S5E as a replacement for the aging Kindle. Dad be like "What channel is the Netflix??"
I never had to sideload Google services so this an honest question:
How long does it last? Do you have to manually update it and can it break?
I think many of us are all to familiar with trying to remotely diagnose a problem with our parents devices and it's not a pleasant experience :)

a7 lite for kids, like $100 bucks and blows most of the other tablets out of the water. s6 lite is good too, better for artists.
I bought 3 lenovo tablets:
1) Lenovo Tab M10 HD (for grandmother)
2) Lenovo Tab M10 FHD (for me)
3) Lenovo Tab P11 Plus (for dad)
My usage showed me that those tablets have very solid and good user experience/price.
Still rocking a yoga tab 3 here to watch videos and nothing else
It has amazing sound and battery
I've got Tab P11 and you can't go wrong with this baby.
Got my grandparents each an iPad in 2014, upgraded them after 3/4 years each, they are just so much more durable and easy to use than an android, especially for an older person who has no idea how to use electronics.
Seen how laggy cheap android tablets usually are, even an old school iPad feels smooth and has a better screen in comparison in my experience
I have a s6 lite and it's perfect. The s pen works great for note taking, the screen is nice and does everything a tablet needs to do.
I still can't believe that Samsung is selling cheap hardware for around the same price as an IPad 9th Gen.
@@typhoon_8086 Snapdragon and Exynos processors weren't catching up to Apple's yet in performance, and I think they chose the specific processor for the cheap price, even now Apple is still dominating, I think Mediatek makes great cheap processors though that Samsung could use.
@@loop5720 The A7 Lite uses Mediatek and comes in under $200 (got mine for 120). It's no show stopper and a little sluggish, but great for media consumption.
@@loop5720 true, but Samsung could of at least put a Mediatek G90 or G91. Or better yet, a SnapDragon 695 in the Tab A8
@@typhoon_8086 I agree. The Tab A7 has Snapdragon 662, which I consider to be better than the UniSoc in Tab A8 in terms of processing speed and efficiency.
the community around the fire tablets is so great there's literally an all in one tool (fire toolbox) you can use to side load google play and services on any fire tablet among being able to remove some of the less than stellar things on them.
My mom cant even refresh website when a video player stop playing. Wrong demographic...
"Moses had better tablets" - HAHAHHA! Was NOT expecting that, and I'm sick with a fever rn, so that cheered me up like crazy! I needed that! Thank you very much! Missed you guys!

Had to do a deep dive on this a few months ago for my mom´s birthday. She just loves her tablets and the latest one she bought was the crappiest chinese thing out there. I ended up getting her the S6 Lite, with a Lenovo being a close second in the decision. It's a market that exists and more companies need to step up to offer at least one quality option.
the colour and the ambient from the couch in this video is so good, probably the best i have seen. The beanie colour is spot on as well.
Have to say, I think Jeff got the short end of the stick with that deal. Good episode, great content as per usual. Thanks LTT, LMG!
The way Linus told him they'll just send him the tablet was so nice 😭
9:18 missed opportunity. You should have said that directly to him and not us
Calling Walmart's Onn an "ewaste" is pretty accurate since I had to buy another Onn tablet for my 4 year old after I accidentally step on her previous one 😅
I was able to buy another one brand new for 42 dollars and she can continue playing Tom & Friends 2 and ABC Mouse like nothing happened to it 😂
7:30 Linus (correctly) notes that the iPad doesn't have expandable storage, yet at 6:37 the iPad's storage was listed as '32GB (expandable)'
I picked up at 10" Samsung S8 Light last month for just under $300 Canadian and I love it. Since my usage for tablets is pretty basic, it does most of what I want it to do without hanging up or chugging.

Got my Mi Pad 5 for 320$ and what can I say... A great tablet for games and media consumption.
"Tweaked" as in unlocked and rooted with a clean android, hell yeah. Fuck amazon's scumbagOS.
You gave us Anthony that is the least we can do for you 😂😂😂 that was so heart welming
