      I’m glad you liked it. I used to be quality control engineer at an engineering manufacturing facility when I was finishing up engineering school. The best wisdom that any of the senior engineers imparted on me was when a fella said. “These are engines, not Swiss watches.” Nothing wrong with spending tons of time and cash to make sure one is built perfectly, but it’s not always time and money well spent. You can cut some corners and do sloppy work on your own junk, and still get a lot of power and life out of an engine. A lot of people refuse to accept that reality. I used to be one of those people 😂

    "Two months and a thousand dollars later"
    Yeah I know that feeling.
    I had a single rusty bore on a 6.9 IDI I've been building. Got a quote from the only reputable-ish shop within a few hundred miles for a single sleeve, $1,200. I asked about full sending it with all eight sleeves. $1,800.
    I said screw it, dingleball honed the bores and sent it. With the shortblock fully assembled I decided to inspect the heads for the first time. Not good. Exhaust valves were all trash. Before buying valves and hand-lapping them in, I called another place that only does head work, about a valve job. Guy knew his stuff about IDIs, said the exhaust valves would all be scrap before I had a chance to say so. We talked for a bit, then I asked about cost and lead time. "Oh.... at least $1,000. And we couldn't get started any sooner than three and a half weeks."
    So I have some Stellite valves on order, and I'm hand lapping them. Happy day.
    Gonna boost 'er to the moon and see where the limit is, then back off a few pounds and do it again.

    • @freedomworx
      @freedomworx  5 месяцев назад

      If you don’t tell them exactly what you want done, they’ll generally do everything. Because that makes them the most money. I told them I only wanted the crank ground and the big end of the rods resized. If I hadn’t specified, they probably would have put new bushings in the small end also, and that would have cost me a couple hundred extra bucks. If you take the them a block and don’t specify, they bore it, honestly it, deck it, align hone the main caps, etc… And you might not of needed all of that.

    No way you're Burnt Chrysler because I've met him and he is wayyyyy fatter!
    I love the piston ring gap dilemma. Some people have to have them in just the right location or the engine will for sure blow up. I'm more of a just don't line them up and stab the piston in type. Many experienced guys have argued about ring spin but every engine I've popped pistons out of the ring gaps are in random locations so they 100% move.
    Also the bearing quote "they're darker so they'll run faster" got me!!!

    • @freedomworx
      @freedomworx  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, they move a lot more than people thing. There isn't a good way to predict what they will do, and it's based on many factors. But a study I read, that used radioactive tracers on rings to measure their rotation while the engine was in service, is that 3 revolutions around the piston per minute, is a good average. Of course, the darker the ring, the faster they rotate...

    • @freedomworx
      @freedomworx  4 месяца назад

      Doesn’t really matter where the trouble lies. Multiple rods or crank journals are not happy. So I figured I’d give them all the treatment. It’ll take 2 months whether they size 2 rods or 6 rods 😉

  • @glenncivale6824
    @glenncivale6824 28 дней назад

    Now this is just me- I would have knocked out the 3 tight ones and take some strips of 220 carburundum or (wet/dry) grit paper and sand down the 3 journals then finish them with strips of 600. That would take off 1-2 k. But, that is just me.

    • @freedomworx
      @freedomworx  28 дней назад

      That wouldn’t have helped the one rod that had 0.006” or more of clearance. The rods needed to be resized. The crank could have been run. But if the rods are going to the machine shop, the crank might as well go too. But that’s just me 😉

  • @Akya2120
    @Akya2120 4 месяца назад

    Disclaimer... I have only talked to professional engine builders about this. Plastigauge is not ideal, but if you're going to use it, use a new set of bearings afterwards. Once the bearing is crushed in, taking it off and reinstalling it increases the risk of spinning a bearing.

    • @freedomworx
      @freedomworx  4 месяца назад +3

      Using a new bearing after using plastigage totally defeats the purpose of using plastigage, or measuring the oil clearance by any means for that matter. The purpose of measuring the oil clearance is to account for manufacturing tolerances in the bearings. And plenty of professional device builders will reuse a bearing. There is no reason to replace a perfectly good bearing. The crush doesn’t change after subsequent installations. And any “engine builder” telling you that, shouldn’t be your engine builder.
