I love this channel. My girlfriend will never understand why I get pleasure from watching another man brush off a famous jazz guitarists pedalboard, but that's okay.
Dayum! 50 minutes. On your knees. Incredibly low light. Soldering? Stripping short wires? That whole situation is more terrifying and claustrophobic to watch than a spelunker's GoGpro. Super nice job!
Jim Hegarty It’s been pretty reliable since we made it back in 2012, obviously a few changes to keep it running had occurred since the last time I had seen it, but overall, from what John had reported, it’s been pretty rock solid. Thanks for watching! And, be sure to subscribe so you can continue to get good stuff like this!

Ruben Joshua hahaha! To be fair, he gave me a quick outline in advance so I knew what I would be getting into, but yes the timeline was a little tight, but we ended up finishing in about 45 minutes.
Great episode Mason. JS put on one of the best shows Ive ever seen at a tiny jazz club in Rochester, NY. I was front and center as he was playing with a trio of young cats from Berklee in his band. The tone brush rocks.
Can of compressed air per Silas. Good call. I've even gone as far as resoldering everything that can be soldered from the guitar to the amp input. That makes a huge difference if you care to put in the time.
Randy Fricke It can be good, but not a cure-all, if I had to choose between one another I would choose the tone brush before compressed air if the goal is cleaning pedal exteriors and the pedalboard platform.
Wow, so you always recommend taping up the pedal battery connector when connected to a power supply? I wonder if this what happen to an MXR phase pedal that I had , that stop working. Great video!
It’s a good practice if the pedal is regularly powered by power supply. Again some pedals are already protected from this with containers for the battery to live in isolation from the PCB, but even if you did tape a pedal with this feature you don’t risk anything.
Learning a lot from you regarding pedalboard maintenance. I have a big board with One Control OC10... have started to think the tone isn't as fantastic... I bet Deoxit D5 in all the inputs etc would do the job.
Thanks so much for watching David! We really appreciate the support!

Very cool episode!! Thanks for showing us which Deoxit to buy! I always seem to have something going on with my pedalboard. This will help abundantly! Cheers!
Hey Dr. Mason!!! This was an awesome video, and I will definitely put these tips into practice!!! I have a question hopefully you can guide me on: I bought a used Fender Hot Rod Deville (an older version), and it seems the tubes have started to rattle but only on certain frequencies, namely Ab ->B, and the low E. Does this sound like anything you’ve experienced before? Thanks and keep up these awesome videos 👍👍👍
My dream is to send you my board... Got an ES-5, couple Strymons, drives, powered by a VL Digital and VL 2 plus and still have noise when engaging my timeline. I tried everything to fix the problem but I just can't figure it out...
@@VertexEffectsInc I hear a very fast clicking sound that I don't hear when I have it through my ES-5. But the HUM I used to hear before is gone. I don't understand!! Help me! 😂
Love your videos! Quick question...regarding all the new custom solder-less cable kits...Roland has one and I believe D'Addario has one, Mogami does, found a generic one on Amazon for $39...any preference?
Chris Dunnett friends don’t let friends go solderless. For patch cables I recommend Mogami 2319 cable soldered to GLS plugs. I’ve got links in my description for the exact stuff both pre made and diy
Taping the battery clips? It's recommended if you use a 9v power supply instead of batteries to wrap the clip in electrical tape so it is isolated so the contacts for the battery clip cannot touch anything inside the pedal and cause a short. Which would cut signal from the pedal.
Could be a sensitivity to something on the pedalbord, not necessarily the pedal itself. Try it with a battery and just the guitar plugged into the pedal and pedal plugged into the amp - nothing else. See what happens
Just read about some having problems with popping noise when turning pedals on and off. Im having that issue with a Looper pedal. Is it a build up if voltage? What can help fix that?
@@VertexEffectsInc one is a button contact that just turns loops on and off. It's powered for the leds. The other board is a boss es8. Not as bad on the boss but still a little pop. With that said it is a high gain rig ran at really high volumes.
@@nickm.9474 Almost impossible to avoid with high gain and volume. You could try experimenting with the buffers in the ES-8. As for the simpler true bypass loop, you could add a 1M pull down resistor from the input to ground, and make sure the input is grounded in bypass.
Matt Mueller I mentioned it briefly in the video, but in some cases people experience a short, if the battery terminals make contact with the PC board. On some devices, the battery clip is contained, so there’s no risk, but on others where the battery clip is free floating, it’s a super easy way to eliminate the risk of a short.
Thank you so much for replying! I tried isolating it, just guitar and amp and I am running into the same problem. The hiss happens when I sweep the pedal from the off position. Hi Jake! It reads like you’re referencing what happened with the Axis Wah in 2014. I’m not sure if you’re using this as an avenue to dialogue or you just want to speak out on the subject. I’ve been pretty candid about my responsibility and what transpired with the Axis Wah. You may or may not know, but I did what I said I would - restoring the damaging I’d done with every customer by making direct restitution and amends with every customer that ever purchased the product by providing refunds, exchanges, and/or rebates based on what each customer requested to make them whole again. I still keep a section of my website dedicated to providing the same restitution options to those that were not previously aware of what had transpired with the Axis Wah. I can’t change what happened, however, I did everything in my power restore things with customers to the best that they could be on the customer’s terms. It took about a year to get everyone taken care of, but following that, I chose to move forward continuing to make high-quality products that are sold and marketed with integrity and let the market decide if there is a place for us. Since 2014, we’ve been fortune that we continue to grow and sell more pedals every year. I attribute this to, as bad as the circumstances were regarding the Axis Wah, that we did exactly what we told customers we would do - and most of these customers continued to buy pedals from us as a result after the fact. In any case, you may know all this stuff already, perhaps what I did is insurmountable for you - I accept that. Nevertheless, my hope is that this offers some context and background for your words.
