Its never worked for me however i believe it was a video by you might have been someone else but if the drift is really bad can take the controller apart (being as gentle as possible) and can pull on the side of the stick module and clean the area with qtip and some rubbing alcohol i had 3 controllers with stick drift so bad you couldnt even use them just to navigate the menu one controller was brand new only used maybe 2 weeks before the problem started and it worked amazing i now have 5 fully functioning controllers again. Thanks for all your videos they are absolutely helpful in everyway keep it up man
You need to open it and clean the components attached to the side of the analog stick in 2 compartments that snap open easily with rubbing alchohal. If you have never opened a controller i recommend spawn waves RUclips channel as he has detailed tutorials on how to open controllers and consoles. I followed his tutorials for ps4 controllers and also the ones on how to replace joy con sticks because mine was cracked and also how to replace the locking mechanism of the joy con with metal ones. He has many very good tutorial videos as he worked at GameStop for 10 years in the repair department. He is basically the Linus tech tips of consoles.
Personally when i press the L2 my right analog goes forward in the games. I fixed this temporarily by blowing the hole in between L1 and L2, but how can I fix this permanently?
had one for about 7 years been perfect and from a different ps4, and as I bought a new one it came with another one and has been perfect for the 3 years ive had it
I actually CAUSED drift on a perfectly good controller by trying to over clean analogue sticks.. you've got to be really careful! It seems like if anything sneaks down those holes it can cause drift or random movements while in game it's very sensitive. The problem is I hate the crunchy stick rotation feeling I like it feeling smooth so I tended to over clean but I just have to leave it alone
I don’t think over cleaning it was the problem. Maybe if you used isopropyl alcohol and didn’t let it completely dry before turning on the controller killed it. Because that happened to me :)
Never cleaned mine, using my ps4 controller since launch, the rubber on the analogue is mostly faded/gone, other than that the controller is 100% with zero drift
Cleaning the sticks is perfectly fine. What he completely ignored in this video is, it's super easy to open up the dualshock controllers, simply pull the sticks off and clean them away from the components, then air blast the components with the covers off so you get a much more thorough clean.
If you're gonna bother opening it better off replacing the sensor too, I opened mine countless times to put some lube on and after a couple months it would drift again until I replaced the little sensors.
I've used dielectric grease for really old really worn out controllers. Once nothing else does it... it at least adds a little more life, but you really need to keep them stored properly because debris sticks even worse after that point.
@@dingytheman1832 did you have to clean them up ever again after replacing them? asking because I have to open them once a couple months because of drift.

This has never worked for me. I have to take it apart gently pry open the plastic retainer for the analog potentiometers and clean them carefully with alcohol. I've noticed sometimes variations in quality of how the contact material is exposed for the analog mechanism circuits. I've had to carefully sometimes strip out extra insulation that was blocking the conductor runs for a better contact. Seen this problem even with very new controllers. It's annoying.
This is the best solution. Been doing this for many controllers even xbox. The guy in the vid is barely doing anything it won't even reach the joystick assembly
You have to disassemble the controller and then clean the sensors themselves. I fixed 4 controllers yesterday and they are all back to functioning like new. Blowing air down the analog stick will not fix the problem. Fixing analog drift is not a simple fix and requires actual work, but its worth it.
I’ve just followed this guide for my PS5 left stick drift and it’s really helped. It’s not completely fixed but the controller is at least usable now and only drifts occasionally. Thank you so much!
Because it doesn't help. Take apart the controller to get to the sensors between the plastics clamp shut. Use the can air to blow between those crevices. It will help. Blowing like this.. Doesn't.
Very good video, saved me $60. I like to think I wouldn't have blasted my controller's guts with propellant, but I'm glad I watched this first. Thanks, man.
At first, I thought I was guilty of cleaning my controller the wrong way but then I saw you just swab it first and keep the air upright to make it the correct method. I already do that, so I'm good!
Its still the incorrect method. The inside dome completely blocks the compressed air from blowing the joystick components directly. You need to open your controller, pull the sticks off, then blast it.
Wow this guy is good! If I ever have problems like drifting on my PlayStation controller I’ll watch this video when I have those issues. Your awesome dude keep it up!
You dont use compressed air, you use electronic contact cleaner. No q-tip. You spray it in the base of the stick and move the stick around for a minute or so, maybe spray a few more times. Yes, it fixes drift in all controllers.
@_Decadent _Descent Any contact cleaner should be fine. You can go with WD-40 to be safe, just make sure it is contact cleaner not the one you use to remove rust.
OMG! My controller started drifting yesterday and I just got the compressed air can today. Didn't have time to use it. I was just about to do all the mistakes! It seems like the videogames goddess inspired you to do this video exactly today 😍

You saved me $60.00. Just now. Didn't think this would work at all. Honestly blown away that my controller works perfect now. I feel like an idiot for buying 3 controllers now. Thank you. Seriously.
Would this work for xbox?? I've tried cleaning it with a q tip and liquefied hand sanitiser (which contains 70% alcohol and 99% anti bacterial) but it didn't work. And also, it's it fine to use hand sanitiser or dies it have to be rubbing alcohol?
No the reason he recommends rubbing alcohol is because alcohol evaporates very quickly, especially at higher concentrations. With generic products like hand sanitizer you risk impurities in the sanitizer short-circuiting the connections and the motherboard, ultimately frying your controller
Those “air dusters” are liquid refrigerant and contain no moisture. The liquid boils rapidly at room temperature, drying up nearly instantly and leaves no residue. The liquid won’t harm anything, just wait a few minutes to make sure everything is dry. Side note: get air duster cans without bitterent powder in them, it can leave nasty white residue.
I have a weird malfunction on my controller where when I push it forward sometimes another input is made and in my case it doesn’t register as a sprint the moment I press crouch to slide in warzone so I do this awkward crouch sometimes. Other times mid sprint without sliding it will just kinda spas out and start to sprint, cancel sprint and start again all extremely quickly. Tilting the stick around and blowing into it actually dies temporarily fix the problem!
I disassembled my control completely and the mechanism of the Joystics greased them inside with 3inone oil now they feel like new, no more stuck fells like new do not worry about the oil touch electrical parts it does not damage the control you just have to disassemble it and oil the joystics bases 👌
For anyone who is like me and uses rubbing alcohol to clean the whole contoller joysticks and all rub water or a little oil (which is better) on the thumbsticks if you dont after a while the rubber will start to peel from the rubbing alcohol

Not going to hurt anything doing that, However, Its not Really going to help anything either. Now if you were to open the shell and blow directly into the mechanism and remove the hair and crud that tends to build up, You might help. Usually the issue lies in the potentiometers (2 per stick x and y axis) They also get gunked up over time, and can be carefully bent and opened up, cleaned with IPA and good as new. Its more involved and you run the risk of breaking something if you are not used to doing such things as cracking open electronics. It does save you a nice bit of money though, can even buy "broken" controllers from friends, and then clean them and resell them ;)
Snapped the guide for analog clicks in my module on purpose with the intent to fix drift. It worked but a piece landed inside the module where the the analog itself rotates in. Figured never to blow into my control again out of fear of putting dust into the more important part.
I had stick drift to a point where the left stick became unusable. I opened it up cleaned the gunk in anaolog stick and voila no stick drift even on the lowest deadline in most of my games
I would personally recommend disassembling the whole controller then there is no risk of blowing dirt deep into the controller but only do this if your confident enough to do it and make sure you watch tutorials on disassembling it
Just got a ps2 but planning to sell it because I got a launch ps3 too and it's backwards compatible with ps1 and ps2 games so there really is no point in having a ps2 console anymore
I'd never use compressed air externally like that. When it's opened up to blow out the joystick modules, that's different. For external touch up clean, I'd still do the q-tip with the rubbing alcohol. Afterwards it's better to use a vacuum clean hose. If there is any debris, the vacuum will suck it up. With compressed air, any residual debris that is hiding in a crevice, will only get pushed deeper in the controller.
@Tainted Dragon to use any form of a vacuum on any electronic is retarded that is how you build up static electricity which can fuck your electronics up
@@cortlandprince6668 In this specific application... 1. Static charge is too minuscule to do anything as any trace of static will keep grounding out by the touch of bare skin. Also a few specs of dust/debris is incapable of generating enough static to do anything. 2. I'm not vacuuming bare electronics in this case. I'm technically vacuuming a crevice here. I would never use vacuums on bare electronics. That would be careless for a couple reasons. 3. The only grounding point from the outside is the charging port in which you need a serious jolt to cause any damage there.
Q tips and isopropyl is like my favourite thing ever. It's so fun cleaning dirty things with it, there's something satisfying about going from dirty to clean
The compressed air is a fluid inside. If you tilt it the fluid will get in and might break components from the cold. You said moisture which it is not.
I've done that...when I didn't know better. Now I take the controller apart and clean the servos .... Not sure if ita really called that but its the inside of the mechanism, the two very small metal pieces inside the sticks.
Stick drift is a problem with spring tension more so then dust etc. The return spring after a while becomes weaker and doesnt push the analog stick fully to “battery”.
Negative. Its actually the pick ups inside the potentiometer. IF you EVER have "spring tension" drift issues you are being WAY to rough on your controller. Check out a video that shows cleaning the "potentiometers" inside the analog sticks and youll see what i mean.
I just blow at the base of the stick and it fixes the stick drift for a few weeks, I do plan to remplace the sticks with hall effect sticks one day but this method has been working for years so eh, we'll see
I have an issue where my right analog isnt actually drifting but when turning it will be slowed down from time to time. It's basically brand new but hasn't been used in along time. Could there be dust under the stick?
Yes i tried it but will never work. The issue is under the stick. The problem is when you use it your sweat goes into the rings under the stick this causes corrosion and build up in the rings that need to rotate without resistance. I highly suggest open the controller and use a switch cleaner. It cleans and lubricates those copper rings so that the corrossion can be prevented. I use a nacon revelution pro 2 and i get stick drift from time to time. I used every method to fix this. The only one that lasts is the switch cleaner. You get it at car part shops or electrical supply shops. The way you do this wont fix it. The issue is below the dust cover of the stick. Dont be afraid to open a controller. It is easy to put back together. There are vids on how to open all kinds of different controller.
I did this to get rid of the drift. And also did a hard reset recommended from another of john videos and it worked. No more drift. I had one with sticking buttons that I fixed for a friend. I used to tear down last gen controllers no issues all the time.. but these are harder to master. It can be done though.
I can suggest to use svitol to fix the drift of the controller. It worked for me. I opened it up and after removing the rubber on the controller i used it a bit of svitol and then waited a couple of minutes. At the end i closed everything and no more drifting.
My left stick was constantly drifting up when not touching the controller. I took a small piece of cardboard and pushed it in next to ball part of left stick. I then rotated stick in all direction. Did this on top, bottom, left and right of stick. This worked and left stick no longer drifted up.
Have you ever taken apart a ps4 controller? A compressor is not too much. It actually doesn't even help all that much. Its best to take it apart and clean between the plastics close to the sensor. Blowing canned air can never get to those parts of the control because the plastics holding the sensors are clamped shut. Once you know how to do it you can't go back to using canned air like this again. Its both more effective and efficient
And it's really not hard. Just grab a screwdriver laying around like I did and have a can of air and preferably something with a flat head like tweezers or something to pull apart the said clamped shut plastic to get to the sensors.
@@itsmesteve1081 jeez, I don't have the experience to do that, and chill, I'm just a 13 year old, I don't even wanna try it cz if I break it I'm not gettin a new one till I get A+ on my finals so yea
If its L3 (left stick press) is the same fix as normal drift. Must open ur controller, remove battery, open chambers, remove discs in it, clean chambers with q-tip and alcool and ur done. Opening chambers its risky they break easy especially if ur controller itsolder then 1 year, mist be very very careful, because if u break those u need to replace the entire stick unit and rewuire desoldering and soldering
@@Wamed05 yeah bro, the problem is in the motherboard, I had two controllers, I controller was broken and I was using the other one, the one I was using had a stick drift, so I changed the motherboard, I removed the motherboard of the broken controller and replaced it in the controller I use, no stick drift.
Cleaning analog cover not to help analog drift . Metal contact in analog hosing causes the issue that must be cleaned and controller must open . John i cleaned analog cover by alcohol like you said but drift not fix . Thank you .
I know exactly what you are experiencing. I had this with my dualshock 3. It is annoying as hell. Out of nowhere the a perfectly clean stick would just "sweat" some sticky residue. I looked a lot to find a answer, and there's always some idiots making jokes here and there. And some say it is the rubber decaying. Here's the thing: it seems that the rubber may absorb a bit of oil. First I tried just wiping it off. No fix. Then I used some all purpose cleaner (I can't explain what it is - different country; like water and a little bit of soap). No fix. I got mad and used alcohol (ethanol). I don't think it was 70% (very aggressive), maybe 45%. Don't remember. This solved. Never they went sticky again and have texture like new. No decaying. Nothing.
I have a question: *Does it have to be rubbing alcohol, or can it also be like for example hand sanitizer? Because hand sanitizer is still alcohol please respond.*
Canned air will not fix the stick drift. The movement contacts are in too deep for air to make it in that far. If you do not know what you are doing. I do not recommend anyone to try and take apart their controllers. Over time dust can make it into the controllers stick contacts and make it drift or in my case made my right stick move slow. A few drops of electric contact cleaner works wonders. I open up the controller and disconnect the battery. I lightly spray the cleaner into the contact area out side where there is plenty of ventilation. I let it fully dry, then put the controller back together. 99% of the time this fixes the sticks to function properly. The 1% is the controller is worn out and time to solder an new stick controller in or just buy a new controller.
It is not possible to remove that the control on the R3 or L3 button moves only when cleaning with a cotton ball and alcohol or another substance is fixed, the motion sensor is under the button and glued to the motherboard for that reason no matter what. clean the outside nothing will happen.
What I did with my PS4 controller what's cracked it open, then i took it apart and clean the inside terminals which are very small and fragile, but it worked for me! for a limited amount of time. I do recommendations are this, ....go buy a new controller when this starts to happen, and play hard my friend's

It does save you a nice bit of money though, can even buy "broken" controllers from friends, and then clean them and resell them ;)
Now hold on did the controller give you consent to blow it?!?
Snapped the guide for analog clicks in my module on purpose with the intent to fix drift. It worked but a piece landed inside the module where the the analog itself rotates in. Figured never to blow into my control again out of fear of putting dust into the more important part.
This really helped me. Thank you so much!
Thx I love you I didn’t even know what is stick drift and I was just getting a new controller every 3 months
I had stick drift to a point where the left stick became unusable. I opened it up cleaned the gunk in anaolog stick and voila no stick drift even on the lowest deadline in most of my games
Did u just spray the analog with compressed air to clean it?
I would personally recommend disassembling the whole controller then there is no risk of blowing dirt deep into the controller but only do this if your confident enough to do it and make sure you watch tutorials on disassembling it
I still have ps2 and still the controller never drifted
I have a ps3 ps3 and ps4 just got the ps4 like 2 months ago
I got mine a year ago the ps3 was rlly fun tho the classics
@@callustsi1816 sucka, the ps5 came out already why did you buy a ps4.
@@darthjustice7898 Try buying a ps5 if u can find one
Just got a ps2 but planning to sell it because I got a launch ps3 too and it's backwards compatible with ps1 and ps2 games so there really is no point in having a ps2 console anymore
it also works to move the joystik to the left and blow into it to remove any dust
When u are so early that the "I have done this" squad hasn't arrived
🤣
Neither the "i always have a better opinion than you squad..." 👍
Thank you so much cuz I was having stick drift this video helped me so much thank you, i have a doubt can we use water instead of alcohol?
I'd never use compressed air externally like that. When it's opened up to blow out the joystick modules, that's different.
For external touch up clean, I'd still do the q-tip with the rubbing alcohol. Afterwards it's better to use a vacuum clean hose. If there is any debris, the vacuum will suck it up. With compressed air, any residual debris that is hiding in a crevice, will only get pushed deeper in the controller.
@Tainted Dragon to use any form of a vacuum on any electronic is retarded that is how you build up static electricity which can fuck your electronics up
@@cortlandprince6668
In this specific application...
Good advice , can also be recalibrated?
Q tips and isopropyl is like my favourite thing ever. It's so fun cleaning dirty things with it, there's something satisfying about going from dirty to clean
The compressed air is a fluid inside. If you tilt it the fluid will get in and might break components from the cold. You said moisture which it is not.
I've literally NEVER even thought of doing this...... still watched the video for some reason lol
Exactly
Samee
Thanks for the tip. I’ll be sure to share this video to my friends.
Yea what ever man
Huh . I never had a console in my life I just seeing this video because I love his contents
I've done that...when I didn't know better. Now I take the controller apart and clean the servos .... Not sure if ita really called that but its the inside of the mechanism, the two very small metal pieces inside the sticks.
"stick around"
I get it lol
You can use mass air flow sensor cleaner
Stick drift is a problem with spring tension more so then dust etc. The return spring after a while becomes weaker and doesnt push the analog stick fully to “battery”.
Negative. Its actually the pick ups inside the potentiometer. IF you EVER have "spring tension" drift issues you are being WAY to rough on your controller. Check out a video that shows cleaning the "potentiometers" inside the analog sticks and youll see what i mean.
I just blow at the base of the stick and it fixes the stick drift for a few weeks, I do plan to remplace the sticks with hall effect sticks one day but this method has been working for years so eh, we'll see
John my controller drifts took much and I never fixed it
SO HELPFUL THANK YOU SOO MUCH I REALLY NEEDED THAT TIP
Hi, I have an issue, when I hold L2 my cammera slightly starts going up, that makes 0 sense what is that?
Mine when i press l2 the character starts moving forward😆
Same here stick drift, ive just bought a pad today but its smaller than the official pad so im getting used to it..
I have an issue where my right analog isnt actually drifting but when turning it will be slowed down from time to time. It's basically brand new but hasn't been used in along time. Could there be dust under the stick?
Yo u so famous now lol i remembered u always stream bo3 and always watching it and saying youll be famous one day and it came true nc work man ❤️
Yes i tried it but will never work.
Bruh I literally be doing that😂
My 🎮 right analog is not working properly. When i play games, camera angle auto moves to up direction. Can i fix it at home?
yes that is stick drift take it apart and clean it
I did this to get rid of the drift.
At the end i closed everything and no more drifting.
make a tutorial on how to replace the joystick module with soldering :3
My left stick was constantly drifting up when not touching the controller. I took a small piece of cardboard and pushed it in next to ball part of left stick. I then rotated stick in all direction. Did this on top, bottom, left and right of stick. This worked and left stick no longer drifted up.
I feel like a compressor would be too much, I just blow on it myself, and yes I am careful of spilling my salaiva
John is SOOO smart dude
Im having kinda weird stick drift
When i press L2 i geting drift for some reason
(Say it in every single john video so he see it)
sure L2? L3 maybe?
@@ziwalker2954 exactly
My character looks up to the sky when I press R3...
Cleaning analog cover not to help analog drift . Metal contact in analog hosing causes the issue that must be cleaned and controller must open . John i cleaned analog cover by alcohol like you said but drift not fix . Thank you .
Not first not last but clicked fast as f**k 😂
i was first somehow
Just thinking... what about a small amount of electronic contact cleaner? In spray.
Hey John I was wondering why does my analog stick become oily, and I need to wipe it everytime I use it. I'm abit worried.
I have this same issue sometimes. Are my hamds sweaty sometimes?
@@blacktimbs8354 lol
NOOO
this is still stupid! you need to disassemble the controller
Use actual compressed air set on low psi if needed. No risk of getting liquid in your controller
I get this in my recommend right after I just put my controller in water to try fixing it.🤦🏽♂️
why did you put it in water
@@mirabile1221 I wanna know to lmao
some people don't deserve controllers
truth seeker I agree with you they can just play with the console in general lol
Another video well done

Wtf is wrong with you mr. angry face man???
@@shahnoorsyed6769 what????
@@cisco5338 I said wtf is wrong with you mr. angry face man
It is not possible to remove that the control on the R3 or L3 button moves only when cleaning with a cotton ball and alcohol or another substance is fixed, the motion sensor is under the button and glued to the motherboard for that reason no matter what. clean the outside nothing will happen.
why am I here? I don't even have a ps4, lol
Same😔
The application is pretty general here in which it could be used on any controller with joystick.
Also I don't have a PS4 as well. lol
My method is qtip+isopropyl. Any additional stick weirdness is solved with a bit of circuit safe formulation wd40
