Excellent build quality, charges them really well and works fantastic.
Thank goodness I'll never be burdened with that absurd and inferior PS5. I'd much prefer sticking to my PS4 and getting a PC as well, since a PC is clearly and undeniably superior to that console, now and always.
A trick you can do to get more life out of a mini usb cable is to get some pins (sewing pins) and gently pushing them _under_ the small metal tabs on the top of the connector. Leave them in for a few hours at least and you'll notice when you remove the pins, the tabs stay up instead of sinking below into the slot.
If I may add another approach: magnetic USB cables these are cables, on which the USB-connector is magnetically connected to the cable itself. The cable can be removed from the connector without any hassle and the connector can be left in the charging port on your controller. I've been using the Nyko one for years, like since the PS4 came out. It's amazing because it has a dongle type thing that plugs in to the controller port, and magnetically adheres to the dock, so there's no unplugging or fiddling to get it seated, you just set your controller on to it. It's also really cool because the dock is actually like a brick that you can use alone, or snap a second one on to charge 2 controllers, with the same single power cord. It's a freaking amazing invention. If I need to, I can just take out the dongle, stick it to something metal (so I don't loose it), and plug the controller into the micro usb at my couch, so I never have to worry about a dead controller, I can just keep playing with it plugged in. I'm disabled, so I've set up bunch of charging cables right by where I sit and sort of made a couch command center, with laptop, micro usb, mini usb (for the PS2), usb-c, wireless, oneplus warp, pretty much everything. I highly recommend it 😉 I've also got usb extension cables on hand. With 4 gamers in my house, I take charging very seriously 😁

The very first thing I did when I got my PS4 was to buy the official Sony controller charging station. Having a dedicated controller charger was the best accessory I ever had for my PS3, and I’ve continued the tradition to this day now with my PS5. I actually bought the official Sony DualSense charger a few weeks prior to the PS5’s release in 2020 (and over a year before I actually managed to get my PS5) knowing it would be a worthwhile investment.

THANK YOU, my controller keeps turning off for no apparent reason and I was wondering why. Now I know and will definitely get the charging station you recommended. Your videos really help out and are great for learning important things about PS as a whole!👍
This may be a long-shot, but check the power saving settings on your console. By default, I think the controller is set to turn itself off if it's not being used after a certain time. Perhaps check those settings. If that's not the case, and the controller's outside of its warranty period, try replacing the battery. Cheap batteries can be bought on eBay and there's many useful videos (including ones from John), that show how to replace them.
I having a ps4 controller that I bought 8 years ago. Never had any problems. But recently my USB port has stopped working so I had 2 options. I could go on a repair mission, buy a new USB hub for $3 on Ebay and fix it, or I could have bought a new controller which is more expensive. I decided to repair it by my own. I dont have any technical knowledge or skills. I just tried and it worked. So to those who are scared their controller could die from "wrong" charging", its really not a big deal to replace this USB hub in case it gets broken.

I bought a mount that keeps my controllers charged from day one. There is a stand for the VR helmet that holds controllers and the move sticks. Works great
No, We all knew about this 7-8 years ago. It just we didn't care because we had the normal way to charge it. Like why spent almost a hundred dollars to charge your controllers? why? because it looks cool to have that device? nah fam, i have my old style cable, thanks anyway. However, what we didn't know was how fast and easy these cables get fuck and u need to replace them. Paying from 10-15 $ (depending where u live and where u buy it) every couple of time in a year. So yeah, we know about the device. We have been seeing it since the Ps4-Pro days as it was market with the console version. So yeah, i think the most important information here is the flaw on the USB cable tho. I always thought it was my fault for not taking care of my shit but i didn't know that even if i took care of it, it would still degrade to the point where it wouldn't charge anymore.
@@brandonzero07 almost a hundred dollars? What shit are you smoking? The official sony charging stands are like $25.... and these stands have existed since the ps3...
@@Azhrei2000 my guy, these shit were promoted when the PS4-Pro came out and they were almost a hundred worth. If u saw this on another place, don't come towards me. Idk when u saw this with the PS3 when the controller doesn't even have the other the thing to connect. Now, if u are talking about the old school stand that came out around the Ps2 days, those aren't the ones that were shown in this video. We are talking about to an alternative to the USB Charger. The PS2 nor the PS3 had an alternative charged connection so idk what YOU are smoking tho.
What is helpful about this at all? No one has this issue. Theres a 100% likelihood your controller will get stick drift before you ever "break the USB port" or w.e. he's trying to claim here.
@Brandon I had to send in my ps5 for repair because of the usb wear. I might buy a charging station. Anyway you are wrong, and it happens to many people.
If you take care when using a USB cable, you won't need this. Also this looks like it plugs into a wall plug socket, which is wasted energy and if its powered via the PlayStation and your controller dies during a game you're not exactly going to say "Sorry guys, I need to put my controller on charge, cover me while it charges" and slap it on the dock.
This is really cool compared to other consoles where you have to put something in the USB port and then use that to connect to the dock. As much as I like the ability to use AA batteries I think the steam controller is the worst and I ended up using that thing wired.
Big part, for me at least, in why the micro USB cables would fail is the position in which the cable sits on the surface where you have your controller, because the plug is under the light bar AND angled down slightly, if you have the DS4 on a flat surface while charging the micro USB side of the cable has pressure put on it upwards which can over time bend the metal portion of the cable and break contacts inside. It's not very good design which thankfully was corrected on the DualSense. Since I started propping up my DS4 on something or placing it upside down while charging I haven't had to replace the micro USB cable.
I bought that charge station when I got my PS4, saves so much time and effort. Just place the Dualshock on it and within just over an hour your controller is charged
The EXT is an extension data/charging port. On my controller, Dual shock 4, I use it in the charging stand, but I also have a keyboard attachment that fits between the handles and plugs into the audio jack and the EXT port .. the audio passes through to an audio port on the bottom of the keyboard, and ext keyboard uses the EXT. You have to get the PS4 to recognize the keyboard as an accessory, but after that, any time you type, or send text message in or out of game, you simply type it in. Another bonus is if you don't use the keyboard, it works as an expanded battery pack and has it's own micro-USB charging port and you can charge the Dual shock battery and the keyboard at the same time. There are also battery packs that fit between the handles with audio throughout jacks and use the EXT to power the controller, tripping or quadrupling the play time of the controller, usually allowing you to charge every 2-3 days, however the best way to charge the controller itself to give the longest battery life is to use the charging dock, as most docks can cycle the battery and reset the charge memory of the battery, ensuring you get years of full battery life compared to a memory logged battery that won't charge from Micro-USB cables. A charging dock is the best way to go, and if you can find it, the official charging dock from Sony for the controller is the best you can get for the battery, but aftermarkets will do just as well. So despite problems with Micro-USB and USB-C cable connectors going bad because you shove it' in at an angle instead of straight in... A dock doesn't just save cable/port wear and tear, it also extends the life of the battery considerably because it cycles the battery and removes the charge memory of the battery.. (charge memory happens to rechargable batteries over time where the cell reports full when it is only 70% or 60% or 50% charged.. people think the battery is going out.. a dock will determine the actual battery charge level, and if it isn't 90-100%, the charger will drain the battery and do a conditioned trickle charge which resets the charge memory of the battery, this is automatic.. this cycling works until the actual battery is dead from the cell decay.. but on the Dualshick 4 battery, mine is a Day 1 controller with no battery replacement, and it is still gaming @9 hours a session with it being over 8 years old.. My DualSense is still gaming at Day 1 time frame, 12-14 hours with full haptics per game session. The charging docks are well worth the investment over the usb charging cable.
@@say-ef NP, also there is a Dualshock 4 back button attachment from Sony that plugs into the EXT port as well if you want to remap buttons to the back of the controller for middle fingers.
After six years I never had to buy a second Ps4 Controller still using the same good old one I never hit or smacked my controller and also I am still same using the usb cable You dont need to that charging station all you have to do is using your controller with care. But still for some ppl this will save some money for sure
Cables are still worth it, you have no idea how many times i was playing battle royale games and my controller died so i had to play on the charging station lol
I've been using the same cable and controller for 4 years now but on my PC, since I switched to PC Gaming and rarely touch my PS4 anymore. The cable is connected to the controller 24/7 for over 3 years now and it's working like day one. Maybe just letting it in, is the safest option 😂 don't know if the battery life has suffered but I don't care as long as it works.
I found that docks in general also keep your TV cabinet much more organized. I have a dock for both my PS4 and Switch Pro Controller, and I'll likely get one for whatever next gen console I pick up.
i bought the OIVO cooling/ charging dock for my ps4 and have a separate charging stand (the standing back to back playstation charging dock shown at 2:11) as i have 4 controllers and am quite impressed with the OIVO honestly. everything is set and ready to go when i need it, as i cycle through controllers in a rotation pattern making the battery now die from not being used.
With minimal usb slots on the ps5, I've got a 3rd party dock plugged into an unused usb on my TV. Works great as I keep the usb slot free for my external drive and a spare for other accessories/connection needs.
I think it's an exaggeration to say that charging plugging to the console is "the worst way". Yeah, the Micro USB connector can wear over time, but the console USB port provides the exact current and voltage the controllers needs, with no risk to the battery. The worst way is to charge it through a wall adapter, even worse if it is a 20 Watt charger or higher.
Also, a lot of charging stations come with an USB plug with no wall adapter whatsoever. You should check under the device if there's any label indicating the recommended energy input if you don't want it to be damaged after some time. Most of the stations have inputs of 5 volts 2 amps. An old phone wall charger will do the trick nicely.
Yeah, this is a dumb video. So you can charge with a dock... that doesn't make it superior or inferior to plugging it in. Micro USB isn't that fragile at all, unless you're a doofus who just constantly yanks on things and crams plugs in the wrong way.
@@spork8655 Actually, John makes a valid point. Not only is charging via USB slower, particularly with micro/mini USB, the ports can become distorted and bent out of shape no matter how careful you may be when plugging in or removing a cable from it. Not an issue with PS5's dual-sense thanks to USB-C. It's also inconvenient using USB, and it stresses the battery. They only have so many charge cycles, so if you're just topping them up slowly with a cable, you're limiting the lifetime of your battery. The official Sony (and some 3rd Party) docks, actually have an AC cable to power the dock, which not only frees up your console's ports, but also charges the controller quicker, and safer, as they provide overcharging protection.
@@Rob.Hinkley I think the big thing is there's no statistical data on how many people experience cables going bad so any statements on the subject are purely conjecture from a relatively small sample size complaining on message boards. Personally I'm still using an original USB charging cable years later so they don't all wear out and break down.
@@brentchesson2179 I wholeheartedly agree. It's not the cable that breaks down so much as the port on the controller itself becoming bent out of shape after years of use. While it was more of a problem on the PS3's DS3 Controllers, it still happens on the PS4 DS4's. If you're constantly plugging and disconnecting the cable, wiggling it about, it may damage the port over time. It depends on how careful you are with it. That being said, you're less likely to damage the DS4 by using the EXT port to charge it. And, by using an AC powered dock, not only do you free up the USB's on your console, but you can give your controllers a full quick charge without needing the console on or in rest mode. It's just better for your console and the controller (namely the port and battery).
I've been lucky enough to get the official charging dock at the time I bought my used ps4 (felt surprisingly new and I have no regrets), but I have seen my younger brothers complain about the cables not working. Now I realize just how good having the charging dock is (originally I wanted it because I was too lazy to plug in the cable every time I stopped playing (also can we talk about how great it feels to just switch controllers when the other one is on low battery :D)) Anyway so yeah, accidentally made a great choice. Now I can laugh at my younger brothers who don't have a charging dock B)
the best charger is a cell phone block. And don't bend any wire near it's plug-ins where most of the damage is done. I have charging wires near 10 yrs old. and charging station were always better
I had the exact same reaction, like, wtf, I NEVER had or saw anyone I know to have a problem with a micro USB cable in a daily bases, for sure it may get a problem with years of usage, but I never saw people talk like it happened regularly, I mean, we do connect a micro USB cable in our cellphones regularly, why wouldn't that be a problem too? Makes no sense "As an associate, I may earn from qualifying purchases.", oh, now I see the real reason for the video, lol
My little brother always broke PS4 controllers and chargers and I'd usually replace the charge ports on them until I found out about those magnetic ones that connect and disconnect without having to take the piece out and used those, no problems since
Another option is to use magnetic cables. They're also great for people who find themselves pulling, jerking or otherwise over-extending the cable because the micro usb plug itself won't suffer the stress of such abuse.
I had a PS4 almost from launch, and even though I traded it in I kept 2 PS4 controllers. I charge them with the original cables still today. This video baffles me.
I have the original ps4 charging station for like 4 or 5 years and I use it a lot. I only use a usb cable to connect my controller to my pc or to the playstation
i got that push-down one, visually identical to the one in the video, its either powerA or nyko, dont remember. still works fantastically what... ?6? years later? just awesome. i wouldnt call it clunky tho. the click down to charge and click down to release if a great design.
At 1:35 on the left that stand thing that “can charge” 2 controllers at once” actually can break your controllers because it sends out over 5 volts of energy which can fry your controller’s battery pack… I learned that the hard way
It's a good tip, but if you use the official attachment to have two back buttons, you can't dock it, and unplugging the attachment would lead to similar problems but on the bottom connection
I never used the USB in the console, I still charge my controller with a USB but I use a wall charger do do that and you can use it as you play if you have a long enough cable
Just get a usb cable with a magnetic micro usb fitting. Then it is easily disconnected - just disconnect the lead, leaving the small micro usb end in the controller. No wiggling of the connection or stress on the controller, so should not deteriorate over time. I got mine from aliexpress.
An even better option is buying a magnetic charging cord. Put the adapter in the controller once and leave it there. I have a charging station that also came with magnetic adapters.
Dang, that really is the best way to charge your controller. Its weird because i currently have 3-4 ps4 controllers and no console, but i disassembled/reassembled them because of this trick that helps charge the controllers. Im guessing none of them broke, the cables are a bitch but besides that, im glad i know about this now because it was a real headache for me
Also with this method, it allows you to constantly charge a controller all the time so you can swap between the two, when one controller is fully charged, making you game for hrs and hrs without ever having to worry about a dead controller.
I agree with the advice to get a charging stand. One criticism of the video, you don't need to say 4 times about the micro USB in repetition. The message of your video is good, just feels padded for length.
I'd knew about this years ago. I brought the charging stand when it released and I've never had to replace my controller. Only the time when I decided to get a scuf for my pc instead of using my worn out original PS4 controller
I also have a charging station however it uses the micro usb on the back of the controller and i havent had any issues with connectivity and charging in years. I will say a drawback to this is not being able to directly connect your controller to the console but I have had no issues with the bluetooth connection luckily. I 100% recommend buying a charging dock of either micro usb or the charging point on the front of the controller.

I been using that same brand from oivo with their PS4 vertical stand which also charges the controller in that same way has been useful for the last couple years and still holds up well, I’m so glad Sony decided to make a ps5 version for their controllers such a great way to charge them

You can also buy a micro USB cable for half the price and will last u the same amount of time
I have a platform that has fans in it, 2 charging ports, and slots for holding cases. Can't recall the price, but it was fairly cheap and works perfectly.
THANK YOU, my controller keeps turning off for no apparent reason and I was wondering why. Now I know and will definitely get the charging station you recommended. Your videos really help out and are great for learning important things about PS as a whole!👍
That sounds like a battery issue.
If it goes off randomly with full charge.
@@Rob.Hinkley Thanks for the tip, I will definitely look into that and see what I can find:)
I already had one but it's a micro USB and have the original charger from the PS4 box for almost 5 years without having any problems with it.

HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS
No, We all knew about this 7-8 years ago.
But i know for a fact that the stands were advertised around that price and at the time when the PS4-Pro came out.
Lol how have you never seen controller docks before? Not sure good question.
I just got the magnetic universal chargers and leave the head in the controller and just attaching the magnetic cord to it. Easy peasy
Finally, a video about "things you probably didn't know" that actually gives valuable info. This is super useful.
What is helpful about this at all? No one has this issue. Theres a 100% likelihood your controller will get stick drift before you ever "break the USB port" or w.e. he's trying to claim here.

@@stormydeath8121 happens to dumb dumbs that don't take proper care of their systems
What’s up guys? Many PlayStation users don’t know this, but once your controller battery dies, you will in fact have to charge it.
that was sarcasm right? kinda like this video lol...
Actually on Xbox controllers you can get a battery pack + dock combo and the dock connects to the battery itself and not the controller
@@Sharkcomet Yep my bad. But it's still not built into the controller so the official ones don't do that.
I have that same oivo but it’s a aftermarket charger it works great 👍
I bought that charge station when I got my PS4, saves so much time and effort. Just place the Dualshock on it and within just over an hour your controller is charged
Man, I've always wondered what that EXT port was.
Thx John! 👍 😎
@@crypticvyper3092 omg thx
@@say-ef NP, also there is a Dualshock 4 back button attachment from Sony that plugs into the EXT port as well if you want to remap buttons to the back of the controller for middle fingers.

Another option is to use magnetic cables. They're also great for people who find themselves pulling, jerking or otherwise over-extending the cable because the micro usb plug itself won't suffer the stress of such abuse.

Very informative. Thanks.
Do you have a recommendation for PS5 controller charging stations?
At 1:35 on the left that stand thing that “can charge” 2 controllers at once” actually can break your controllers because it sends out over 5 volts of energy which can fry your controller’s battery pack… I learned that the hard way
You mean to tell me that I was doing the right thing all along? Let's go!
Bro 1st i heard to not charge your controller with a charging block , now its don't charge your controller with your console,
What do i do 😰
It's a good tip, but if you use the official attachment to have two back buttons, you can't dock it, and unplugging the attachment would lead to similar problems but on the bottom connection
I never used the USB in the console, I still charge my controller with a USB but I use a wall charger do do that and you can use it as you play if you have a long enough cable

Luckily I knew this from the start and got some chargers that use that port. Thanks for reassuring my info
Thanks a lot man. I always had trouble using these cables
The first thing i bought with my ps4 back in the day was the PlayStation brand charger dock. I STILL USE both controllers that came day one.
Thanks for the heads-up because I was going crazy.

Wow never knew this! I’ve gotten two or three different cables in the past few months. Thanks for the insight.
I have a charging station, and the controllers go upside down, so when one disconnects I take the other one, and charge the other one

I'd knew about this years ago. I brought the charging stand when it released and I've never had to replace my controller. Only the time when I decided to get a scuf for my pc instead of using my worn out original PS4 controller
I highly recommend the charging stations as well. Much better than the USB cables.
