- We walked into the garage and picked two cars to compare 1/4 mile times. One is a very low mile 67 427/400HP coupe corvette, the other is a 66 327/350 Coupe. Both cars are great runners and a blast to drive! We also include some footage of other c2 corvettes we have, like our 67 427*435HP car, a pro touring 1966, and a 1966 427/425HP Car! If you love corvettes, you won't want to miss this one!

My brother had the 67 -427. He would come home on the weekend and if I detailed it on Saturday morning I could drive it the rest of the day. I was 18 and a senior in HS. Man was I ever the king of the block! What a car. Hard to shift from 2-3 but after a while you get the hand of it. A great car, side pipes and all.
Hard to shift 2-3 would mean get it in the air and adjust that shift mechanism, because that's when the shifter jams and you ain't goin' nowhere.
@@edgarcook9607 No I really sat back too far from the steering. Back then we thought you should be straight armed. If I was closer I would be able to make that long throw. I had the same problem with the early 930 Turbo, a four speed with a long throw from 2nd to 3rd.
That was a helluva lotta fun! I've become so used to seeing these cars in parades and parked at show-n-shines. You can almost hear the car's soul screaming for a good romp on the gas. Thanks for answering the call and reminding us of how much fun these cars can be!
The best-looking Corvette ever made if you were to ask me. 5 years of awesome looking vettes then it was over in 67.
Couldn't agree more💯❗️👍
I agree!
@@steelpenguin1 yup work of art along with e type and gullwing.
I love the 63-67 the most ,but the 56-57,61-62,,and 68-69 run a close second!
Zora Arkus Duntov said of the C2: It's less of good car, more like a bad airplane in that it refuses to fly! So cool.
Memphis Dan LeLoLai
Awesome seeing you beat on these 2 a little bit. The 327/350hp car while not pulling on the top also seems to have a close ratio transmission which really kills it from a stop. Beautiful cars and people today don't remember that they were built to be driven. I've had a couple of people voice their disapproval after seeing me pull gears like a man in my 72 LS5 4spd. Eh F em.
I'd agree about the trans ratios. Wide ratio Muncie for originality but fro street driving a 2.64 Super T10 would be nice, too.
Nice driving man!!! I love to see how fast the old cars were when you got a good driver behind the wheel!!!
The shifting you did in the blue 66 are some of the best shifts I have ever seen on video!!!!!!!!
Thanks! Hopefully we can fix the rpm issue and have a real test!
@@HorsepowerDepot I would say valve springs, and points spring, great 👍 shifting, you feel it fall off power and grab a gear.
@Pantera-wu9ty You should look up the Grump banging on a 4 speed.
Very Difficult to hit a 2-3 shift that clean. Nice gear jamming 👍
Nothing like sixties fun 👍
Y'all have an awesome job.
That’s the way to bang those gears! Reminds me of me when i was a teenager, 69 Camaro, 365 horse 327 w/ M-22.
now that, my friends is what a 427 Corvette is built for....Straight up chewing through the pavement. Cool video.
I had a red 1964 Corvette 327 ci. 4 sd, with side pipes in 1974, and used to spin donuts in the parking lot where I worked. lol
That was impressive driving, and I've never seen better shifts, those clutch's were pretty tough too. I used to race at an all Corvette drag event yearly, It was amazing how slow most people shift. My older brother taught me and he was similar to you, but would lift. I still have a 65 coupe 350 HP and a 67 435 roadster. You guys are doing a great job
I was gonna say, the eliminated any deficiencies in driver very well. lol
I once hit 2nd gear with a Hurst Supershifter and broke the attaching hole bosses off a Muncie tranny. No doubt the bolts must have been a bit loose or that couldn't have happened. Regardless, no pussying around shifting for this guy. Back in those years of few aftermarket clutch parts, the hot setup was to run a Mopar 3 finger (I think 10 3/4 inch pressure plate instead of the GM diaphragm unit.
On another note, if a person wanted his Vette to handle better, dual action shocks on the front were a huge improvement. At the time Koni was the hot setup, but when in the military back then and earning $288/mo. one did not go out and spend $75 on a set of 2 shocks. Fortunately I somehow learned that the front shocks on Ford Fairlanes were the same length and had the same mounting system. AND the 427 Fairlane came with factory dual action shocks from Ford and you could buy a replacement set at your local parts house for around $15.
Those were some really sweet cars. Love the 63-67 Vettes. With 67 big block being my favorite, and the 63 being my second favorite, because of the split window.
That's the trend: '67 427 's outpricing the Split Windows
I predicted 14.5 @ 100mph for the small block and a 13.8 @ 104mph for the big block. BTW, nice speed shifting
Unmistakable sound of a big block. Owned a '68 tricked out 427 with well over 500 hp, T10 4 speed 4:11 posi in the late 70s. What a beast. My daily driver that ran very strong and was extremely reliable, even in cold Michigan winters. Great memories.
" put down some marks". Such children.
In 1968 my Dad bought a 67 stingray convertible that had been stripped. He rebuilt the whole car and put in a 327. I remember him trying different intake arrangements. He started with a 4bbl then went to 3 duces then 2 - 4bbls. There was rubber down the street from our driveway in the suburbs. He sold it just before I got my driver's license. I asked him why and he said " that's all I need is a 16 year old kid in a Corvette". He wasn't wrong!
That 427 with side pipes sounds SO GOOD!!!! I don't care if they're bad for racing :P I need that sound in my everyday life :P
Why are side pipes no good for drag racing?
Nevermind I just watched the video
Part of reason for such a good sound was the solid cam and lifters.
So I have the 1967 vette roadster with the same 327 L79 and actually those aren't bad time considering there are two rather "robust" people aboard. 102 mph is a good seed. Good video!
You calling me fat!? Lol! I agree it’s not a bad time, but I think our l79 has some improvement with some valve springs. Thing fell flat on its face at 5,000 rpm’s.
What an all around stellar video.
The 13.6 the big block ran is exactly what Google stated it would run. You were shifting the absolute hell out of those cars! Superb driving. It's neat to see younger guys beating on these cars rather than boomers puttin' down the road never seeing about 2500 rpm.
I like seeing guys drive these cars, and drive them hard.
They were built for that.
I purchased a new 1967 Vette with the 435 HP engine . Had the distributer recurved @ Nickey Chevrolet in Chicago & put a 2 .5" exhaust system with Corvair TurboCharger mufflers . With stock tires it ran the quarter @ 12.8 secs, & 117 MPH. Later with Goodyear Radial tires it ran 12.6 secs & 119 M(H. I kick myself in the ass quite often for getting rid of that Vette
Nice speed shifting, lost art with automatics 👍
great shifting my man. Made me smile hearing the bird chirp through 3 gears :)
I remember the time when we ran the Big blocks with lead fuel... thank you for the memories nice channel
I remember when regular gas was .28 cents, Premium was .32 cents per gallon. Unleaded gas didn't exist. Regular had 96 octane, Premium was 101. Sunoco stations had 104.
Some Union gas stations had 112 octane.
That Johnny Cash Vette is amazing. That has got to be one of the cleanest restomod C2's I have ever seen. Great job on that build
Very nice vettes! I still love the C2 lines... I have a Draggy and not once have I tried to see what my DD C6Z will do, you've inspired me to give it a shot.
Thanks for bringing back the memories young man. 🙂
Love the fun laid back Approach of this video! Definitely would enjoy more of these videos just playing around and testing the cars-is fun and sometimes you get surprised
Some videos can be difficult to make, these are always the most fun to make and easiest to edit. Thanks for watching!
That first blue car looks incredible! Paint looks amazing! Pretty much perfect color I would want on a C2.... or a C3... or a C... you get the point!
She looks good on camera for sure! Up close she shows her age lol.
We've driven quite a few 427 Vettes over the years and they were all strong runners. Nice driving by the way!
My dad would approve of the shifting skills. 🙌💪🇺🇸
First time watching you guys n I love your laid back style! Also,it is rare to see anyone take two vets like those n just run em all out. Thanks guys
Thanks for watching! We appreciate it!
Great video! Those cars were made to run, not pampered! You should build the 327 to Z-28 specification with a 2-4 Cross ram with some 4:33 Pontiac gears! What I wouldn't give to own any of those cars. I used to shift my 66 Big block Chevelle like that with stock shifter (they're really long throw )and Muncie transmission. A Hurst makes all the difference! I'm 67 and I couldn't keep my foot out of them. Thanks for bringing them back to life!!!
Wouldn't that 66 have been a small journal? What are the odds that the engine got a large journal when the CE was installed? Seems as though the CE program would just be installing the most available engines at the time of installation. So if the exchange was done after 1968 it could be a large journal?
Best looking corvette ever. The early C3's are nice as well.
Another super fun video. Thanks!
Tying up the car in the top of the transport is some great info to know. And getting 56 runs on a rear end is amazing. with the burn-outs and instant acceleration. Keep up the great videos Clay, Good luck
Love seeing you guys pound on classic vettes and making the purists cringe. And Dragy content is always the best. Nice work guys!
If anyone cringes at this, they're not purists, they're puzzies.
This is the best vintage musclecar video I've seen....Really well done!!!!
Thank you! Was a fun video to make for sure!
My kind of shifting! Never let off between gears, all my current classics are stick cars,,,and I'm 70 y.o. nothing like a four speed,,even my 70' 10 second nova is a stick, as well as my 66' buick g.s. four speed. Also my 65' comet four speed! Unfortunately I had to sell my 68' 4 speed vette! TO PAY FOR CHEMOTHERAPY FOR MY DOGGIE.
Sounds like you’ve had some nice rides your time. It’s a shame you can’t even find sticks anymore.
That's quite a collection of mid 60s corvettes you have to play with ! You do know how to paint them up real nice.
Thanks! My grandpa lays the paint. He’s been doing it his whole life!
You guys have way too much fun at work! The hole shot in the big block was insane, looks like you were struggling for traction! Those are such bad ass cars that you build, keep up the great work
I just adore that 67. That green is beautiful. She is a runner to
Another great one guys. Put some springs on the little l79 and give her another go. Thanks again for the great videos.
I think it would be a close race with some valve springs on the small block!
Fun seeing what these cars can do most people don't drive like you. Lol
Thats probably a good thing, I break everything I drive lol!
That '67 is a beautiful car. What a cool color!
I bought a 67 Corvette in 1968. It was equipped with zero options. It was a convertible, white with a blue top and blue interior and 8,000 miles. I paid $3500 for it. No radio, 3-speed manual with 300hp 327 engine. I enjoyed it for a few years and then traded it in on an El Camino, The Corvette has gone through several owners and is still in excellent condition, except a factory radio was added. There were only a few Corvettes sold with zero options and I have wondered what today's value would be. Would it be low because of no options..... or would it be high because of being very rare? Did the owner who had the radio installed decrease the value of the car??
Sometimes on the BBC. If the initial timing isn't right it will knock out the starter. Believe it or not.
Thats something we need to check after we put the new intake on, I don't think it's far off, we all have a pretty good ear for timing, but it could be the issue!
I fun video! Love the rubber trails with the rear cam!
My L79 (stock) will wind to the moon so there was definitely something wrong if yours wouldn't wind beyond 5k. L79s need steep gearing to really turn good times so the gears in either car might also explain some of the gap between the two. But 13.42 for the 427 is pretty outstanding. Wish I could shift as well and as quickly as you do!
Yep 6800 easy
you can definitely drive a stick! you should add one to your f.a.s.t. group of cars you bring, so fun. stick cars feel so fast but hard to beat an automatic.
Back when these cars were new, the manual was king, mainly because it had 4 gears and the autos only had 2 or 3, the autos of the time didn't hold up to the power and torque these monsters were making with just slight modifications.
New? Yes. Old? No.
16:25 you certainly have some sweet toys! That big rig is a beautiful RV!!
Those 1/4 mile times were pretty good back in the sixties.
For sure!
Yeah, the 327 car beat the time my 351W auto 1970 Mach 1 ran back around 1974 by a couple tenths. 😉🤣
@@danmyers9372 In 1970 the only 351W available was a 2 barrel 250 HP gross 9:1 CR low performance engine. For 1970 Ford switched to the 351C as the performance small block (or more correct 335 engine family). I am a Ford guy but realistically unless there were a good amount of high performance mods done to the engine your Mach 1 wasn't within a couple of tenths of the 327 car.
Fabulous. I went with ,66 327/350, with solid lifters and run it out in third to 7000 to avoid the end of the quarter in fourth. The sound of a short stroke high revving 327 or 283 is heavenly Nascar like.
Such beautiful Vettes!
Thanks!
Reason the green 67's faster than the blue one hello its a Big Block they fast and nasty bad !!!
Hell yeah !!!!
327 350 hp running right ain’t no slouch.
Big block don’t nessasarily mean nothing 327/350 will blow the doors off of a lot of big block cars becaose they are lighter wind tighter and faster. Seen a many of smallblock destroy big blocks
I’ve worked on a small block that someone “massaged” into a so called racing engine that would rattle the starter bolts out. It turned out to be a massively out of balance bottom end. 🤷🏻♂️ That Marlboro maroon ‘Vette you just painted is absolutely gorgeous! 🤙
high compression engines require a rear brace on the starter to block to control "torque twist" same with gm 6.5 diesels which will snap the one bolt otherwise....
I bought my 1963 vette in March 1969. It was my every day car for 3 years. It sit in my garage for 25 years while I raised 3 kids. I restored it in 1998 and had nice Sunday rides for 17 years. I sold it after owning it for 46 years so I could enjoy a modern muscle car before I got to old to drive.
Great shifting 👍🏼
Thank you!
New subscriber! That is the way those cars were made to be driven. I own a 1965 396/ 425hp convertible. Mine has the original engine. I would be afraid to hammer it that hard.
Thanks for subscribing! Hammer down that’s what it was built for!
Dude! Nice job with the shifting ... you are as fast as a frikin Turbo 400 with a shift kit. Must be nice to live in Indiana where there are never any radar cops :)
Thanks! Were in a good area, not many police officers out where we're at.
I live in Southern Indiana on the river and as long as you are not in town or being dangerous in the country you can have some fun here or there where I live.
@@cjcoleman7372 That's cool. I'm in NE Ohio and it used to be laid back but now there are more State troopers and it's pretty risky running through the gears and over 100 mph.
@@zone47 you mean 100 mph in "Mexico "? Lol
@@cjcoleman7372 I thought Southern Indiana was Mexico. When did that change? ☹️
My 68 427 400 ran a 13.50 at Detroit dragway in 1969. 4 speed 3.70 gears. Without a passenger.
OMG! I like the video part of the 66 in beginning better but that’s just me. Great video!
the "427" was Chevys swan song....great motor...!...great video....!
Johnny Cash is bad ass! That is everything I could ever hope to do to a Frankenstein car.
Awesome video man... my dads buddy had one just like the 67 you have...
Man, that 427 is insane.
That 327 is a high 13Sec car with slicks. He burned rubber all through 1st gear. Add a modern 6 speed manual trans and its easy low 13s.
My man, you can shift like a beast!! That shit right there just earned you a subscriber. Now, I'm bout to go watch all your old videos.
Hell Yeah!!! Thanks!
I had a 67 427. Side pipes were very loud, on my convertible. It was a violent engine. I drove it hard. Almost died in it...flipped it end over end..I miss that car so much. There's nothing like a big block. Nice shifting.
Not to be a party pooper, but I fondly remember when the 289 Mustang hammered the 327 Vette in SCCA road racing, for the National Championship in B Production Class for 3 years straight! Particularly amusing because the Mustang was never made to be a Corvette killer, there just weren't any Camaros around yet. But a Corvette killer is just what a certain Carroll Shelby's shop created. Those were tough times for the Corvette in road racing, as the 427 Cobra took care of the 396/427 Corvette in similar fashion. Just the same, these 60s Corvettes were the best looking of all and could never be mistaken for any other car.
Stop dreaming 😅
@@JohnWinzil - Sounds like you are in doubt about my comments! No dreaming going on here John, just pure facts! The 327 Stingray just couldn't compete with Shelby's GT 350 Mustang. Look it up if you want proof. Ken Miles enjoyed taunting the Stingrays with his GT 350R Mustang, then just slammed the door on them in the 1965, '66 and '67 Championships! 🤠 🏆 🏁
You are the SHIFTMASTER!
Best 'Vette body style ever made! Lucky Bastard! :D
As a fellow owner of a 66 with a 327, I approve of the hooning!
Dang.. so nice.. Thanks for posting.. Made my day.
Thanks for watching!
Pretty neat seeing you hammer on those two. Congrats on the 10k subs!
Thanks!
The 327 and the 427 are really different types of cars. The 327 was largely meant for road racing better balanced better handling not front heavy. However many folks prefer drag racing instant gratification just need a quarter mile of straight to settle it. The American way. That's the 427's job.
The 365 hp fi 327 made 427 sweat real hard nasty 7500 rpm sbc fi wicked solid lifter fi moter
Amazing how fast cars have come ' A stock 5.0 Mustang now runs low 12's stock with AC , life is Good 👍
For sure newer cars are much faster and better to drive. But shhhhhhh! Saying that really hurts some of these guys feelings!
Awesome cars!
Those were the fun days before the all the tech.
More fun than is legal. 66 Ray with 6-71 dual Carter's, red of course, sold it when I turned 70, think it will out live me.
Big block baby! 3 deuces too....nice!
My late Dad bought a brand new triple black 66' coupe and paid $4200. It was a 327/350-4spd-3.36 he ran a 14.2@100 mph at Detroit Dragway in 1966, so your car is pretty close to spot on👍👍
Sounds like an incredible memory, and a beautiful car.
BTW triple black refers to a conv with black interior, soft top and body color.
@@mattrohr1266 yeah I misspoke there, not triple black unless my late Dad was referring to the paint but IIRC it's called Tuxedo black.
My C2 starter has a clip/bracket on it that bolts from the starter to the block . Very common part on them . G M part issued ...
The L79 had no chance as mine will turn 6500 all day with a set of points still in the factory distributor.. The loss of 1000 + rpms and the amount of rubber put down / loss of time on the second run pretty much made it a mismatch. However I did enjoy your efforts and watching you young fellas enjoying the cars I street raced as a kid. My L79 I had in high school, bought it for $2500. back in 1972 with 30K miles on it.. It would eat as many big blocks as it lost to. I still drive it today along with many other toys I have collected over the years... Keep doing what you are doing........
My 65 Roadster L79 was bought in 73 for 3150.
I won more races than I lost.
She sits patiently in my garage
👍☮️
I will say being clever w/the lever is NOT lacking here.
I bought a G-Tech Performance meter back in the 90s and it does the same thing. Very accurate
65 and 66 were the best two years.
67 fastback427 big block with tripower and sidepipes was second only to the 2019 ZR1 who is King❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
best Corvett
"Whip something out and get it up by tonight"...😅😅😅
😂
Green Vette is Badass!
It’s a cool car for sure!
Crazy how the Big Block car hooked so much better..
I've never thought the 97-02 Camaros were very big, but next to that vette it looks huge
One of my Grails is a '65 327 4 speed coupe. A great driver came up last year for 55K, didn;t move fast enough to snag it.EDIT
1965 has little louvers behind the door windows on the B pillars
very good shift work my man
Great shifting man. :)
Nice driving!
Good work on the Hurst shifter
Thanks!
I have owned my L68/1967 for 52 years now. I have been 100 miles an hour twice in that time, and that was enough for me. My last set of bias ply tires were over 40 years old, high tread but old!
I pay well attention to tire dates! Anything over 10 years old I don't like running. Espically the way we drive things around here! Old tires can make a great car drive bad! Also, with corvettes an old tire can ruin a quarter pretty easily by blowing out!
Love a C2 Vette!!
Very nice. I had a 66 w 454 LS6 11:1 compression, Holley 850 DBPPM. A MOPAR yes MOPAR hemi9 4 speed.
