In my 50+ years with a professional driver's license I encountered waaaay too many nitwits behind a steering wheel. I don't like them, don't like the idea of them, don't look forward to sharing the highway with them, but the oncoming "Autonomous Cars" will probably be the best thing to happen to a large percentage of the brain-dead portion of the driving public. I drove for 10-12 hours per night for the last 10 years and nearly every night someone made some unbelievably careless outmaneuver and either hit something or someone or just scared the crap out of whomever was nearest! Your opinion of that portion of the driving public is actually rather kind... at least compared to the opinions of the drivers I've worked with.

Chris is by far my favourite thing about new TG, no nonsense, knows his shit and am actual racing driver. He's 100% right about all these cars especially the crossovers, too big but small at same time. Just get a hatchback or estate, save money on fuel because less weight and actually safer than SUVs and crossovers
Top Gear with the fab trio was not a just a motoring tv show. It was a multi-level entertaining show. Clarkson, May and Hammond are top notch journalist, tv/radio host and could entertain the whole world talking about everything. Chris Harris, to me, is a true high level car show host. Without the fab trio, Top Gear has become a car show. That doesn't mean it got worse; it's just another kind of show. If you bear this in mind, you can enjoy the new Top Gear without complaining about the hosts. Chris Harris is definitely one of the best bloke around you can pick for hosting the show. I'm happy for him. He deserves it!

Ash Q true! Three years ago I bought an m135i ( although manual ) for £19500 with 10k on the clock. Unbelievable £ for the performance. Interior as dull as hell but for 320bhp and a remap if you choose up to 380bhp it’s a steal

My Honda Civic 1.8 petrol has done 221,000 miles, only broken down twice when the clutch went and a couple of battery failures, engine still going strong and I’m on original exhaust
I have a SEAT Leon FR and it’s brilliant, may not be as smooth as a golf due to stiffer suspension but the looks are better 100% and still manages to drive extremely well
Excellent review, Mr. Harris. I run a 2017 Volvo XC90 T6 R-Design 2.0 L Drive-E twincharged I4 over here in the USA and find the performance more than enough for everyday use (for reference, previous car was a GT350). All round, I cannot fault it for day-to-day use and 1k+ mile round journeys; it’s almost perfect. That said, the diesel option isn’t available over here so I guess that’s where your issue takes place with the V90 estate powertrain? I’ve not driven the diesel so can’t comment, however I’d be willing to bet that the 2.0 twincharged I4 motor in the V90 would adjust your perception somewhat?
Just have to say when I was 14 I used to buy autocar translated from original into our language. I was just looking forward the whole week to read from Chris. And the first page I went was the page with 2 columns where was Chris Harris. This guy has a passion about cars and just reading his columns I was able to imagine I am driving the car and his story was always so strong. True petrolhead CHris. I live in a country full of bumpy roads, awfull streets and when rains ...the streets becomes rivers...so my Tucson CRDI do the job quite good. And if you want some fun...It will get you to 120 miles/h. very easily.

Anyone thinking of the Tiguan or a Ford Kuga really needs to take a look at the estates. Small SUVs are worse in every way than saloons/estates in the same price range. In fact I'd rather have a large hatchback like the Mondeo than something like the Tiguan/Mokka/Kuga
For the people that buy those cars it doesn't matter. The first consideration they give towards a new car is how high up you sit, that's why all these manufacturers are making small SUVs. Most people don't buy a car (unfortunately) based on how good it is, they buy it because they either like the brand, the color, or the ride height.

I can get a bicycle instead of a Toyota, but I won't enjoy it. Buy cars which are fun and make you happy. If you just want mode of transportation then yes, get a Toyota, but you wouldn't be watching car shows if you preferred a Camry over an M3 would you?
@@byronrideaux Well I do but my C270 has 300k kilometers on it and it runs without a hitch. Most older Mercs in West/South Europe are 20+ years old and have well over 200k kilometers on them. Still run well. Newer cars are less reliable across the spectrum, not just Merc. I don't get why people bash German cars only when all cars, even Toyota and Mazda, are less reliable now than they were a decade or more ago.
“Cheap and you get a VW badge and it’s quite a good car” - is it the VW badge that makes it a good car because I can’t see any reason why it’s any better than the Aygo, or a Suzuki Ignis. Annnnnnnd, why buy a golf. This wasn’t justified either. I feel people just automatically think VW is good, just because of the brand name... Very biased.
Why buy a Golf? Because it's a car that punches above it's weight in terms of build quality and overall refinement, they drive quite well and they look reasonably good, and they are good value. There are other cars in the segment that may do certain things slightly better, but the Golf is the one that covers all the bases the best. You can't be faulted for buying something else, but you can never go wrong with the Golf, it sets the standard for the segment much like a Mercedes S-Class sets the standard for full-size luxo barges.
Ayrton Mutagaana but what about the focus. What about the i30, what about the new corolla. I bet all 3 of those (maybe not the focus although the one we had for 11 years lasted incredibly well with NO faults whatsoever). A golf may have been good once but not anymore. The other thing I don’t get is how VW has kept their customer base after all their lies. There isn’t many companies that could manage that but I guess it’s the same with Apple, whatever they do, they are praised for, as people will just go to them without thinking as someone automatically assumes just because it’s a VW it’s good.

They are expensive. Not really the best value. Better to spend money on tuning an E46 as it is the same size, but more stable.

I can get a bicycle instead of a Toyota, but I won't enjoy it. Buy cars which are fun and make you happy. If you just want mode of transportation then yes, get a Toyota, but you wouldn't be watching car shows if you preferred a Camry over an M3 would you?

@@byronrideaux Well I do but my C270 has 300k kilometers on it and it runs without a hitch. Most older Mercs in West/South Europe are 20+ years old and have well over 200k kilometers on them. Still run well. Newer cars are less reliable across the spectrum, not just Merc. I don't get why people bash German cars only when all cars, even Toyota and Mazda, are less reliable now than they were a decade or more ago.

“Cheap and you get a VW badge and it’s quite a good car” - is it the VW badge that makes it a good car because I can’t see any reason why it’s any better than the Aygo, or a Suzuki Ignis.
Annnnnnnd, why buy a golf. This wasn’t justified either. I feel people just automatically think VW is good, just because of the brand name... Very biased.
Why buy a Golf? Because it's a car that punches above it's weight in terms of build quality and overall refinement, they drive quite well and they look reasonably good, and they are good value. There are other cars in the segment that may do certain things slightly better, but the Golf is the one that covers all the bases the best. You can't be faulted for buying something else, but you can never go wrong with the Golf, it sets the standard for the segment much like a Mercedes S-Class sets the standard for full-size luxo barges.

Ayrton Mutagaana but what about the focus. What about the i30, what about the new corolla. I bet all 3 of those (maybe not the focus although the one we had for 11 years lasted incredibly well with NO faults whatsoever). A golf may have been good once but not anymore. The other thing I don’t get is how VW has kept their customer base after all their lies. There isn’t many companies that could manage that but I guess it’s the same with Apple, whatever they do, they are praised for, as people will just go to them without thinking as someone automatically assumes just because it’s a VW it’s good.
I keep hearing about build quality yada yada yada. Ive gotta say golfs are not fun to drive. They are boring cars. Of course the people at top gear woukd know thisbif they looked at any other golf except the GTI but nah, to lazy
