- Wild Kingdom, sometimes known as Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, is an American television show that features wildlife and nature. It was originally produced from 1963 until 1988, and was revived in 2002. The show's second incarnation currently airs on Animal Planet in the U.S.
"While Jim wrestles the vicious crocodile, I'll watch from my tent in the distance with high powered binoculars and a pitcher of banana daiquiris."
Dude...
Got that right.
Mutual Of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom" was a brilliant program during the heydays of the 1970's. I remember the show on Saturdays and Sundays as a young kid. A Brilliant 6!! Long Live Marlin Perkins!! Educational for everyone at home to see on television.
Musically speaking, Wild Kingdom has one of the best themes in all the land. It's right up there with "Route 66." Both make use of descending streams of perfect 4ths.
The French Horns and Strings are beautiful the Congo..... perfect.
absolutely!!
Such wonderful times from my youth as a young boy. I loved this program.
Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom was a Sunday night institution that ran on NBC-TV from 1963 until 1972. Then after NBC canceled the series,it ran continously in syndication from 1972 until 1988,and was most recently revised in 2002 and 2008 for Animal Planet. Sunday nights on NBC during the mid-1960's and 1970's consisted on "Wild Kingdom","The Wonderful World of Disney",and "Hanna-Barbera's Huckleberry Finn",not to mention "Bonanza" after a good Sunday dinner. Life was simple and easy back then.
Sunday Nights on NBC growing up: GE College Bowl, Hanna-Barbera's Huckleberry Finn, Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom & The Wonderful World Of Disney. All after a good Sunday family dinner. Enough to make a grown man cry. Life will never be that simple again.
This was my first introduction to the wonders of the natural world, I adored this show!
One of the best TV theme songs ever written.
Watched the show with my dad for many years. I used to like to watch Jim Fowler's appearances on the Johnny Carson show (where he brought in several wild animals to get the classic Carson reaction, which was always hilarious).
Can you believe that Stan Brock lives in my hometown now ? How much luckier could a kid from the 70s get ? He was the coolest ! :)
Yes indeed! Memories. This show made our Sunday afternoons so special.
Yeah, Miss The old Sunday evening Nature Shows. After that, Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color on NBC
Thanks for posting this. Instant regression to 5 years old in front of the TV on Sunday nights before school, heh.
Amazing how much a part of my life this was as a kid. After this, Lawrence Welk, and then Wonderful World of Disney. But for Pete's sake I cannot find an audio of the song, "Mutual of Omaha is people, you can count on when the going's rough." I can still hear the song in my head as clear as day.
Gerald Wilkerson Yeah!! HOW did THAT version of those commercials, from the '70s, not make it onto RUclips? lol Same with the Amtrak commercials from the same era,, scored to the tune of "Iiii've been working on the raaaailroad..." LOL the crap I remember amazes me sometimes...
So funny. I often come to RUclips to share a video for my Facebook comments. I just googled "Mutual of Omaha is people, you can count on when the going's rough." so I could post that ditty because it's going through my head and see your comment. First thing that comes to my mind too. I loved this show and Lawrence Welk and Wonderful World of Disney!
Gerald Wilkerson i was hoping to hear that bit too. with any luck someone will post it
exact same line up, and the muppet show too**

I was about 2-3yrs old when i was watching this in Nashville, TN. Awesome memories...of what I could remember at that age :-)
Thanks for posting; brings back long forgotten pleasant memories 4 this so 2 be 45 yo man.
Yeah, Mr. Gerald Wilkerson, that's exactly what I'm looking for too. I have a vivid memory of that commercial and song and really want to hear it again.
I LOVED this show!!!! So exciting!!!
How good theme music once was. Nostalgia.
I love this theme song.
I loved watching this show.
@DJKhrome : as you said: enogh to make a grown man cry - music @ 0:54
One of the most beautiful themes I've EVER heard!
Wow!!! I miss this show sos much!!!! It was a great show......I guess I am getting old...
That title music just gave me a major aural flashback---I immediately recalled it ; a wistful voice from the past. Thanks !!!
Sunday Nights - Mutual of Omaha, Wonderful World of Disney, 60 Minutes, & then the NBC Sunday Night Mystery Movie time to go to bed.
Wish there was a long version of the song, it's beautiful.
@rushguy515 I agree! I loved being a kid in the 70s too! Sunday nights now are just not what they were back then.
The Sunday evening memories
Mutual of OMAHA is PEOPLE...you can count on when the goin's rough. :)
I was glue every Sunday to the tv to watch this.
I use to watch this when I was little, I was just going to say I think it was on Sunday nights them I see the 1st poster already said it, then their was The Wonderful World of Disney also on Sunday nights I think.
Yes this reminds me of my childhood great times
Loved this show and the intro - broadcast as "Im Reich der wilden Tiere" in Germany throughout the 70s and 80s
Just yesterday somebody informed me that they found the music I was looking for. It's actually not from MOWK, but from a Canadian program called "Untamed World". You can find the opening and closing theme music on youtube. I remembered only the very end of the closing theme music. If you didn't watch this program back then you won't feel nostalgic to you, but I recommend that you listen to the theme music anyhow, which is really fantastic.
YES!!! ruclips.net/video/YKFe59LC8a0/видео.html
Kinda makes me sad in a way. When the show started that meant that I had to go back home to my abusive step father. But I loved the show if I could talk my Dad into letting me stay a bit longer to watch it.
I was at work and the memory of seeing the older gentleman in the blue suite on tv popped up out off memory fil r s. Then it too me 5 minutes to remember the name. I believe it was on Sunday night. 🖤💀👍✌🦇🖤
"Just as the elephant faces unexpected danger in the wild, you and your family face dangers just as unexpected where you are. MUTUAL OF OMAHA can help ease your worries with an insurance plan that's right for YOU......"
OMG...the music @ 0:54 :-O
This melody is in my head for 35 years now.... I've searched for it for YEARS. In Germany it was called "Im Reich der wilden Tiere" ( = Kingdom of wild animals), but I didn't know the original titel. It was such an indescribable moment when I found the vid and could hear that music after so many years...
Great show! There's a revision of any bloody shit on TV....why not THIS? :-(
Thx for posting ^^
I know what you mean. The theme your'e probably referring to sounds like something Neil Richardson might have composed; heavy on brass, strings, the "groovy" guitar smacking riff, and reverb.
WVUDrummergirl Wild wild world of animals?
A few weeks ago somebody send me the answer. The program I remembered wasn't actually MOWK at all, but instead it was a Canadian nature program called "Untamed World". I remembered only the very end of the closing theme music.
If you didn't watch this program back then you won't feel nostalgic about the theme music, but I would recommend anyone to listen to it anyhow because it's really fantastic. Just search for "Untamed World", "intro" and "outro".
so beautiful!!
Thanks Jon, but that's not the one. The theme I'm referring to is more uptempo; I wish I could explain it better. They used it in the closing. The one you posted is the only one I've found on RUclips...
Help Needed:
I watched this show in the '70's. I guess my memory is fading, because I remember different theme music, maybe for the closing credits rather than the opening. It was African, several drums playing at the same time and a simple flute sound like blowing over a bottle. Really memorable, and I'd like to hear it again. I thought it was from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, but the theme music on RUclips, both opening and closing themes are not what I remember. Please help me find it!
jonfklein Wild Wild world of animals.
@rayssonation I forgot about "Bonanza", but by then it was almost bedtime for us school-aged kids.......
memorie's. when. I. was. a. kid. time. goes. by
I grew up with the mid-'80s theme...which pretty much rocked IMO.
But I think Wild Kingdom was still in reruns as late as 1993, though back in the day it defined Sunday nights long before 60 Minutes, America's Funniest Home Videos, The Simpsons, Game Of Thrones, Sunday Night Football, and The Walking Dead would own it.
@tsntana HAHAHAHAHA...YES! When I think of Wild Kingdom, that is the first thing that comes to mind!
Today's version, since 2.020, has a lion logo, and their slogan, "Defend Your Kingdom".
What about the disclaimer? Wasn't it something like, "All scenes in this program, whether actual or created, depict authenticated facts"?
While Jim lasso's the female Rhino ( in heat ), I'll be watching with high powered binoculars from the armored car !... ... From Marlins personal diary...
jonfklein, that is the music I remember, too, with the silhouette images that broke into vertical lines which shifted over. It has been bothering me for years that I cannot find it.
Has any actor had a more gravelling, tough guy voice than Robert Conrad? I remember him doing a nature show standing on a beach narrating, and thinking that his voice, along with Leonard Nimoy's, Charleton Heston's and James Earle Jones'' were the best narrative voices ever. Which one do you think had the best voice to play God in a movie?
@DJKhrome I know what you mean. I wouldn't trade having been a kid in the 70s for anything. It seems like the last decade before the world got really big. Ah innocence lost. How I miss it.
Good clean entertainment back then. The filth out there today makes me sad.
Yeah, loved that(LOL)!!!
This theme song sounds a lot like Mancini.
MIGRATE TO MY GREAT
I know the one you mean- I came here looking for that one- it was played on a marimba or something- I thought it was this show. Anyone know what it was?
When this country had values.
back when if a man wanted to stick his dick in another man, they had to do it in secret and live in constant fear of being ostracized by society. brings a tear to these old eyes :')
ahh I found it! It was an entirely different show! "Untamed World". I tried putting a link in this but it wouldn't post, it's on RUclips- just put this after the youtubedotcom bit: /watch?v=vkTXlsSnZfE
😀👍✔️✳️
