I live in Harbor Springs and the tree sale that EMMET CONSERVATION DISTRICT puts on in the spring and fall is great and the workshop they put on when picking up the trees is great info for growing things in this northern world. We started a 50' x 50' garden and the learning curve was steep (lost two of the 4 trees planted the first year).

The pole barn construction seems like a top priority especially if you build it large enough to 'open up' the boat so you have access to everything on on the boat.

Love the idea of a boat barn. I live off grid on 5 acres with a small farm house. I have a 28 foot sailboat on a trailer and plan to build a shed for it. I'm in S.E. Texas about 1 hour north of the coast. My thought is the historical records show no major storm has ever made it this far inland. Hopefully I will be ok here. I'm doing the very thing you are doing. Planting a food forest, growing as much veg and fruit as possible. I have chickens and bees & hope to one day have a few sheep.
I have been south all the way to S.A. so I'm happy to coastal cruise and fish close to home and maybe a little further on occasion. Your plan sounds great. I'm solo, so if I can do this the two of you certainly can. Good luck on the new adventure. 🧭
    Cheers S/V Cork~Texas 🇺🇸 ⛵

We bought our property, put in power septic and well. Moved a mobile home on it and put in an orchard. Two years is what that took, I wasn’t paying attention and did not prune the trees I. The shape most conducive to fruit bearing. The trees have done great and we’re one of the best investments we ever made. Fast fed, 35 years we are retired, in a newer house and loving our lifestyle. Wife never liked water boats or anything associated with them. I had power boats, sail boats and fishing boats. Now all done with that stuff (disabled) and retirement is great.
I expect you will love your orchard for many years as well as sailing and kids. Keep up the very interesting videos please, you are wonderful!

When you are new to sailing, stay out of the cabin, look at the horizon. It helps train the mind, well that's my theory.
When tacking, the convention is for the helmsperson to say: 'Ready about' then the crew confirm 'Ready' a few monents later you push the tiller or turn the wheel 'Lee Ho'. Lee stands for Leeward. It depends alot on the situation, and size of boat. If you are racing on a bigger boat and a genoa to guide around so multiple crew to get into position, there will be more planning than a smail boat tacking up a channel.

With a green house you can protect all of your food from deer, rabbits. I've seen folks build these wooden boxes, lined with plastic with holes in the plastic so it drains properly, filled with rich soil, about 18" deep, built at waist height. No bending over to harvest beans, melons, cucumbers, peppers, etc. When do we get started. Of course Renata will need her own tools! Such a cute little girl!

It was good to see you guys out sailing. That was the main reason I started supporting your channel. The combo of sailing and real life video pros making a RUclips channel was what hooked me. I don’t have a lot of time to watch other stuff and thought I might lose interest as I knew how much a baby would change your lives. I was hoping you’d end up living on a cat and remaining on the water for the most part after Renata got big enough. However, life is what it is. I’m still hanging in there. Personally, I’d rather see more content on how you do your video productions than perma-culture. But I’ll continue watching and supporting your channel because I think you guys make really high quality videos no matter what you are doing!

Boatsetter seems more like Turo. I've suggested that Turo set up a way to rent/rent out all of the boat trailers sitting at marinas all over the country...for example, I have a friend who bought a 30' pontoon boat that he keeps in a boat slip at the marina. He bought the boat w/o a trailer. He needed a trailer to get the boat to a mechanic's shop, found a trailer to borrow, he has no permanent need for a trailer nor a place to keep a trailer. There are lots of boat trailers at the marina people aren't using but paying rent to the marina... the trailers just fill up what would be needed parking spaces.

There is no better felling having the capability to create a robust food storage. We not only grow a lot of produce, but we take advantage of food that goes on sale. There are many sailing channels to choose from, with the 'sailing' content as the initial draw. Over time, however, the viewer has to decide if the people presenting the content are worthy of the time /effort. In your case, you have created a compelling, interesting, entertaining, wholesome packet of content that is all the more interesting because you guys are at the center. So, by all means build that pole barn, repair the floor in the bathroom, plant those trees - we will all be watching with interest because you guys are at the epicenter.

The pole barn concept will be a good option for your boat house/ barn requirements. Suggest that you perform a site investigation with options for the location on your property though to confirm the subsoil conditions for the pole foundations especially in regards to the possible rock layer elevations below. Northern Michigan/ the UP area can have shallow rock layers. A post hole auger on a skid steer or bobcat would assist this this investigation before you’re locked into fixed location on your property.
Have you considered planting highshrub blueberry’s along with the fruit trees you’re proposing? They are hardy enough for Michigan winters and will produce a yield after only 2-3 years vs. 5-10 years for most fruit trees. Also consider cherry, plum & pear trees as they also are hardy enough for a Michigan winter.
Fair winds and good luck with your summer projects.

    • @stevearcher2352
      @stevearcher2352 Год назад +1

One last thought regarding the pole barn….consider utilizing the precast concrete post foundation vs. the post embedded in the ground. It’s the more contemporary method which allows for the frost/ freeze depth and eliminates the potential for wood rotting. The concrete is similarly embedded in an auger cast hole with the precast concrete extending above grade with galvanized connection plates to interface with the pole barn posts. This could make your rigging of the posts a bit more efficient.

Thank you for that amazing trip down memory lane for me. San Diego is where I learned to sail, and you took the same route I often took (including Coronado for lunch). Seems nothing has changed. Now I'm in Boston, pining to continue the dream. So great to follow your adventures!

Yes, love to see all of it. Been following/subscriber since before you bought the first boat, also Michigan native, and actually just down the road in Fife Lake area. Great to see the family doing well, and thanks for sharing 👍👊🇺🇸🤘

Great real time update. Always love seeing what you three are up to.
Glad to hear you intend on spending more time on the Great Lakes. Maybe run into you guys sometime around White Lake on Lake Michigan

If you guys get up to the San Francisco, Bay or the Delta, I'd sure like to shake your hands and see this young Renata of yours. Remember I live in the heart of the Delta..Rio Vista, CA I'm excited to see you guys again. And thank you for sharing your experiences sailing.
