Our NEXT BOAT Solves All our Problems with Cruising | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 112

  • What kind of boat we’ve been secretly dreaming about for the last 3+ years?
    Living, traveling and working on our monohull gave us a lot of insight into what we did and did not like about our first boat and our cruising lifestyle. Because we value spending time with our families in the Midwest, we have fallen into a seasonal cruising pattern, which means our boat had been on the hard, in the path of hurricanes for several months every year. This got us thinking:
    There must be a better way
    After a zillion hours of research and countless pros & cons discussions, we’ve figured out the perfect set of criteria for our next boat. We lay it all out for you in this episode!
    Hope you enjoy!!

    OMG!!! I've never posted before, but I've been following you from the beginning & this was the last thing I expected you to consider! I'm the proud owner of one of the first F31's made, hull #6, originally made in 1992 by Ostac in Brisbane, before Ian worked with Corsair & brought the molds to the USA. I've had her since 2000. She travels the waters of Long Island Sound, but has made it to Marathon several years back for a couple of weeks, something I'd love to repeat when I have a LOT more time. There are many pro's and con's to consider. I keep it in my driveway off season & can unfold it there & do all maintenance at home. It's an absolute blast to sail, but cruising on it compared to Soulianis would be like going from a Winnebago to a pop-top trailer. Also the motion of a light multihull (Cat or tri) through the water is quite different from a heavy monohull, just something to consider. All boats require a compromise, you pick what works for you. If you ever want more info from a long-term owner of one feel free to contact me. Best wishes!

    Great Posting kids! I just knew you couldn't be boatless for very long, it's in your genes now! I'm remembering when "Tula's Endless Summer" had the use of that tri-maran for several months and how much fun it was for them. Of course there are only two of them and space down below was limited at best. Yours would for sure have to have a larger main hull, but I'm sure your Sprinter Van could tow it without any issues. So looking forward to what you end up with! On a sadder note, the new owner of your Soulianis must just be heartbroken after Ian blew through! My sympathy goes out to them And you.

    "We are rushing from one attempt to slow down to another" My gf and I can totally relate. We have been commuting 45+ miles a day each way to work from our rental in the CA foothills... well "toehills" really. This lifestyle has taken its toll. We like the simple life of work, home, togetherness, hiking in the Sierra, biking, and traveling, and I am a skier and climber. BUT it's been tough with the commuting sucking up so much of our resources. So we just found a little place in town (Grass Valley) where we will be 10 minutes from our jobs, and a bike ride or walk to town for events and shopping or whatever. PLUS it has a two-car garage so I finally get to have my shop. I am renovating a trailer, and would like to ultimately create a custom trailer-building/ tiny house business. BTW, I'm so glad you mentioned the San Juan Islands. We love it up there, and if we could move to Bellingham WA, we would in a second. Amazing mountains and the maritime life. What could be better!

    We noticed you went out sailing with Billy and Sierra on their 880 in Marathon a few hours after we did. Great boat, a ton of fun and great company to sail with! We’ve owned numerous catamarans over the past 30 years and I think I realized I may be to old for the trailerable trimaran......a problem y’all don’t have!

    I like it... I call mine an "RV that floats". I have a 1976 Ericson 35-2, built a goose neck trailer to accomplish the land travel, and bought a 1990 International 8100 off Craigslist to pull it. With a big winch on the back of the truck and a 4th axle on the landing gear of the trailer, I can launch from any boat ramp. My wife and I have taken our boat from Colorado to Washington and cruised the inside passage twice, (almost to Alaska).

    Any foldable tri that you get will be only an interim solution as it will be primarily for protected waters. Cruising the Caribbean, the Bahamas and anywhere offshore will require a larger cat or tri. So you will need to be selling any foldable tri you get for something larger. The foldable tri will be going smaller than the Tartan and will be cramped with 3, and more cramped if you have another child. You indicated you like to see family and folding tri would allow you to trailer to their area, however they will not be able to stay onboard for a cruise longer than a day. A 38-39' cruising cat would allow them to visit you in more exotic locations like the Bahamas or Caribbean and it could spend hurricane season in safe locations with you on it. Just my 2 cents.

    • @kevinfisher1345
      @kevinfisher1345 Год назад +4

      You do not seem to be getting the concept of being able to see family. They will be traveling to see family on a regular basis all the time, not going to take them out on long cruises. Having family come visit in the Carribean one weekend or one week every so many years is again not the point of being able to see family on a regular basis. So you are missing their whole point.
      There are also foldable tri that are blue water / ocean cruising. So not sure where you get that mistaken believe they will only be for protected waters. Not sure how many of those are trailerable though. But I am sure you could find a trailerable island hopper / coastal cruiser tri. I have a feeling they already have one in real time.

    • @douglasrobbie9998
      @douglasrobbie9998 Год назад

      @@kevinfisher1345 It is the combinations of a trailerable trimaran that I was addressing. I agree there are offshore trimarans that are foldable like the Rapido 50, but they will not fold to the 8-10' max width that can be trailerable on roadways. So 30' like Corsair is probably the longest production folding tri that can be trailerable and that will have smaller internal space than their Tartan. I'm sure some people would sail a Corsair around the Caribbean but probably not the best for a family with a baby. The other point was that it was an interim step, yes , people do buy and sell boats, go up and sometimes down in size, but in normal sailboat markets, the buying and selling process costs $$$s and boats depreciate in value. That said, family ties and connections are important and strong and if that is top on the list, so be it, get a folding tri.

    • @kevinfisher1345
      @kevinfisher1345 Год назад +1

      @@douglasrobbie9998 Yes trailerable will be key and hard to find. A lot depends upon on what all someone will want to trailer. I agree as you said most will only want, or can only trailer 8-11' width.

    Rushing from one slowdown attempt to another? You need to discover the doldrums! But I don't think that is in your makeup, at least until you're at anchor again with no good weather window for weeks. So, the answer is a new boat and back to cruising. Then you will settle down to a casual lifestyle, at least when the wind is below 15 knots and the sea is not as confused as you may think you are at the time of this episode.. :¬) Webhead USA

    I am gonna play devils advocate.
    A huge consideration in a big trailerable boat is what type of vehicle you will need to haul it.
    Big diesel, big fuel bills, big maintenance.
    Also, where will you store the truck and trailer when you are sailing?

    I've heard that multihulls can be worse for seasickness, because there are two main axes of instability, as opposed to one main axis on a monohull. I hope y'all address that issue at some point.

    Well to bad we were never in Turkey Creek at the same time. The yellow cat 2 canals over is mine and I sold my F27 there this winter. I've been sailing multihulls for over 40 yrs. Trailering has it's drawbacks as well.

    I was hoping that you had already chosen your new boat. I wish you the best of luck. Oh give that darling daughter of yours a kiss and hug from a 75yo great grandfather.
    Bye for now. 🤗

    I have been thinking along the same lines as you considering selling my 30 ft schionning cat for a trainable trimaran. I can’t wait to see what you decide.

    Did it make it through the storm? The river had over 10 feet of water rise. My boat was in La Belle on the hard and it laid over. Labelle had 125mph winds. I lost my Beneteau on FMB. Keep the dream going.

    Could also look at the Hake Seaward 32 large for it size and trailerable, folding mast and hydraulic keel.

      Narrow beam for its length. Maybe a seasickness problem.

    I would have to design a fencing system for it that folds down as well.

    OK. This is a bit more than freaking me out. Just started watching this; knowing Soulianis was knocked around & found amongst a heap of mixed boat debris after Hurricane Ian overran Florida. (At least she was still afloat.)

    It is bitter sweet to let a pride enjoy go. But we do move on. HOWEVER! The new owner will have 100% proof of all the amazing work you did via your great videos you have made.

    Multi-hulls are "Soul"-less but a fast, trailerable tri would be a ton of fun.

    There is a mile of pro's and con's for each type of boat. The only really big thing, is what suits YOU... There are fold-able ocean tri's. There are blow up shove in the boot tri's, and everything in between... A fast tri could be sailed up or down from the lakes to the Caribbean and save yourself a 5 day drive each way... It's all about what suits you...

    Ripido offers a foldable 50 and 40 foot tri. The new dragonfly 40’s are nice, but personally I don’t like an open rear cockpit. The older version of the dragonfly 40 know as the 1200 I always loves being a center cockpit with a rear cabin.

      We’re excited to see the Rapido trimarans make their way into the market. They’re a bit on the larger and more $$$ side of the equation for our purposes over the next few years. But cool boats all the same!

    Sailing requires effort in planning, prep, maintenance, and finally, sailing. The first 3 are foundational to go sailing. Great Lakes sailing means 4-6 month season at most, and the beginning of the season is freezing cold still. Focusing on sailing, and reducing all the other areas of effort to as close to zero, is a wise move, when you have many demands on time. The which boat discussion, lacks the context of life in general. Having sailed Georgian Bay a bit, I think a shallow draft folding trimaran, is a sensible modern approach to sailing that area.

    a trimeran has NO BALLAST......is not self righting and a 'capsize' is not nice.....also be sure to fully rig before buying as it's quite the adventure.......it's a brilliant IDEA, and I 'get' the why it's and idea......best wishes, love the channell
