What have we sailors been up to on land this last year? We've got quite the start to our permaculture food forest -- have a look! Last year we started with a field of grass and weeds. Seven fruit trees, 135 plants, and 15 pounds of seed later, we’ve got THIS. Forgot to mention all the sweat and sore muscles, but if you can’t count it, does it count? 😜 For all you hardcore boaters, we'll be diving back into boat work in our next episode.
Hope you enjoy!

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy your divergence from the sailing story. That said, I'm highly impressed with this video. You're obviously talented story tellers and it doesn't matter what the subject matter is, you present it beautifully. I'm hooked, I'll keep watching.
The world needs more people like you. Have enjoyed many of your sailing videos but I must say this one topped them all. As another commenter said, you've enriched my life by sharing your life.
Thanks for the wholesome content. I can't help but smile when watching the three of you.
Loved the report by the Pruning Officer, asking the trees if they needed pruning. 😂
I absolutely love what you are doing with your land! Watching the area transform into a food forest over the coming years will be more than worth the work you're putting in now. You're setting such a great example for Renata and all those who watch your videos. :)
Wow guys! I had tears in my eyes watching this. What an absolutely beautiful legacy you are leaving your daughter and the generations that follow her. Not just in terms of the land and plants but the illustration of your love for her and each other and a guide for them on how to be a family. I have a similar small acre lot in the country here in Australia. I have planted trees which will not mature until long after I am gone, but I hope my future grandchildren and great grandchildren get to enjoy their peaceful shade. Love your videos and watching you grow as a family.
You are fun to watch - success and setbacks - thank you for opening up your lives in such entertaining and informative ways. Good luck with this segment of your adventure.
Wow! Your production quality is spot on. Good story telling. You've expanded your niche at the same time. Love it!
Glad you liked it! 👍
Thank GOD for life....and all it's splendors!
Now that is a Soulianis video! Very inspirational! I’m ready to go out in the backyard and begin digging and planting.😂 You guys are simply the best. When you sold the big boat I commented that I would watch any content you chose to upload. Videos like this are the reason for that statement.
I too Dream of having a food forest!!! Yours is doing way better than mine!!
Again you have nailed it, my Mom and Dad did exactly what you have done on 15 acres of land in Sarnia, Ontario in the early 50s…
Your presentation and positive attitude, the smiles, and the inclusiveness of each other will be fond memories for you and your little family… as you both have brought happy and fond memories back to me… Thank you… John…❤
I was impressed when Sam Holmes passed on the AG supplement sponsorship
May 8th is a great day. I married my wife on her birthday. 52 YEAR AGO. Have fun. I love the water and my wife loves the land. So we had a boat and we RV. Now move to Florida and we love it here.
New channel name: Homesteading Soulianis. I like this as much as sailing.
You are creating the life that Len has always wanted to live; a sustainable permaculture food forest. Simply beautiful, and so, so happy for your growing family💙❤️❤️
On a boat grow sprouts like alfalfa. Easy to grow in a jar with just water and no soil. Take bags of seeds and grow as you need.
You guys are awesome! On the water, on the farm, whatever. I haven't been to MI since 07. I would love to see TC if you guys are down there and filming. Cherry Festival, sailing on Grand Traverse Bay, etc. Just a note for future content. Cheers.
Your property looks like a lovely spot for your family, your boat, and for your future plans. Good job on the tree fences. They will work well to protect the trees from the deer.
Congrats, that's the most wholesome seen I've seen all day. Bravo.
Thank you for sharing your amazing experiences with the world. You inspire me to reach higher to attain my goals and dreams. Your precious daughter makes me smile and giggle which is the topper to all of your videos. God bless you and your beloved family and loved ones.💗🙏🏻
Gezzz...what a videographic 'keep sake' for Renata and her future sibling(s) - WELL...DONE! About y'alls permaculture gardening efforts - compost...compost...COMPOST. You can NEVER have enough compost. Enjoyed the video - thank you for sharing. Be well - many blessings! Cheers...
Buy a small wood chipper , not to expensive, and it will be a game changer for making your own mulch , soil , you have endless stuff you can chip up.
Watch Free Range Living. Aussie sailing couple now living on rural property. Good info on starting a veg garden and preserving food.
I was about to write the same.
Cutest ever, tree whisperer, "Hi! Do you need to be pruned?" Love it!
Beyond excellent... you three put a smile on my face, that somedays, is sorely needed. I appreciate the effort and time put into the high quality content, and seeing great souls sharing their lives. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing your lives and your vision. It's very moving and I feel enriched by your story. When winter comes and you've time for a book, please read some of Wendell Berry. You're kindred spirits with him and will find much to cherish in his writing.
Love this it’s all about family time !
Fantastic, well done!!!!! Loved the video and story telling. You guys are rocking this.
Life is an adventure ... Thanks for sharing yours !
just beautiful, gang, great job. God bless. xx 🤗🤗
Back to the land heh, different....makes a change and variety of chores....stay safe
I smiled all the way through the video watching your sweet daughter enjoying her time helping her parents. Y’all are creating great memories for each of you. Great work and great video!
I enjoy watching your RUclips channel and reading some of the comments. One quick note, be careful to not use to much cedar mulch. Cedar & Apple trees do not work together very well. The Cedar mulch should not be used around apple trees. It's acidic in nature, preventing moisture from being lost. As it decomposes, the soil loses its PH, as it adds to the PH. Apples should be handled with a PH of 7.2 to 6.7. Keep up the good work.
Thankyou 😊
It's so nice to see you two again. You've brought your skills from the sea to land. Such a beautiful family.
I look forward to your stories.
Peace.
Theroad to where you want to be will be long, full of heart wrenching failures but if you learn; you will get to where you want to be. Which will be very different than what you thought.
I am beyond happy for you and the future food forest you have created. Wonderful!
Thank you!
Thanks very much
Very interesting. “Till” next time 😎
A delight to watch xxx
Living the dream. Great job, your daughter is going to have an awsome childhood. Great video.🤙
Beautiful and fruitful. Nice
Gorilla carts rock. Will last a lifetime. Oh and the video was ok too 😀
Still the best sailing youtubers, even without a boat. Excellent editing and music.
I enjoyed your video very much. You guys are doing great work!
What a beautiful family I love watching all your videos.
If you guys don't stop being so wholesome, I may have to unsubscribe! Really, congratulations on doing so many positive things, it really gives me
such a positive feeling. Keep it up!
You guys rock! Love how you want to keep the sustainability going no matter what ❤
Very inspiring I like it every bit as much as your sailing videos. May God continue to bless you all.
Thank you very much! 👍
Haskap berries are very popular in Quebec (Camerise in French). They are in season right now and delicious. More tart than a blueberry and full of crazy vitamins. We made jam (no sugar) and then ate it in grilled cheese with Brie and caramelized onions and it was Amazing. I hope you like them, love your ideas!!
Wow sounds amazing 🤤
You’ll be amazed what you can do. I spent 25 years on 12 acres and the best I can recommend is mulch and as much as you can lay down , the difference in soil moisture between mulched and unmulched is staggering. Great idea on the cardboard weed suppressors , I used three of four layers of news print . Pest protection is essential. Get a quad bike and a little trailer, it will make your life a lot easier. Good luck, you’ll never regret the life this is going to give you and your children. Cheers from NZ
Sounds awesome! I hadn’t truly understood the line “planting a tree is the ultimate investment in the future” until we started this food forest. Every time we’re walking around the garden we’re flooded with so many positive inspiring emotions thinking of all that is to come. It’s oddly moving. -K
Wow❤. Love this video!!! That was a lot of hard work but oh so beautiful
Wow that is beautiful
Once again, an amazing video =)
Thank you
Great video! Thanks.
Well done
Just so y'all know, this episode brought a smile to my face more than once. Thanks! (random internet stranger/fan)
Thank you for sharing random internet stranger! It makes us smile knowing we did well. :)
It's good to see the excitement you have in this project. Your little will remember this her whole life. Good on ya.
Wow! Your garden and progress is amazing. Well done. You are such a wonderful little family❤
Wonderful, inspiring video!
Beautiful, inspiring video!❤️❤️❤️
Wow, that's good stuff right there.
That hard work will pay off. Looks great!
Loved this video....
Amazing video!
Hi,
You guys are doing an amazing job. Enjoying your videos!
Nice work!
Good job.
The orchard and gardens look awesome guys!
Thank you!
Brilliant, what a great concept. Hard work but very rewarding and looks like you had some good fun as well. Wonderful, love the vlog :)
What can I say, I'm speechless! Well done you! Love the progress on your food forest! Amazing! By the way, have you thought of growing pumpkins? You've lots of space, and they are prolific, and yummy!
22:42--Great Shot!
I have heard that roses and blackthorn (ick) make good natural barbed wire...
Good Luck with the forest / garden!
You have to plant some grapes and make your own wine! Love the awesome video!
Water and liquid soap, only a small amount and some vinegar( cannot remember ratio).. the soap breaks up the surface tension and makes it coat the leaves, the vinegar is harmless to tress but deters insects. better google it
good luck !!! love watching you guys !! if I was only 75 yrs younger !!!
What a nice video…love your ‘ranchette’ 😉 !
Love your content and been loving following along! We are based on West Michigan and we are planning on Bringing our Sailboat to the Caribbean as of now!
Would love to connect! Your videos have given us a lot of insight on the trip down the river.
This is the good life! One foot on the land, one foot on the sea. I also down sized my sailboat from 58' to 28' trailer sailboat. I only have to drive about an hour from my little farm to the coast. Can keep my sailboat at the farm on the trailer for refit & bottom paint. No yard fees. Best decision ever. God bless you all. 🤗 🌄 ⛵ S/V Cork~Texas 🇺🇸 ⛵
Apple trees. Do you have deer in your area? You will see a lot of deer in the fall.
I had apple trees in Boulder Creek CA and it was really cool to get up and look out the window and see the deer eating the apples.
We are doing the same thing with our northern Michigan property!
🎉love this❤
As someone who has grown up in the country in New Zealand and Australia, you are doing everything right. Plant trees, plant trees, and plant trees. Drip lines for irrigation are great as they'll send the roots deep. Learn to love your shovel and spade as you'll be using them a lot. If you have a septic tank (I'm not sure what you guys call them, but your sewage system) you can use the outflow line to irrigate non food trees/plants. That's particularly good for shelter belts etc and those plants will grow like they are on steroids. All the fruiting plants will need feeding and any fish offal , or well rotted chicken or horse manure is also good. This plus the organic material you are putting on top will bring the earthworms in which are fantastic for your soil. You might like to research sweetening the ground a bit with a light dusting of lime or gypsum around the plants (not on them). Deer will be particularly bad early in the season when the bucks are looking to rub the velvet off their new antlers and they will demolish a nice tree at a bush stage right down to ground level doing this. I suspect you may be investing in a small tractor with trailer and mower attachments soon to make life more efficient. Dont forget the boat!! Enroll in a racing program or something to keep your gills wet.
Thanks for all the tips! We’re still learning how to make the most of our compost. We’re collecting local chicken poo since we’re not ready for animals. But haven’t quite got our mix right yet. Someone else mentioned dead fish. I like that idea being so close to the lake. That should be easy. :)
I see a couple of honey bee hives in your future😋you are in a great location for it, they will go perfectly with your garden and the honey harvest is sooo good. Just combed honey😋😋😋
That video was the best you have done it kept a smile on my face the whole time,WELL DONE !!!
So glad to hear, thank you!
You have a nice sledding hill for the kids.
Time for some bees!! 🐝 🐝 🐝
Yesss! It's on our to do list!
@SailingSoulianis I've been keeping bees for quite awhile and the best advice I've ever received for new Beekeepers is....
"It's 2x as difficult to keep only one hive as it is to keep 2-5 hives" If you have time for one, you have time for 5. Having more can help you solve a lot of problems.
Good luck!
Random tips you should absolutely verify for yourself ... Dont mulch all the way to the base of a tree. Leave a good 3-4 inch ring of bare soil next the trunk. Not sure why you got grafted trees when you have that much space. You get some resilience from grafts, but the trees will stay MUCH smaller. Neem oil is a much better thing to spray on plants to keep away pests.
The trees have dwarfing rootstock. We wanted smaller trees to be able to harvest easier. As well as to cram in more variety.
So funny. My husband and I love watching your sailing videos bc we have a sailboat and my husband's dream is to love aboard one day. However, recently I've felt the need to buy land in Michigan and grow food and he just sent me this video. Love it! Definitely inspiring us to one day do both. How many acres do you have? And is your boat nearby?
Love you guys, love every one of your videos....
I get it, you've gotta make a living, but geez, we're on the AG1 train now? That stuff is terrible
Seems like all these sailing channels are selling their souls to AG1. 🤮
sailing or not. still enjoying your videos. I wish someday you'll be able to travel down the Mississippi river again,
Might be time to start a small beekeeping operation to help keep all that new growth going.
Yes! It's on the to do list!
You guys are are going to be fruitiful. I don't know if they are still available but I bought a scarecrow motion sensing water sprinkler. Anything that walks in front it will get a bath.
That’s an awesome idea. We will look it up
💚
If you can find a copy of The New Self Sufficient Gardener, by John Seymour it's an exceptional book on small scale organic gardening. Raised beds are covered in detail and it's a way to pack way more productivity into whatever space on the property you've allocated to growing veggies.
Someone else just recommended this, we have a copy on the way. :)
Dish soap has lots of variants. And those home grown tips might be a bit broadly applied sometimes. :-)
Good thought.
I love watching how your property is developing! I have some Filbert/Hazel Nut bushes at my place that are doing great. Just another bush to consider adding to your forest. Ours is 3 years old and produces a fair amount of nuts. Beating the squirrels to them is the major battle. You might want to see if any beekeepers local to you want to put a hive or 3 on your property, or get hives of your own. Bear proofing the hives might be an issue, though.
Ooh hadn’t thought about that. (The local beekeeper or the bear proofing!). We do want some honey though 🤔
There are a number of native plant nurseries in northern Michigan that may be interested and able in recommending some plants/seeds that are adapted for your area. These might do better that a seed mix from California. I love watching the adventures of your family.
Names? Locations? We’d love to find more local nurseries. We had our berry plants shipped from down state. But would prefer even closer if we could find it.
@@SailingSoulianis I am in southern Wisconsin and just Googled native plant nurseries in northern Michigan. Four Seasons in Traverse City seems to have good reviews. There is also Deer-resistant Landscaping in Clare. Good luck keeping the deer under control. Between them and rabbits we had to fence in the entire garden.
❤
Looks like you guys have enough space cleared to fly a Kitfox plane in and out?
Excellent episode.
I like your plan for the homestead!. Happy growing! What general area of Michigan is your property?
I grew up in Michigan and spent many years on the west coast. In the fall, I'm moving back to MI to settle in Traverse City after spending the last 13 years in Portland, OR.
I wish you continued luck with developing the homestead, sailing, and with your channel.
