    What have we sailors been up to on land this last year? We've got quite the start to our permaculture food forest -- have a look! Last year we started with a field of grass and weeds. Seven fruit trees, 135 plants, and 15 pounds of seed later, we’ve got THIS. Forgot to mention all the sweat and sore muscles, but if you can’t count it, does it count? 😜 For all you hardcore boaters, we'll be diving back into boat work in our next episode.
    Hope you enjoy!

    I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy your divergence from the sailing story. That said, I'm highly impressed with this video. You're obviously talented story tellers and it doesn't matter what the subject matter is, you present it beautifully. I'm hooked, I'll keep watching.

    Wow guys! I had tears in my eyes watching this. What an absolutely beautiful legacy you are leaving your daughter and the generations that follow her. Not just in terms of the land and plants but the illustration of your love for her and each other and a guide for them on how to be a family. I have a similar small acre lot in the country here in Australia. I have planted trees which will not mature until long after I am gone, but I hope my future grandchildren and great grandchildren get to enjoy their peaceful shade. Love your videos and watching you grow as a family.

    I enjoy watching your RUclips channel and reading some of the comments. One quick note, be careful to not use to much cedar mulch. Cedar & Apple trees do not work together very well. The Cedar mulch should not be used around apple trees. It's acidic in nature, preventing moisture from being lost. As it decomposes, the soil loses its PH, as it adds to the PH. Apples should be handled with a PH of 7.2 to 6.7. Keep up the good work.

    Haskap berries are very popular in Quebec (Camerise in French). They are in season right now and delicious. More tart than a blueberry and full of crazy vitamins. We made jam (no sugar) and then ate it in grilled cheese with Brie and caramelized onions and it was Amazing. I hope you like them, love your ideas!!

    You’ll be amazed what you can do. I spent 25 years on 12 acres and the best I can recommend is mulch and as much as you can lay down , the difference in soil moisture between mulched and unmulched is staggering. Great idea on the cardboard weed suppressors , I used three of four layers of news print . Pest protection is essential. Get a quad bike and a little trailer, it will make your life a lot easier. Good luck, you’ll never regret the life this is going to give you and your children. Cheers from NZ

    As someone who has grown up in the country in New Zealand and Australia, you are doing everything right. Plant trees, plant trees, and plant trees. Drip lines for irrigation are great as they'll send the roots deep. Learn to love your shovel and spade as you'll be using them a lot. If you have a septic tank (I'm not sure what you guys call them, but your sewage system) you can use the outflow line to irrigate non food trees/plants. That's particularly good for shelter belts etc and those plants will grow like they are on steroids. All the fruiting plants will need feeding and any fish offal , or well rotted chicken or horse manure is also good. This plus the organic material you are putting on top will bring the earthworms in which are fantastic for your soil. You might like to research sweetening the ground a bit with a light dusting of lime or gypsum around the plants (not on them). Deer will be particularly bad early in the season when the bucks are looking to rub the velvet off their new antlers and they will demolish a nice tree at a bush stage right down to ground level doing this. I suspect you may be investing in a small tractor with trailer and mower attachments soon to make life more efficient. Dont forget the boat!! Enroll in a racing program or something to keep your gills wet.

      Thanks for all the tips! We’re still learning how to make the most of our compost. We’re collecting local chicken poo since we’re not ready for animals. But haven’t quite got our mix right yet. Someone else mentioned dead fish. I like that idea being so close to the lake. That should be easy. :)

      @SailingSoulianis I've been keeping bees for quite awhile and the best advice I've ever received for new Beekeepers is....
      "It's 2x as difficult to keep only one hive as it is to keep 2-5 hives" If you have time for one, you have time for 5. Having more can help you solve a lot of problems.
      Good luck!

    @david.seholm 11 месяцев назад

    Random tips you should absolutely verify for yourself ... Dont mulch all the way to the base of a tree. Leave a good 3-4 inch ring of bare soil next the trunk. Not sure why you got grafted trees when you have that much space. You get some resilience from grafts, but the trees will stay MUCH smaller. Neem oil is a much better thing to spray on plants to keep away pests.

    • @SailingSoulianis
      @SailingSoulianis  11 месяцев назад

      The trees have dwarfing rootstock. We wanted smaller trees to be able to harvest easier. As well as to cram in more variety.

    I love watching how your property is developing! I have some Filbert/Hazel Nut bushes at my place that are doing great. Just another bush to consider adding to your forest. Ours is 3 years old and produces a fair amount of nuts. Beating the squirrels to them is the major battle. You might want to see if any beekeepers local to you want to put a hive or 3 on your property, or get hives of your own. Bear proofing the hives might be an issue, though.

    Looks like you guys have enough space cleared to fly a Kitfox plane in and out?

    Excellent episode.
    I like your plan for the homestead!. Happy growing! What general area of Michigan is your property?
    I grew up in Michigan and spent many years on the west coast. In the fall, I'm moving back to MI to settle in Traverse City after spending the last 13 years in Portland, OR.
    I wish you continued luck with developing the homestead, sailing, and with your channel.
