This isn't only one of the best comedies in recent history, it's up there with one of the best movies. Period. First time, seventh time, nineteeth time, doesn't matter how many times I watch it, I'm equally as hooked, amused, and engaged every time.
Not enough people know about how awesome this movie is! The technical filmmaking, the comedy, performances and story are all 5 stars. This is a near perfect movie and I wish more people saw it in theaters. It was awesome.
A wonderful essay, thank you - but David Fincher was mentioned more often than the actual directors of "Game Night," John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who weren't credited at all.
Genuinely, thanks for calling us out on this. Both Mel and Stu (who run Shot Zero) work in the film industry and we try to avoid giving the directors too much of the credit and too much of the blame. We clearly didn't strike the right balance in the video. I'll update the RUclips description to mention John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein by name.
This movie is so good, every time I watch it I am impressed by how tight the script is, how good the directing is, and the jokes are creative and land perfectly. Based on this alone I went to the theatre to watch DnD Honor Among Thieves, I knew John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein would knock it out of the park and I was not disappointed
@@Forlore Thank you very much! We appreciate the kind words. We are also very active on Substack and social media (insta, twitter etc) if you’d like to follow our written breakdowns!
Great video. Since the first time I watch this film I thought of David Fincher filmmaking. My favorite shot when Bateman drops the egg and the camera passes through the railing remind me of a Birdman scene or a Watchmen. I like those shots.
Thanks again Stu, nice breakdown of movie making methods, and more tips on films to see. You people are a good gang of usual suspects I am looking forward to seeing more of. 👍😁
Subbing now so I can say I was there when this channel ONLY had 10k subs. Great work and great analysis. This is so much more fun than watching someone rip apart a film trying to do a bad Roger Ebert impersonation
How things have changed - so interesting to know there was CGI for the egg. If you watch outtakes for conedy Down With Love or Just Like Heaven it shows actors repeatedly doing one shot of throwing or hitting an object to make it look coincidental that they got it in one in the final edit. Thanks 👍🏽
Is “oner” a more common term than “continuous take” or “long shot”? This was the first time I encountered it. Due to the lack of explanation, it wasn’t clear what this meant until the brief clip of the scene from Children of Men.
Thanks for pointing that out. Oner is def the common term in the film industry, I'm just not sure how widespread it is outside of filmmaking + cinephile circles. Still trying to dial in the right tone/level for our videos. Could be the kinda thing I put an definition on screen for without mentioning in the VO.

Small correction. At 1:07 you label Fight Club as a film from 2018, it should be 1999. Awesome video otherwise.
