How is this oner from GAME NIGHT so seamless?
Game Night (directed by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein) features a setpiece staged as a oner - a single, continuous shot - that is a basically a "hot-stakes game of hot potato". And it's really good! But how did they do it? And *why* is it so good?

Why the fight choreography of Arnie's TOTAL RECALL is so good (and so brutal).
Просмотров 193 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Total Recall (1990) is so brutal and so great! But what makes it so brutal (and so great)? We compare the 1990 original to breakdown the differences in their approaches, their fight choreography and the filmmaking to look at how each movies makes us feel about the character of Douglas Quaid, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 original and Colin Farrell in the 2012 remake. We also discu...
The longsword duel from THE KING is on point.

The King (2019) has one of the best sword fights seen on screen recently. But what makes it so good? We break down the swordplay, choreography and filmmaking of this duel and what makes it work so well (and not so well). Special thanks to Gindi Wauchope from @TheSchoolofHistoricalFencing for his technical and historical insights. And many thanks to my sparring partners featured in this video: L...
How does Ripley take control in Alien?
Просмотров 10 тыс.6 месяцев назад
After Dallas has died, #Ripley is next in command. But being in command and being in control are different things. So Ripley needs to assert herself to the remaining crew. All the performances are powerhouses and make this work dramatically, but Ridley Scott use some great visual storytelling to support them. Let us break down how! Read more about how #ALIEN frames Ripley in our *free* substack...
How is this shot from so freaking EPIC?!

Facehugger attacks Ripley in Alien
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.6 месяцев назад
This scene from #Alien where Ash, Dallas and #Ripley search for the #facehugger is a masterclass in quiet tension. But what makes it so good? We try to break down how it works. Ripley invades Ash's space in Alien
Просмотров 38 тыс.6 месяцев назад
This seemingly simple scene from #Alien - where #Ripley confronts Ash for the first time - is fascinating: The angle on Ash was shot *without* #SignourneyWeaver, but they use a stand-in to make the frame dirty; while the reverse angle on Ripley was shot later as a clean single° (see PS below) Yet the cumulative affect really works - Ash feels suspicious, and Ripley feels strong. While the short...
Logos, Incorporated honourable mentions

(no need to adjust your monitors) We capped off our Logos, Incorporated week with three honourable mentions. These shots don't transition into the film's opening as Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Mummy, Waterworld, and Sunshine did. But all are so iconic you can probably instantly recognise what movies they're from, anyways. 1. The Matrix 2. Scott Pilgrim vs The World 3. Blade Runner 2049
David Fincher on handheld cameras

In the early 80s, commercials director Leslie Dektor pioneered the use of 'shaky cam'. But as David Fincher explained to Art of the Title (which we quote in this video!) while Dektor's work had a profound impact on the future, its cineamtic power comes from the past... #davidfincher #directing #filmmaking #cinematography
Why is Ryan Gosling so funny? Because he's a CLOWN.

We are convinced that Ryan Gosling has studied clowning. In the Nice Guys, Ryan Gosling's Holland March feels like a clown: drunk, clumsy, impish, greedy, and dressed LOUDLY.
How the scientific detail of DEEP IMPACT is so good!
Просмотров 66311 месяцев назад
... in which we praise some on-screen graphics! 1998's #DeepImpact was (and still is) lauded for its degree of attention to scientific accuracy. You can see this in the differences between how the Government and the Newsroom render (with 90s era CGI!) the impending comet's tail. It's a small detail that quietly reflects the attitudes of the film's characters and their worlds. Just great visual ...
The detached, indifferent camera of Zodiac
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Год назад
In the neonoir (ish) #Zodiac, the crew laid 450 feet of dolly track, mounted a camera inside the Chevrolet Corvair, and pushed the Corvair down that track in order to create a camera move with the detachment and indifference that David #Fincher was after. Audio taken from the commentary track for Zodiac. We miss those days. #filmmaking #cinematography #grips #directing

From what my reading tells me, the Rondel dagger and Dudgeon knife were specifically designed to spread the links of chain mail. The classic Scottish Dirk reflects this, with it's triangular point. Maybe I've been mis-informed..?

Havent seen this movie yet but i want to. I love seeing fights that arent super strobed, so many fights the past few years seems to have the camera angles change every half second it seems. I love actually being able to actually see the fight and see not only how the attacker starts and follows through but also how the other person reacts and adjusts to the attack

So Henry won because when he fell over, his out-stretched leg tripped Percy, who was so wildly swinging his sword against an armoured opponent that the sheer momentum of his own swing destabilized him, giving Henry the chance to climb over him and get the dagger in ?

I love how you point out that even when a move is a mistake, it’s a believable one because no one is going to not make any mistakes in a fight. Whoever wins is just the person who made them less.

Most times I watch something and think, "stab him now, now, stab now, or....now!" The flaw in most choreography is as you said, always aiming for the opponent's weapon not the opponent and forcing the action that way. One of my favorites is the duel in Troy, the duel with Hector and Achilles has moments that'd clench an anus because you feel Achilles is trying to beat and kill Hector. There's also not a lot of films that go the route Kill Bill Vol. 2 went, when the two best finally face each other. It's Tarantino's action style but I loved that the fight itself didn't last that long. From a story context protagonist vs the villain, those final confrontations shouldn't take that long. Spike vs Vicious is similar where there's no point in a drawn out final fight when everything leading to that moment was already a grind. It takes me out of films when the final big duel is the same as everything that came before. Historical duels are different, we already know the outcome so choreography might not impact our perception of the expected outcome. The story is about how we get there, bad choreography makes it look like the character has plot armor instead of historical.

What I realized by this scene is that movies portray SWORD fights, whilst real-life portrays FIGHTS, and the King is more akin to real life

Choosing a longsword for this duel was the height of stupidity (but maybe there was a cultural reason, IDK). I love the longsword but in full plate maces, hammers or even daggers would have been a waaaay better of a choice. Neither was in any danger until the grappling phase.

I used to think realism in movies was the only way and how dare filmmakers do unbelievable things all the time. That is, until movies started having night time or cave scenes very dark to the point you can’t make out anything easily. Oh my word how awful are those scenes and they annoy me!

I don't mind the whole attacking the air in fight choreography so much as long as it's close enough when watching it in normally. When it gets so far that it becomes distracting to the fight, then I like a fight a lot less. For actual sword fighters, I'm sure that threshold is a lot tighter.

I see a lot of admiration for this scene, and you only have to look at the fact that they wear armor WRONG and that the armor is shown badly here. Chain mail should hide under the cuirass, and cover the entire throat. Otherwise, the armor makes no sense, because one angled thrust in the neck is enough and the fight is over.

It's a good reenactment of something that never happened at Shrewsbury. I agree that they did a good job at a fictional representation, although once it went to the ground they would have pulled out their rondel daggers. Like the the movie The Last Duel with Will Damon.

Good analysis. It's also worth noting that trained fighters make plenty of mistakes in the heat of the moment. I've watched guys fumble their magazines, forget to hit the bolt release, etc in the heat of combat. I can also sit and break down a UFC match and usually point out multiple errors. Simple fact is that your intelligence and coordination go down relative to your stress level rising. So to me it adds a degree of realism when people make mistakes or do things that don't make sense in a fight. Just adds to the idea that they're actually in a fight.

I think using more thrusts in films fights may be really hard to execute safely. They are really dangerous in fact and actors usually doesn’t have any armor and protective gear. So it can easily be fatal because it may be too effective;)

Oof the second fight scene is so bad... Everyone always closes to hand to hand for absolutely no reason. Collins Quaid was made unbelievable and unimpressive because of that fight scene. It was clear our "hero" had plot armor, and nothing was at stake for the viewer.
