Do I need an x470 board for a R5 2600? I was just going to get a $100 board like the Asus PRIME B350-PLUS, the only OC I was going to do is get the ram up to 3200?

Small mistake in the video, the cheaper X470 boards don’t feature a doubler. Only the Asrock X470 Taichi, Asus X470 ROG Crosshair VII Hero, Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 and MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC feature a doubler.
In Germany the best value is the Taichi Ultimate by far. It has the same 10Gbe controller as the Asus standalone card that costs 100,- bucks. And the whole board is just 275,- here.
I ended up with a Asus X370 prime pro due to X470 shortages at the time of my build. Board seems to be solid and I'm not sure what I'm really missing from the X470
It was an error but it doesn't change anything about the Prime Pro having a good VRM. Rather 6 phases with solid components than for example 10 phases with doubling and mediocre components at best. ;) Based upon the VRM alone I wouldn' hesitate to choose the Prime Pro, you won't win overclock records but it will make any current and future compatible CPU run close enough to its maximum potential that you don't want to increase the power beyond that point unless you are participating in an overclocking competition. The X370 Prme Pro costs €135, the X470 Prime Pro €176. Yes, there is some price gouging (early adoption fee) going on, the prices should drop later.
TY! I'm very happy with my asus prime x470, my ram took 3533 cl 14 and tight 2ndary timings with it and in overall now 2700x is better than stock 8700k and even with 4.8 in some games (like fc5 for example i have bench video with results). Hope new bioses will improve it even further.
The entry level boards don't have doublers, they just have paired MOSFET types per phase like the ASRock B350's, which isn't the same thing. The power output is the same as if they only had a single MOSFET type per phase. The MSI also uses slightly better MOSFETs, but only slightly. I'm not sure about the BIOS situation, but with the 300 series Gigabyte didn't have every BIOS option unlocked for manual control on all of their boards, only the higher end X370's got it. Whereas MSI had full control across their entire range. So if it's the same with the 400 series, then that's something to take into consideration. Albeit it doesn't matter too much if you're not going to be overclocking, or at least any more than a mild OC, but this is personal preference. The Prime Pro only has doublers on the SoC VRM too just to be clear. But it's still the best all around board and has the best core VRM out of the choices listed anyway. ASUS was the only other vendor with a fully unlocked BIOS across their entire range for the 300 series too so it should be the same for the 400 series. Another thing to note is that the ASUS ITX board only has a single SoC VRM phase which while fine for a stock APU and RAM OC, isn't going to be enough for OCing the GPU on an APU. If the X470 ASRock ITX board is similar to the X370 one though then it should have two, and a fully unlocked BIOS as well. Being an owner of an MSI B350 board, I'd be cautious about calling their power system better. Sure, the mosfets are more capable, but their cooling on my board is sadly lacking, and it's a weird size so getting improved mosfet cooling is a nightmare. The clocks on my R5 1600 aren't limited by power output, they're limited by the VRM heatsinks, and yes, this is with a 120mm Gentle Typhoon blowing right over the VRM area. Pushing up to 3.8Ghz the VRMs got uncomfortably hot under load. Safe, but too hot for my comfort, and the temps were not stabilising either. I've dropped back to stock until I can pick up an X470 board with better VRM cooling. Probably the base X470 Taichi at this point (tho Gaming 7 and Hero are under consideration too).
I think you missed the best X470 value board: The ASRock X470 Master SLI/ac. It's only $10 more than the very cheapest boards while having better power delivery and wifi. It has similar features to it's more expensive relative, the Fatal1ty K4 but trades an audio upgrade for wifi, which I think is the right call. Good onboard wifi is a valuable feature. The upgrades this board provides are worth much more than the small increase in price.
it doesn't have better power delivery than anything. it's got one of the worst VRMs of any x370 and even b450 board out there, like all asrocks with the exception of the taichi. cheapest of the cheap components and a 4 phase, wouldn't trust a stock 2700x to do its thing on this board. the msi b450 mortar has better power delivery at a cheaper price.
I love how you have a no compromise/non-budget thingy as well. While I'll never be a rich man, I am able to save up to buy top of the line, just because... because I wish to I guess... However, with MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte being out of the question due to GPP sillyness, the choises are somewhat reduced. Fighting first world problems is tiring.
No, of course not. It was more a comment about there now being only one single manufacturer left to buy where I live :) I was more fan of the Taichi Ultimate in any case, due to the 10Gb network capabilities.
never understood this argument... the only reason asrock wouldn't participate in the GPP when it was still a thing was cause they never made any GPUs to begin with
GOOD JOB, Steve! love the benckmark videos and reviews. looking to build a new pc down the road and your vids have been a great help on keeping up on the tech sector.
Good job Steve! But I have to mention, we are really at the beginning. There will be more X470 mobos until late summer I think. The Asus ROG Strix x470-f looks very good (and I hope it packs good vrm (last year's model did) :)
GJ steve @Hardware Unboxed, but as a addition i personally would also have highlighted the older mini ITX B350I Pro AC with 6+2 IR IR3555 60A on all 8 of them and a price around 120€ in Europe as prob the best budget mini Powerhorse. Thats makes it a better VRM then the ASUS X470 Prime Pro that has a 6+2 IR3553 40A design, the mini ITX B350I Pro AC is essencially on par with the X470-F ROG Strix Gaming in terms of raw Power Delivery.
Fantastic videos! Only just found your channel as I'm retiring a 5 y/o system. Both the mini-itx boards are completely sold out and backlogged in the States right now as well. It has caused me to sideline attempting your Phanteks Shift build, and go with a SATX form factor. If only the standard cases were as stylish!
I have the Asus Prime x470 Pro and I love it. It's by far the best board I've had yet. I plan on upgrading sometime soon. I'm going to get the x570 version I know it won't disappoint.
Hi, Steve. Any chance you could do a dedicated review of the Asus Prime X470 Pro, some time in the near future? Out of all the new Asus X470 boards, and all the new Ryzen content on RUclips, nobody has done a good in depth review of that board yet. I know you probably get a million requests like this, but it can't hurt to ask. Thanks either way.
Being an owner of Asus in the future from the time of this video.... I'm very impressed with Rog Strix X470-I Gaming (itx) motherboard. Stability and overclocking was excellent.
Good job, Steve. I'm getting a R7 1700 so I'm looking at the X370 MB because the Corsair Vengeance LPX 3600MHz RAM (Samsung) I have is recommended in those MB's but not the X470's I checked a bunch of them... Yes Micro ATX X470 MB's are needed. Great video, again Mr. Hardware Unboxed.
I'm very happy with my Asus ROG Strix Gamming- X470-F. 3466 mhz with Samsung B-Die Gskill TridentZ, The OC profiles are neat, the UEFI BIOS is very intuitive, the voltages are stable, the PBO overdrive works well, the memory terciary timmings are very very tight and stable, the audio is good, the status LEDs are tiny but useful. On a bonus side, the RGB is there but subtle and controled (i don't fancy having a christmas tree on my computer case!), the I/O has suficient ports, the VRMs apear adequate and their temperatures are good. What i wish i had: Bios Flashback USB Slot (like the crosshair hero), so that i can be reasssured if a Bios flash goes wrong, i can still flash it anyways with the button, not going into the UEFI. Seems like a no-issue thing, but gives a lot of reassurance and ease of mind. Imho ALL boards should have that, like, mandatory but INTEL/AMD.
I made my own case that is only just larger than a full ATX board. Cut down an old atx case. Got rid of the drive bays and the PSU area and added a SFX PSU and water cooling. Am running a Gigabyte AX370 gaming 7 with a 2700X and 2 x 2.5" SSDs. could also add nvme drive at some point. It's so lite, I have to hold against it when pushing the front power button.
One more thing to note is that in Crosshair VII Hero, your M.2 slots are wired directly into the CPU instead of the Chipset meaning you can run 2x PCIe M.2 SSDs in RAID without the chipset bottlenecking its performance. Not sure if its also true for other high end X470 boards though.
Nice line up there. However the ASUS x470-f gaming should get an honorable mention, as it’s very stylish and has great performance and features. I have both this board and the Hero and I agree that the hero is a fabulous motherboard, it can use more UEFI maturity though. The gigabytes pro offering is an incredible value and has nice Ryzen 2 memory compatibility compared to most other x470 motherboards, 3200 speed memory support, which I find a bit lacking right now. I see that ASUS has a interesting 4019 beta bios out right now that does address many areas of concern particularly some strange Qfan inconsistencies that seem to throttle your cpu fans incorrectly while xfr does its thing. But all in all, I must admit I was never an ASUS fan before until I purchased the X370-f gaming. This board has a very mature UEFI right now and is a great value, runs the new Ryzen line well and is a sold overclocker. It’s nice that these boards will support the next AMD offering, and maybe beyond..
Looking into more detail about these motherboards, I think the one you should go with for overclocking purposes, is the Asus X470 Prime Pro considering it, using the same premium MOSFETs as the Crosshair Hero VII. Atleast for me that should be the bare minimum for the 8-core/16-threaded beasts.
I decided on the Gigabyte X470 Gaming 5. MicroCenter knocked off $50 with the processor so it was $130. I was deciding between the Asus Prime-Pro and the Gaming 5 but liked having the integrated BT and preferred the looks. The BIOS seems a bit more basic to me than my last Asus Z170 board but has everything I need. Sometimes less is more. Not like I'm busting out LN2. The Gaming 5 does/2700X not like my Corsair LED 3000 CL15 (Hynix IC) from my SkyLake though. Can't get past 2666.
Care to explore BCLK overclocking on Ryzen 2000? There have been reports of 2700X boosting to over 4,5GHz at 104MHz BCLK through PB2/XFR2. Maybe you could also check how it affects RAM overclocking.
Good job Steve! Thanks for the advice. I wanna upgrade to Ryzen but my case is micro atx and those motherboards are so expensive. Might have to upgrade to Intel instead though I really want a six core at least cpu or preferably an 8 core cpu so I have headroom for future proofing.
Having just watched the B450 VRM Temp test video, it seems to me that many of the X470 boards will have the same vrm airflow issues as their B450 counterparts since they deploy the same "big plastic IO hoods". My personal choices would be either the Asus Prime Pro or the MSI Gaming Plus
the reason I would go for the asrock taichi is because of the side-mounted 2x usb, most case have 2 usb on the top of the case and they give a very bulky cable, the asrock taichi has a side-mounted, right-angle port just for that, the reason I need this is because I'm going to the 570x(corsair also sells a psu shround for 3.99 now!) and cable management is very much needed and this will help because gigabyte boards put this port at the bottom which would be very ugly!
I apologize if you said it in video. Watching video while typing this. But i have msi x470 gaming plus. And its a freakin nightmare right now to get voltages to set correctly. Cant undervolt any of it in my bios. If my volts are not set for vcore between 1.3-1.35 volts in bios,no matter what i do lower or higher, try ryzen master but it will spike vots to 1.4-1.5v on vcore. Something is seriously up with msi currently and i seen some forum posts so i know im not the only one. No matter what LLC combo u choose it doesn't change.
If the x470 itx from asrock uses the same vrm as the x370 version, I would stay away from it, as it only has a fancy looking 3+2 phase design (Using two, I think 24A, power stages per phase without doublers). And for a 3+2 180$ is just a bit insulting. If the x470 from Asus has the same VRM as the x370 itx, it would be a better buy in my opinion, at least for an 8 core. The x370 has a 6+1 phase design with 50A power stages, which seems a lot more adequate for its price.
Good video, shame it came bit late for me, though I guess since I did order Gigabyte X470 Ultra Gaming, I am not doing that badly, I paired it with R5 2600X. Hopefully my old 2x8GB of 2400Mhz RAM will overclock well, since I would love to avoid buying that in current market. But according to video of first gen Ryzen it shouldn't need to get too far to do well with GTX1070... Though I am not going to play with timings, they multiply too fast, at first there was just one, then five, then secondary made it ten, then I found another five and I was like... no, just no. :-D Anyway, nice video. :-)
Thanks for a great video as usual. I was hoping to see where ASUS ROG STRIX X470-F GAMING will rank up, but I find it oddly missing from the categories :(
I was wondering about that board too and how it's ranked. It looks interesting, but maybe doesn't make the cut to be included in "the Best of" category, although it has a lot of the same stuff as most of these boards. Price is pretty decent too. BTW, I lmao playing that game.
Yeah it is strange because here at least it is more expensive that the ASUS pro version he recommends in this video as best all-rounder. And yeah game is great isn't it :D the music too! :D
Just a bit of an update about the X470-F. The ASUS Pro he mentioned, in "best all rounder" is in the "under $200" tier, and the X470-F is in a higher class, more of a "higher end" board, I guess, according to what I've been reading, but is $204.00 right now, just over the "Best under $200" class. . After a lot of researching, I'm finding that the X470-F is largely being rated as one of the "best" boards and better values, usually ranked in the top 5...based on many reviews, tests and articles and being compared to such boards as the AORUS Gaming 7, Crosshair Hero, yet notably cheaper. So I am still surprised that there was no mention of the ROG STRIX X470-F . Like I said before, maybe it just didn't make the cut for "best of" with Steve here, although many other tech gurus and reviewers rate it pretty damn high on their lists and it is cheaper than most of the boards in its class, which is supposedly "high end". Whatever tier it is actually in, from what I've read, it has great ratings and reviews as well as being noted as a great value. Finding all this out only made it harder for me to decide which board to get, lol. Don't know if this helped any, but thought I'd let ya know what I found out. If ya know of any major drawbacks of this board, let me know.
Hi Mystic...I haven't decided yet. It is between the AORUS Gaming 7 and the X470-F . I found that the AORUS 7 is "supposed" to have 2 full NVME PCIE x4 M.2 slots, both being dedicated..meaning they don't share lanes with any x16 slot. The AORUS 7 definitely has 1 such M.2, ( as does the X470-F) but it seems it may have 2. So, I have downloaded the manuals for both boards so I can read the specific details on both of them. I really like the ROG X470-F, especially for the price, but having 2 full NVME M.2s may be the deciding factor as I might want to go RAID in the future and having 2 full NVMEs for that would be outstanding. Both boards are great and have a lot to offer, so it will depend on what I learn from the manuals.
Hey Steve, thanks for the vid and your recommendation! Could you please change the background music when the text animation ("... Best value all rounder..." for example) kicks in ? (at least in future videos pls) sounds out of key which is piercing :(( thanks
Hardware Unboxed Hi Steve, thanks for the video...Since you did not REALLY recommend any Asrock Mainboards, I am a little bit unsure about which Mainboard to get...I am one of those people who boycott the ones, who were involved in the GPP-affair and I just wanted to know two things: How does the "ASRock X470 Taichi" compare to the "Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 WIFI"? I know the Gigabyte one has a lot of comfort features including the better Bluetooth etc. but how do they compare in build quality, especially in terms of overclocking and stability/Ram compatibility? And the second thing that I wanted to know: Any Info on the "Biostar X470GT8"? Will you get your hands on one? I am really interested in it, because it has a dual Bios like Gigabyte...but nobody is really covering it.
hahaha biostar make some of the best boards on the market, and its m.2 speeds and placement are better than any gigabyte, do these reviewers on youtube even know what theyre talking about or what. www.win-raid.com/t2739f44-OFFER-Gigabyte-GA-AX-Aorus-Gaming-BIOS-mod-42.html
Why are you linking to a thread where nobody is talking about the Biostar on the linked page? I would like to see a review about a Biostar board, that is positive, but everything I read about Biostar AM4 boards is, that its Bios is always really barebones, that Bioses get rarely updated (you have to wait months until compatibility issues get fixed) and that memory compatibility is the worst. The problem for me is, that nobody even bothered to review the "Biostar X470GT8". People apparently have been burnt by Biostar. It is a pity!
ask KET on the winraid forums, he will tell you how much better the biostar is over the gigabyte

The problem IMHO is that we know they will release a Z470 board with another 4x PCI-express 3.0 for an M.2 slot more I suppose. And possibly less compromises. The new Gigabyte AX470 Gaming 5 cost €50-60 more than the old AX370 Gaming 5 right now and it has dropped the capacitors to 5K ones and dropped some of the RGB and the audio is said to be "Vibes" which I don't really know what it is but it seem like it may have some improvement on the line/mic in like on the ASUS boards? ASUS boards use two OP-amps for the output too though. Similarly the Z370 Gaming 5 seem to have worse sounce than the AX370 Gaming 5 too where the later used TWO ALC1220 chips where the Z370 one just seem to use one and have worse audio-quality but possibly just the input I don't know. The new AX470 may have better wireless connectivity though (dropped one LAN port from AX370 Gaming 5 too) but is it really worth so much more money and have it dropped audio quality and component quality? The AX470 on the other hand is 8+3 phases whereas the AX370 is claimed to be 6+4 phases so maybe the AX470 have stronger power delivery to the CPU and hence is better. But ... it feel so cheap with the 5K capacitors!! X470-F Strix I assume have 10K ones but you lose the wireless LAN and the X470 Taichi have 12K ones. I wish the boards could simply become better so it would be easier to choose. For sure the X470 Ultra Gaming cost about the same as the X370 Gaming 5. I haven't compared those. Gigabyte boards are a lot more expensive in Europe than in the US relative the rest. The Gaming 5 cost much more than the Prime Pro here. Gigabyte use to give Steam wallet codes or now Far cry 5 with the purchase though but considering the price increase you do pay full price for that in the bundle .. Right now only the Z370 boards get Far cry 5 though, the X470 boards are just expensive. You get no game.
I'm actually looking to build a 2600x system right now and I keep looking at the Asus Prime X470 but seriously can't make my mind up. What would you suggest is the best board now in 2018 for a "budget" board. I'm looking to spend a maximum of £1000 for the whole system but still trying to decide what Motherboard and GPU to get
Hey, first of all great video. So I’m planning on picking up a ryzen 7 3700x with the asus prime x470 pro. Do you think my vrm temps will be good? Even with OC on the cpu?
Good video. I would easy go for ASRock X470 Taichi. But they dropped POWER and RESET bottom compared to Ultimate. Common Asrock.. Now I own ryzen 2600 noctua d14 and will like good mb for future upgrads. 8 core maybe more on 7nm. Asus Hero is too expensive in Denmark. Gigabyte love it but bios is bad. ASUS ROG Strix X470-F Gaming or ASRock Fatal1ty X470 Gaming K4? Need advice.
How does the CPU perform for each motherboard? I have read that although the AORUS stays cool it is at the cost of CPU performance. But like always it probably depends on all the components used.
Don't get why ITX motherboard are X470. What's the difference from a X370 and B350. Besides you can SLi or X-Fire (mGPU) on the X370 and can only X-Fire on the B350. Also Glad to see a decent VRM setup on ITX!
I guess Steve doesn't really like the STRIX X470-F Gaming? Looks as good as the Hero and has practically an identical BIOS no for much less money? Is there something maybe wrong with the VRM design perhaps? I personally can't find a better X470 board at the moment. It has the looks, the $194 price isn't too bad and the features all wrapped up, or so I thought. Wish I could find a decent video review of it. lol
I'd say the Asus Prime X470-Pro. Currently $139 on Amazon and it has basically everything you could ask for. I'm probably going to get it or the $189 Asus ROG Strix X470-F, it's a bit higher quality and a bit better overall for the 3700x. But I think Prime Pro would work just as well.
I'm on the fence and verge ofn building a new PC. But my hunch and logic tells me to wait for the powerful new ZEN2 architecture Ryzen 3xxx series and X570 motherboards - to have better support and CPU utilization. I know I can buy a high end x470 +2700x now. Then upgrade to 3800x or 3850x later. That means spending twice on CPU and not having the best most compatible motherboard for the CPU (I know 470x with bios works, but a newer mb will use the new CPU with greater power). So what so you say? Should I wait a few more months and build then? Any ideas when the new Ryzen CPU and x570 boards arrive?
I want to build pc now and i thought about it too. And i decided to build now because its too long to wait because the prices will be high for a quite long and i also would have been wait for the new cpu tests,so ill be able to build pc in autmn in the best case, but i dont wanna wait so long. Sorry for my english
@@dingusdadude5837 Hey. I personally think the wait is totally worth it! Depending on what you currently have and play. I personally got my old i5-3570K CPU (Ivy gen 3 Intel CPU), 16 GB of DDR3 RAM 1600mhz and 1080Ti Asus Rog Strix OC. I can run every game I'm interested in at around 4K 60fps. Totally at 144Hz 1440p. Sure there will be drops, but even a new PC will have them. Also the i5-3570K isn't struggling as much in 4K - because 4K eliminates CPU bottleneck and puts the load on the GPU- which is still #2 in the world basically. Games should be GPU focused anyways. The recent games I played were Dark Souls 3 which ran solid 4K 60FPS, then Devil May Cry 5 at 4K 60fps! (almost at max). The drops are mostly game optimization issues. And Pyre which is obviously light. Unless you have games you CAN'T run right now in a way you see fit - I don't see why you shouldn't just wait a while longer. Ryzen 3000 is just around the corner. Prices of Ryzen 2000 aren't THAT cheap. Same for X470 Motherboards...And stocks are issues too. If I pace my gaming correctly, and as long as I can run my games smoothly and at high-ultra quality - I rather hold on and squeeze the most out of my PC- before making a big upgrade. I can also play more on PS4 Pro to mix it up. The last thing I want is a new PC sitting idly for many months or underutilized. Since I don't build very often - because it's a HUGE undertaking! - I like to buy the best and latest (or close) - I feel like it's more bang for buck this way. And more longevity in use (futureproofing). I'll admit I'm rusty at building. I plan on buying: 1. Ryzen R9 3850x (or 3700x). 2. A X570 MB 3. 16GB DDR4 3600mhz 4. M.2 SSD Samsung 970 EVO/PRO, 4. Corsair AX860 PSU. 5. Corsair Obsidian 500D RGB 6. Keep my current 1080Ti until something like 3080 Ti comes around! 7. add a few RGB fans. Hopefully Ryzen 3000 coolers will be sufficient. What do you think? What is your current RIG? What games are you playing? At what settings? The things is- there simply aren't THAT many good PC games at all coming lately. Most good games are either dated, remasters or not-heavy ones. Which is why I was able to hold on for this PC upgrade for the last 3 years or so.
@@SlayerSeraph i just bought vega 64 and ryzen 2700,16gb ram and msi x470. It's enough for me now,so i can play every game in fullhd or even qhd. I don't plan to upgrade my pc next 1-2 years because I've just bought it. I just didnt want to wait so long for ryzen 3000. I'll probably upgrade my pc when ryzen 5000 comes xD. In my comment i was talking about the situation when u build pc from zero, but in your case you already have a pc and i agree with you,it would be better for you to wait the newest releases and upgrade
Curious if the x470 boards will be sufficient to overclock the Zen 2 chips next year. I'm thinking of buying an x470 and putting in the 1700x until next year. Are the Asus boards able to overclock? I worry that the current boards aren't built for it since you can't really over clock the Zen+ very much.
I've got a question: I'm planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 3rd generation processor when they come out, therefore I'm gonna need another motherboard. Since I'm using an external Soundcard (Xonar U5) there isn't really any point in having a board with a good audio codec, or is there? So what would be your best pick for an AM4-board (for gaming!) - that doesn't care about onboard sound? (From what I've read the MSI Tomahawk B450 seems to be the best sort of value-for-money-deal)
I'm getting Ryzen 5 2600x but not sure which mobo to choose between Asus ROG Strix B350-F Gaming and Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming, need some opinions here .
I picked up the X470 Aorus Gaming 5 a few days ago with a 2700X and been very happy with it. If the price is close I would go with the X470 rather than last gen B350. Micro Center is giving $50 off the board when you buy a processor.
If you're overclocking, skip the B350 boards and research the VRMs of your X470 options. Some of the entry level 470s may be using B350(/450) VRMs too. Needless to say, some of these boards have such cheap VRMs with poor cooling that they will run hotter than spec, quickly killing their lifespan. In fact, just subscribe to 'Actually Hardcore Overclocking' and check out Buildzoid's board breakdowns. He's currently buying a bunch of X470s to test and breakdown and will give you the info you need. Of course, if you aren't going to overclock, then you don't really need to worry about it. But keep in mind that the X470s include Precision Boost 2 and XFR2, which have shown to work VERY effectively.
Kent Stater Thx for the advise, yea agree with you cause at my place the price gap between the two boards that I mention not that much so I might go with the gigabyte aorus ultra gaming.
RyTrapp0 Never tried oc-ing and I do want to try it since this is the first big upgrade since I bought my pre-built PC 6 years ago which that time I had no ideal about PC building haha, also one more question should I wait for the b450 board release which I heard they could be showcasing at Taiwan computex 2018 and see how it looks first or just grab the x470 now?
Mr Boii If you have the money just grab the X470. If you want to wait 3-4 months and save $40 then it’s up to you. If you buy the x chip then no point in over-clocking. If you buy the non-x then you can over lock it to match the x but you get a weaker cooler. If you have the money I would just grab the gaming ultra and a 2600x or 2700x and call it a day.
Question with the X470 Prime Asus. Do I need to change ram from the one I have? (Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16gb) I have Ram that I want to put in the board but have heard that G-Skills Trident Z is preferred for Ryzen and this board. Why is that? I don't want to have to buy some different Ram as I like the RGB and it basically functions the same imo.
I am upgrading my old pc, going for ryzen 5 2600 (upgrading to zen2 and new amd gpus next year), I was about to buy Asus TUF X470-PLUS GAMING with Corsair Vengeance - 16GB (2x8) - DDR4 - 3200 MHz because its the only MoBo+RAM with QVL I can get at my country, or should I go for Asus PRIME X470-PRO/Gigabyte X470 AORUS Ultra Gaming (or even Asus ROG STRIX X470-F GAMING) with the same RAM (or others)? even if they arent QVL
the Asrock board is better. Gigabyte really cheaped out on the vrm for the gaming 5 and ultra Gaming. Asrock ahs a 6 phase all digital pwm with a doubler for the Master sli/ac. it's also the single best reviewed X470 board with more than 5 reviews and it seems to have the best out of box ram compatibility too. granted it has no dual bios apparently, so that's a drawback.
seems like the sponsor changed here at the x470 to Asus as by the b450 was msi which here isnt even listed or considered even though x470 carbon is way better then asus at that price .
So could you slap a Ryzen 7 3rd gen into the X470 and she would be good to go? Also where is a site to find out if one component(Cpu) is compatible with another component(motherboard). That is easy to navigate
I’m upgrading from an X370 MSI gaming plus to an X470 board. My RAM is 3200mhz, so which of these 2 boards have support to use that. X470 MSI Gaming Plus or Gigabyte Aorus ultra gaming. I understand I can just check and I have but my last MSI board wouldn’t go higher than 2133mhz so I wanted to check from someone who uses one to see if they know. I just need to know which one will run it better.
on the PC in the background...is that the GPU with the 3 fans pulsing red?...if so how are that fans in that position?.....looks good compared to just seeing the circuit board side of the GPU ...cant work out how it is 90 deg away from normal?
I just found the Asus x470 Prime Pro for under $100 on sale at Micro Center - basically a "no brainier" at that price? My CPU is the Ryzen 5 3600x (I chose the "x" because it was only $10 more than the 3600 (non "x")).
I hope you see this... Can you test the x470 gigabyte gaming 5 with either tridentz z rgb 3200 CL14 or the trident z rgb ryzen certified ram... Im at a point of buying one... I just don't want to have a boot issue... The non certified is cheaper... Thanks...

Do I need an x470 board for a R5 2600? I was just going to get a $100 board like the Asus PRIME B350-PLUS, the only OC I was going to do is get the ram up to 3200?

@@primaldark1724 Your'e welcome!
I love how I was wondering " but what's the best x470 mobo ?" before going to bed, and now wake up to that video.
Rather 6 phases with solid components than for example 10 phases with doubling and mediocre components at best. ;)
Based upon the VRM alone I wouldn' hesitate to choose the Prime Pro, you won't win overclock records but it will make any current and future compatible CPU run close enough to its maximum potential that you don't want to increase the power beyond that point unless you are participating in an overclocking competition.
The X370 Prme Pro costs €135, the X470 Prime Pro €176. Yes, there is some price gouging (early adoption fee) going on, the prices should drop later.
Hardware Unboxed If i don't want to overclock ryzen 2600x will xfr2 pb2 work fine on b350
But which one has the best BIOS?
Good job Steve, I agree with you, I know how to do comments.
I'm liking the Asus Prime X470. Sleek, Fancy, Stylish incorporating work and play functionality. Thanks for breaking them down for us. 🤜🤛
I1m gonna go with that board in my build, even though x570 is out already. It's cheaper now, and the looks just made me fall in love :D
TY! I'm very happy with my asus prime x470, my ram took 3533 cl 14 and tight 2ndary timings with it and in overall now 2700x is better than stock 8700k and even with 4.8 in some games (like fc5 for example i have bench video with results). Hope new bioses will improve it even further.
Bad Russian Man which memory u go with exactly?
drewmorg g.skill ripjaws v 3200c14
That's great news broski.
What RAM do you have?
какие температуры на VRM при 4.2 ghz у 2700x? и стоит ли брать эту материнку?
If the X470 ASRock ITX board is similar to the X370 one though then it should have two, and a fully unlocked BIOS as well.

yup, cheap marketing by calling it an 8phase... no benefit besides a bit lower temps whatsoever
Michael Gusevsky You can OC in the BIOS too, it's just that it doesn't have things like LLC control, and might not have some voltage controls either.
wizzie Marketing. Not even once.
Both good, just pick the one that's got the features and/or aesthetics you want.
Flabby Arms Joe It's not like a Taichi would be a disappointing purchase...
No, of course not. It was more a comment about there now being only one single manufacturer left to buy where I live :) I was more fan of the Taichi Ultimate in any case, due to the 10Gb network capabilities.
never understood this argument... the only reason asrock wouldn't participate in the GPP when it was still a thing was cause they never made any GPUs to begin with
Steve stop reading my mind for ideas to make your videos damn it!!!!!
But thanks a lot saved me a lot of trouble.
Good Job....keep it up.
But this motherboard has a bad vrm heatsinks and high temps - Buildzoid talks about it.
Can you do the same video for B450 models when they're out please? :D
AssassinKlD of course. Steve does it all 👍🏽
Awesome video. The small tidbit about the ASUS and making OCing easier is a deal breaker for me, gonna grab on in the new x570 series.
Every time I hear your music for transitions and b roll sound like a 911 documentary background music, like loose change. lol I love it.
Good reporting and helpful info 😎👍
I made my own case that is only just larger than a full ATX board. Cut down an old atx case. Got rid of the drive bays and the PSU area and added a SFX PSU and water cooling. Am running a Gigabyte AX370 gaming 7 with a 2700X and 2 x 2.5" SSDs. could also add nvme drive at some point. It's so lite, I have to hold against it when pushing the front power button.
Congratulations for 500k subs
Still rocking my ROG Vii, never did overclock it!
The ASRock line up is the only one I would touch. I just used both the X470 Taichi and the gaming K4 both with tge 2700x and are amazing setups.
TechnoFreak I only used a 3000c15 lit in it but had no issues. The Taichi however I'm running 3500@14-14-14-1t no issue.
Watched the whole video hoping for an mAtx x470 hint. :( great video too steve!
Here from the future. It is bright indeed.
No matter what LLC combo u choose it doesn't change.
www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/beware-of-new-bios-update-on-msi-z370-sli-plus.243050/
Pretty much what im going thru^
Good job Steve, you know how to do it.
Keep up the good work Steve and Tim, you guys are amazing!
Anyway, nice video.
James Bowerman did you end up going with the x470-F?
Hey Steve,
thanks for the vid and your recommendation!
Could you please change the background music when the text animation ("... Best value all rounder..." for example) kicks in ? (at least in future videos pls) sounds out of key which is piercing :(( thanks
How come you didn't bring up the ASRock master for the budget x470
No Asrock Master SLI/ac? Seems to be a much better value for entry level compared to the Ultra Gaming.
The ac version is more expensive, for entry level you'd be looking at the regular Asrock Master SLI, without ac.
the master sli has the worst VRM components in the segment, courtesy of nico semiconductor.
Good job Steve!
Good job Steve, I agree with you

Hi Steve, thanks for the video...Since you did not REALLY recommend any Asrock Mainboards, I am a little bit unsure about which Mainboard to get...I am one of those people who boycott the ones, who were involved in the GPP-affair and I just wanted to know two things:
How does the "ASRock X470 Taichi" compare to the "Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 WIFI"? I know the Gigabyte one has a lot of comfort features including the better Bluetooth etc. but how do they compare in build quality, especially in terms of overclocking and stability/Ram compatibility?
And the second thing that I wanted to know: Any Info on the "Biostar X470GT8"? Will you get your hands on one? I am really interested in it, because it has a dual Bios like Gigabyte...but nobody is really covering it.
I'd avoid the Biostar X470GT8 but the Asrock X470 Taichi is excellent.
Hardware Unboxed
Biostar Mobos seem to be really bad...so many people advise against them...thank you anyways!
hahaha biostar make some of the best boards on the market, and its m.2 speeds and placement are better than any gigabyte, do these reviewers on youtube even know what theyre talking about or what. www.win-raid.com/t2739f44-OFFER-Gigabyte-GA-AX-Aorus-Gaming-BIOS-mod-42.html
Just ordered MSI X470 Gaming Pro w/ R5 2600 ! Happy camper !
Best board is the MSI gaming pro carbon AC, better audio, blutooth and wifi. Also superior VRM's other than the tomahawk.
What about the ASUS ROG Strix X470-F Gaming?
they just suck your money
How does the CPU perform for each motherboard? I have read that although the AORUS stays cool it is at the cost of CPU performance. But like always it probably depends on all the components used.
Have you played with the high end MSI x470 boards? Seems no one had reviewed them. They interest me more than that other makes on the market.
Wish I could find a decent video review of it. lol
So what's the best entry level without orange highlights on it?
MSI X470 GAMING PRO

hi nice video.i'm new at liquid cooller, can tell me about the fan of liquid must be exhaust or put air inside?
Best bugdget (150€) motherboard for Ryzen 3600?
I plan on buying:
1. Ryzen R9 3850x (or 3700x).
2. A X570 MB
3. 16GB DDR4 3600mhz
4. M.2 SSD Samsung 970 EVO/PRO, 4. Corsair AX860 PSU.
5. Corsair Obsidian 500D RGB
Asrock grew up from noname mediocre manufacturer into real competitor for asus.
Hardware wise Taichi is amazing
Hi, between the Aorus ultra gaming and Asus Prime Pro, what is the best? the price doesn't matter. Thanks!
Curious if the x470 boards will be sufficient to overclock the Zen 2 chips next year. I'm thinking of buying an x470 and putting in the 1700x until next year. Are the Asus boards able to overclock? I worry that the current boards aren't built for it since you can't really over clock the Zen+ very much.
x470 prime pro vs x470 rog strix wich to pick and why?
Thanks Steve... 👌👍
Is the 2600x a good match for a x470 ultra gaming for general gaming and light browsing..
So when's that review of the deepcool Baronkase coming out?
I've got a question: I'm planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 3rd generation processor when they come out, therefore I'm gonna need another motherboard. Since I'm using an external Soundcard (Xonar U5) there isn't really any point in having a board with a good audio codec, or is there? So what would be your best pick for an AM4-board (for gaming!) - that doesn't care about onboard sound? (From what I've read the MSI Tomahawk B450 seems to be the best sort of value-for-money-deal)
Amazing Review
The only thing that is holding me back from switching to AMD is... There's no Maximus X Formula or Code equivalent for AMD.
AsusROG Strix X470F-Gaming not recommended ? Can I know the reason as well ? Thanks a lot
I am upgrading my old pc, going for ryzen 5 2600 (upgrading to zen2 and new amd gpus next year), I was about to buy Asus TUF X470-PLUS GAMING with Corsair Vengeance - 16GB (2x8) - DDR4 - 3200 MHz because its the only MoBo+RAM with QVL I can get at my country, or should I go for Asus PRIME X470-PRO/Gigabyte X470 AORUS Ultra Gaming (or even Asus ROG STRIX X470-F GAMING) with the same RAM (or others)? even if they arent QVL
what does the ASUS Prime Pro have over the Gigabyte Aorus Ultra Gaming that makes it the value all rounder?
Asus Strix x470-F and Asrock Taichi x470 are the best motherboards, considering value/features
How does the aorus x470 ultra gaming compared to asrock x470 master sli/ac?
He sometimes totally forget some brands. In entry: asrock. In the best: MSI. At least he could mention why he is not comparing them.
I'd recommend the Master SLI because it's the best rated x470 board on newegg right now and because Gigabyte boards aren't that great with their BIOS
-I shit my pants productions- Jup I hate their Bios
the Asrock board is better.
Lmao 😂 😂 love how you lost your train of thought a bit in the end.
And the boards above/around 200 dollars but under best of the best?
Like Asus Rog Strix x470-F and MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon (AC)?
Coming from the B450 motherboard review, does the Gigabyte X470 ultra gaming suffer the same vrm heating issue like the Gigabyte B450?
no
Wasn't there supposed to be a speical chpset for micro ATX Ryzen CPU's? Like back in the launch stuff... Or was that the ITX?
I just need to know which one will run it better.
good job steve
on the PC in the background...is that the GPU with the 3 fans pulsing red?...if so how are that fans in that position?.....looks good compared to just seeing the circuit board side of the GPU ...cant work out how it is 90 deg away from normal?
Best x470 for ryzen 3000 8cores please
X470 Aorus ultra gaming or B450 Gaming Pro Carbon which is better in your opinion overall?
wrong motherboard shown at 1:19? X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming heat sink doesn't have fins in the product listing on Amazon
is it worth upgrading to crosshair vii hero if I have a 2700x or should I keep my crosshair vi hero?
I just found the Asus x470 Prime Pro for under $100 on sale at Micro Center - basically a "no brainier" at that price? My CPU is the Ryzen 5 3600x (I chose the "x" because it was only $10 more than the 3600 (non "x")).
I hope you see this... Can you test the x470 gigabyte gaming 5 with either tridentz z rgb 3200 CL14 or the trident z rgb ryzen certified ram... Im at a point of buying one... I just don't want to have a boot issue... The non certified is cheaper... Thanks...
mATX is becoming very popular, its a shame they cant get a x470 on mATX.
Which PC case is it behind you?
please do a video like this for b450 motherboards
I'll have it ready for you in 3 hours mate ;)
Hardware Unboxed thank you can't wait! :)
