Nice video. Thank you! I’m a full time woodworker and I use hot glue everyday. Rocking is a part time hobby and why I never thought about hot glue for dopping is a big “duh”. A little tip… I heat the glue around the stone with a heat gun for about five seconds and the glue releases immediately.

Rubbing alcohol and denatured alcohol releases hot glue in seconds, as long as the alcohol doesn't damage the stone. That I'm no sure of. Thanks for another video

Thanks for the great video Dave!!! I was having a really hard time today with my green dop when I was making cabs for a fridge magnet order. Was making a mental checklist of what could've been going wrong. Dirty cab bottoms, bad dop, stones not getting hot enough. Finally it clicked...
Hmm, I'm working in my open aired garage... it's rainy and 40° outside.
My cabs were cooling off so quickly that my dope wasn't adhering to the stones! Basically, the outside temp had the same effect of them being put in the freezer. Just came right off with the slightest pressure.
I finally started to use some Gorilla brand super glue gel, but again, it takes awhile to set when it's cold.
I am most definitely going to go out and get myself a good hot glue gun now!
    Thanks again!

Next time you're around, hit me up and I'll show you the sights.
Tried out the hot glue yesterday and it worked well. No problems except the water to my polish wheels was so cold after 45 min I couldn't feel my hands. Lol. Guess I better rig up a water heating unit for my water reservoir. (Like I said before, I work out in an open aired garage, so it gets cold!) Lol.

Thanks for the tips bud! I am very thankful for your channel. Lapidary seems to be a somewhat "forgotten art" these days. When you mention lapidary to someone, they usually say, "what's that?" LOL. So it's pretty difficult to connect with people with useful tips and knowledge. I love tumbling, but haven't done much lapping or cabbing although I have the equipment. In Michigan it gets pretty cold so it's easier to tumble in my basement than go out the the shed to cut and shape when it's 8 degrees outside. But anyway, keep up the great work and take care!! 👍👍

You can get a metal tube which ID is the right size of the glue stick cut to 8" say find a nut that will hold the tube straight up fix the nut to a metal sheet or block of metal by welding. You may need to weld another nut on top if one isn't another to hold the tube upright without movement then you need a metal funnel with the outlet hole able to go on the inside of the tube using a heat gun or gas torch heat the tube & funnel adding the used glue melting the glue letting it run down the tube. keep heating the tube & funnel up so is runs down. I have been able to make new sticks from old used glue. Or as another person has said you can get a hot glue pot & melt it in the pot. I am not sure if doing it from a pot if you would need to warm the stone as the glue would be a little cooler then out of the hot glue gun.

The only thing I see that is a problem with this method is the release part. Brittle stones or stones that are lamilar or fractured will leave parts of themselves stuck to the glue is in your first example. I use 5-min epoxy which does this sometimes but seems less likely. And of course dopp wax will do that too if you try to force the release.

Have you used this on opal? When I was a dumb kid and got hold of my mom's loose opals, I hot glued them to a ceramic cup. We could not get them off and ended up craking them even though the backs were polished to a high shine. It makes me sick. Lock up your gems if you have kids/teens. Anyway, I'm starting to wonder about using it for hydrophane opal since it won't soak in like superglue and won't soak in to a lesser extent like wood glue. The hydrophane doesn't like to be heated, but if the hot glue was cooled a bit, it would probably be gentle enough. However, due to the natural texture of hydrophane (it is like a sponge on the microscopic level), I think the hot glue would be even harder to remove from Ethiopian opal than from non-hydrophane material. I personally think it is probably a horrible idea, but if someone has done it successfully, I'd love to know how they got it off. Thanks so much.

Try putting a drop of iso alcohol on the hot snot when you want to take it off.
