- I like to use tools for thing they weren't necessarily made for. My Dad came up with this woodworking hack 10 years ago and I had to share it. If you ever need dowels or loose tenons but don't have a lathe then this wood tip is perfect for you. I'll show you how to turn wood dowels in 30 seconds with a tap and die set. Thanks for watching!

Awesome trick! Will definitely be using this one. The reason the dowel isn't 1/2" when using a 1/2UNC die is that the minor diameter of 1/2UNC thread is approx .4" roughly 3/8" after some sanding. If you want a 1/2" dowel, use a 5/8UNC die as that has a minor diameter of .51".
Yea this does work BUT I would never sand it when I use it in joinery. The roughness holds the gluing better. Learned this over 47 years ago from my grand dad. Thanks for sharing this.

He’s really got some great videos. Most videos take longer than necessary. If you don’t have time to listen then just click the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner of the video and when the menu comes up click on playback speed and adjust to 2x. Just listen closely.
Spent most of his time on his family history, then he finally made the dowel it was 1/8" shy! 🤦♂️. Forget "hacks" make a dowel plate!
Yeah, right off the bat, I recognized this is gonna take a while, so I just kept jumping forward to the real stuff. Some people love the sound of their own voice.
This is a dye tool, this is how to use it to make dowels, THE END! Why does everyone who makes a video have to give you their “life story” (and often not very relevant) before talking about and showing ‘WHAT WE CAME TO WATCH & LEARN”?! 95% of most RUclips vids can be cut down by more than half the length.

Nice trick for an emergency. But dowels are one thing I'd rather buy. Cheap, consistent sizes, smooth, easy to find, and I can get back to making my project faster.

Thank you Haxman, this is the perfect solution for rounding over some square stub ends of curved slats for fitting into round holes. The shape of the slats meant I couldn't just take them to the router table. I was stuck -- thinking I'd have to whittle 96 stubs by hand -- until I saw your video. Thanks for sharing!

It is a godsend to have people on you tube, like you, who are willing to devote their time to help others and find ways to save us a few bucks in the process. I always search for ways to make my projects easier and more affordable , plus you people have a lot of ingenious ways of doing things, thank you for your time in doing this for us novices.
Honestly, they "devote" their time in order to get views and make money. A lot of work goes into filming and editing videos. Those who post them are not usually doing so out of the kindness of their hearts.
Enjoy the time with your dad, I also enjoyed working with my dad . I lost him this past year and mom this year. I had the 68 years so I can not complain, but I still miss them. Make the best of the time you have. Thanks for the good instruction. Tommy

Great tip. I don't have a tap and die set, but years ago I had a few taps which I used to cut threads in oak, and then ran the fasteners into the wood. Some of the jigs I built 20 years ago are as strong as they were when new. I think I will pick up a set now that I have a use for the dies. Thanks!

This is also a great way to sharpen pencils for your kid at the beginning of the school year. I sharpened a whole box of 30 in like 2 minutes.

Great trick! I have everything needed. I wanted to learn ways to make home made dowels in order to make wood arrows for archery. Coincidently I saw you have a recurve on the wall at 0:14 on your video.
I accidentally came across this video and now I have an idea on how to make an arrow shaft. Thanks for the idea. Subbed.
I like this idea. Also, they now have a setup where you can turn your drill into a lathe, which is useful if you want to make larger dowels or ornate furniture legs without having to buy an expensive lathe.

This is the best idea I have seen to make dowels out of different colored and types of woods for projects involving pocket holes.. Awesome tip, thanks! Just made two 1m-long dowels with this method. Pro tip: Keep pushing hard against the die, otherwise you end up with a partially-grooved (screwed?) dowel :)
I have seen so many really cheap tap and dye sets at garage/yard/tag sales. A cheap set is all you need because its hardend for metal and its been used for wood. Great Hack indeed!
Good advice at the end there. No room for prima dona's. When I teach classes I'm happy to listen to good ideas from my students. As long as you're willing to learn, you get better and better.
I love learning a way to do something to where I say “Why have I never thought of that”! Not a carpenter but love making things! Great advice at the end, other peoples ideas or knowledge can make it easier even a bad/dumb idea can lead to a way! Yes, there are stupid questions.

Great Idea for making dowels. I would point out however, that plugs and dowels are different animals. Using a dowel as a plug will show end grain on the exposed surface. A plug on the other hand since it is cut across the grain, will leave long grain showing on the finished surface. Careful use of a plug cutter can yield a plug that is much harder to see from the surrounding grain. In some cases it almost disappears.

Ha, and to think I have been making wooden arrows by hand. Game changer.
Great trick. As a quick rule. A 1/2-13 die will make it 1/2” - 1/13” or .42”. A little less than 3/8”. Use the pitch as a fraction to subtract from the nominal bolt diameter. With a little care, you can get pretty close to what you want.
I run every plan past my dad, it is usually 70% changed (improved) by him. Shout out to all the dads that give up their Saturdays for the build, no matter how grown we get 😅

An interesting way, but I thought there was another way where the diameter is especially important - or where you have only short lengths of the right endgrain material. I read of a way involving a steel plate with a series of holes gradually getting smaller to the target diameter. You make the square stock the right thickness the take small pieces and hammer them through each hole, in turn, and each hole progressively trims the wood pieces down to the right diameter.

I needed white oak dowels for rot resistance and strength for an exterior door gate.
Does this work on really hard woods like ebony, or chippy woods like sugar maple and red oak?
