How to dop rocks (LAPIDARY) for beginners!

- In this video I am going to show you how to dop rocks. We are using a dopping station, dopping wax, dopping sticks, different stones, some water, and random tools to help with the lapidary prep process of dopping. The reason we dop rocks or minerals is so that during the polishing process, with whatever kind of lapidary equipment you are using, it is easier to handle. Sometimes the rough agates are a little small or awkward to handle or the cut and slabbed stones are too thin. This process fixes that! You can find the complete dopping station I am using in this video here: hitechdiamond.... Don't forget to use code AGATEDAD to get 10% off this unit.

I hope you all enjoyed this lapidary prep video, we dopped a bunch of minerals, including some Lake Superior agates, that I cannot wait to polish! We will have some fun polishing videos coming out in the future as well as some rock cutting and other gemstone related videos! Cant wait to share all of it with you!

Here's the dopping station I used in this video here: hitechdiamond.com/collections/dopping-supplies/products/dopstation-complete?aff=22 (use code AGATEDAD for 10% off)
Ordered this. Thanks for the discount my friend. Have a fantastic weekend 😀 😊 😎
Also I have been doing lapidary since 1966. One thing that I have recently discovered, is simply to use gorilla double face mounting tape instead of dopp. I was sceptical at first. But it does work.
Interesting!
🤣🤣 In Italian RUclips translated "dopping" with "doping" 🤣🤣 I love the doping stones! 🤣🤣
🤣
Love the variety of your posts!💕Still love the hounding best!😆happy hunting!!!
How do you take it off when you are done?
put it in the freezer for a few hours then pop it off, or put the stone back on the dopping station, while on, and let the wax heat up a bit using something to scrape off the wax before it gets completely heated up. I prefer freezer for rough stones and heating up and scraping off for flat backed stones.
Perfeito eu gostei muito. Bom dia meu amigo!
Great video. If the wax gets dried out can water be added to it?
The wax heats and melts, to reuse you just heat it back up
Grrr. I can’t get the wax to stick to the stone! I heated the stone the way you did. Any other reason it won’t stick? I don’t know the exact stone… just one I picked up. Newbie with a burnt finger.
Maybe get different wax. Sometimes the wax gets too old
@@AgateDad lol. I dug this wax out from the last time I signed up for a lapidary class at the local college… over 25 years ago! Lol they don’t even offer those classes anymore. I’ll order some new stuff. I’ve always wanted to do this but life kept getting in the way. No classes near me now. Thanks for the help. Been enjoying your videos and agate Ariel too cuz u both get so excited about the inside and rocks u find and that’s how I’ve always been!
Hey dad, my wife and I live in the northern suburbs here in MN.
Been watching your videos for awhile now.
You just told me the one thing that made my stick, stick really well.
I started off doing wax dopping but I've found a much easier way is a 16 penny nail and super gluing the stone to the nail. You can still remove them using the freezer or by heating the nail and it seems to be much faster and more secure than wax dopping
My dopping sticks are tooth picks. 😂
Nice!
this has always baffeled me, and never understood how "wax" can hold this stuff. But, I think there is shellac in the wax, and thats what allows it to harden,. thank you for showing these video, gonna get a cab machine here in the near future. Plus, gonna use dop on certain wands im working on.
What can I use, when I don't have a dopping station? Can I use a regular wax station and hardwax?
I had an idea for a episode for you. I just got back from the north shore where we found some great agates and brought home some Thomsonite in basalt host rock with the hopes of extracting some from the host rock. I started the process with a Ryobi/Dremel and a round head diamond burr. It works surprisingly well and faster than expected. I’m just learning as I go but was really excited when they cut into that basalt like butter.
Definitely been planning that one out too( I’ve had some kept tucked away with nice pieces and not sure how to execute it yet
That green superman stone looks oddly familiar... Lol
It’s yours bud!!
@@AgateDad have you already polished it?
Not yet
@@AgateDad be careful with it. It's pretty soft
Thanks! What material is it btw?
middle age men with backward baseball caps....
Maybe I should get one of these. The worst is when they pop off the stick. Do you think the frequency of falling off would be less with this method?
Hard to say, I don’t know what method you’re using instead of this. I have never had one fall off during polishing with this unit though. Usually find cracks at the end or the pop off before I start when I do my light pressure test
@@AgateDad Alcohol lamp, so the amount of heat can be quite high and tempering the opal can be risky.
@@bhutjolokia6990 The lamp should work just fine. Try mixing in a little red or brown wax with your green. It will add some holding power. 15- 25% should do it.
I have the same setup but none of my stones are sticking. Gotta try this out ASAP and also some new wax cause I think mine's pretty old. Thanks again for something I greatly needed.
Definitely try new wax, I believe my code works for 10% off too for that (agatedad)
Super lesson and show 👏 . Best regards from PL 👋
Really enjoy your channel! I see several people using dob sticks on their cab polisher, do they use them on their flat lap polisher. That’s all I have right now. Thanks!
I use it on my flat lap as well as the cabbing machine
Once you start polishing do you want to prevent the wax from touching the wheels?
The wax can touch, it just grinds away
How quick can you start working stones after applying dop wax?
I’ve done it within 20 minutes
That was so freakin informative.❤️
I was wondering how you did this. Thanks for showing us!!
How do you get them off?
I put them in the freezer and pop them off
Very good video and very nice guy , thank you
Thank you this was helpful!
Welcom in Morocco
🤘🤘
I think you misspelled More-Rock-O
Go over how to get it off the stick and the wax when you are done forming, please.
Will do in next polishing video!
Mine flew off in a rock club shop. So many cabinets and machines took me a couple of days looking and with the instructors help moving a cabinet to find it. Lol
Thank you for sharing this

Anyone know of any public gravel pits in stearns county mn?
What is the best wax to use
Hi,
Nice, Taylor. Thanks for such a great tutorial.
Thanks!
Once you are finished polishing to one side can you dip the site you polished and polish the other side?
A great little tutorial. Thanks for sharing.😷⚒
this is a great how to video! thank u!
Thanks!
Great dopping video.
🙏
Great tips and tricks 👌 👍
Thanks!
.😊how do you get wax off thank
freezer and pop it off
I’ve had lots of issues and I do exactly what your instructing here… not sure the issue.. my stones are much smaller maybe?😊
Bummer! What’s the issues exactly?
@@AgateDad the stone falls of the dob stick..
I finally bought a dopping station too, same one you have. I haven't had the chance to use it yet, but will use it a lot in the future. I think this is the second "how to" video I have seen on using a dop station. You will have to explain how you remove the rocks from the dop stick when you are done polishing the stone. I know how to. Michigan Rocks did a video on it a while back. But im glad you did one too. I love all of your videos. Can't wait to see what's next.
Stick it in the freezer for a few hours and then pop it off. Or heat up the stone and use something to peel the wax off
Yes I already know how to, but others might not. That's why I suggested explaining it in a future video. But thank you.
You forgot to add that to take them off, simply put them in the freezer just for a couple of minutes. They pop right off. Sometimes in the freezer.
Well looks like my “how to undop rocks” video is spoiled 🤣
Sorry. 😕
I’m just teasing 😂
Ok what wax brand?! My dop station even after an hour won’t melt my wax like this?! Brand new dop station, same one you have, and I’m using hi-tech diamonds wax they sell. Could it be that my house was like 65F? I’m so lost on why mine won’t work 😭
When did you get it? Did you reach out to them? Mine was ready to go in like 10 minutes lol
@@AgateDad hmm. It doesn’t seem to get as warm as I think it would. It was a gift from another channel but I might have to reach out and ask them about it.
Try getting new wax too, I had to do that once
@@AgateDad it was brand new wax 😭 I’m going to see if I can get a temp reading on it and message them. Maybe mine just isn’t getting as hot as it should.
Hi Rufotris! I think I've seen you around Reddit. Yes, it could definitely be the wax. I had this exact thing happen to me but I had the station for a few months before ever taking it out of the box so I was stuck. I thought the the cheap free wax was spent and reformed. Are you saying you've bought new wax from them since then and it does the same? It is the absolute cheapest per pound I could find, I'd say we now know why.
I ended up trying to use a cosmetic wax melter that has double the heating wattage and it still wouldn't melt! I tried new wax and now both stations work. (a coffee cup warmer and a single egg frying pan works great as a rock heater.) Kingsley North has dop wax at a decent price and if you need to mix in a little more holding power, they also have brown, red and black.
