How to dop rocks (LAPIDARY) for beginners!

  • In this video I am going to show you how to dop rocks. We are using a dopping station, dopping wax, dopping sticks, different stones, some water, and random tools to help with the lapidary prep process of dopping. The reason we dop rocks or minerals is so that during the polishing process, with whatever kind of lapidary equipment you are using, it is easier to handle. Sometimes the rough agates are a little small or awkward to handle or the cut and slabbed stones are too thin. This process fixes that! You can find the complete dopping station I am using in this video here: hitechdiamond.... Don't forget to use code AGATEDAD to get 10% off this unit.

    Also I have been doing lapidary since 1966. One thing that I have recently discovered, is simply to use gorilla double face mounting tape instead of dopp. I was sceptical at first. But it does work.

    How do you take it off when you are done?

    • @AgateDad
      @AgateDad  2 года назад +1

      put it in the freezer for a few hours then pop it off, or put the stone back on the dopping station, while on, and let the wax heat up a bit using something to scrape off the wax before it gets completely heated up. I prefer freezer for rough stones and heating up and scraping off for flat backed stones.

    I started off doing wax dopping but I've found a much easier way is a 16 penny nail and super gluing the stone to the nail. You can still remove them using the freezer or by heating the nail and it seems to be much faster and more secure than wax dopping

But, I think there is shellac in the wax, and thats what allows it to harden,. thank you for showing these video, gonna get a cab machine here in the near future. I had an idea for a episode for you. I just got back from the north shore where we found some great agates and brought home some Thomsonite in basalt host rock with the hopes of extracting some from the host rock. I started the process with a Ryobi/Dremel and a round head diamond burr. It works surprisingly well and faster than expected. I’m just learning as I go but was really excited when they cut into that basalt like butter.

    I finally bought a dopping station too, same one you have. I haven't had the chance to use it yet, but will use it a lot in the future. I think this is the second "how to" video I have seen on using a dop station. You will have to explain how you remove the rocks from the dop stick when you are done polishing the stone. I know how to. Michigan Rocks did a video on it a while back. But im glad you did one too. I love all of your videos. Can't wait to see what's next.

      Hi Rufotris! I think I've seen you around Reddit. Yes, it could definitely be the wax. I had this exact thing happen to me but I had the station for a few months before ever taking it out of the box so I was stuck. I thought the the cheap free wax was spent and reformed. Are you saying you've bought new wax from them since then and it does the same? It is the absolute cheapest per pound I could find, I'd say we now know why.
      I ended up trying to use a cosmetic wax melter that has double the heating wattage and it still wouldn't melt! I tried new wax and now both stations work. (a coffee cup warmer and a single egg frying pan works great as a rock heater.) Kingsley North has dop wax at a decent price and if you need to mix in a little more holding power, they also have brown, red and black.
