- How to Dop a Stone For Lapidary Cutting and Polishing -When cutting and polishing gemstones, you need a secure handle. Enter dop wax and a nail. I will demonstrate how to use dop wax and easily dop your stone for controlled cutting and polishing. I buy lots of my gemstones already cut but sometimes you need to alter your gemstones for your exact needs.
Thank you for the video. It has been a minute since I did any lapidary, but I am now inspired!
You are very welcome! I mostly buy my stones already cut but it is a lot of fun to play around and get custom shapes. :)
informative to the point
So glad you like it! :)
The comment regarding the Hot Dop Wax Burning made me laugh but it is so true and I have the scars to prove it. It's about the same difference as being burned by molten plastic. It just sticks to you and keeps burning until it has cooled and then you get to peel the wax off the freshly burned meat. Loads of fun and lots of swearing !
One of my first of several burn scars is on my thigh from dopping in shorts. I soon learned that an Apron is worth the small investment. It won't protect your fingers, hands or arms but it covers everything else. Besides, polishing can be messy so it is again, worth investing in a decent apron.
Ugh, you are so right! Safety first!! :)
Amazing info!
I am so glad that you enjoyed it! :)
Great video for a beginner! Thank you! How WOULD you dop an opal in comparison? Could you warm it in your palm or some warm sand or something like that? I have regular opal roughs and some Boulder opal and they're too small to hold in my hand.
Usually crazy glue is the best bet for heat sensitive stones like Opal. 😃
@@JewelryArts thanks so much!
@@elizabethbircher1753 You are most welcome 😃
What is the name of dop wax you use?
