Need a dop pot? Here is my affiliate link to the one I use amzn.to/3fgJbM8
Wax dopping a stone is used to make it easy for the stone cutter to grind the stone. When making a cabochon cut stone this is very important. It helps to make sure that the stone is cut evenly.
Most stones are dopped to a stick or nail.
Having a jasper or agate on a dop stick will also increase your success rate by helping you make a beautiful stone with a wonderful finish.

Good demo. Tip: I cleaned all the wax out of my dop pot and placed a small clean cat food can in the wax holder. The rim of the can keeps my stones from falling onto the wax while heating the stones. The wax still heats up and it is a lot less messy.
That’s a great idea! Love it. Thanks a bunch for sharing.😃
Looks like sealing wax. Amazing that this can grab on so tight! Great demo, and exciting to know this can be done at home. What a lot of fun is lapidary work!
Thanks, that was explained much easier than so many other videos.
I personally would not recommend the water cooling, especially for lap 101. I am an actual instructor for the Grand Junction Gem and Mineral Club. I teach beginning lapidary / shop safety class.
I feel that the water cooling method is more of an advanced lap type technique I would think that lace aggate does have a lot of internal stresses that do not all run concurrently.
When teaching people a new skill or technique like how to use a hammer they are going to look at everything as a nail, hence why I would frown on the water cooling technique.
I can recommend using a thick piece of steel something maybe three eights to one half inch thick to heat sink to.
That will pull a lot of heat off the stone. I would also recommend fluting at some point the dop wax with your thumbs like the end of a trumpet, it helps save on wax.
Some ideas.
Thank you for your tips on using the cabking, just a newbie now and your help is much appreciated
Thank you. Have fun with it. There’s no better way to learn. 😊
Cool watching this!
Thanks Jill :)
Would be so kind and let us know what are the 3 stones getting warm. Thanks.
Great vid, I ordered a wax pot like yours! Have a slant machine coming from Ebay, didn't want to get a Kab King yet! Just doing it for fun! Mostly into casting Silver but I collect stones for rings and pendants! Time I make my own cabs! Going to try Opal! Any tips!
The opals don’t like the heat from the dop pot. I use super glue to attached to a dop stick.
You can use baking soda to instantly solidify the super glue. Just sprinkle a little in the glue and it will stick the opal and the stick together. Put it under a warm lamp or just let it cure for ten minutes or so. Then you can start cutting.
Awesome video. How do you remove the Dop wax when finished cabbing the stone?
Good question! You can put them in the freezer and the stone will pop off. If that doesnt work I warm up the stone and remove it with a knife. Heres a video. ruclips.net/video/QxyKUsZ3Uu8/видео.htmlsi=P3XbcmXYhnDjyl1T
What brand of dop wax do you use? What diameter sticks is best for what size stone?
I do this the same way but my cabb keeps falling off after just a few minutes of work what do you think I need to do
Can you use this dob wax on turquoise?
Thanks for the videos! They're very helpful for me as a beginner. I got one of the dop stations like that and tried it for the first time last night. After 2 hours it still hadn't melted the green wax enough to stick to the dowel rod. It heated it just enough that I could squish it down in the container, but never melted past the grainy stage. I used brand new green wax, and put in about half a stick. Any recommendation how I can correct that?
That sounds like a problem with the heating element. It should be to hot to touch. See if you can return it. They are supposed to heat up to around 200+ degrees

How long does it take for the wax to totally melt?
Shabazz El MedicineMan about 10 minutes
What size is most comfortable with the drop sticks?
I like 6 to 8 inches. There isn’t a hard fast rule on that. Just make it long enough that your fingers don’t hit the wheel
my wax isn't melting like yours and it's been hours that this has been heating
Shabazz El MedicineMan Does it appear to be heating up at all?
How do you take the stone off the wax though?
Here is a video on that. ruclips.net/video/QxyKUsZ3Uu8/видео.htmlsi=P3XbcmXYhnDjyl1T
How do you remove the wax once the stone is finished?
I have a video on that. I have some people put it in the freezer and it pops right off. Don’t do this with opals.
@@GotchaRocksJewelryDIY Thanks!
How do you safely take it off the stone? you didn't mention that.
Hello you can put them in the freezer and the will pop off. Or here’s another way ruclips.net/video/QxyKUsZ3Uu8/видео.html
All the best
@@GotchaRocksJewelryDIY thanks for the reply
Can you reuse the dopp wax?
Sandy M. Hey Sandy, yes you can and I highly recommend it. Thanks for commenting.
Good point! Thanks for asking.
Can you reuse the wax?
Yes you can.
I have a question. Do you just put the stick of wax in the pot till you have enough melted, or break wax off the stick and put it into the pot? I'm confused by the directions that came with my dop station. It says to place up to a full 1/4 lb stick in the pot, break the stick into pieces so they don't melt outside the pan. I don't think I can break the stick.
Hello, I just break the wax sticks so they fit in the pot and keep adding wax till it’s about half full of melted wax.
