  • The stone has to stay on the dop in order to facet. But what do you use to keep it there? Wax? Superglue? How about both? Does it matter? Let's investigate!

That was really interesting. Ive seen all kinds of people on youtube that have their methods of dopping, and for those that arent faceting, just polishing their stones, its a rare instance, no matter what their methods, that as long as they put enough wax and the right kind, on their dop sticks, the stone stays until its removed. And you put more force, for prolonged periods of time with a regular stone and a flat lap or cabbing machine. I've not seen anyone having to use brute force to facet. If so, your doing it wrong with the wrong kind of stone! I think the trick is to use a dry dop stick to begin with, on a dry, room temp stone, and use the right kind of wax or glue, and a sufficient amount of it, and give it adequate time to dry or harden if using wax before puting pressure on the stone. And i wouldnt recommend leaving them in a cold work area, overnight, until you resume working on them. Wax especially. But given the normal lapidary or jeweler will not be throwing their stones, or dropping them, i think if it is dopped right whether its glue, wax, or hybrid, the stone should stay put until purposely removed. And your tests prove that! Thanks Patrick! Very informative. You always come up with the most imaginative ways of testing these things out! I love it!

I think far too often someone does something for a really long time and then attempts to do something new and when the new thing doesn't go well they blame the process rather than themselves.

Yeah my first time trying hybrid super glue the stone broke off, and I blamed the method. But it was a tiny stone and it fell off again when I just used wax, and I realized I was being too harsh on the glue.

why not try pistol hot glue in sticks, how does it hold, some people use it?

I'm wary of hot glue because it has more flex and less strength than CA glue, wax, or epoxy. However, if you were careful it would be possible. Some opal is so sensitive to heat and chemicals that people use Elmer's glue!

I'd recommend trying out Loctite precision super glue.

I've heard good things about it, but I'm terribly impatient and usually don't want to wait overnight for epoxy to cure.

@@DonohueLabs I know the feeling. You can buy accelerators for the glue to dry up, no personal experience on those though. But you dont necessarily need to wait overnight for the glue to dry up. Depends on the size of the piece, grit and rpm as well!

Enjoyed your testing. I have used the hybrid super glue-wax dopping method for many years with good results. For 'wax' I use 100% shellac flakes, easy to source, and works a treat. @roughcreations
