    I’m a Milwaukee M12/M18 tool guy, who wanted a decent oscillating multi-tool that was brushless. I ended up getting the Dewalt XR multi-tool in a kit. Probably others have done the same. Now I sit with the Dewalt multi-tool with Milwaukee coming out with their new M12 and M18 multi-tools...damn!

      @jami w I have actually used both of them ( the old M12 not the new fuel) and I the shape is more useful for my uses then the trigger. Everyone has their preferences for different reasons.

    • @zack6892
      @zack6892 3 года назад

      @jami w the auto load feature on Milwaukee is way better then the variable trigger for plunge cuts once you get used to it in my opinion. I was die hard Dewalt guy we’ve run the XR for years and years now I’ve been in the business 15 years and used it for a lot of them. The vibration dampening alone is worth switch if you use them daily not to mention the Milwaukee stays cooler and secures the blade better using two forms of tension. Don’t get me wrong still think the XR is a great tool but it’s dated until Dewalt makes improvements I’ll be switching over the atomic is junk and the XR needs better cooling, more power and more dampening. I’ve had trigger fail on multiple units although they MORE then payed for themselves I think the heat and dust egress played a big role in that. Hopefully we will see a flexvolt advantage multi tool one day and I’ll be back because I prefer Dewalt ergonomics but I think the Milwaukee are superior for the time being. I just wish the m12 had auto load I was kinda bummed when I got it but we bought the m18 once released and now replacing the rest of our old XR with them. Once you get used to the auto setting it allows for precise plunge cuts without having to make any adjustments and no trigger to wear out.

      Check which model you have.. the Brushless Max XR is the newest, with Variable Speed. I don't think the M12 can Touch the newest Dewalt model.

  • @pwhs8
    @pwhs8 3 года назад +18

    I love the variable speed trigger on the dewault vs the switch on the Milwaukee. Makes a big difference when trying to ease into a cut then letting it rip. Also as you pointed out the dewalt blade change is still superior. Perhaps the Milwaukee is better for finer more precise cuts? I love both brands.

    • @TheFunnyCarpenter
      @TheFunnyCarpenter  3 года назад

      Your right about the trigger being handy at easing into cut, but I find the overall shape to be a pain to maneuver. And the blade change is quicker, but overall more bulky and doesn’t take star lock blades.

    • @Ronofthedead07
      @Ronofthedead07 3 года назад +1

      The new M18 Fuel has an automatic mode that is supposed to mimic the same effect...but it costs $229 so probably not worth it on that alone. Unfortunately, they did not integrate that feature into the M12 Fuel version.

    • @zack6892
      @zack6892 3 года назад +2

      I think it’s worth pointing out the trigger is a point of failure for Dewalt though I have 2 in my tool box I need to send in. Although they went through hell before going out the XR lasted a few years the atomic less then 1. Both failed the same way trigger starts to cut out eventually not working at all.

      I just purchased the Milwaukee, and had been using the Dewalt XR for over a year now. The Dewalt change blade is faster..however… I realized I dont change blades often, the Milwaukee cuts are so much faster… Id prob make up the extra time changing the blade in just 2 cuts. This speed comes at a price… At least in my test… the Dewalt cut was cleaner at full speed, it just looked like the speed of Milwaukee was shaving too much material of the cut… dewalt was slower but cleaner cut

    • @histguy101
      @histguy101 2 года назад +1

      The Milwaukee has the variable speed dial right next to your thumb when holding it. You turn it on, and it's on, and you adjust the speed while it's going. There's no need for a variable speed trigger.
      Triggers and pistol grips on grinders and jam saws are super tedious and probably cause arthritis

      I was expecting mine to have an early death, because it gets abused nearly every day, and very early on I noticed the grip gets hot, obviously they must have put the mosfets in the grip. I thought the electronics were going to crap themselves, but it's been rock solid.
      However I hate the ergonomics, I hate the excessive vibration, and Dewalt has the worst battery vibration mitigation out of any tool brand, so if you don't watch out you risk melting the plastic where tool and battery surfaces contact each other. The vibration can also cause the battery contacts to wear out and no longer make contact. This issue happened to my Flexvolt reciprocating saw after just under a year of use, the contacts got so worn that it started having errors, running intermittently, and alternating randomly between full power and about 1/3rd power. Cleaning the contacts with Paslode cleaner worked for a while, but eventually it began to only run at that 1/3rd speed, and only if the battery had 3 bars. My suspicion, due to how the Flexvolt tool is part of the circuit that rearranges the battery to 54v instead of 18v, is that it was only drawing from 5 or 10 of the 15 cells in the battery. Thankfully it was repaired under warranty, however I am less likely to use the tool now, and have bought a cheap brushed recip saw, to take some of the load off, as getting caught without it really messed up some of my days.

      @@Patrick-857 that's weird... I have both the oscillating tool and 60 volt flexvolt reciprocating saw. I have not experienced any of the issues you speak of. To be fair the DeWalt can lock the power switch on at three different speeds when it's awkward to keep your finger on the variable speed trigger. I can honestly say I was expecting it to be a little gutless. I was really surprised with how fast it is. I had been using a corded Dremel unit. Some how the M12 was way faster then the corded unit? The blade on the m12 was super super thin which I suspect aided its performance significantly. I will say that the tool is nice ergonomically but it is a bit long also it’s really easy to bump the speed setting on it accidentally. If you are in a certain platform and you are thinking about buying an. Oscillating, don't buy another platform. They are both good. What I love about the dewalt is you can use the hex key to change the blade in the atomic if you don't want to use the quick blade change and it has the variable speed trigger so you don't have to change the speed manually. The Milwaukee has much better lighting.

I hate the switch I hate that I can’t set it to a certain speed and focus on the cut. I hate the vibration after one minute on high because it only locks on high and your hand will be shot (although perfect for vibrating air pockets from concrete and epoxy and maybe some other things) and the blade change is I guess decent compared to some other multi tools but what I noticed is it’s slightly loose. So when in use I noticed loss in precision and also hard to explain but loss in cutting power as well because of the movement. But everyone should score that deal!

    So i got the Dewalt 315K coded one and this Fuel m12 OST to decided which i keep and which i return.
    Comparing the both, M12 did have minimum vibrations close to the battery, 1 - 10, 10 being the highest, I would say close to the battery was 1. Close to the front of the head and middle of the tool, vibrations were around 2-3.
    Dewalt was around 5.
    Ergonomics: Tool is bulkier than the Gen1, looks and feels more like a M18 Gen1. Put the 2.0 CP battery in and very easy to handle rotating in any direction or high or tight areas. BUT put in the larger XC batteries, tool gets heavier and difficult to hold in tight areas due to the battery sticking out. Gen1, tried in the store, very impressed with the size.
    Dewalt, i found easy to handle and i have medium hands.
    Runtime: I got roughly 12 minutes of runtime with a 2.0 CP battery. I can confidently say, you will get around 20 minutes with a 6.0 XC battery but i did not try that. Reason below.
    Battery (Inserting and removal): Inserting the battery is unlike M18, understood, but you have to insert the battery at an angle and then push it in for a snug fit. Removal, this was one of the main reasons i returned it immediately and went with the other. Battery is extremely difficult to remove. 50% chance that the battery clips will break resulting in a useless battery. I did not take my chances with the 6.0 XC.
    In terms of durability, too early to say whether this tool will rise to the top 3 oscillating tools list, but the area beneath the lever can easily be exposed to drywall dust or wood fine particles. Looking inside, you will notice a steel part lubricated to smooth out the movement for releasing the blade. It is exposed. Imagine if dust gets in there. Mechanical failure. This part should have been covered.
    Overall, I personally was looking for a tool where i buy it and forget it. Well the yellow brand does it in terms of reliability. Yes it is slow, but at least i can get excellent runtime out of it. And not just less than 25 minutes.
    And before you say i am a yellow team guy, i own only 2 yellow brand tools, corded drill and now this corded OST. I own a m12 impact, m12 ratchet, couple of PACKOUTS, corded sawzall and plan to get the m12 impact wrench.

    I think we’re seeing Milwaukee begin to take the m12 line a little more serious. M12 is about all a person needs in a light Industrial application. Battery tool technology has only taken over because of they’re convenience. Size, weight, and ergonomics definitely factor into my thoughts. Longevity is king though.

      There were a couple things you could have done to make the M12 battery easier to remove. One is to partially fill the inner nooks (into which the barbs fit) with some tough glue (such as LocTite GO2 glue). That way the barbs won't lock into the nooks as tightly. This first method is reversible. Another method is to partially file away a little bit of the barbs. This second method is non-reversible. I The aim of both methods is to prevent the barbs from locking into the nooks too tenaciously. Or you could do both solutions to make the battery easier to remove.

In fact the Dewalt giving you the option of variable speed makes it a better choice. No need to flip around trying to get at the Dewalt trigger when you can just lock it on. Plus the blade change alone makes the Dewalt the better buy

    This review seems really bias. You praise Milwaukee for vibration resistance and ergonomics which i get, but heavily criticize Dewalt for it's cut speed that falls short just a few seconds behind the M12. On top of that, one of dewalts best features (quick change blades) you barely give any credit for and blow off the results of it being obviously better. As a contractor, I own the bigger brother M18 oscillating saw, and while I do love it, I see huge advantages in Dewalts quick change and precision trigger over Milwaukee. If we are using examples from your video, I much rather take the extra 2-3 seconds of cutting time then 20+ seconds changing blades.
    Give credit where credit's due, don't let your video be completely bias.
    Milwaukee M12:
    More Ergonomic / Lighter
    Good Cutting Performance
    M12/M18 4 Lyfe!
    Dewault
    Quick-change Blades
    Precision Trigger
    20V 4 Lyfe!

      All excellent points! I am extremely biased towards tools with better ergonomics. If a tool is bulky and I don’t like using it, I usually pick it apart. The blade change on the Dewalt is bulky and realistically not used very often. Give me the sleek design of the M12 and the ability to put any type of blade on there tool free. Thanks for checking out the video and I really appreciate your comments:)

      @@TheFunnyCarpenter I actually agree with what Justin says here. I use the Dewalt multitool often and the quick change blade feature could be renamed to quick change angle, because we/I use it for exactly that, quite a lot. to shoot it down is simply to say that you don't use it yourself which is true to only you.

    Impressive power on the m12. I do like the quick blade change on the dewalt. Be nice to see a test with the m18 fuel version

      I borrowed the old M18 and working on a review for next week comparing it to the new M12, after that I will probably get the FUEL M18. Thanks for the support:]

    Glad i payed the extra bucks with milwaukee. Altho I do have a dewalt mini 1 hand skil saw and a ryobi cordless drill, and i have zero problems with them at all. I honestly might even prefer the ryobi cordless drill cause its much lighter than the Milwak drills ive held which helps alot, plus its hard to make a sh1tty cordless drill. But everything else i have, every other power tool i own that requires more stregnth and durability, like sawzalls, hole hogs, grinders, multi tools etc are all milwakee and i wouldnt want it any other way. They are the best

    I also noticed you put the worst battery that dewalt ever made put on a real battery on the one's with the guage it makes a huge difference

      Ya valid point. Both the batteries were the cheapest ones available in both the platforms. I don’t have any dewalt batteries so I had grab some cheap ones. The test cuts were pretty minimal and the batteries were fully charged.

    Does the Milwaukee allow securing the blade at anything other than 180 degrees? Like will it allow 90 or 270, or any other angle that the star will allow?

    Next time you could try putting a timer on the screen and stop it exactly when the test is done. Not a hand-movement-to-stop-timer later. Especially if you're counting secs/millisecs.

      Excellent point, I’ve only recently figured out how to do that! My low tech method was pretty lame.
