As the new millennium dawned upon the United States, the hybrid car emerged as a ground-breaking innovation heralding a cleaner future. While not particularly exotic or luxurious, it captured the hearts of Hollywood celebrities with its eco-friendly image, and everyday consumers embraced its remarkable fuel efficiency during a period of escalating gasoline prices. However, the spotlight has since shifted to electric vehicles (EVs). The company once hailed for popularizing hybrids faced considerable backlash from environmental organizations for its sluggish embrace of EV technology and its resistance to stronger climate regulations. Yet, EV sales in the U.S. have hit a snag, transitioning from a mere 25 days of inventory turnover at the start of 2023 to 72 days a little over a year later. Meanwhile, hybrids are experiencing a surge in demand, outpacing even traditional internal combustion vehicles and earning accolades. In February 2024, hybrid sales soared five times faster than EVs. Some automakers, despite previously committing to an all-electric future, are now scaling back EV production in favor of hybrids. However, hybrids are not as effective as EVs in curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Supporters argue that hybrids serve as a viable short-term solution. Legacy automakers, who once pledged to transition entirely to electric, are now shifting focus back to hybrid manufacturing. Although EV sales in the U.S. reached a milestone in 2023, with a record 1.2 million units sold, there are signs of a slowdown. This deceleration is partly attributed to Tesla's aggressive pricing strategies, which led to price cuts throughout 2023.

I'm trying to see if hybrid cars will dominate EV's in future and will EV's disappear or just become prominent in the micro-car market? Are hybrid cars net-zero standards compliant? Are there any drawbacks with hybrid cars that makes ICE and EV's a better option? To me it feels like Hybrids (definitely NOT plug-in's) will rule the Net Zero drive.
