FYI, the McLaren doesn’t really have a battery. It’s called a hyper-capacitor, which acts like a battery, but can discharge and charge way more quickly and efficiently
A quick Google search for McLaren Speedtail hyper capacitor turns up only joke conversations about future cars with flux capacitors driving the motors - everything else I can find suggests it's a lithium battery. For what it's worth, people really underestimate just how fast lithium batteries can charge and discharge if specifically built to do so because we're so used to batteries optimised for energy density (ie total range/duration of operation between charges), but there's plenty of designs and chemistries built for very high immediate power delivery instead, a common and reasonably accessible one is high performance quadcopters which use lithium polymer batteries that run from full to empty in 5 minutes during a race. These types of batteries aren't very desirable in everyday cars and sealed consumer electronics because they have smaller capacities and don't last anywhere near as long, but a short cycle life isn't that big of a deal for a hypercar that spends most of its time in a garage.
Never did I ever think Marques would review my exact Corolla on this channel 😂

Great video, buying a hybrid these days is smart. We considered the Prius "Prime" AWD; 40 miles of range in electric only, and a relatively powerful (compared to previous iterations) 2.0L engine that should be plenty reliable and prevent range anxiety. Another well implemented hybrid solution is the Corvette E-Ray; supercar acceleration, AWD, stealth mode to get out of the neighborhood, while weighing the same as a BMW M240i xdrive.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. I see all those comments like "I'll have a 2.0 M budget for cross shopping". This is not a review of those cars and it is not meant to. This is a video that explains WHY in 2024 there are a lot of hybrid cars in the market even if the world is going full electric and we can already see electric cars just about everywhere. These categories of vehicles exist because they satisfy specific needs present in specific target segments of customers. Nice and informative video, now i have a better understanding of the topic!

@@MrPink- the narrative shift currently being pushed by big oil and crippling legacy automakers to convince gullible fools and governments that fully electric isn't going to happen is actually entirely hinged upon zooming in as closely as possible. Marques with all due respect - maybe stick to tech, or review your sources for info.
The Corolla can’t be driven just via the ICE, as the wheels are directly connected to MG2 (motor generator) so any engine torque must go through MG2 to reach the wheels.
Also it has 2 motors, one connected directly to the wheels (MG2) and one connected directly to the engine crank (MG1)
MG1 and MG2’s power are blended in the gearbox through something called a power split device which is how the car is able to control the gear ratio, depending on how fast either of these are spun, and in which direction, to create under drive, direct drive, overdrive, reverse or neutral.

The quality of this video, The cuts, and the Musics all prove why MKBHD is totally in a different category from other tech reviewers
My turbocharged Suzuki Solio SS (Suerper Slow) does the same thing. It drains the battery significantly when accelerating but charges very quickly when decelerating.
The battery dropping to 74% on the pull was not from the car actually using a quarter of the battery. That is voltage sag, which is the voltage of the battery temporarily dropping significantly when under high load.
Actually that's probably real, the Speedtail battery is only 1.64kWh and the electric motor can consume 225kW, which means that at full tilt it could burn through the battery all the way from 100% to dead empty in only 26 seconds. That pull was maybe 4 seconds, factor in inefficiencies and reserve capacity and that's pretty close to the expected drain (these types of ultra high specific power batteries don't suffer voltage sag anywhere near as much as slower drain chemistries when loaded, it's specifically designed to deliver those voltages at those power levels).
I drive a Corolla hybrid and I really like it. Great to see MKBHD showing the tried and true some love!
I have the gas Hatchback and it is fantastic! I get 40+ on the highway. 🎌

Hey Marques, Great video! You brought up that wireless charging is very inefficient because it's an induction charger. I worked on EV wireless charging previously and if I had to guess, that charger uses magnetic resonance instead of typical induction wireless charging that phone chargers use. You're right that induction charging would be terribly inefficient, hard to position correctly, and needs to be practically touching the base charger. But most if not all EV wireless chargers use magnetic resonance coupling instead which allows much greater efficiency at misaligned and further distances than tradition induction. You can get up to 94% efficiency with magnetic resonance coupling which is around the same as wired charging!
Although in practice it's usually less, but still way better than induction. I find it pretty neat, and definitely worth watching a video about how it works! I’m biased but I definitely think it can be added for fully electric cars, some already exist!
Wow did not know that.
I have no doubt that'll be the future. Sucks if you have to park your car on the street though.
@@Cyba_IT unless they put wireless charging under the roads 🥴
@@valoeghese I wonder if we'll ever get to the stage that we have solar panel roads that charge cars. Maybe in built-up areas.
I wonder why they go down these inefficient routes instead of just sticking a power cord on a roomba and teaching it where to plug into the car whenever it arrives, and carry the cord away when it's charged.
Whoever did the graphics for this deserves a raise. Great job.

Happily enjoying my Toyota Highlander Hybrid as someone who wanted a Tesla as their first ever vehicle. EVs are currently going through a guineapig testing stage, with critical issues showing up all over the place, including Marques report of having random steering wheel issues with his Tesla, and there's still the range anxiety problem. But maybe my next car will be a plugin hybrid, since currently, I still have to fill up gas at some point, even if I drive slowly in cities.

Listen to the sound if the doors opening. It sounds like a tired, old motor cranking an old gate or something.

Personal opinion:
My parents got a DS7 plug in hybrid as company car, weights 1.8 tons, has a 15kwh battery. It literally consumes 12L of gas per 100km and even more sometimes talking about just running on gas. If u charge it, it can run for 24 km approximately before having to recharge it again, so just enough to make it back and forwards from work on one day. They can charge it just at work and not every day. It falls in the parameters that Marques advises: get a plug in if it is a car that already weights a lot.
A BMW X1 or VW T- roc consume 4 L of fuel per 100km (tried them myself) just for reference. They r a bit smaller but not a lot, still comfortable cars.
My opinion is that these plug in hybrids are no sense, cause they have a small battery which makes u need to recharge them daily and on gas they have a really high consumption. Even saying that u are able to recharge it daily when u will go on a trip it will consume giant quantity of gas.
Truly appreciate the Autofocus series!! However may I please suggest that you use the RED. The video dynamic range from the current setup (smart phones) are quite bad compared to your other reviews using the RED.

13:00 If you see 75% just after the acceleration and around a 100% after you done accelerating, then that is something called voltage drop. The voltage on the battery drops instantly due to the intense use from the engine. So, what you see on the dash is the battery voltage level when it's heavily loaded, whereas in a no-load or if slightly loaded, it will indicate way higher battery percentage.
