I think the fact that you have never really see a true heritage boot with zero drop like this before perplexing. I do wish a version with the original african ranger outsole but the build of these existed. But this is a good direction for barefoot boots and really paving the way.

Gods I wish Jim Green'll keep making these long enough that I can afford a pair. I've been waiting for this style of boot for so long! I don't think the contradiction is nearly as counterintuitive as it seems. I'd love a pair of boots that is protective, durable and long lasting, but that also doesn't give me "arch support" and a heel, and finally gives me enough toe room. This looks like just the thing.

Just got my fourth pair of Jim Green's - thanks to your recommendations over the years - and it was a custom designed pair from their custom program on their website. Really hard to beat JG price and quality on CUSTOM boots! And more to topic, I LOVE the rationale, thought, and detail that went into these Barefoot African Troopers (BAT). Gonna try real hard to wear out my first four pairs so I can justify yet another purchase of JGs! The BAT seems like a perfect boot for camping; single layer of leather dries - relatively - faster when wet. I will say I've added Finnish army Jalas FX2 insoles from Varusteleka to all my JG boots in place of their factory insole.😎

I purchased a pair of White's Boots Centennial Walking Shoes about 5/6 years ago. They were basically the shoe version of the Centennial Hiking Boots. They came with standard block heels, but when I took them in to get resolded, we decided on the Christy wedge as a replacement. Those soles tended to wear out fairly quickly. He said that the Vibram Newporter would last longer, and ground down the christy wedge flat on one side to accept the thin Newporter sole. The wedge still has a bit of lift, but a shoe company could make a thicker mid-sole that was completely flat to make it zero drop. It wouldn't me minimalist due to the thick sole, but would satisfy the zero drop enthusiasts. They could even use the Munson last to add to the benefits of the zero drop. Both Nick's and JK seem to offer something similar to the Munson Last, so it's been done.

I have stupid feet. Low arches, wide, different sizes, and so on. I've tried many different brands and usually all of them fuck my shit up in some way. I bought these on a whim for a gig I was working on in northeast Alabama for an engineering company. My thorogood safety toe boots, fine for construction sites, chewed my shit up bad out in the woods. These might be the most comfortable footwear I've ever worn. No cap. Pounding asphalt for miles, 500 ft elevation changes up and down easements, even soaking wet. For the first time in my life I have a comfortable pair of boots. Thank y'all.

I’ve had mine for a little over a month, I wear them for work I’m a cop. I was looking for something lightweight and primarily waterproof as I live in an area which receives a decent amount of rain in the fall and puddles have always been an issue when you work 12hr+ shifts. I also have allot of experience with different types of boots as I was a rifleman in the Marine Corps for 4 years.
    Pros:
They are very very lightweight comparable to the Bates Tropical seals boot I used to wear.
They are very comfortable after you break them in of course, the first week is hell as this was my first barefoot shoe/boot. You can really tell how weak your feet are after switching to barefoot shoes, but after the muscles in your feet become more developed you get used to them they become the most comfortable boots you’ll own.
    Cons:
They’re hot, I’ve found my feet to be extremely sweaty after removing my boots.
There’s excessive rubbing on the back of my right heel that becomes noticeable when I’m driving for hours.
    In the middle:
They’re mostly waterproof, more waterproof than most boots I’ve tried. Not completely though, I got in a foot chase this past Sunday morning through a cement factory plot and inevitably ended up stepping in a puddle that went just right above the top of my foot. I instantly felt water seep in and soak my sock. However they aren’t like other boots where if you barely get a bit of water splashed on them you’ll feet will be soaked.
    Conclusion:
So far I’m happy with my purchase, and
I’ll continue doing updates the next one will be at the 6 month mark and another at the one year mark.

    • @sschoon86
      @sschoon86 5 месяцев назад +2

Usually it’s because of the “heritage” part. There are some advantages to having a heel, which were good advantages to have back in the day as a logger or whatnot (still can be useful today, just depends on what you are doing). Wedge soles are not exactly zero drop, but tend to fill the niche of a flatter sole that is more comfortable for flat ground.

Got a question for you. I have nearly flat feet. Having good arch support in my boots is imperative if I'm going to be able to wear them for hours on duty. I really like these boots, especially the Fudge color. I don't spend a lot of time barefoot or in just may socks at home; I prefer to have something on my feet. How do you think these boots would fit me and do you think i'd be comfortable wearing them around casually (can only wear black combat/tactical boots to work)? Thanks!

    Love these videos!
I would love to see you do a loafer, like weejun’s or sebago, even a boat shoe like sperry’s.
    Best regards

These are my dream boots because I'm a barefoot person and on top of that there's a surplus store I wish I knew the name I feel horrible now because they deserve the plug I think it's the commando store but every rare occasion, they have a hook up in south Africa with a dude that hand makes to order only the African paratrooper boots and I got the version that leaves old looking footprints in dirt. A harder to track sole. They are such amazing quality. Thin leather but damn good quality. The only problem i have is the sole since I've worn barefoot for years. I need these and have high expectations from having hand made south African paratrooper handmade boots I love other than not being barefoot. I bet anything this will be the best of both worlds.

I need to get a pair for Jim Green boots. Ive been wearing a pair of Thorogoods for work for about 3 years now. Tho i didn't work very consistently until this year. They are probably due for a resole, but they are getting a bit tore up in some spots. Im wondering if a rough out is a better option for sheetmetal, since I work with sharp metals that slice through the top of the grain. Id love a PNW boot, but I don't want to wait 2 years for them. Ill figure something out.

These look great! I will be going with a pair of these for upland hunting when I cam get my feet into some. Please think about a safety toe with shank version for us barefoot loving tradesmen. Nothing on the market that i can find besides some Japanese made boots that make you look like you ate a ninja wannabe. Thanks

What's bizarre to me is that these boots are actually cheaper than a pair of vivo forest esc's, which have a tendency to delam and are not resoleable. ....is it December yet? 😅

I was expecting to get a notification for these today. I can't decide between these and a custom pair of AR8's with the OR African Ranger sole. When I saw that I would have to wait till December for these I ordered a custom pair of AR8's. Maybe when these are offered by the JG custom shop I will get a pair.

Only real alternative to those seem to be Austrian brand GEA. Mostly stitchdown and some side stitch models. Not sure they have 10 inch boot at the moment. But this ones look great

I've noticed that Jim Green sells the barefoot boots in both styles up to size 14, but you only have the anvil sole and boot breaker listed for up to size 13?

Do they come in different widths? I usually wear a size 11.5 FF in Nick’s. I’m hoping these will be wide enough for me.

I really dig the look of these and may save up to get them. That being said, i cant be fooled into thinking of them as "work boots"
On your recommendation I bought Buffalo AR's and couldnt be happier with them. Replaced the insoles with dr scholls and can go all day on concrete construction sites. I think these would work well as "leather converse" when im on my free days wanting to wear something unique and comfy. I dropped a wooden board on my toe wearing the AR's and felt that one for weeks! That celastic toe stiffener doesnt do anything to protect the toe box. When it comes to heavy work, I gotta take some liberties with comfort and pull on the steel toe redwings for some shitkicking.
TLDR, I want to skate in these 😂
