Currently wearing my Jim Green Barefoot Ranger boots. Fricken love this! Wide toe box, zero drop, full leather, boots. No frills, just quality materials made into a quality boot. I wear them almost every day. Only took about a day of wearing to break in and have only been getting comfier every since.

I'm wearing the barefoots daily also. They are a game changer as almost the same construction and quality but zero drop and no steel shank means they are just 100% comfortable from the moment you put them on. They are the perfect comfortable shoe during an urban rainy season.

Thanks for the recognition and attempts at correct pronunciation of our language and people! I have been involved in volunteer anti poaching work and expedition hiking. . . I can confirm that the South African bush is no joke, had a company politely ask me to not buy their boots again after I sent them photos of what their top product looks like, barely surviving (but never to be worn again) one expedition. . . I have had burnt wood pierce straight through the bottom sole of high brand working mountain boots! Vibram soles, they don't last 7km in the bush, trust someone who spent the money and tried.

@@bellinghambaseball2The other commenter read my mind. Definitely condition them. I really recommend against wearing them without conditioning first. The African buffalo leather is so ridiculous. It’s so stiff and uncomfortable. I’ve have put a couple intense hikes into them and they still aren’t fully broken in. Conditioning them first helps tremendously.

I do not consider myself to be part of the "youtube police" but as an Afrikaans speaking South African just allow me the following constructive comment. To use the term "boer - farmers" might be confusing as it might come across as farmers farming with "boer" when in actual fact "boer" is the Afrikaans word for "farmer".

Clark's Desert Boots were originally designed for the British Army during the desert campaign in North Africa during WW2. They were practical in the desert and more comfortable than the standard boots of the era.
After the war, they were sold on the open market, and Clark's sold them as well; people bought them for similar reasons, and the style became popular, and it remains popular to this day.

This is definitely the problem with Jim Green. You can’t stop at one pair. I can’t even decide between three different models for my third pair. Once you have one, you just want all of them. And they have such great variety, all of it useful for different things and all perfectly designed and reasonably priced, that you can totally justify every purchase. Combine that with some amazing RUclips presence and Jim Green will own the world by next year. You heard it here first.

Hi Michael, I was born and raised in South Africa, and speak Afrikaans. To assist you with the pronunciation of "Boer", just the same sound as when you say 'boot' but with the 't' replaced by an "r" at the end. I love my Jim Green boots and have a few different ones. Reliable, value-for-money boots and once you have worn them in, it is super comfortable. I have the Razorback, African Ranger Barefoot in Houston Brown, Black Shoelie, and Suede Vellie in Chestnut. I still want to get the Stockman as a quick slip-on boot and really like the look of the Numzaan boot as well. I used to try out a lot of different boots, shoes, and sneakers. But they do not last very long and these days they do not fit my wide feet that well. Jim Green solves all of those problems.

For a more durable option than trailrunners, you can also look at boots like the Jim Green African Ranger boots, which is an evolved version of veldskoen, or field shoes. Essentially trailrunners before trailrunning was a thing. A lot of militaries in Africa were really ahead of the 8-ball on boot design, since they realized pretty early that heavy duty construction just slowed you down, and that boots had to be lightweight and not inhibit the wearer first and foremost. The OG veldskoen vellies partially contributed to the modern idea of sneakers and trailrunners.

Don't judge this boot off this exact version, IMO there is a far better way to get these boots albeit with a little added cost and wait time. Get them custom made (roughly $40 more), get them with the upgraded veg tan leather mid sole, and get the toe stiffener removed. Unless you plan on kicking the crap out of stuff and need toe protection, the toe stiffener is not necessary and just makes them less comfortable, and by removing it your toes will be able to wiggle totally freely without any hot spots, and they'll still have 2 layers of leather at the toe so you'll get more protection than something like sneakers. I opted to keep the steel shank because I wanted more arch stability but you could remove it and get a much more flexible boot if you're into that. Basically what I got ordered is my own version of their Barefoot African Ranger but with the standard sole and drop height and they absolutely are like an overbuilt sneaker.

Been wearing African rangers for my primary general shoe for a year and thinking…. Thinking…. Thinking more……
    5 months. A year and 5 months.
They’re about due for a refresh. The sole is getting pretty worn but they’re still a good shoe.
Probably the best boots I’ve ever owned. I’m new to quality boots but they have sizes to fit my big feet.
I’ll probably get these resoled not long after I get my next good boot which I think will be Thorogoods?
The Jim Greens needed better insoles for me. After that, they were amazing.
The cap toe is pretty tough. I’ve dropped tools on it and it took care of my feet. I’m no construction guy but these have seen enough work for them to be used in the yard, shop, and working on things in my opinion.
These are work boots that look surprisingly good in my opinion.
I wish I could find something close to these in price and quality made in America.
I’d also probably buy them again instead of anything else if they didn’t start removing all the size options and seem to be clearing them out of Govx.
I’ve had bad luck with some other “affordable” options, so I’ve been really happy with these.

I currently own two pairs of Jim Green's, the Vellie and Outback Chelsea. They have very quickly become my favourite shoes and I plan on moving to Jim Green's for my hiking boots, I just need to figure out what pair. They break in quick and get comfier with every single wear and are built to outlast you! Would highly recommend these shoes and boots, especially if your a ZA local like me!!

I've really been getting into Red Wings recently and these feel like they'd make a great complimentary, lighter weight and more warm weather appropriate alternative. Sadly it doesn't look like they retail here in Sweden.
Will definitely ask my friend from SA to have a look around for me next time she's going down to visit. Just have to figure out my sizing ..

My JG African ranger BF are hands down my favorite footwear I've ever owned. I don't like to take them off. I'll probably have them make me an ar670-1 pair so I can have a pair when I'm in uniform, too. They take a min to break them in but 💯 worthwhile

Perusing their website now. Couple questions:
    1. Which ones work for wide feet? *Just got to 9:15; answered.
    2. Are these easy to re-sole if I’m in the states?

I like what you said about the toebox not being high enough! I have skipped through these Jim Green boots and opted for Caterpillar as a result of the flat toebox.

I’m 300 miles into my first pair of African rangers and my only complaint is the adhesive used on the outside of the stitching has failed. That’s on me however, these boots weren’t made for Alaska. Highly recommend for anyone into forestry.

Boer is just the Dutch word for farmer, it's said close enough to boar. Afrikaans was originally a pidgin language of Dutch and a few other languages though mostly Khoesan. The Boer people were the descendants of the Dutch who lived in Southern Africa and eventually declared independence. For a time the English recognised their right to self governance but the two boer wars happened and they were messy. Generally both were cause by a combination of complicated politics, the dissolution of the East India Trading Company, England wanting to control trade routes, and discovering diamonds in them there hills. If you like history it's worth looking into, while it wasn't the final blow for Imperialism (that was WWII) the two Boer wars was where the dial really started to turn from Imperialism towards globalism.
