The Saint is an ITC mystery spy thriller television series that aired in the UK on ITV between 1962 and 1969. It was based on the literary character Simon Templar created by Leslie Charteris in the 1920s and featured in many novels over the years. He was played by Roger Moore. Simon Templar was essentially a Robin Hood who stole from criminals, but kept the money.
His nemesis was Chief Inspector Claude Teal who considered Templar a common criminal no matter whom he stole from. As a result of the strong performance in the US of the first two black-and-white series in first-run syndication, NBC picked up the show as a summer replacement in its evening schedule in 1966.
The programme therefore ended its run with both trans-Atlantic prime time scheduling and colour episodes. It also proved popular beyond the UK and US, eventually airing in over 60 countries, and made a profit in excess of £350m for ITC. With almost 120 episodes, the programme is exceeded only by The Avengers as the most productive show of its genre produced in the UK. As with The Avengers, the colour episodes were originally broadcast in the UK in black and white, predating the advent of colour transmissions on ITV.
THAT is Shirley Eaton, the very same "Gold Painted Girl" for those of you who care.
Yes she was JILL MASTERSON in GOLDFINGER
I KNEW I’d seen her somewhere else!!!!
😻
@@jonessoda4me1 You hit the jackpot
AND, in the very first episode of The Saint S01E01
R.I.P. Sir Roger Moore. You were my favorite James Bond. I loved watching you as The Saint when I was a child growing up in Mississippi.
Absolutely u are right he best in Ivan hoe and The Saint he is the first offered to act as bond since he was tight schedule with Saint could not commit and Sean Connery took anyway for me he is the Best James Bond with a cheeky naughty sexy handsome charismatic actor Rip Sir
I been watching him since Ivan hoe as a small kid and grow a little to watch the Saint from kid I admire his acting
I remember "Ivanhoe" and "The Saint". I liked him in the OO7 films, but prefer Connery as Bond. When I saw Moore, it always seemed like Simon Templar in the Secret Service.
When I was a kid I liked the way Simon Templer talked to the television viewer in the beginning of the early episodes.
I wonder why that idea never caught on ?.
That 'talking to the audience' bit is also known as 'breaking the fourth wall'. It has been used in other television programs, movies and live plays. The commonest variation is the protagonist 'narrating' the action (the Stacy Keach "Mike Hammer" program comes to mind). Depending on the subject matter and the actor involved it varies as to appropriateness and audience reaction.
It worked well for Sir Roger (Mr. Moore at the time) and the Saint.
One big reason is it is a handy plot device. A lot of the early Charteris stories that were used in the TV series were written some time before the mechanics of TV story telling evolved. It also helped Roger was playing a character who caught the eye straight away. On RUclips there are some great radio episodes of The Saint with Vincent Price as Simon Templar and you can see for yourself how storytelling evolved from the radio to tv age.
@@BritishRaceCaller Mr. Braddick, you bring up the evolution of storytelling (on television). From the time of "The Saint" (Roger Moore) and "Peter Gunn" (Craig Stevens) and others, I find television writing and storytelling to have suffered a significant drop. Much like movies, too much emphasis is placed on special effects and such (car chases, explosions, shootouts) and this seems to be at the expense of plot lines and scripts. The special effects are of a higher quality, but the plots and scripts are much simpler.
Such is the way of things.
Roger Moore - in his greatest television role. RIP :(
What about The Persuaders with Tony Curtis?
This was before Roger took on the role of James Bond.
So it turns out James Bond couldn't save Jill Masterson, but Simon Templar could!
Miss u Roger. U were great and so handsome plus the theme was so catchy. 60s and 70s tv themes were the best. I enjoyed The Saint so much. TV was a gas back then🤓
The Orginales Alway This = Best Ewers ( Thanks )
I recognize the Blonde from Goldfinger, she's the one who helps James Bond throw Goldfinger's gin game and she ends up getting painted gold
So...she's "good as gold?" (chuckle)
The theme is sung by Barbara Moore at Elstree. The voice heard here is more like an instrument. She stated this on BBC 5 14th Dec 2016.
This episode of “The Saint” entitled “Invitation To Danger” is one of my favorites!
Back in the days when you could sneak up on someone while smoking a cigarette
Wearing a very nicely cut suit! 😂😂😂
Shirley Eaton was really hot. A genuine Bond girl.
Yes she was!!!!
@@angelosantaniello4113 yeah and james bond
indeed
I think I have joined an exclusive club. That is the grateful women whose lives have been saved by the famous Simon Templar
Roger and shirley with that bond connection
Simon Templar Roger Moore the master of class!
I loved this show when I was a kid!
As a kid I loved this show!
Now he has a real Halo. RIP Sir Roger you were the best
For all the Saints, who, from their labors, rest
Before Sir Roger Moore was James Bond he was the infamous Simeon Templer alias the Saint alias Sebastian Tombs.Rest in Peace Sir Roger Moore..you will be missed.
Roger moorer began as a maverick, a Saint, and a Bond. my favorite Bond
terry tyler Don’t forget Lord Sinclair of The Persuaders.
Wasn’t he also Ivanhoe?
terry tyler more fun than all the others, the franchise has lost its sense of humour
RIP Mr James Bond.
And Mr. Simon Templar.
and Mr Lord Brett Sinclair.
oui...it's better .

skirts365 Ohhhh dear..someone has a problem..
For me it's Sean Connery up, down and all around as the best James Bond ever. However, as a young teen after reading Connery was leaving the role I was hoping that Roger Moore would take his place because I absolutely loved him in The Saint. My favorite part was the opening episodes of The Saint when he would look up at the halo over his head.

Lots of comments over last 4 years where people recognize Shirley Eaton from Goldfinger, but nobody recognized her from the very first episode (S01E01) of The Saint from back in the black and white days.
I barely remember this show. My family lived in Hawaii, it was about 1970/71, I was about five years old and when this show came on at night, my parents ordered my sister and me to bed. I think this was one of the shows that my sister and I would sneak out of bed to watch from around the corner of the living room, behind our parent's backs. I kind of remember the theme tune and definitely the halo above the character's head. I kind of remember the shadow of a stick figure with a halo appearing over the body of a bikini-clad woman lying on a beach.
Templar was nothing but a kinder Bond.. No wonder Moore adapted to his role so well..
Actually, Simon Templar was a modern-day Robin Hood. He did possess a steely edge.
RIP Sir Roger!
For the curious (like me), this episode is "Invitation to Danger": www.imdb.com/title/tt0693483/
R.I.P. Sir Moore!!!!!
The name's Templer, Simon Templer.
Vocal on the theme by Barbara Moore, who later went on to arrange the fab Brass Incorporated version of At The Sign Of The Swinging Cymbal!
Simply great...
...And the best Bond ever
The Saint-----one of my childhood heroes! John.
Likewise, John. Still is, come to mention it.
"The world needs a 'Saint'!"
Rest in peace in peace Roger Moore
Future Bond rescues former Bond girl. And with Julian Glover in this episode there's a future Bond villain.
Not really a 'spy' thriller. The Saint was a gentleman adventurer and more of a private detective - without all those cumbersome licenses - than a spy.
Best described as "The Robin Hood Of Modern Crime"
@@williambabyak1094 I do remember that from the books. And Sir Roger (Moore) made it interesting enough to start reading. In the books he drove a "Hirondel". He switched to a Volvo (P1800) for the TV series. I was gratified that a later Volvo sports car was used in the movie version. Not to mention a familiar voice doing the newsreader in the final scenes.
@@OldManMontgomery You should have seen my s#*t-eating grin when I heard the newsreader for Radio Oxford!
Julian Glover who plays Ramon Falconi worked with Roger Moore again as the bad guy in the bond film FOR YOUR EYES ONLY.
Shirley Eaton....what a great pair of legs!!!
What a lovely lady, period, chum!
Oh My That takes me back !!!
Now that's coolness...
The very lovely Shirley Eaton @ 0:45. Went on to be Goldfingers victim of course.
Andrew Ford - she was actually in Goldfinger a few years before this episode. :-)
In the lengthier end titles music the middle part incorporates the whistled Saint theme by the George Saunders movie character. Neat touch by Edwin Astley, Pete Townshend’s former father-in-law.
That musical phrase was composed by Leslie Charteris, creator of The Saint.
@@williambabyak1094 Was it? Cool. And clever. If he got rights money for use of the melody.
R.I.P Sir Roger.
Female voice in the theme is Barbara Moore, later of The Ladybirds.
It was some years ago and I was watching a WWII documentary and in a short clip, they showed a bomber in one shot. It was a British Lancaster bomber. What I immediately noticed was the art work painted on the nose of the plane. It was 'The Saint' halo stick figure in exactly that walking pose, with the 'hand' stretched out. And above the figure the words written out: 'The Saint'.
SInce then, I've had no luck tracking down that footage or finding what doc it was in. But I saw it plain as the eyebrows on Roger's face! Anyone else see it? (I mean the doc, not Roger's eyebrows, of course ;) I'd love to know the story behind it. Perhaps Charteris saw it during the war, or knew someone on that plane, or was on it himself? I don't know. But the
Charteris started writing the Saint in 1928... He drew that drawing himself for the cover.....
You may have found it by now, but I found this image. i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss351/Lancaster-Archive/WP%20Source/Unknown-saint.jpg (If the link doesn't work, just search up The Saint Lancaster Bomber and you'll find it on Google Images, Third Result)
I also have seen a photograph of an RAF fighter pilot, curled up napping in a leather armchair, on ready alert during the Battle Of Britain. Drawn upon his life vest was...you guessed it...the sign of The Saint. Our hero Simon must have epitomized the national fighting spirit.
Rip Best actor Roger Moore 😎🌟🖤🙏😢🥺
Selalu menunggu film ini saat saya kasih anak kecil.
The Saint on BBC between December 1992 and April 1993.
At 3:35 the copyright credit line shows 1967 at the end.
Is that Jill Masterson from Goldfinger?
Toure' The Gatekeeper! Yes. In fact the actress Shirley Eaton who starred in many classic British films of the 50's and 60's.
Oh yes it is.
What a babe
Good eye!
She's hotter here
I never realized & maybe you can check on this . But Roger Moore actually bears a a striking Facial resemblance to Steve Reeves. Except for the beard. Look at the Hairstyle ,cranial structure . Even the shape of the jawline & eye color & eye shape. I'm surprised nobody ever considered it.
R.I.P.: Roger Moore
In the same year when 007 first film came out
I used to love this show as a kid in Kenya. Does anyone remember the episode where a character was killed through the telephone?
The Death Game
Jill?
Classic.
What are the instruments used in this theme? Is the main melody a Theremin?
Barbara Moore's voice.
She actually looked pleased that he was having a go with that guy after he saved her butt.
FaeryChild11 Maybe because she knew he wouldn’t cover her in gold paint
Wish that Star Wars bit would do one!
Roger Moore was awesome as the Saint!
ima sample this
Like a drunken brawl on rollerskates
Oooo Shirley Eaton ❤️❤️
The Saint was filmed in colour? Or was this clip 'colourized'? I only saw him in B&W up here in Canada. :(
The first four seasons of The Saint were filmed in black & white, the last two in colour. So this is a genuine colour clip.
@@209PH last three seasons.

Before James Bond he was the saint
She's covered in paint. Gold paint.
There was badass, then there was this.
Future Bond and Former Bond Girl.
I like Shirley Eaton, I would like to see more of her. Is she dead? But the series bored me rigid as a kid and seems even worse now they're repeating it. Roger Moore's character was so one dimensional.
Which episode is this?
I liked Roger Moore as
Simon Templer and James Bond Why was Simon Templer called the Saint
And on the Episodes did any
Other characters refer to
Simon Templer as the Saint?!
I was just thinking it’s Jill Masterson! Sister of Tilly Masterson........ 😇😅😂🤣
Where's the rest of the story? Ugggg, this is so frustrating!!!
Wow in the thumbnail she looks just like Cameron Diaz.
Simply class apart. Shirley Eaton biting her lip. 😊
