Stingray is a British children's Supermarionation television series, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and produced by AP Films for ATV and ITC Entertainment between 1964 and 1965.
Its 39 half-hour episodes were originally screened on ITV in the United Kingdom and in syndication in Canada and the United States. The scriptwriters included the Andersons, Alan Fennell, and Dennis Spooner. Barry Gray composed the music, and Derek Meddings served as special effects director.
Stingray was the first Supermarionation production in which the marionette characters had interchangeable heads featuring a variety of expressions. It was also the first British television series to be filmed entirely in colour over its production run.
tingray, a highly sophisticated combat submarine built for speed and manoeuvrability, is the flag vessel of the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASP), a security organisation based at Marineville in the year 2065.
It is capable of speeds of up to 600 knots (1,100 km/h), while advanced pressure compensators allow it to submerge to depths of over 36,000 feet (11,000 m), enabling cruising to the bottom of any part of any of the Earth's oceans. Marineville is located somewhere in California, on the West Coast of the United States. In the case of it being under attack, battle stations is sounded and all the buildings and vehicles are sent down on hydraulic jacks into the safety of underground bunkers, protected by enormous steel and concrete shutters.
The base lies 10 miles (16 km) inland, and Stingray is launched from "Pen 3" through a tunnel leading to the Pacific Ocean. The alerts "action stations", "launch stations", and "battle stations" are sounded by a rapid drum-beat (composed and recorded by series composer Barry Gray) that is played over Marineville's public address system. This is how GREAT TV was in the sixties - start with a massive explosion and work up from there! What an into!
"Standby for Action!" "Anything can happen in the next half hour!" I just love it. Great show. Great memories.
That "Standby for action!" makes me wonder if Freddie Miller "borrowed" it years later to open Georgia Championship Wrestling.
I was 12...wonderful to watch again.. 💯
Would be a great ring tone
You knew shit was going down when you heard that!
Ah yes, I remember Standby for action, anything can happen in the next half hour with a great thrill, could have been yesterday not 56+ years ago!
"Anything can happen in the next half hour." It has been 55 years since I last heard that- I must have been six years old. Amazing to see it after all these years. And in color! And the "Maria" song. So many of us share this as a vivid early memory. The Andersons made magic.
Great comments
Ditto
I always loved that Maria song at the end.
I don’t care Troy!!
Gerry & Sylvia Anderson, made children's television so exciting for us 60's kids.
They were together from 1960 to 1980. 1981 he married Mary Robins
Gerry Anderson was a genius. These programs were just incredible.
I love the commanding , yet reassuring voice as well as the drums. So iconic. "Stand by for action." We are about to launch Stingray.'" " Anything can happen in the next half hour." Classic
I really enjoyed all the violence in these shows. Loads of missiles, explosions, bad guys getting blown to bits, puppets heavily sweating, drinking scotch and smoking. Simpler times.
That is so funny and true!
Yes C1V1L WAR could not stop laughing at the above comments yes all true as above and it is amazing a kids TV programme in 1964! Explosions, sweating puppets, drinking scotch and smoking love it! All natural during simpler times. I am still around decades later and enjoying it in 2021.

@@adams4374 Yes Adam S yes funny and in tune with above comments as kids TV at the time with real life and life experiences as a kid at time found Stingray 1964 very mature with romance with scotch plus everyone smoked. Standby for action! etc. Yay Good times!
Ansett 727.
I’d like to see an x rated version of it ..
@@opencurtin Love it DMC, with Bongo Drums banging in the background... yes Stingray had romance, jealousy with subtle hints of sexual tension!
Ansett 727.
Anderson's use of music was a world away from other kids shows. Hugh productions with orchestras and catchy songs. A couple of them made it to the Top 40 radio playlist. Having Hank Marvin and the Shadows as part of the shows was pure genius.
At 61 this opening sequence still excites me WOW
AWESOME opening.........Gerry Anderson had a talent for creating opening sequences that would hook kids right away. This opening was almost an episode in itself. Loved the show as a kid.
I love how sneaky badguys and spys all sounded like Peter Lorre back then... God bless Gerry Anderson for making being a kid in the sixties so much fun..the whole show was made of cool toys and dolls.
Marina and Atlanta were real "dolls".
Fantastic title sequence. Anything can happen in the next half hour. Wstching this with a bloody great smile on my face. Classic of its time but still worth watching now
I was born in the 1950s and loved all of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson’s stuff. My dad, 97 when he died, still used to say: “anything can happen in the next half hour”. A great tribute to the Andersons!
One of THE most exciting and dramatic openings to any tv show before or since-no wonder I loved it so much as a little boy in 1964.Brilliant!!!!!!!
I coudnt put it better myself
One of my earliest memories was watching Stingray in 1964 aged 3.
How can you not smile and get excited when watching this? I watched them all as a kid, have UFO on DVD. Still watch Thunderbirds on METV Sunday mornings . God bless Gerry and Sylvia. I love how intricate the sets and all there gadgets were. Terrific. Thanks for posting.
Got teary eyed. Gerry Anderson and his work was a big part of my childhood!!
Add ne to the list.
Agreed. TV GENIUS
I agree also
and me
Kevin, me too. I remember as a young child Whiteleys Department store in Bayswater displaying Gerrys puppets in their Christmas grotto.
Please bring this back, the young kiddies would love it,actually so will the adults xx lovely memories
Half of it would be censored for the snowflakes.
This is one of the most incredible openings in TV history bar NONE.
totally agree, its bad arse
It definitely stirred serious excitement in this impressionable former nine year old kid when the series started airing in my hometown Cleveland about 1966.
Just hearing those drums as a call to action sends a chill down your spine.
Yes Far better than the wailing sirens that everyone has nowadays.
I defy anyone not to get excited by that opening titles music...... It's amazing.
I was always amused that a military's Red alert alarm was belly dancing bongo's! I actually performed the closing song in my singing act years later. I just changed the words slightly and people thought it was a real song
I'd forgotten just how utterly wonderful this was. Thank you.
I have several albums of Stingray and Thunderbirds from my childhood living in England from '65 - '67. Marina is one of my favorites, but I collected all things Thunderbirds from ages 7 to 9. The music and talent of Barry Gray were exquisite. He captured the era beautifully. I would love to go back and live that time again.
@Elizabeth Lilley you can go back and live that time again any time - thanks to RUclips.
I was born in 1990 but i used to watch all the re runs of Stingray and Captain scarlet as a kid. I used to absolutely love those shows, of course Thunderbirds as well, but watching clips of Stingray bring back so many memories.
Fantastic music production. You just hear the mastery that was put in both beginning and end credits
Thanks Gerry!!! You and your shows were with me when I was a kid and now. Thank for all the wonderful memories!!! RIP
When I was around 8-10 years old, used to watch it in a 14" B/W TV way back in 1979-81 in my hometown in Malaysia. This was our evening 5pm show with Tea and anything my mum prepared for teatime. Those were the best years of my life. No more Aqua Maria, no more the teatime, no more mum preparing for teatime and mum is no more .. Enjoy your childhood and parents, please let your children have a childhood memory. Childhood doesn't last forever ..
Godspeed, Sylvia Anderson, and thank you and your husband, Gerry, for your imaginative and exciting visions of the future.
Supermarionation is woven into the very fabric of my life, nothing but warm feelings any time I see any of the Gerry & Silvia shows.
Incredible how in the Stingray world all species of fish only swim left & right, never towards or away from the camera 😉
Just wonderful!! My favourite when I was a kid. Everyone was into Thunderbirds but Stingray was for me. And what a cracking intro. The Andersons were simply amazing.
I loved watching this when I was a kid. That theme song and the opening sequence was so exciting. I am surprised to recall how much it still gets me going!
Was part of my childhood.
Thanks to to the Anderson's et al.
Always in my heart.
Thank you.
what a show, fantastic kids programme in its heyday,so much better than the rubbish we get nowadays,r.i.p. gerry anderson you bought so much joy to us all
As a child this gave me Hope. I didn't see puppets but characters in science fiction. The Musician's so Beat for kid's ears marvellous
Talk about iconic, there's the earliest images of my life playing out right there.
Still looks brilliant.
Anderson genius
💘
Love the closing theme of Maria, brings back memories of the music of the 60's
No intro at any time can top this ,THE best ever and this is coming from a captain scarlet fan!
One of the best opening themes of any action show.
amen! ,,,good name,...broadsword calling dannyboy c;
The best mate!
The Stingray shows were the best. As a kid I really looked forward to them and enjoyed them so much. Good memories.
Aquara Marina is still a hauntingly beautiful song. Thank you for the upload. I used to watch this and Thunderbirds as a child. Fondest of memories. Very grateful. These are classics. And I could listen to Aqua Marina day after day. Wish I could go back in time.
Sounds a little like Athena by Frankie Avalon.
Yes agred the song was beautiful I didn't think I'll hear it again @ I do miss those prog. R.I.P sylvia
So beautiful❤🎶🎶🙏
Don't forget Fireball XL 5 and theme song. Loved it.
I remember first watching this late night/early mornings on my mom's tv with the sound off so I wouldn't wake her up. I've been recently been watching it and couldn't believe the awesome opening music! So swinging!
Great opening and closing sequences and themes! Making Sam a paraplegic was a stroke of genius too.
I loved Stingray when I was a kid..a lot of hard work was put into these kids shows..no CGI then..thanks Gerry..
That brought back some great memories! I loved the show when I was a kid. The Andersons' attention to detail was amazing.
Anyone who dislikes this, needs their head feeling. It is absolutely brilliant! How can anyone dislike?? Thanks very much, 'TeeVees Greatest' for posting this video, beautifully clear picture too. Well done. ☺️
4:11 That architecture is beautiful. What an awe inspiring intro! At my age I can only imagine how large this would seem to a child... they might forget to breathe!
Maybe it was me when I was a kid; whenever I hear the ITC introduction I get excited because I know it was going to be an action show.
Fireball XL5 baby!
This intro never ever fails to raise the hairs on my arms, thanks Gerry.
Loved this show when I was a kid. 50 years later, I think the intro music is terrific. ("Anything can happen in the next half-hour": what a great line!) It's nice to hear that Marina song again. Thanks for posting this!
I'm 68 years old and grew up with watching stringray and the ThunderBirds miss both of them
I loved this show as a kid and would rush home from school to watch it. I am told that I would sing Aqua Marina around the house; I had pretty good musical tastes even at six years old! And, you know, it still sounds good!
Amazing Theme and Intro it stayed in my mind since i first saw this as a Kid nearly 4 decades ago !
Where have the years gone? Reliving our childhood. Only had a black and white TV back then.
I saw Stingray in 1965 & 1969 and finally when it was screened in 1976 I saw it in colour.
@@kiwitrainguy Yes our first colour tele, 1973.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those wonderful days growing up in London, England watching these shows! Loved them all. Stingray/Joe 90/ Captain Scarlett/ Thunderbirds etc.
R.I.P Gerry Anderson
ufo
@@vicsaul5459 Yes, UFO also but that was live action right?
That took me back to my childhood.....Troy hasn’t changed from how I remember him.
"Anything can happen in the next half hour..." Love it!
As kids my brother and I used to respond by saying "...and it usually does."
And I still say it !!!
What memories! This was my favorite of these shows. I remember acting out episodes with friends in the playground of my elementary school. I haven’t seen anything of it since, nearly 55 years!
Has the pleasure of visiting the APF studio in Slough on a few occasions. The live fish seem swimming in the underwater scenes where in a huge, thin tank that was only an inch or so between its sides. Everything behind it was done in dry conditions.
The next thing you'll be telling us is that it was made with puppets but who'd fall for that ?
You need to watch this on a week day at about 5pm, the time i would have watched in the early 70's.
I bet we can all remember the theme tunes, yet wouldn't have a clue what was on tele yesterday.
GOD bless the legacy of Gerry Anderson and his production team for help taming mankind with their gift and talent and going the distance to help make my young "babyboom" life more enjoyable.
Stingray was always my favorite Gerry Anderson show.
Man..what an era to be a kid in..stingray..captain scarlet..Thunderbirds...and who can forget The Champions..??!!! Alexandra Bastido as Sharon..!!! Christ..her and Marina done it for me..!!!
It's sad but their is no more talent left capable of this kind of movie craftsmanship .
I fell in love with Marina as a kid. Things haven't changed after hearing this song again. Sigh!!!!
I was in love with Troy Tempest. My first love.
Was Troy doing the dirty on his wife with Marina?
@@_Too_Late To the best of my knowledge, he wasn't married. Marina and Atlanta were friendly rivals for his attention and affections, and supposedly, he couldn't make up his mind...just yet(lol). The theme over the end credits certainly seem to indicate that he decided in Marina's favor, though; I felt a little bit sorry for Atlanta, when she was looking at Troy's picture. Tugged at my heartstrings, although there were probably plenty of men in the WASPs who craved some attention from her. 💖😊
@@DavidBDavis-lz7bt Maybe Phones had a chance! Lol!
At 10 years old, I never understood the ending credits--with the woman swimming in the deep ocean. I was truly mesmerized by the puppetry. Thanks for sharing!!
Stingray was the coolest looking sub ever. I had one for the bath as a kid.... wish I still had it.
I’m proud that John Livesey Eccles aka Barry Gray came from my hometown. I grew up watching and listening to shows created by the Andersons with music by Barry. Stingray was one of my favourites. Black and White television in those days.
Loved this as a kid and adored the theme song.
Love the opening theme music!!!!
Barry Gray's music was superb and it was a huge part of the success of these 60s british puppet shows. The Thunderbirds march has a life of its own and it's on the top level of popular British march music. The best music associated with films and TV is so much more durable and evergreen than the films themselves.
Wildwood - Totally agree with you, Barry Gray had a real genius when composing for TV and film.
Wildwood -- Yes indeed! As a kid when Stingray came out, I was besotted with things like Saturn V rockets, and Telstar bringing Mr. Kennedy live to our living room in London. (Yes, why did we always put the telly under the window where a fault in the high voltage circuits would set fire to the curtains? But I digress).
Stumbling upon Troy T. and friends fiftysomething years on, what stuns me here is the sheer oomph of the musicians! Wow, I'd love to be able to hear and SEE these guys performing. While not dissing the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's groundbreaking Doctor Who theme, I'm blown away by this performance on traditional instruments.
BTW: From about 1:00 -- Love the music's "Simon Templar meets the Pink Panther" feel!
second thatc;
@@leelinden8107 so true. telly by the curtains. must be a throwback to early stage and cinema,..flcker show,,..curtain call !!. love the fire hazard. spot on c:
What memories of my childhood, such wonderful times!
I'm nearly 57yrs old I can remember the all of Gerry Anderson programmes fantastic to be hear the themes again memories of the day
I love these. Amazing how they would make all the special effects. I love all the marionette series. I have them all on dvd.
I don't know if I imagined, or dreamt it, but I believe that when the BBC showed this in the UK, they had to over-dub the intro dialogue to "anything can happen, in the next 20 minutes", because of the lack of adverts (so the total running time was shorter). :) First time I've heard it in "stereo". Brilliant.
No, it was always " in the next half hour " and it was never on the BBC it was broadcast on ITV
The best intro to any TV show or film EVER! Fact lol 😊
Aqua Marina
Haven't heard this song since I was 5. Beautiful song
Always wanted to hear it again...I'm now 54😔
linda woods Heck, I miss it too ... and I'm almost 43 ...
I'm 45 and heard it for the first time. I'm a sucker for those kind of tunes! I vaguely remember watching a puppet series back in 1975 in the military channel in Panama as a boy, but can't pinpoint which series it was. The thing is, when I saw this on Pluto TV it caught my attention completely and my mind sort of picked up on some reminisce from my childhood. I plan to watch a lot of these puppet series until I finish them all.
Luis Donado There's a black female Character in one of these, Thunderbird, Stingray, Joe 90, Captain Scarlet, I'm sure there was I've been looking, I wanted to put it in a you tube video MAXINE WATERS, LOL I'm positive there's one looks like her
I watched these shows when I was in elementary school back then. The Aqua Marina song was hauntingly beautiful. Sometimes at school I would get a bit homesick for my mom and for some reason I would think of this song. To this day I still asscciate it with her. Lost her last year at the age of 91. First time I had heard this in years. Sometimes you tube is a very good thing.
Maxine Waters??? Obviously a villianess. That might narrow your search a bit...
This & Fireball XL5 were the shows of this sort I remember watching in the very early 60s in Northern California. Anything to do with space or ocean exploration/adventures & I was all in as a kid. Definitely a different time. This clip brought back memories. Thank you so much.
So ingenious! Loved these shows when I was a kid! Wait…still love them!
Wooow ,my childhood memories i use to run home from school to watch this my house was 3 block's away from school,.. i remember running home in the rain /my black and white tv sittin on the floor as a kid doin my home work thanx mom i miss you ..2-5-20.cashmere.ps can you cry and smile at the same time; Saturday morning..... 💯🎧..
can not describe how influential these shows were to kids back in the 60s, me included. So many kids went on to become engineers, astronauts, etc. Me I got a BS and MS degree in engineering and math. Was always curious how things worked. Was a captain in the Air Force. And my story was not unique
..."anything can happen in the next half hour"...sign me up!!! And those drums - better than "Wipeout"!!!
The best Toons in Cartoons was Johnny Quest. You just can't beat them drums...
Master Chief -- Actually, isn't beating the drums the whole point?
It's a bold choice, frenetic bongos as an alert siren. I have got this image stuck in my head of a stoned hippie sat in a room filled with cushions and lava lamps... A tube comes out of the wall and leads to a collar around his neck. The alarm is sounded and speed is pumped into his system as a pair of bongos rise out of the floor in front of him. He sits bolt upright and his pupils turn to pin prick as his hands blur over the skin drums. For half an hour.
@@jazzfan6 I get it but no-one else does ;)
agree, also, great on hawai five o. great era, check out conga player on star trek original!
Extraordinay work 56 years ago and still nowadays.
When the Sci-Fi Channel first aired in 1992, I recorded the episodes of Stingray and Captain Scarlet in the middle of the night, b/c those shows would aired 6:30am EST (and I'm in CA). I could always hear my VCR click on, and rewind back to the start of the recording so I could watch it while I ate breakfast and got ready for work. And I'm a teacher so sometimes I would take the recordings to school. My kids loved them!
Obviously it was in black and white on television when I was a kid,{I'm 60 now} my elder brother had a painting set of stingray and to watch the colours come to show what it was like in colour was pure magic for me.
One of my fave shows, used to watch it on Friday night before my weekly bath...ah, those were the days,
Wow takes me back to when I was 4 years old
One of my earliest memories is of watching Stingray on a 17-inch Zenith television while playing with a wind-up toy train in Sioux Falls, SD. My other early memory is looking up the isle of a North Central Airlines DC-3 when my dad was transferred from Sioux Falls, SD to Lincoln, Nebraska. The flight was from Sioux Falls to Omaha.
great childhood memory ,jerry anderson was well ahead of his time a pure genius with his creations .
What a fantastic production for a children's programme.
Anybody else find Marina super cute? I’m 58 now. Music took me back to a time of wonder. I was in Nova Scotia Canada.
I remember watching this along with Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet with my mom when I was little. Man, I feel old =P Great upload, though. Lots of great memories. Thanks.
The first woman I fell in love with was a mute puppet. This is probably where I went wrong.
I know the feeling, Tintin won my heart. She hasn't aged a day.
Her looks were taken from Francoise Hardy.
I wish my wife was a mute puppet.
@Nick Martin *Ha! ha! ha! She was!*
I always preferred Atlanta. Still feel sorry for her.
It was a great show every week brings back memories now just listening and seeing a clip of the series it is well done
I loved it as a kid and I still do
The drums at 3.50 are amazing
Mum worked on this show and her name appears at 5:23 ... this was one of her favs to work (moreso than the more popular Thunderbirds).
Simon Baldock Stingray was always the best.
Was she a Puppet Operator or Wardrobe?
That is really cool, Simon - I reckon it must have been a real privilege for your mum to work with Gerry and Sylvia. x
Simon Baldock That is so good to hear, Simon.
great story, that must have been a job in a million, working with these dudes everyday, wow
Gerry Anderson was the Walt Disney of the UK, back in the day. I watched Stingray as a kid. I often watched it at a friend's house. She had a color TV, I didn't. Amazing what they managed to do with puppets, models and water tanks, no CGI. It look a lot of creativity to pull this off. It still looks good after all these years. Later, I was a fan of the Anderson's other shows, UFO and Space 1999. The models of ships started looking fake though, especially in Space 1999. By now, American TV and movies had caught up with effects, and had put out Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. Audiences no longer had the same suspension of disbelief. Probably why Anderson and company quit. They couldn't compete any more.
Nothing to do with not being able to compete at all. His divorce and other issues had a lot to do with things, not like he suddenly gave up or anything. Take a look at his works after Space 1999 to see he did many other projects. Better than just guessing shit.
I was wondering was there a documentary on the people who made these programs?
@@sandrasanders706 Quiet a few, try this one:

This and the rest of the Gerry Anderson's series are a tribute to British ingenuity and the ability to make brilliant things on an absolute shoestring budget !
i remember watching this show when i was a kid , good times
Can you smile and cry at the same time ? I was, watching this..It was my favorite, just that hint of romance knocking at my door. The villain was a good take off of the horror actor Peter Lorre, so scary. Marina was so 60's and a take off of Julie Christie . The Children today are fobbed off cheap. Our tv then was amazing. They are missing great stuff. This was great. Thank you.
I have Barry Gray's from Amazon Music on my playlist which covers most of Gerry Anderson's productions. That Aqua Marina gets me all the time.
The kids of today would probably laugh and shake their heads if they looked at the old Gerry Anderson puppet shows, but we know differently!.
Absolutely loved that show, what great sound tracks, not the garbage you get today
These shows defined an era and our childhoods. I feel sorry for kids today...
I'd totally forgotten the Stingray song but as soon as I heard it, all the lyrics came back to me!
