  • This is the most serious of all the legendary maestro's compositions & the thematic variety is full of contrasts of mood & rich with chromaticism. The structural form of his first movement follows the traditional "sonata form" with a rather dark but majestic main theme followed by an energetic development. He takes a page out of Mendelssohn's tricks by creating an almost unnoticeable transition into the beautiful & tranquil 2nd movement. The standard tempo format for concerti is: fast-slow-very fast, & the maestro follows that very formula with a furious finale replete with demanding virtuosic passages finally ending it with an exclamation mark of a "molto furioso" arpeggic variation on the opening theme of the first movement. Take note how he revives the majestic opening theme like a silver threat throughout all three movements thus giving the work a satisfying balance & cohesion. The character of this work seems to intimate a life full of struggles & obstacles the maestro had in a world which was reluctant to accept his beloved instrument & ends in triumphant victory & vindication.
"I submit that it is the performer who will gain respect for the accordion by the manner of his/her performance" Anthony Galla-Rini

This is incredible. I've only dared to imagine a piano and an accordion dancing musically in accompaniment with one another. But hearing this experience is amazing. Just on the last legs of listening to this piece for the third time. I'll definitely have to come back and listen to this again. As an accordion player, it offers so much inspiration. And I love all the different tensions of expression. So dynamic! I hope others catch this wonderful work and comment as well. Thanks for uploading and making this recording available.

Thanks Richard, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's not very often that we get to hear a composer playing his on work.
