  • The 51st running of the Daytona 200 saw a Japan v Europe head-to-head battle! Scott Russell (Kawasaki) and reigning world superbike champion Doug Polen (Ducati) fought a dynamic duel to the chequered flag to register the closest finish ever in the history of the 200 miler.
Archive film show how the races were run in the olden days on a part beach - part road circuit, a far cry from today’s Daytona International Speedway! But Daytona is not just about racing, it is the biggest bike meet in the world, a mega-festival for thousands of like-minded enthusiasts to gather together in the Florida sun for their annual injection of motorcycle fever.

These were the absolute best days of AMA sbk, great racing back in the 90’s.

You're not kidding. Glad I got to catch the tail end of it in person in college before all the factories pulled out. Was really special.

Who remembers when the AMA tried to balance the then new 1000 Vtwin / 750 four by weight penalties to the Ferraci Ducati ?
Doug Polen = "it handles better now .."

I had the opportunity to meet both riders in a casual off track setting. Doug Polen was a true gentleman and all around great guy. Scott Russell was not! Kind of ruined my day as I was a huge Mr Daytona fan at the time.

Are you ok now though? Any chance Scott Russell was dealing with something you couldn't possibly have known about? A person can only take so much pressure.

Saw Scott Russell at a motorcycle show a few years back and asked him if he was going to do race commentary the following year. He acted as if I was just a nuisance. Oh well.

Poor Doug Polen really never got the credit he deserved, for he was a great rider!

With an AMA and 2 World Superbike championships, I'd say so.

I do think he is kind of the forgotten Ducati rider. You hear about Roche because he was the first, Fogarty because of the multiple championships.
Many people also forget how good he was on the GSXR. Before Ducati he was THE Suzuki superbike guy.

The guys being lapped on the last straight probably gave Russell enough draft to allow him to catch Polen. If it were just Polen/Russell without the lappers I'm not sure he could have caught him. The Ducati got a great drive out of the last chicane.

It is so interesting looking at the ride style from back then and compare it to current riding style. U need to go and look at beginners to see this "upright" riding style, even amateurs/rookies are more active with their bodies on the bikes today. Interesting to see how it has changed so much, given these are pure racing pros we see here.

Nice to hear Murray Walker commentate. He had the knack of letting the riders do most of the talking. Unlike today, with Ralph Blowhard Sheehen, etc. It's as if they are conducting a radio broadcast. Captain Obvious, the entire race.

I would have to disagree , 2012 Daytona 200 had to be one of the best finishes ever. The race went the whole race without a red flag. But I am a little biased, because my son won it😜
