I've been a Pink Floyd fan for more than forty years. When it comes to exploring that particular rabbit hole, I think they said it best, "Run rabbit, run. Dig that hole, forget the sun. When, at last, the work is done, don't sit down, it's time to dig another one." 🐇👍
This is my fav Pink Floyd song. It has special meaning - it came out on MTV at the same time I started taking pilot/flying lessons. so it was special there. I've said before, Pink Floyd is not just music, its experience.
Hey Jay. I’m a 60yr old black adult whose been listening to these guys since about 73 when I was about 12. Their shows are always this way for years. That tour had 3 Russian cargo planes and about 22 tractor trailers to carry the gear and 3 tractor trailers for generators to support the venues in electricity. It makes me so happy to see our young ebony family learn about this music that’s been a part of my life for 50yrs. You guys have learned the members and everything😊. I’ve seen them in their hey day. Amazing. Thanks for learning. Enjoy your reactions. Would talk to u if u talk back but ur too lovely for that.
Has anyone else ever had a dream of flying that was so real that it left you in tears when you woke up ? I have. The sense of absolute freedom from gravity. To direct where you go, as high or as low to the ground with absolutely no fear or sensation of falling. So totally spiritual. ... THIS song perfectly encapsulates that feeling.
The guitar work by David Gilmour is just stunning. The tasty blues infused licks just compliment the song perfectly. Nick Mason's drums are quite outstanding as well. Gilmour, who wrote this one and sings lead vocals, is a licensed pilot and some of the voices that are heard under the music are from actual cockpit conversations and air traffic control.
David Gilmour is a pilot but he says the song can be interpreted as his feelings about becoming the new lead member of the band after Roger Waters left.
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings, unheeded warnings I thought I thought of everything. No navigator to find my home. So many different ways to think of this song. This for me was the loss of my Father at a young age. I went downhill after he passed and many loved ones tried there best to correct it but I didn’t listen because I was lost without my Navigator in Life which was my Dad to find my home and I became empty and turned to stone. I was stuck for awhile but I never could keep my eyes from the circling skies even though at the time I was tongue tied, twisted just an earth bound misfit I. That was now probably 25 years ago that I listened to this song and thought about these lyrics and can look back and say I was learning to fly my condition was grounded but I was determined to try and I didn’t keep my eyes from the circling skies. Make sense to me. Great song.
This was their first album and single from "a momentary lapse of reason". Their first after Roger Waters left the band in the early 80's (their primary & main song writer for decades). Most people don't know this, but when they announced their upcoming tour at this time (in the 94-ish range), they were the only band to sell over a million tickets even before this album and single had even been released....
I always follow your reactions, I'm your follower here from Brazil, Pink Floyd will always give a reaction, congratulations for the channel and you are extremely beautiful 😍
David Gilmour weote this song while taking flying lessons and describes it as being about breaking free and the actual mechanics of learning to fly an aircraft
This song is an EXCELLENT depiction on man's plight to overcome gravity from da beginning,,,Pink Floyd has always had an exceptional way of setting storytelling & truth to music,,, da lyrics alone are ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE,,(don't have enough THUMBS UP for these guys)
So back in the day me and a buddy were cruising up north in MI. It was pitch black and no other cars on the road and it started snowing big fat snow flakes. We had smoked a big fatty and this song comes on the radio. The only sound was this song and with the snow in the headlights it was like flying through space in a spaceship, total out of body experience!
The song was primarily written by David Gilmour, who developed the music from a 1986 demo by Jon Carin. The notable rhythm pattern at the beginning of the song was already present in the demo, and Carin stated that it was influenced by Steve Jansen or Yukihiro Takahashi.[6] The lyrics describe Gilmour's thoughts on flying, for which he has a passion (being a licensed pilot with multiple ratings),[citation needed] though it has also been interpreted as a metaphor for beginning something new, experiencing a radical change in life, or, more specifically, Gilmour's feelings about striking out as the new leader of Pink Floyd after the departure of Roger Waters. Gilmour confirmed the latter interpretation on the Pink Floyd 25th Anniversary Special in May 1992. Also an avid pilot, drummer Nick Mason's voice can be heard at around the middle of the song. "Learning to Fly" was included on Pink Floyd's greatest hits collection Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd.[7]
@@gerryweed7697 I know mate, ive been listening to both since they both came out, in 88 and 95 respectively, literally hundreds of times, i know every note David plays on the guitar on every song by heart...!! Both albums are HOLY to me... 😉 On the Later Years remastred box set its even better 👍
I always thought this was done in the plains of Canada, then the mountains, which would make Alberta the one province that has both. The field scenes seemed to be similar to the young Clark Kent days of the film Superman, which was filmed in Canada. I researched it just now and yes, it is Alberta, Canada.
Pink Floyd pretty much invented the light show in the 1960's, and they've been projecting films on a round screen as part of their concerts since the early 1970's. They had huge inflatables as part of the show, and in 1980 they premiered "the Wall" live - a show where they build a wall out of cardboard bricks in front of the band so that by the end of the first half of the show they were completely obscured from view. I strongly recommend you read up on the background to The Wall (the album and the shows) and treat yourself to watch it live. Pink Floyd never released a Wall concert video but Roger Waters has done two versions, one from his 1990 show in Berlin and one from his 2011 tour. The way the shows are put together has to be seen to be believed.
This song talk about Taking Chances in relationships or trying something for the first time but also lot of people out there they don't notice but when it first came out the part where the people are talking part of it is recording of Mission Control talking to the Space Shuttle Challenger as it blew up
The video is using the idea of the Native American Vision Quest...the young man was having a vision of escaping the work and toil binding him to the Earth and connecting to the hawk as his spirit animal, flying free above it all and seeing the beauty of nature and the world.
I think he was always the bird and was an "earthbound misfit I" and tried to assimilate. I think the Native gentleman was reminding him who he was in the end and that he was originally a free flying bird.
The light affects we're kind of cool the round circle on back you've already heard that some of the songs that they played there's one with a bad crashes through the circle in disappears literally that was when I was at the concert with and when they do Pigs on the Wing there's a big old Pig flying over at least I was doing that concert The Division Bell album tour.
Ya yeah you for a Time this song always reminds me of my grandad he was the oldest flying pilot in the United States for a Time you know there's a little riddle at the end of the song if you listen to it again and turn it up right at the end nuheara guitar lick and it's actually the song Hey Joe the one that Jimi Hendrix did the cover it wasn't really his song it was someone else but Hendrix made it huge all right my girl you take care of yourself out there in so Cal
American Indian magic/spiritualism. By putting the feathers in his armband, when he jumped, he BECAME the eagle. And that was how he learned to fly!! But then they showed the hang glider, so maybe that is modern man's solution, since there isn't magic anymore.
So tremendously full of symbols this video is. At first the young man is spending the time in aimless and meaningless effort because he doesn't know any better. Then he sees a small plane flying and ideas start to spring into his mind - maybe this isn't the only way to live. The Indian shaman appearing on the field is his gut feeling, his subconscious mind pushing him to try something different. He decides for a change - throws away the scythe, puts on the jacket and goes for the mountains, exchanging the scorching heat of the plains for the cool breeze of the highlands. He is arduously climbing the rocks but now he has goal and purpose which make all things easier. Once on the top of the mountain he throws away the jacket, signifying a point of no return - he is not going back to his previous life. Then he musters all his courage - it is not easy to radically change your life, it's only for the brave. The shaman/conscience keeps pushing him, and finally he jumps into the void. Scared at first, but then we are shown an eagle flying majestically over the mountain - maybe the young man has turned into an eagle. At the end we see a light glider flying around, presumably the young man completing his journey of initiation, his metamorphosis into a free man. Beautiful.
When he jumped off the cliff he became the bird...
I've been a Pink Floyd fan for more than forty years. When it comes to exploring that particular rabbit hole, I think they said it best, "Run rabbit, run. Dig that hole, forget the sun. When, at last, the work is done, don't sit down, it's time to dig another one." 🐇👍

It's interesting how the band got its name, original founder Sid Barrett named the band after two , Georgia bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd council.
This is off of my favorite Pink Floyd album, the name is, a momentary lapse of reason.

David Gilmor is an avid pilot, and this song is purely about learning to fly. That simple.

Try the live performance from a Pulse concert. Epic.
