      I loved how she even admits she's' not a "technically trained musician" which is something I doubt any recent pop singers would admit despite being less talented than her.

    • @Marco_Fabian37
      @Marco_Fabian37 5 лет назад +16

      Of course she does but what she means is that she’s not a technical singer. Like she doesn’t know the proper names of the notes because she simply has a natural singing ability. Those types singers are very rare. Not to say they don’t need help from a professional because as we’ve seen, as she’s gotten older, her voice has deteriorated because of lack of technical instruction.

      She knows how many octaves, but she will never say because wants you say it people will always expect that from Her. I love MC but she is somewhat a lazy singer when comes to work she puts in her voice, Whitney Houston was after Bodyguard too. Like they would not always keep up with their voice, so it all depends on the day rest etc. On a good day, MC has sixth octaves, or more. She can cover 8th octave or higher, but thats on a good good day!!!!!!!! Normally she could easily cover seventh octave. Normally she can cover 2nd octave. So on a normal vocally rest day I would say 5 to 5.5 octaves. But on a very good day oh yeah that girl got 6.5 or 7.

      +Buduzhi Eligwe Every single singer out there, that is anyone who sings for a living, knows. They know their overall range, and they know the parts of it where they feel comfortable. She does not have 7 octaves, for example, and you can tell she knows that but enjoys the aura those rumors lend her. And she also knows that if she went into specifics (3.5-4 octaves at any given time, and a little over 5 when she's rested and warmed up), people would be asking for demonstrations all the time. So she answers in a way that works for her without making herself vulnerable to haters and maintaining the allure her fans enjoy.

Even today where there is a huge social trend about measuring range that was not in Mariah's prime days, many singers still don't measure the notes they are reaching or extremes of their range even though they practice high bits and low bits. Unless she is pitch perfect, it is quite likely that she did not know her exact range

    I don't blame Mariah for not giving her range, opera singers get nailed to the wall if they can't hit notes in the roles they sing. Pop singers have more freedom in this area, they can change melody lines if they don"t think they can reach a note - and it's also exciting - will she that note or won"t she? Opera singers can't change a melody )except with coloratura) - they have to hit those notes - careers are over or they change roles if they can't hit a solid high C in Aida, for example.

    Of course she knows her range, she just wanted to entertain the mystery and the hype around her range. Her range used to be 5 full octaves and she is able to hit/sing notes on the 7th octave, hence why some people who know nothing thought she had a 7-octave range. She has a 5-octave range, from g2 to g#7 approximately.

    • @taeydream
      @taeydream 8 лет назад +56

      spenzur no, it's not. it's a position you sing in. the vocal classification you're probably thinking of is contralto

    • @spenzur
      @spenzur 8 лет назад +21

      +daydream Yes you are right, I'm sorry. The dutch translation for contralto is alt so that was a bit confusing.

    • @alexlundell2947
      @alexlundell2947 8 лет назад +71

      +Angelfully 2 A true contralto wouldn't be able to belt an F5 or higher. A contralto has a very androgynous voice that can often sound masculine. Mariah may sometimes sound masculine when she is using her lower register, however when she is singing in her mid range she has a pretty, feminine sound. A contralto would not have this lyric, bright sound to their voice. A real contralto would be someone like Cher, or Annie Lennox.

    • @sinhueherrera8984
      @sinhueherrera8984 Год назад +4

      You can be born with natural talent but still there’s a lot of work put into actually developing it, even Mariah has said she worked really hard in her range.
      Also don’t forget her mom was an opera singer and a vocal coach, of course she learned many things from her
      Reading statements like yours make me a bit scared that people think that way cause it pretty much shows people think singers are just born with their voices developed, and while they are naturally gifted, the reality is that any good singer has had to practice to get to a good level, and even people that aren’t naturally born singers can learn how to sing pretty good too

    • @instrumentsmrti
      @instrumentsmrti Год назад +1

      @@sinhueherrera8984no one's denying that she never practiced but even she's said she dosen't know notes or write that way, just plays around and that singing is like "channeling" for her, u can tell she's always just had a good musical ear probably because she was listening to her mother + alot of music growing up.
      i do agree that she's learned and put in the practice throughout her life but u can't really teach musicality like that in my opinion. u can learn riffs, runs and how to hit higher notes but her natural musical talent is clearly something she just has because of genes & how she grew up

    She’s always been so humble about her voice and her range. Listen to how she talks about her singing, she’s not cocky, and she doesn’t boast her singing ability over others. In fact she’s always given other vocalists shes shared the stage with spotlight because for her it seems to be more about the experience of performing rather than constantly showing off what you can do vocally. She always talks about her voice like “it’s whatever comes out at the moment” when she knows especially back then she could deliver about anything anytime she wanted.

    It's true the host says that some vocalists have a big gap between some notes. Some so-called 5 octave singers actually have 3, but Mariah Carey has 5 continuous octaves, note by note.
    If we count quality support or the significant octaves, then probably 3 and something down from Eb3 and up to the sixth octave (like E6 head voice). People usually don't take whistle into account because that's impossible to be resonated, nor is it really useful in singing; but I think her whistle definitely plays an important role in her music with versatility. Singers rarely have 3 or more octaves of SIGNIFICANT ranges.

      Yeah, As a Tenor I have access to about 4 total octaves that are usable(C2-C6) Although C2 is too quiet for my liking, and I have to be vocally very healthy for the C6. I think I(and most other tenors I know) have about 3 and 1/2 octave of comfy range(E2-A5ish)

      @Siren Thelxiope She sings low notes quite well & has an expansive range however she supports down to an D3 and that's inconsistent. I find it hard to believe that a professional musician like herself never measured her octave range. That can be done in five minutes by sitting in front of the piano and hitting some keys. I think she doesn't want to say what her range is out of either humility, or to avoid being criticized when she doesn't perform up to her alleged range. Either way, she's amazing!

    Mmm... Well, if she doesn't know specifically, fine. However, if you want to know and if she wants to know, listen to "You're So Cold" from Emotions to get an idea.
    The opening of that song covers five octaves from C to c'''' Including the whistle notes.
    (in scientific terms, C2 to C7 - or if you must, from second ledger beneath a regular bass staff to another octave above the second ledger above a treble staff).
    The peak of her lead vocals in this song appear to be at G'' (G5). Beyond this there might be a strain unless she jumps into the whistle notes. Note that Mariah doesn't sing a C''' (C6) even in the whistle voice on this song.
    Trained singers (myself included) usually work on a solid three-octave window including falsetto, and Mariah doesn't seem to be an exception there, but I bet she can strike four octaves in a warm-up (as can I).

    • @someday7333
      @someday7333 8 лет назад +3

      C2? That's low even for a bass. I think you mean C3. It's a four octave song. Also above her belting range she goes into head voice and THEN her whistle register. So there really isn't any strain from G5 --> E6, assuming she's in her head voice.
      She _has_ demonstrated a little over five octaves though. /watch?v=heEoTvajPWk

    • @jerryteacup
      @jerryteacup 8 лет назад +1

      I double-checked - my bad. You're right, I botched that up.
      There are four octaves in the song, ranging from the initial barely audible c (bass staff, second space) to the whistled c' ' ' ' (fifth ledger above the treble staff).
      Damn, why can't there be just one standard with the note tags?? Fucking hard to navigate in between...

    Queen Mariah Carey
    is a Coloratura Soprano for why ...
    The coloratura soprano is that voice that has the ability to execute successions of quick notes within the vocal register of soprano, in an ornate style or with elaborate embellishments, including the quick passages of scales and trills, whether written or improvised. Term coloratura refers to the elaborate ornamentations of a melody. The soprano of coloratura is a voice of high agility, that usually has a tesitura quite exposed and commonly with capacity to handle the recording of whistle. In the strict sense, the term coloratura is not restricted to describe any range of the voice, so within the classification of vocal nuances, the coloratura soprano may be a light soprano, lyric, lyrical light dramatic dramatic coloratura.
    That does not look like mariah (in all truth😏), as I said before is not very skillful to recognize perhaps that is why people think that she Alto or Contralto by the low notes, the sopranos coloratura can have a voice So strong in the bass register, even very good breathing capacity even as I said before ability to move from a very high note to a higher and lower one (mimi no 😏) And a wonderful angelic voice again that is Queen Mariah Carey😘😍👑

      I can relate to Mariah regarding her range. It's not as easy as saying measure it, because it changes, depending on the days, and the edges are not easy to define... if you can go possibly go higher but it's now ugly or breaking or shrill or airy, it's hard to define the edge. She experimented with her voice. I do too. :She had a great whistle register as well as impressive higs and lows in full voice and mixed voice. Leave it at that

  • @usedtobe1197
    @usedtobe1197 2 года назад +1

    Mariah sabe muito bem até onde pode chegar com sua voz, mas ela também tem uma ótima percepção em como colocar uma nota, seja ela grave ou aguda, numa música como um ornamento para combinar com a sensação que ela quer passar para o ouvinte e não apenas para mostrar que tem aquelas notas

  • @simplymj7614
    @simplymj7614 8 лет назад +11

    Her most consistent range when she first started was D3-B6 in her prime. She would occasionally hit E7, but kept most of her high notes around G6/B6. But as she aged going above G5 became hard for her to pull off with ease. And her lower notes went even lower to G2, which is shocking to hear a soprano dip that low. Technically Mariah's range closer to being a little over 4 octaves. As for 5 octaves, in not sure.

    I believe she had the range of 7th octaves when she was younger and possibly did it while vocalising with her mum. I guess this is where the story came from, but I think she can no longer do it as human voice loses that ability with age. In my view the whistles are the icing on the cake as I find Mariah's voice very beautiful, very pleasant to my ears, she uses melisma in the right way not like some others (i.e Christina) her technique is great too and she is very versatile and can sing anything.

    I don't think she's lying at all she really has talent, and it depends on certain circumstances you put your voice through eg. rest. She probably didn't pay much attention to her mom pointing out the notes to her and she still doesn't care, whether or not she knows it, doesn't affect her being one of the best. There was this time, when I said something like 'No' in a discussion and it was so sharp people around covered their hears like Wtf. I have never been able to do that again .
