      +Francisco Emiliano Pastrana No I think it was her love of champagne. Alcohol is the worst thing possible for a voice. I'm sure being over-worked had to have played a part as well.

    • @HannahNguyen1995
      @HannahNguyen1995 8 лет назад +26

      From what I've heard, her voice became slightly better during the pregnancy b/c you know she couldn't drink alcohol (she developed other health problems though during that time).
      I swear to God, there's not a week that passes by that you won't see her with a Champagne glass in the hands.

      What I'm saying is the fans aren't to blame. SHE choose to release all those albums back to back. When she came out it wasn't typical to release albums as frequently as her. Look at Janet and Whitney. After Butterfly she should've really taken a break. She was having vocal problems yet she didn't take a break.

      She wasn't. She kicked it off acapella and did great. You are referring to only the 1 minute where they shut off her ear monitors so she was forced to sing while deaf, they isolated the vocal, and released it all over youtube the next day. After a minute the monitors came back on and Mariah finished great. The music covered up most of that minute and we could only hear 1 or 2 sour notes throughout during her live performance.

    I know Marian has nodules, but if you listen to her speaking voice as she got older, her voice got more husky and deep sounding. Also she said her voice was better when she was pregnant. Its too bad if she never got a full hormone profile done when she was about age 17 or so, because I think some of her vocal problem is a hormone imbalance.

    • @stone8193
      @stone8193 6 лет назад +1

      Paul O probably not. Got husky from normal strengthening of the voice, menopause, and wear and tear (singing constantly with nodules will create wear on the cords no matter how perfect your technique is)

      True this, I believe this too, in 2008 while trying to get pregnant her voice was seriously no where to being in the conditioned to sing - her voice at that time was weak and in 2018 it sounded so great, it’s just that she doesn’t use her chest voice for it has turned much deeper although I find it very great. Her With you on GMA was amazing.

    • @xejelah

      Women's voice naturally deepen as they get older -that's perfectly normal. You could be right, but I don't know if that was around during the 80's when she was 17.

    It's unfortunate she got nodules so young and they became permanent. Often times the nodules heal on their own but not always.
    It's unfortunate, because once you have nodules, even if you have flawless technique, your voice fatigues quicker than normal due to the cords not being able to seal up perfectly during making a sound.
    And if you sing when you're tired, your voice will get more damaged because you'll be forced to push or overcompress the air to make the same sound, and the cords can't resist the pushed air stream so they don't seal up well and instead crash together.
    In my opinion she should have gotten vocal surgery before deciding to have a career in singing. The surgery is not so risky anymore, and she would have entered into her career with a correctly functioning voice

  • @malsrimutukumarana2212
    @malsrimutukumarana2212 7 лет назад +15

    yes sleep but what about training? opera singers training their voice develop technique over decades to be able to sing consistently.

    • @peculiarchap
      @peculiarchap 7 лет назад +7

      malsri mutukumarana I would assume that's because of her vocal nodules, she's been very public about having nodules and not having them treated, she also said on another interview that she learned how to sing around them, so I would think she's always on a state of discomfort, hence the priority on sleep and rest.

    • @stone8193
      @stone8193 6 лет назад +3

      Her technique is pretty great, but she has had permanent nodules. When you have them, your cords cannot seal up as properly when you produce sound, so the voice fatigues faster when singing or speaking, no matter how good her technique is.
      It's unfortunate but she was always hesitant to get them removed surgically. Which is a shame, because her voice would've stayed strong

    1. She's not an Alto. Alto is not a Vocal Fach.
    2. Nodules, not taking care of herself, being/getting sick, Her wanting to show everybody what she could do vocally, Age, basically everything that affects the body will effect the voice.
    3. Nodules are Nodules and they will do what they do best: make the voice raspy, tired ( especially as she ages her voice gets tired real fast ), they may have helped her with the whistles ( getting that airy aspect to it ) but none the less made her upper belting register hoarse.

    Rest and humidifiers are not a very efficacious strategy to protect your voice. She has vocal nodules and probably uses alcohol, talks excessively nowadays and enjoys parties, where she probably screams and shout, talk loud, anyway. This develops inflammation in your vocal cords and deteriorate your voice. She has to exercise regularly under the supervision of a professional, modify her routine to a healthier one and to follow up the CURRENT recommendations. Rest your voice hen you still have these bad habits means nothing.

    • @KateSingSpirit
      @KateSingSpirit 6 лет назад +3

      It doesn't. Tea doesn't go near your vocal folds. No drinks or food does, therefore the vocal folds don't get affected by what we drink or eat. All that goes straight to our stomach when we swallow (our singing can get affected by a bad diet but because it causes other problems that can hurt the vocal folds).Vocalists do drink tea with honey cause it's good for your throat and honey is very beneficial. :)

    Her whistles were of proper technique, however, she pushed her voice too much, reaching up to B7. And her singing through her nodules, wasn't helping her in any case. A voice should have proper warm ups and such before using it. Something she did kind of lacked. However, her placement is good so she was able to manage her voice but not for long.

  • @Marvinglz
    @Marvinglz 8 лет назад +7

    Oh Mimi I love you but as a vocal performance major for 6 years, tea and honey is the biggest cliche that does NOT help at all for your voice. And the whole steam thing Mariah just drink lots of water! Plus, I blame her breathiness for her hoarseness. My voice teacher would always say "learn how to properly shout for singing and you can shout until the cows come home". LOL

    • @MC-ig3ci
      @MC-ig3ci 8 лет назад +4

      +Marvinglz I think tea and honey can help a bit, but not directly on or for the vocal folds themselves, no. I can see how any kind of hot drink would help the intrinsic throat muscles relax and that can help things feel easier when you go to sing. The honey can coat the back of the throat and make it feel more comfortable. But, yeah, neither can directly contact the vocal folds enough to have an effect there.
      The steam actually can be beneficial... it can open up sinus passages to help you achieve healthy resonance and if you are a bit dry and need to go on, it is more of an instant fix. The water that you drink has no instant direct effect on the vocal folds (if any food or drink could touch them, you'd obviously choke as that is the opening to the lungs). It is obviously very important to stay hydrated, but with drinking water it has to cycle through the stomach and around the entire body before hydrating mucosal areas like the voice. If you're not as well hydrated as you need to be you can use steam while you're waiting for the water you drink to get into your system. Steam goes right into the air passages and is deposited onto the vocal folds with each breath you take, so it can be an important tool in maintaining the voice.

    • @Marvinglz
      @Marvinglz 8 лет назад +1

      MC Of course tea and honey are good in itself but for singing no. Honey can't lubricate the voice enough that's required to sustain a long and demanding singing job. Does not stay on the chords long enough as your saliva washes it down. Humidifiers only work if you stay inside a concealed room where it's being humidified i.e. a bathroom. After that any cold, hot air or liquids will pass through the vocal chords and dry them. As a professional singer hydrating should be done everyday. Well enough time to allow the body to naturally lubricate the voice in vigorous singing conditions. Honey, tea, or humidifiers won't do what a well hydrated body can.

      No, a warm drink can help the voice indirectly by helping the muscles of the throat warm up and relax... so that IS good for singing. The act of singing involves more than just the vocal cords/folds.
      Honey can't lubricate the vocal cords at all, it won't ever touch them or you'd choke as the larynx is the opening to the lungs. I was just saying that the honey could potentially make the back of your throat feel more comfortable for a time, but not affect the vocal cords directly. It's important to understand that liquids cannot pass through the vocal cords! I don't know where you're getting this information, but it is anatomically incorrect. If liquids could pass though the larynx you'd choke.
      I agree, hydrating should be done every day... but if you are dry, steam is a good option as you wait until the water you drink can cycle through your body and be deposited over the mucosal areas of the voice box. Swallowing goes down your esophagus to the stomach, breathing goes into the larynx (voice box) and down into the lungs. So, once again, humidifiers go directly to the source--the vocal cords--because you breathe the steam in instead of swallowing so that moisture is deposited directly where you need it. Steam--along with proper hydration through drinking water regularly--can be an effective adjunct therapy for maintaining vocal health.

      MC If you are about to go run in a marathon would you pour hot/warm water on your legs to warm them up? Hell no! Because the warm water would make the muscle too flaccid and may cause you to hurt yourself. Same thing with the vocal chords. Once you do a 20 min vocal warm up drinking or breathing hot or cold air/liquids would be incredibly detrimental for the voice.
      Are you a singer? Because any real singer knows tea does absolutely nothing. I was active singer for about 6 years everyday singing and performing and was given advice to drink tea with honey and humidify my voice by some artsy nutty woman. None help me at all! It wasn't until I started drinking a gallon of water every day that my voice was always naturally lubricated. To me those things are for lazy novice singers. Obviously it didn't help Mariah since she would always have problems regardless of her humidifiers or teas. I mean it's your voice you will and can do whatever u want. But for me those things are incredibly ridiculous and no real singer I ever worked with ever said it help them.

      +Marvinglz I'm sorry to be rude and say this, but I think you have some difficulty with reading comprehension. I AGREED with you that drinking enough water on a daily basis is very important for singers.
      Yes, professional singers use tea. Professional singers DO use steam. What works for you may not work as well for others, especially if there is a pre-existing condition that requires more care. For example: someone with allergies could benefit from additional care like steaming because they can be prone to sinus congestion and dryness (allergy medication can cause the voice and sinus passages to be very dry no matter how much water you drink), which can be helped through steaming and humidification.
      Would you call Renee Fleming a novice? Or Luther Vandross? Or Celine Dion? Or the members of the a cappella group Pentatonix? These are just a few examples off the top of my head of people who have been known to use humidification for their voice. Using humidifiers and steaming the voice with other devices can be very useful, especially if the environment is dry (like the desert or in very cold winter weather). Doing this can help relieve sinus congestion so a healthy resonance can be achieved when performing as well as lubricate the voice (IN ADDITION TO DRINKING ENOUGH WATER). So it is not "ridiculous"; that is a condescending, arrogant thing to say.
      What I've been trying to get across could be interesting or potentially useful information and is not culled from some random vocal coach or singing instructor at the local college. The information comes from doctors of the voice, people who better understand the physiology like speech language pathologists, speech therapists, and otolaryngologists.

    Unfortunately for her and the fans is that one of the most important things she could have done is actually train her voice with a professional vocal coach, and singing and performing coach for that matter. Instead, she seemed to have spend way too much time trying to be sexy or doing other things that had nothing to do with her most important strength because she never got a clue about what made people gravitate towards her. Sad when I think about how much better her career could have gone after leaving the Sony nest.

      well, if you're the most famous singer, you would have a lot of guesting and performances. you'll have no enough sleep so the only thing you can do is lip sync. try to sing when you dont have enough sleep.
