You should try the OG version, the choco-cheese one, but not the red velvet one. It would reset your western culinary brain that cheese and chocolate are a bomb combination. 😊Seriously, you should try before you leave Indonesia. Oh, and it's best when you share the food. So at the start eat the meatball with the soup, then add the ketchup, and taste it. Next, add the sambal and taste it,. Then add the sweet soy sauce. It's like a playground of flavors.

Thank you for sharing your experience trying our stret fod, Shev and Dev. Just a bit of info: Either sweet martabak or terang bulan is NOT from East Java. The pancake was originally from Chinese, and the first one to sell it was a Chinese man living in Bangka island, near Sumatra. From what I read, the most famous martabak stall in Bangka was named Terang Bulan (Moonshine), hence when it spread to all around Indonesia, some areas adopted the brand name, some other areas call it sweet martabak. The name martabak itself is derived from an arabic word 'mutabbaq', meaning 'folded', and was originally used for the savoury martabak. I think it's safe to assume that's where the savoury martabak comes from. Back to the sweet martabak, some people call what you had (the red velvet variety) 'kue bandung'. Bandung is a name of a city in Indonesia, and it was there the sweet martabak--originally only had one variety, with peanuts, condensed milk and chocolate rice filling--got its all new flavours. Besides the oreo red velvet, there's also corn and cheese, banana and cheese (both are my favourites), just cheese, chocolate and cheese, nutella, pandan variety (for the pancake) and many others. You know, once the door of creativity is opened, all sort of ideas will come out. And all use condensed milk in the filling, of course...😊
