Kanye West talks Primo in advance of Peter Rosenberg's "NoiseMakers" -- going down Dec. 11th at the 92nd Y Tribeca. It will be a night with DJ Premier.
Let’s also talk about how many rappers bit his style. He even inspired a lot of rappers. The way he would space his words on the beat. The patterns he would get… All that. Whenever people do that, that’s Jay Dee all day long. ~ Kanye West, Rapper and Producer, from an interview with Semtex on BBC Radio, February 18th, 2006
@BeenaBee i will admit timbo is all over the place when it come what kind of music does he produce but he is a genuine producer you have to give him i mean really he has made so dope ass joints man
In no particular order, my top are: 9th Wonder, Dj Premier, Dr. Dre, Erick Sermon, Hi-Tek, J-Dilla, Marley Marl, Nujabes (I consider him to be Hip Hop as well), RZA, and Stoupe (who is never mentioned in these conversations).
In no particular order, my top are: 9th Wonder Dj Premier Dr. Dre Erick Sermon Hi-Tek J-Dilla Nujabes (I consider him to be Hip Hop as well) RZA and Stoupe (who is never mentioned in these conversations)
•All the greats respected him the most…. Common actually stayed with him in his last days - they both stayed in L.A. together - and we would go over there when we were working on the album. And I remember him giving me drums. It was such an honor for him to actually give me drums because I’d actually stolen so many drums off of his beat CDs. (laughs)…
yeah Pete you phased out on that reply but I guess what you meant is that Preem did not produce "Everything I am", only did the scratches. And the original "Classic" to which Kanye rhymed to was actually produced by Rick Rubin. Kudos on the interview!
All yall is forgetting marley marl. hes the greatest hands down. premo is also one of my favorites.rza, large professor, pete rock, diamond d, showbiz, da beat minerz, buckwild, even larry smith (he produced kurtis blow, run dmc, and whodini), dr. dre, erick sremon, havoc, clark kent, easy mo bee, prince paul, rick rubin, paul c, dj quick, j dilla, dr period, an\d the list goes on. if i forgot some people please remind me.
well, i believe he said they were some of the best, so are you saying he put himself in his place? others may call this being humble, but really kanye just says what he feels and he must feel those are some of the best producers. respect real
@westside159 Don't forget J Dilla (Jay Dee), Large Professor, Rza, Madlib, Prince Paul, there are many great producers. Rza maybe is the greatest of all.
Around this time he was really depressed. You can see how much weight he lost at this time. His mom had died and his girlfriend left him around the time of this video. He's good now though.
No doubt mass appeal is a classic track but it's not Premo's best. I prefer Take It Personal. But pretty much anything RZA did in the first 5 years of Wu-Tang can't be matched. Mass Appeal can't compete with Chessboxin, Bring the Pain, Shadowboxin, Wu-Gambinos, 260, Poisonous Darts....shall I go on?
i think 99% of the world would agree kayne is a hip/rap artist, and that album was marketed as such. The real cliche is that break out artists like kayne end up making garbage, either out of ego, or opportunity within the market.(hence autotune).
DJ Quik is definately up there. There's no best. There's the best 'AT'. Best at samples, symbols, keys, drum machine etc. I mean that's my comment. But I view it as kind of a polytheistic thing. There's many 'gods' in the world of the greatest producers. Everyone mentioned in the comments below are included.
hey trebor... A -- Kanye did not PRODUCE "Everything I am" B -- "Classic" was actually a remix...Primo did not produce the original.. C -- Bite me so technically...you and kanye are wrong about that...
I could sit here and explain to you why he's the best of all time but obviously you don't got an ear for RZA's work. I just sampled the best of Dilla on itunes and I wasn't impressed and yes I know the others, too. Look up the video on youtube where RZA showed up at a KRS-One show and KRS had him come to the stage and referred to RZA as "The King"
I hear u tho! Bottomline u can't go wrong with either one. They def made new york hip-hop the best in history. And one of my fav premo beats of all time is N Together now with Meth and Limp Bizkit. Meth def rode that bitch to the fullest!
i think kanye was in a bit of a hurry.. otherwise i cant explain how he could forget j dilla and no id?! he often said that jay dee is his favorite producer..
dude voice shit has been around forever, you think britney spears sold 75 million records on her voice alone.. hell nah, they have tools in production to change that shit up.. truth is no one wants to admit it now but t-pain invented a new style of music with the autotune and for the most part every song hes on sounds hot
@SkateSka ...Yo it bugs the f%$& outta me. J Dilla was and is the greatest Hip-Hop Producer of all time. And you got cats like Kanye who recognized his style, ripped it off and got crazy commercial with it. RIP James Dewitt Yancey.
@disciple21781 How can you mention Dr Dre, when you have legends like Preme, Pete, Dilla, Large Pro, etc. He ain't the best, he sold his soul. He was a great producer, can't deny that. But he never was near DJ Premier level. But if it's your opinion it's ok.
And yo it still seem like he wasn't really feeling the whole point of the interview son like he was emotionally upset because they weren't asking him about some of his work. I hate this dude to the fullest you na mean. This kid just need to just come out and say he's gay.
I didn't say Kanye produced ''Everything I am'', I said Primo did the scratches. And if u knew that about ''Classic'', why didn't u orrect Kanye? Wikipedia ''stans''. lol. And Kanye shitted on you when he said that. But, you're an ok guy. Stick to dissing Duke; you're good at that.
thats not a hip hop album, like waynes new album is a rock album, artist is branching out to get out from under that cliche that rappers cant do nuthin else but rap... IMO
Yo Jay Dee don't get no recognition after Kanye recognized his style, ripped it off and commercialized it. Don't get me wrong Kanye is a great producer. However, Kanye's style got Dilla's name all over it.
judging by the beats on 808s and Heartbreak, Kanye has never even heard of DJ Premier....ha! I mean, I total respect his notch on commercial music's bed post.... but that album is an insult to hip hop......seriously.
kanye owned pete rosenberg... u should already know that Kanye did a track with Primo. Plus Primo did the scratches on ''Graduation'''s ''Everything I am''. U fucked up big time, my dude...
The only thing that gets Kanye to calm down is talking about producers, beats and sonics
I loved 808's and Heartbreak
loving the interviews
that pastelle jacket
nice list man
"U KNOW MY STEEZ" by Gangstarr is the song at the end
Anybody know what tune is been played at the end?
Why nobody mentions large professor?!?!
Let’s also talk about how many rappers bit his style. He even inspired a lot of rappers. The way he would space his words on the beat. The patterns he would get… All that. RZA
and Stoupe (who is never mentioned in these conversations)
hey Peter Rosenberg, "Classic"..."Timeless"
•All the greats respected him the most…. Common actually stayed with him in his last days - they both stayed in L.A. together - and we would go over there when we were working on the album. And I remember him giving me drums. It was such an honor for him to actually give me drums because I’d actually stolen so many drums off of his beat CDs. (laughs)…

Kudos on the interview!
@bossaideed Gang Starr - You Know My Steez , that is also Dj Premier favorite song by himself
1:31 what does he say? "I think he was the only person who..."?
@westside159 yup they both coming to japan may 2!
Well Kanye worked with DJ Premier, Pete Rock, RZA and Q-Tip on his new album.
it's all preference...everybody got their own opinion, lets respect each other
All yall is forgetting marley marl. hes the greatest hands down. premo is also one of my favorites.rza, large professor, pete rock, diamond d, showbiz, da beat minerz, buckwild, even larry smith (he produced kurtis blow, run dmc, and whodini), dr. dre, erick sremon, havoc, clark kent, easy mo bee, prince paul, rick rubin, paul c, dj quick, j dilla, dr period, an\d the list goes on. if i forgot some people please remind me.
Kanye West said he will return back to the production style of his first 3 albums. besides that he's producing the Blueprint 3
showbiz and diamond d
question: What is the opening song of this video called?
I know its a primo song but I can't member what it was called...
any help?
Little late but it’s Gang Starr the ?
well, i believe he said they were some of the best, so are you saying he put himself in his place? others may call this being humble, but really kanye just says what he feels and he must feel those are some of the best producers. respect real
@SkateSka Me too.
i forgot bomb squad, q-tip, lord finesse,.
Yeah man people usually forget to mention marley marl, prince paul, large professor....
Kanye played Rosenberg! ha ha "Oh you mean the nike shit I was on"
lol!
“Dilla is a drum god. His drums can’t ever be topped.”--Kanye West
Song at the end?
Gangstarr- You Know My Steez
he said he thinks primo and premier like they're two different ppl
kanye DEF respects and loves dilla.
@nemesis700 lol, commercials don't count
@seboufdu59 It almost actually bugs me when someone skips dilla in a hip-hop producer conversation.
those are all GREAT producers he named, no doubt...but YOU MUST include DRE AND DILLA in a list of top 5-10 producers, PERIOD
jthesnake77 Jay Dilla the goat
You're wrong. Kanye produced "Everything I am". But it features scratches from Premier.
I think when he said Premo he meant Pete....He thought he said Pete seconds later so it's possible
LOL If I was Kanye I wouldn't hug Mr. Cee....
RZA best of all time....no fuckin questions.
LOL he says primo and dj premier
Where was DILLA ye?
I do not like Kayne or any of the other new school kids, but... he gives props to Premier that is a point in his favour.
Old school forever.
1.kanye
2.9th wonder
3.J Dilla
4.Just Blaze
4.dr dre............your top 5s???? please respond to me
@westside159 Don't forget J Dilla (Jay Dee), Large Professor, Rza, Madlib, Prince Paul, there are many great producers. Rza maybe is the greatest of all.
and Ye, which would be a more obvious addition
he wanted to say pete rock and dj premier...
but he said preemo and dj premier.... i think he wanted to say pete
lol @ 1:44 - 1:51
not at all dude. Ye didn't start choppin up beats till Jay Dee died, and he's said he only does it in honour of dilla
Kanye west did two songs with DJ Premier.
peter look like he's trying to get as close to kanye as he can without getting smacked
he doesn't seem to care too much about the interview but if u he'd say his truly list im sure dilla would be on it, maybe even on top
Jay Dilla
Around this time he was really depressed. You can see how much weight he lost at this time. His mom had died and his girlfriend left him around the time of this video. He's good now though.

kanye got his own style the "chipmunk soul" just because he's known for sampling alotta soul does'nt mean he ripped it of dilla.
@themostinfluential
oh im sorry, i didnt know about your condition. i hope one day you can get some help.
@themostinfluential
lmao im totally kidding btw
i think 99% of the world would agree kayne is a hip/rap artist, and that album was marketed as such. The real cliche is that break out artists like kayne end up making garbage, either out of ego, or opportunity within the market.(hence autotune).

if anything he ripped it off the RZA
I could sit here and explain to you why he's the best of all time but obviously you don't got an ear for RZA's work.

C'mon, Kanye made at least 3 classics.
Common - Be (exc. the 2 dilla beats)
Kanye West - College Dropout
John Legend - Get Lifted
DR.DRE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!
he played himself at the end..........
interview over!!!
ugh mister cee.
And yo it still seem like he wasn't really feeling the whole point of the interview son like he was emotionally upset because they weren't asking him about some of his work. I hate this dude to the fullest you na mean. This kid just need to just come out and say he's gay.
RZA > Preemo
