@διάβολος μπάσταρδος I think KRS is saying that rapping about illegal shit is surface level and those who can go above and uplift their people are true emcees. Most of the people on your list have gone above illegal shit and have uplifted their people so they are true emcees.
I remember when this first came out, so many people were mad that Kanye was included in a song that featured DJ Premier, Rakim, KRS-One, and Nas. W/ only 2 albums out at that point, I could understand. I didn't mind as much though bc I was 10-11 when The College Dropout came out and Kanye was probably the first artist I got into from the start. While Kanye was never the lyricist that these guys were, it's undeniable that he's one of the most influential artists in hip-hop history and deserving of his spot on this song.
Kanye is a magnificent producer.... and that's it. The fact that he made it big as a rapper is due to the diluted pool of actual talent in the 2000 and 2010s. There are some great ones, but not as many as the 90s. He is an average MC at best.
I thought his verse and aesthetic fit well next to these other legends. His pen and innovation was just as prolific. A lot of salty boom bap stans were the only ones that were really mad.
Can’t believe it’s been 17 years since this came out. This song truly is timeless. Lord willing, I’ll see y’all here again in 24’, in 2025 and beyond… #Classic.
"I'm everywhere you never been, and better than I ever been" "timeless so age don't count in the booth, when your flow stay submerged in the fountain of youth"
This song low key was a hip hop culture reset in 2007 to remind people what Hip Hop is really about. The fact that Nas was on this after he dropped the Hip Hop is Dead album in '06 says alot. As a teeneager at the time when this dropped I soaked all in especially KRS Ones verse
Kanye verse was just as nice as the rest of them , he had just as many metaphors as the rest of them, y'all just don't like him cause all his antics. He definitely held his own, and his first 4 albums are all considered classics Stop hating on him as a musician and mc.
he did fine, but every other rapper captures your attention 100% of the time with every word, kanye had moments but as some other commenter said about rakims verse being butter, kanye's verse wasn't that level. imo :)
Much better to do a track with some of the greats and get shredded by them than to only work with MCs that can't even compete with you. Maybe it makes you look bad when Eminem comes and murders you on your own record like with Hov, but is only working with whack rappers because you know you're better than them really what's best for you as a lyricist? Kanye's not the greatest lyricist in the game, but you can never say he's afraid to take risks.
SepztarBeats yeah, he sucks to anyone who doesn't know shit about hip-hop and rap. Countless classics produced, for artists like Jay-Z, Common, Nas, Alicia Keys, D-Dot, Pusha T, himself.....gah damn what you said was an OPINION and not fact. Shut yo inbred, Trump supporting ass up.
Kanye left no memorable impression on this. Rakim's "timeless, so age don't count in the booth, when your flow stays submerged in the Fountain of Youth" line stuck with me the first time I heard it. Nas' "yeah, you went platinum, yeah that's nice, now let me see you do the same thing twice" line was absolutely scathing. His line about cars, too, shows how your priorities shift so heavily once you actually achieve success (KRS did the same with the line about gold chains). Kanye's verse lacked anything like that. KRS-One explained his hope to "hear more local MCs" on the radio, explained the difference between simply being a rapper and being an emcee, and then finished with a line about positivity. Kanye did none of that. You can like Kanye all you want (I like many of his songs, especially ones that were recorded around this time), but don't pretend for a second he has the same lyrical skills as the rest of them.
