I was completely obsessed with Hip hop as a kid growing up in the 90s. The crazy thing that I always remember about being a kid back then in the UK was that the underground scene was always so much better than the commercial stuff. We certainly had an access to certain artists, but it was always a case of having to dig deep for the real obscure artists. I would search everywhere, but quite often we would have to order many of them. Biggest buzz ever ordering a CD from an independent shop back in the day and getting the call a few weeks later when it finally arrived from the US. My CD collection was literally my pride and joy for many years back then because it was a truly crafted collection based on sheer obscurity and anticipation. Some of the best memories I have in a strange way!
thanks a lot! fun fact: this mix is exactly 60mins long (30mins and 30mins) because I released it on cassette tape (60min) back in the days...but since we only made about 20 tapes and sent the mp3 to a few people..only a few people listened to this mix 15 years ago...
I was a teenager through the 90's and " cut my music teeth" if you like on house music ( Sasha/ digweed , ect) . Old skool as in ALTERN8, ACEN, and Prodigy. ..,... Guitar bands, Pearl jam, pixies Blur, and Rage ect... And Hip Hop. Not any old bouncy crap. THIS TYPE. Real hip hop. Effin brilliant mix . Thank you. Very much..... More please..
interesting. And thanks. I recently listened to this mix again (stopped mixing 15 years ago...) and I still think this is the best transition of the whole mix (I also still like the O.C. - Alamo one). I don't remember why I came up with Blackrain after Foundation & Residue. It's not obvious at all - especially coming from the monotone sound of "Don't get it twisted" (overlooked B-Side, not a lyrical masterpiece...but it's got this special raw feel to it), you would usually choose something similar...
Wow, this is amazing! 15 years in the making - that's dedication. What was it like putting this mixtape together back then? 🎧 I'm loving the tracklist, especially "Escape From Belize." 😄
Thats what I call a 'Mix' - too dope! 💯Nowadays there is time code, controller, auto beat match and what is done: One song after the other, unmixed ... smh.
Thanks. Actually, I saw more and more similar mixes show up on in my YT algorithm. So I thought "Hey, I have this mix - why not upload it?". I then uploaded it 2 years ago and it had about 200-300 views for about 1.5 years...actually most of the mixes on YT just seem to be blended "playlists" to me...not the type of (real?) mix I know from the 1990ies...so one more reason to upload it..
Wow, what a blast from the past! This mixtape is pure nostalgia. I love the track selection - it's a great mix of classic hip-hop. What inspired you to put this out on RUclips after all these years? 😄
Wow, this is awesome! It's amazing how you've preserved this mixtape for so long. What's the story behind putting it together back then? Did you and Marc have a vision for the vibe of the mixtape? 😁
Thanks. no vision at all: basically it was to recreate one of my favorite radio shows form the mid 1990ies (Metissages HipHop on Couleur3) with similar tracks. The tracks had to be unknown, hard to find and not used to much on other mixes we knew. Of course judging from today, I would probably use half of the tracks again and change the other half (which haven't aged that good, I think...).
Ha, i discovered this mix on soulseek almost 10 years ago, it was labaled with the FTD group tag but i don't think they released it on the internet lol.
could you tell me what that means?! :) I used Soulseek like 20 years ago haha. I don't care if anybody is sharing our mix - but please at least give credits to who made it...
@@tomhaegler Well, i don't know if you're well versed in the online mp3 ripping scene. FTD is still an active mp3 ripping group which exclusively rips hip hop, so it was just named "VA - Side A / B - FTD.mp3" Then someone (dj HanDJob a.k.a. Deerhunta) told me that this mix is actually from two swiss guys.
@@doderiolarkisso4038 thanks for sharing this info! very interesting. I'm not that well versed - I know a bit but not any specific groups. I might have known then. But funny enough, "Deerhunta" does ring a bell. And now I remember my friend Marc (who I did the mix with) was a big Soulseek guy back in the days and I think he shared it there as well. Since youtube wasn't big yet and Soundcloud just started, the mix was mainly shared on blogs, I think. One blog even did an interview with us - forgot the name unfortunately. And yes: we are two Swiss guys :)
@@doderiolarkisso4038 Ha! A good friend of mine knew Alkuttraz. I did not know him personally but I think I talked to him once at Mono Records (where I bought "Escape from Belize" from this mix). About "Get Open": Around 1995 I used to tape record "Metissages HipHop" (with DJ Sebb, Baby Blu, Ron-T) on Couleur 3 every friday night. I was fascinated by the tracks SEBB picked - I even wrote a letter (!) to SEBB asking to name some of the tracks he played and where to buy them. They gave a shout out in the show but did not say anything about the music. For some tracks, I took years to find out who it was. I still have the tapes. "Get Open" I heard on this show as well - only once. It was to first and last time I heard somebody play it. I think I found it a decade later in NYC. The Foundation & Residue track "Don't get it twisted" was another one - took me years to even find out what it was. Haha, you probably know what I'm talking about. Gotta love the pre Internet/Shazam etc. era.
tracklist is in the description! Tracklist: 01. Cranium - Gauge 02. Walk With The Limp - Money Boss Players 03. Madman's Dream - East Flatbush Project 04.
