    Funny ..I just exhumed a 1971 XLCH 900 dual drum basket and had decided on the 'Sparkling America' theme.

    Super Clean. XLCH was the Kicker. My 73 was an XLH Electric Start. Electric Start comes in handy when you go for big inches like mine ended up with. Nice Ken.

    That is a nice bike but but it is neither a 1971 or 1000cc.
    1971 was the first year for the nose cone cam cover and notched rocker boxes which this bike does not have.
    1972 was the first year for the 1000cc.

    How many gears on this bike? I just hauled one home today. Has a hardball, ape hangers, springer front end and suicide shifter. Oddly to my surprise, the rear brake is left foot and right side is shifter. I'm use to a Right foot rear brake and left foot shifting. Could that be switched around?

      Not on sprortster. They are fairly oil tight when you use the proper seals.

      All Bikes made outside of Japan had right side shifters originally That was changed in the early 1970's

    • @brianadams1152

      Starting in 1975 U.S. Law required all motorcycles to shift from the left side.

    • @michaelhaddan1965
      @michaelhaddan1965 4 года назад

      I read something to the affect that the Sportster years with right side shifters came out in late '60s in competitive response to British and Japanese(?) racing bikes that always leaned left on tracks, so shifting was difficult. Mine is a 1970, has the right side shift. I could be wrong about this, but someone may know more. This Kaplan bike is masterful!
