- Today I'm getting into 6 ways in which owning a projector has changed my media habits and how I view content. This is a very powerful tool in a small package, and it gives me a big screen feel without the big screen. Let me know what you think in the comments!

I have large single pane windows in my apartment. I built insulated inserts and one fell out and broke my TV.
I couldn't afford another TV, so I got a projector similar to yours for about $70. I already had DVDs, hooked up a player and used the wall. It wasn't very bright, so I built a 5'x8' screen out of 1x2s and quarter inch plywood which works great. Upgrading a little at a time I purchased a Blu-ray DVD player, then a digital tuner and now an HDMI switch. With the switch I can view pictures from my digital camera.
I painted the screen with kilz primer which raised the grain in the wood. I hung it on the wall and even though the grain as well as the line where I added 1' was visible, when the picture shines on it they all disappeared. I now have a 112" screen that I didn't pay hundreds or even thousands for.

I love that term: “meaningful friction”. Mind if I steal it and profit from it? 😂 but seriously, I practice it myself, I just called it the less eloquent “voluntary hardship”. A quasi Buddhist concept.

Great point about being intentional about when and what media you are consuming. Set it up. Consume. Put it away. Reclaim the space.
How funny, I had the same projector for 3 years!! 😂😂😂 My wife and I bought it after getting married because it was the cheapest way to have a large “screen”. We also don’t watch regular TV so it has been perfect to spend quality time together watching movies and TV shows that we really want to watch. I loved this videos. I really identify with a lot of the things you said!
I've recently bought something similar and I have twins. The thing is when we were watching TV they were all over place loosing focus wanting to change and now when I setup the projector, they are almost laser focus, they sit down and just wait for the magic moment when we shut down the lights. That is a bit revolutionary, having almost a cinema at home even investing in the 4K monster projectors is better than 100" TV and I love cinema. That's why watching films on laptops it's a bit disrespectful and at the same time we have something amazing than in peak performance version cost the same as TV. Highly suggest everyone to buy one and start watching real films!
I have had the same projector here in Scotland for a good few years now. Works as good as the day I got it and never gave me any problems. Was looking over the last few weeks at upgrading it but its handy being able to put everything away in a box,( projector, cables, speaker,etc), when I am not using it. I use it mainly for football/ soccer but also for films. It was cheap and it works great.
I use a projector like your old one to mirror my computer screen. Native 1080p is required if you want to be able to read PC screen text on a textured wall. I control my PC from across the room with a little mini Bluetooth keyboard (with an integrated touch pad) .. about $23 on Amazon.
This has opened a whole new world for me. With my progressive lenses, and older age, it gets tiring "searching" for the best focus from my glasses when using a traditional display. It's much easier to see when the "screen" is 15 feet from me (distance vision).
I have been using a projector exclusively for 6 months and I love it. You can use it any where. And I second what you said about it not working well when it's sunny outside really reminding you to get out while it's nice.
When we first retired, the wife and I drove to Peoria every 2-3 weeks and spent a day watching movies. Theater's there opened at about 10am and we could take in 3-4 movies in a day by supper time. When I added up the cost, I made the case to her for our own projector. She said "no". Then I scored a very inexpensive used one. So guess who used it ALL THE TIME? The next Christmas we splurged and bought a good HD DLP Rec. 709 projector, surround sound system and 108" screen in cine gray. We were fortunate to have a room that was easily darkened - and by that I mean pitch black. It paid for itself in less than a year, and we appreciate being able to pause to use the facilities. I've looked at those pocket projectors to watch movies on the ceiling while laying in bed for those times when I'm too lazy to get up for the day. J/K. Projectors are fun - but if I could, I'd dial the calendar back to before tech. It was a lot more fun to play a game at the dining table, laugh and talk. Tech is a flipping headache.
Did you ever do the old version of "Movie Pass" when you could see a bunch of movies for like $10 a month?
@@markbajek2541 Wife had something like that to bring costs down. Seems like we spent $5/ea for movies as seniors. It was more for the snacks and drinks. We were 60 mi from Peoria, and I counted the time and cost of the entire trip. Ridiculous money - but - we were newly retired with little to do during cold IL winters. Not so any more. Like the OP notes, we can spread it out and watch intentionally now.
We've been livin' the projector life for more than 20 years. Ours is hanging from the ceiling but it's still requires more setup than just switching on a TV. Everything you said is true. We are far more selective with what we watch and we enjoy it a lot more. We rarely turn on the projector during the day.
I totally get this. I've always felt projectors make your viewing habits more intentional.

i took hand me down electronics for 7 yrs while paying off debt, including TVs. when everything was paid off i had a projector on my wishlist & waited till black friday to grab one & love it for all the same reasons you listed here. by the time i got it i was living on my own & had a huge blank wall in my apt that everyone kept telling me to fill & it ended up being my projection wall & i didn't waste money just trying to 'fill space'. im considering selling this one to get a smaller one so i can use it when i travel too. tnx for the recommendations!

When my son was very young we allowed him a small inexpensive projector (but not a TV) in his bedroom, pointed at the ceiling over his bed. During daytime, his room was too bright for the projector to be useful. So the sun itself helped us enforce the “no TV during the day” rule. We would watch a cartoon with him at bedtime instead (on non-book nights) Thank you sun, and cheap projector!

I own a mini projector as well, but purchased it for a bedroom setting while lying in bed. The results are amazing as the distance to the wall allows for a 10 foot wide projection without losing to much in overall projected brightness. Just to mention it… Play some old black and white content such as “The Monsters, Twilight Zone, etc.”. The overall experience was like seeing these old formats in HD. Simply amazing. BTW. I own the same mini projector, but be warned that the battery on these don’t last. Mine died , probably because I alway left the power cord plugged in. Now I always keep it unplugged as I’m worried about the built in battery shorting out, etc.
I found a 40 inch 10 year old LG TV at my favourite shop "La Strada" aka the roadside. It had loose backlight diffuser disks rattling around inside. A tube of superglue and a remote control I bought on the way home for 75 cents out of the clearance bin at a big box office supply store and I'm very happy.
My microwave broke at 8am and I resolved to keep an eye out for the spare parts I might need at La Strada again. By 11am and just 400meters down the street I was loading up a microwave that was virtually the same as mine and both clean and working. After 4 months my neighbours tossed out theirs and I got the parts I needed (door switch and fuse) to go back and fix my old one.
I was going out to buy a floor jack to help with some repairs my car needed and I got just 3 doors down the street and there was one far better than I would have bought. It had a loose castor wheel and needed some help freeing up the release mechanism.
My vacuum cleaner, breadmaker, leaf blower, car GPS, computer, and electric fans all came from La Strada. It's a great place to shop for both working stuff and things that need only simple things done. Like cleaning the clogged filters. I forgot to mention lawn mower, DVD/BluRay player, laser printer, several tool boxes and some tools, hard drives from obsolete cable TV boxes, coffee maker, luggage, and a very nice Swiss made Bernina sewing machine. And much more. And a projector although I already had one.
It is amazing what people throw out and boggles the mind sometimes to wonder why. But not everyone has the skills or willingness to wield a screw driver. And I just noticed a bicycle pump sitting next to me and the clock and radio on the desk.
Love the naming of La Strada! I have had so much luck finding stuff like that. I recently found an in box $280 food dehydrator!
Works like a dream for keeping you free from the "smart backdrop" !! Haven't had a television since '90 , but as i v.j. at times , projectors are a CONSCIOUS choice ! ace

can i connect my antenna on the roof to the projector like i do with my TV set ? I dont have cablevision. Dont need it. I have 130 channels here in NYC.

Glad you liked the video buddy! I get my films from backing them up mainly, from disc. And you’re right, pretty much any movie or show you “buy” online doesn’t actually allow you to own it, and it can be taken away. Backing it up from disc is a great way to go!
i have that same bulky white projector. was great but the fan got a little noisy.
I have that same giant boxy Pioneer stereo item and some tube tv's, but being horder meant downsizing to yet smaller and smaller items as to not run out of storage space in the garage and seemingly everywhere else, lol.
I dig that tiny tv you scored, maybe I can find room in the garage for this samsung 55" as a shop tv, or carry that tiny one around around to and from the shop, even in the car for a drive in theatre or the mobile office, but during daylight, is it bright enough?
You could clip it to the sun visor when the outdoors is in dark mode and pull up to any wall that has white paint on it, as long as its not showing any adult themed entertainment scenarios unless perhaps in the garage. Hmm...need a garage sale to park the car again.
Seems like a fun item. My tv has an off switch. So I can watch stuff intentionally too.

I booted up my old tablet, and recently watched a whole movie on it's projector. I watched Metropolis straight from youtube. It was an occasion
This video gave me reflection. Years back I only had a projector and it forced me to use it with intent due to light limitations. It broke and I did without, used laptop on occasion only. Then a mate gave me a 55 inch TV and I think it's a subconscious slow brain drain and mental health concern after watching this and pondering 🤦♂️

And the battery never lasts longer then the movie.
Yeah I have a Bluetooth speaker which I connect via aux sometimes, otherwise I’ll use my laptop and it’s speakers, or for the big move I Bluetooth my laptop to my hi-fi system!
The problem with those projectors is that the quality of the image is shit 😣 im too much of an image quality snob

I would guess that you can run an ok tv for the same wattage as the small tube tv.

Oh I know that it is a symptome of my cptsd… I have the morning routine but maybe a bit different, I heat water, grind the beans, take a plastic filter add some filter paper bamboo en poor the water and its been like that for the better part of my adult life Im 48, survivor , its a hard journey but Ive learned to appreciate the bad times as much as the good cause we’re not learning anything throug winning :)
Most of the time i watch media on a tablet. Once in awhile it be nice to have a big screen a projector. But i heard it could have some lag for video games more or less for some brands.
I think the best set up is say 32 inch oled not connected to the internet or with an Ariel. That way you can do DVD, usb in the dvd player etc. too much set up time with a projector unless it’s always ready to go and into a dvd player or maybe media pc.

I don't watch tv, though I do watch way too much RUclips content as a retiree. The ultrawide screen, connected to this gaming PC, is more than enough real estate for my less-capable eyes these days. Sound is through a Schiit stack (Modius DAC/Midgard headphone amp/preamp.)
My strategy would be getting an LCD television that's about 50 inch, and a blu ray player, and just getting blu-ray / DVD from the library. This way you have a large selection of things to watch, but you are still being more intentional ie: you have to select and aquire the media ahead of watching it and have to get up and put a disc into the player, so there is no mindless scrolling.
This is totally a good way to go!
This is an awesome idea, I hate how the tv is just in the way when it’s not on. Wait what do you do about the sound?
I either hook it up to a speaker via aux, or use the speakers on my computer if I’m lazy!
I consume movies and TV shows on my 11” iPad Pro… no tube tv or flat tv in my home…. And it has great resolution…. I have a tablet pillow where I put the tablet and put the pillow on my lap… and for surround sound I use over-the-ear wireless headphones… 🤷🏽♂

Didn’t know these small portable projectors were available, love to get rid of our TV as it takes up unnecessary space and we rarely use it and replace it with one of these.
i have 4K Epson projector. i paid like $2,000 for it. i only watch a movie that i really like to see on the big screen. i have 300” painted wall just for movie theater purposed., plus i got the Sonos surround sound system, i’m loving it but i still have to think twice before i will watch a movie.
I like projectors but not for minimalism. 😆 I do like that others can use them this way though. Hard to do with TVs.

Yeah I think I will make a comparison of a few models and a few things I like about each! My model is the best for the portability, but it comes at a price for speakers and inputs/outputs compared to larger models.

Can you hook this up to a Tablet, dvd player or PS3?
Yes you can! Hdmi in and you’re off to the races. I hooked my girlfriends iPhone 15 up to it with the usb C to hdmi dongle and it worked perfectly. Hope that info helps!

Brilliant, all of this. Your third or fourth point about projectors thriving in darkness speaks to the druid in me. It always seems wrong to be on any media when the sun's out.

As far as music I have my playlist that I have on Spotify that I wanna put on a secure drive then get rid of everything. Actually everything you talk about I want on a good secure thumb drive lol
Project onto the ceiling
A disadvantage to adding setup friction is the temptation to watch more than one thing because you already went to the trouble to set it up.
Yeah, once you overcome rolling resistance or maybe initial friction, the temptation is to keep on rolling. Still, it's not a deal breaker.
This is fair! When I first started using the projector when I lived alone I would leave it out with the screen up for a few days, but my girlfriend wouldn’t have it now lol. Plus I still could only really view at night (or in near darkness) so it was a good check even then.
Dude! We've been rocking the projector since 2013! Frugal only once in my case. The first and second ones were hand-me-downs from work. The third one? Way too expensive and really too big for the living room. Nonetheless, it works in 4:3 quite nicely. We painted the wall a bright white and left it empty. In my case, it supports 2 computers, a brand new Mac Mini and an old, decrepit Dell. I saw a projector in a pawn shop for $65 the other day. Looked about like your old one. They are out there and are a really nice display solution. Some day, I'll luck into a mini like yours and hang it in the middle of the ceiling. Wireless HDMI is now a thing. No wires / no worries!
Its about time I asked this: Why do we tent to prefer to see movies on a big giant screen?
Easier to see. You can sit further away from the source and have more people watching at once. Try watching a movie on a cell phone with more than one person, it is absolutely terrible.
Well movies are made to be shown on a giant screen. The director had the theater in mind when they directed it, so the choices they made reflect that. Same with the sound being surround sound.
When you watch on a small TV with built in speakers you lose some of the artist's original vision.
@@DIGITAL_DECAY.EXE_ I've thought about various ways but one if them is what you've mentioned. I think one thing it boils down to is the size of the screen depends on how many people are watching it.

If you're feeling adventurous you can do what I did with the same projector: add an old Raspberry Pi and a cheap USB remote to your shopping list
(I put everything in a small stylish wooden box by removing one side, total $40)
You can have the function of using a USB key and at the same time access files via WiFi on any PC you have available: there are a myriad of free software packages ready.
You can even watch content on RUclips or other online services directly.

I use unhook and youtube shorts block chrome extensions to hide distractions from youtube
Been there, done that. Cons: very expensive lamp purchase every 2500 hours of use, typically over a hundred dollars. Far more expensive to run per hour than an LED TV, judging by the heat generated and the fan noise.
Oddly, i've never really considered owning a projector before until now. Even with watching videos on RUclips, I prefer watching it on a big screen like my tv or at the very minimum on my PC monitor. Each to their own & all that, but i've never really understood spending long amounts of time watching things on small devices.
I was ready to criticize when I saw your 1990s setup😂, but the benefits of intentional viewing-psychologically and fiscally, is hard to argue with.
I think TVs are too big now. It seems more like a status or marketing thing (like big vehicles) because you can always sit closer to a smaller screen and get the same impact. Living rooms used to have little nooks where you sat around a fire or TV, not everything pushed back to the edges like today.
Also, some people's vision (like mine) doesn't take the picture in properly when the screen is too large.
Use an ALR screen to watch just about anytime.

Hey you're amazing, for you I'm really trying to re-do my life 😂😂
We use the same mindset for the last 3 years. Every movie that me and my wife watch is an event because of the preparation. Not to mention that you really fell that you are in the movie with a 2x2 meter “screen” in front. Also, we avoided to buy a TV because we were expecting to have a child and we were afraid that we might place him in front of the screen just to make him shut up easyer.
We used projectors and pc monitors exclusively about 15 years, ago.
It was awesome. But some key elements have changed.
Windows Media Player pc’s are extinct and Comcast blocked them anyway.
Bigger, flatter TV’s are cheaper and obviously more accessible at any given time.
Waiting on your to consider an Apple Vision Pro or other headset, for the largest of screens, wherever you want.
I believe there was a projector targeted towards kids in The 2000s. It was amazing

I seem to have found my "tech-brother"! I'm a moviebuff that's been collecting(physical! I even had a 16mm projector)for over 20 years now,cut my cable long time ago.I digitalised all my media from dvd/blueray/vhs&satelitte and have more than 160 Terrabyte of movies&series,some of them are even gone forever now because I always had the feeling:I want to" have"them and didn't trust those streaming sites futurewise.People laughed..now they come to me:Do you have that movie?PS:I also use a dumbphone!Peace!🙏

Projectors usually have speakers inbuilt into it.

Sorry for the delay buddy! I do either a Bluetooth speaker connected via aux, or my laptop speakers if I’m connecting picture via HDMI, or as a final blow I use a Bluetooth dongle I have to go from laptop to my hi-fi setup for huge sound!
A CRT TV uses way more power than a flatscreen. The projector is also energy efficient.

I thought projector bulbs used quite a bit of energy.

my projector has wireless mirroring, so setup really isn't a big deal, just hook it to power and that's it really...
I have one of the best OLEDs on a market as a TV/Monitors (I need real estate because i'm a dev, and a lot of real estate = a lot of code) and I still watch movies on my 600€ projector. As a filmofil is just something that panels will never achieve... I'ts not how big the picture is (ok, that's part of it)..it's something about being unperfect in a right way.

That vintage receiver needs to breathe. You’ll regret putting stuff on top of it one day. Those things are tough to replace and expensive to fix when they break, but worth keeping around.

i never pit my projector away. I watch everything on a 144 inch screen.
I wish it were easier to just listen to music. It is almost impossible to listen without using a screen. I live in a signal dead area with-no clear AM or FM. No OTA stations either.

Unfortunately unless you spend the big bucks most projects have poor quality then you need wall space or buy a projector “screens” and they aren’t that cheap, 1080 and even lower quality 4k tv’s aren’t that expensive nowadays, but do what it works for you
Agreed, but I just didn’t want the space of a TV dominating the room. Most people lay out their living room around their TV and not for facilitating conversation. I want the screen to be a secondary consideration, and I really don’t mind the quality loss. I appreciate the sentiment though and I think you’re right on the money about the practicality vs a lower priced flatscreen setup!

You seem like a nice guy, and made a good video, but I wanted to comment that it sounds odd to me when you say 'consume my media' or 'display my content', or 'media consumption'. I get that these are industry terms and are appropriate in that context, but I just would like to ask if this is they way you naturally speak, or if it's just for the video. None of my friends have ever invited my to come over and consume some media, and I don't think in terms of my media consumption. Perhaps you do, I'm just interested in language so if you have any reply it would be appreciated. It could be a generational thing, but we are both here on RUclips, and your beard is way more impressive than mine, so maybe not?
Yeah I’m not asking my girlfriend if she wants to consume some media after dinner or anything. But when we’re talking about the concept of how we choose to “watch films, listen to music, and use our smart devices for other apps”, then consuming media is a better way to describe those things as an umbrella term. Hope that clears it up

Yeah this teflonic slide into the arms of Big Brother can't be good for us. I'm viewing you on a fourteen-year-old MacBook Pro and I haven't owned a phone in this century, but my machines still aren't pure. It's probably good to put a bit of a slowing ritual into our entrances into the unclean world. People and animals die and are withered by our use of these machines, but we can use them for greater good, not pretending that they're clean. A sort of purification ritual feels right.

Projectors & TVs aren't for me. I much prefer to use my Samsung Tablet for my media consumption.
