    I knew subscription costs were out of hand when my university sent us an email saying they were suspending our access to all Adobe products because they switched to their subscription based model; needless to say, it is infuriating. It seems like everything useful now comes with a catch in order to get you to subscribe to something. I started building up my physical media collection again as a personal boycott against these silly changes. No way am I giving into a subscription, unless it is providing me some bang for my buck.

    Every year I try to watch 50 "new to me" movies I've never seen before. Very easily done with movies I've purchased myself or just going to my local library . I'm thankful that my library is always getting new releases every week. They have a lot of Netflix shows on dvd I never watched even when I was still subscribed to Netflix. It saves me money! I can use the saved money to go to the cinema. My favorite movies to see in theaters are action and horror movies.
    Most movies/tv series that have recent adaptations I most likely own the book or audiobook so I have been reading a lot more recently and the weather hasn't been too terrible yet here in Texas so I have been reading a lot in my backyard in my anti gravity chair. Very relaxing and it helps my everyday stress/anxiety levels.

    I have never had a subscription to anything. Grew up with and still have an antenna, and it is fine for me. There isnt a whole lot of originals on these streaming services that make me want to use them. So if im going to be scrolling and flipping through something to try to find something to watch, ill stick with the antenna. As for screen free activities, i love disc golf. Gets me out in nature, learning a new skill, and getting some excercise.

      That's great news Adam! I hope you enjoy the iPod and the physical media collecting! Audible is a pretty good subscription - I've had it from time to time and then would just cancel when I had enough books downloaded (you can keep the ones you bought after quitting). Good tip is to say you're going to quit and then they'll offer you a few months at half price subscription which I would do and then cancel after the price goes back up. Check if your local library offers Libby - it's a free audiobook and ebook rental platform that the libraries around here offer. Would be a great option if it's available in the UK!

    I despise most subscription "services" simply because they expect "service" money for what is essentially just a product. Adobe being a prime example. streaming services that focus on convenience are fine, but when it gets to the point that we no longer have the choice to buy the media outright and renting is the only option, NSO for example, I try to avoid caving into those trashy practices. *Some* people may come to the conclusion that a good VPN service is all they need for their media... for reasons lmao.

    The only subscription services I pay for are RUclips... and gaming (Currently only Final Fantasy XIV). It's not the cost, but rather the fragmentation and control that I hate about movie/TV streaming services. Just for the few shows/movies that I like to watch, I would need at least 4 services... meaning 4 accounts, 4 apps, 4 subscriptions... and remember which is which. And as for control... These services and their licensing deals control what content is available to watch... and there have been horror stories of shows disappearing mid-binge.
    I will stick to physical media (And my Plex server), Thank you Netflix (And others)

    Some excellent suggestions here - Cheers! I've got to ask though; if CanadaLand is that good a podcast that you feel it would be doing your viewers a disservice if you didn't mention them, well, obviously, that's a good thing. If it happens that you're being paid to advertise them (particularly if you would use them whatever the case), that too is fine - a man's gotta eat, right?! However, I don't know what Canadian law is on this, and if I'm implicitly wronging you, I apologize (it's my first time here!), but I think viewers would like it made explicit whether CanadaLand, or any of the other services mentioned here, are paying you (even if only 'in kind') for a plug. This viewer would, anyway! The opposite case also kinda goes - it surely can't hurt you, or your viewers/subscribers to let them know you _don't_ have a financial interest in any of the services you might mention, if that is the case!
    Anyway, sorry for being a 'Moaning Minnie'..!

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  5 месяцев назад

      That’s fair, I didn’t even think to disclose I wasn’t being paid or asked to mention them! They have no clue who I am, I have no affiliation with them, but I appreciate what they do and thought they were a good example of a service I choose to pay for. If I ever do a collaboration or deal with a brand I would always mention, but appreciate the call for clarification!

      Fwiw, I expect CanadaLand will be delighted with your endorsement. So fulsome were you with your praise, I cynically thought, "C'mon, no~one's _this_ enthusiastic!" The fact that you quite genuinely were, without a stake in the race, should give your recommendation all the more weight!

    If I could be bothered, I would cancel all but one streaming service and watch everything I want for a few months, then cancel and move to another one and repeat. I once calculated how much money I spent for Netflix vs how many movies I actually watch on there in a year and it worked out that I was spending about $5 a movie, which is about the same as one off renting them on RUclips or Amazon. If I went that route, I would at least be renting movies with more intention that aimlessly picking something on Netflix. I also have a bluray collection, so I love physical media but it can become a burden when you have over 1000 and the price of them keeps increasing - but again, its all about buying with purpose and intention and not throwing it away. Spend money on the things that bring you the most value.

  • @yazajin
    @yazajin 5 месяцев назад

    I never got on board with it really or ever saw the appeal of it. Maybe it helped not having the disposable income or having a money savvy family, or just everything I tried searching at times being fragmented all over the place, but never once have I been tempted by a subscription service beyond free trials. I've been building a DVD collection for about a year as well from cheap sources, which ultimately has probably worked out far cheaper, introduced me to new stuff and I can watch it again whenever I feel like it.

    Since we live in “the middle of nowhere” within a very hilly landscape, getting over the air TV took an investment in a much more expensive antenna ($300 total with the tv tuner). I think it’s good we have access to local as it happens news but overall, it was a let down. The good channels like Discovery are gone, no more Saturday morning cartoons, there’s an overwhelming amount of police dramas, reality tv, and 60s/70s sitcoms and a very…generous amount of healthcare commercials. What little prime time shows are left don’t really interest me. All in all it’s kind of sad to see a medium fall so low and just sort of limp by lamely. At least around these parts. But at least we can get the live thanksgiving parade a dog show again. I’ll be looking into library rentals in the future I think.

    The point you are not getting with the Apple Deals of Logic and Final Cut Pro: It just appears to be a good deal, but it actually binds you to apple products because Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X are only available for Macs. So with that limitation, Apple increases the chance that your next computer will also be a Mac.
    Of course, if you are convinced of macOS and Macs and you would've bought it anyway, thats fine and then it is a good deal. But if you are in a phase where you are comparing different options, you should be aware that by choosing Logic Pro X or Final Cut Pro, you choose to buy Apple Products in the future as well.

      @@spencers-adventures Awesome, glad you enjoyed Ran Prieur's essays! Keep up with great contents! Btw, stay away from Apple's software because it ensures vendor lock-in if you are planning to switch to open source stuff in the future (DaVinci is fine because it runs on Linux too)

      Thanks very much! I’m hoping to trial a Linux setup soon to see about moving over. I like my Apple workflow but I don’t like Apple so that’s an issue for me. Appreciate the suggestion, hope to make it a reality soon!

    I still use Windows Office 2007 on my Windows 10 and I didn't pay for either one of them. I think I'll keep using office 2007 even after upgrading to Windows 11. I don't see any point changing Office 2007 as long as it works. I'm thinking about getting rid of some of these TV subscriptions. The thing is that it's easy that once you sign up you forget and you just keep paying and paying. I did the same thing with Mid journey. I overpaid by $30 a month over 6 months but I only used it for 1 month. 😕
