I understand not everyone is ready and able to start just yet. But when you are, feel free to come back to Part 1 and go thru however many parts there are by then. :)
Thanks for the video. This comment is exactly where I’m at. I got my dad’s 1940s O scale. But studying, I need a G scale for the backyard and an N scale for inside. 😀
Just wanted to say THANK YOU my 4 year old grandson watches your reviews all the time , he loves his trains and would sit all day just listening to you if I let him .
I bought one set, I fell in love and started drawing up plans for a layout that could fit under a bed and since I've been saving for the remaining pieces of 2nd and 4th radius curves i need.
And... As if by magic... A Blue Rapier box appears! Love it. Looking forward to seeing a review on the 395.
Nice to see a layout starting to form!
What a great little video. Awesome work.
FINALLY! Can't wait to view the rest of the series Will
I Started with the 'Devon Flyer' set which was a brilliant little set and the locos detail for a starter was fantastic!
My first set was the virgin pendalino and i am very proud of it. Now i have 3 trains and stations and other buildings and some sheep, people, cars and a lonely tree. Great video well done. :-) looking forward to part 2 ;-)
great vid. its how i got hooked back into this. now my little train set is a model railway and still getting bigger.
Really great video cant wait to see the proper layout in all it's glory! U can bet on me to be watching every step of the way
Like you a starter got me back into the hobby - the Flying Scotsman and a GWR tank loco set - I too recommend them and the basic locos I find very useful still for testing track etc whilst building the layout, it doesnt matter if they get dusty or take a few knocks as opposed to using a super detailed new loco which I dont want to expose to those conditions.
awesome cant wait to see more vids for the new layout keep them coming
Although I'm not a model trains enthusiast so to speak as I have never had any proffesional models or any at all except when I was young and had a small loco, one or two coaches and waggons and a bit of tracks and that's it, I find your videos inspiring. Great job and I admire how you can demonstrate your passion in your videos. It would be great if I could get back to this hobby one day (and afford it of course) ;) Keep up the good work.
watching this kind of brings my child hood to life kind of makes me want to get back into the hobby considering it right now.... thanks :)
I started about a 2 years ago with the midland star set from hornby now i have all the track packs and a digital layout! Love the vids
I personnally would recommend the Blue Rapier train set from hornby as it is a great set to get yourself into the hobby and this was my first set and i got this at christmas and am already making a layout plan and how much room i will need , this set definatley makes the hobby Magical!
"what to make it bigger and have more fun" LOL great video, faved
Love Watching your Videos Subscribed since Last Year Things have Really Changed! Really Been waiting for this series for ages! Keep Making Videos -Adam!
i have been waiting all my life for this video
Your right model railways is not an cheap hobby as I have found out. But it’s still an awesome and rewarding hobby.
Would appreciate your view on THE MAJESTIC starter set. Bought it two years ago and still unpacked waiting my venture into model railway after 45 years.
Great! if its in the prologue it'll be just in time for mine to arrive!
haha excellent! That's such a cool thing to open and be surprised by lol
Good to see you mentioned daughters later in the video.
It is worth a try to give them the option. Most of them won't be interested, but it is good for the future of the hobby to get more women into the hobby.
Shared interests are a great way to make a strong relationship, so for the sake of the hobby, share your geeky/nerdy hobbies with your daughters as well as your sons.
Well done.
I am 13 and my first starter set was the collier set with a small loco and 1 passenger coach and some wagons and ever since I have bought 3 more starter sets and also bought the evening star and a more varied 1960's freight wagons. starter sets are very inspirational. I have loved trains since I was 3. when I was 6 I got a starter set for my birthday which i loved and I went out with some of my birthday money and brought another it was fantastic. I totally agree with you about this video.
Fantastic! The First layout i got was the Flying Scotsman Train set with 4 Coaches & 2 Wagons!
'...buying it for you son..' Or even daughter! Haha! Good vid, keep up the good work.
haha thanks - they're for whenever I go somewhere to do with trains now!
Love it. Getting the Blue Rapier set on Monday for my Birthday!! :0) Let the planning commence!!
Great video Will....very informative & especially for the newbies to the hobby! Well presented & humerous in parts too! Looking forward to further parts. Cheers, John.
PS. BTW, love your train..ers!
Awesome video because I'm planning on building a small railway in my basement, on my Air Hockey table with an engine from the Pennsylvania Railroad. Keep up the good work!!
Okay, it's my wife's ROKU account, but that is not me. I wonderful way to start out a fine, life time hobby. I applaud you efforts. Thank God the chap is English, us Americans are not always clear in our speech. Enjoy! Good way to explain. Nicely done.
you give awesome railroading tips
thank you for the feedback! I hope you like Part 2 too
yep got my first train set when i was 7, been hooked ever since.
You are spot on! The Midnight Freight is the most important set I have, technically lol
"Want to make it bigger and have some more fun?"
Cheesy Grin on your face ;) haha I smiled (:
Excellent stuff Will!
Very good video Will! Liked! My first loco, or starter set should I say of course being 4472 Flying Scotsman back in 2003 on Christmas day :)
AHHHHHH NERD3 OLD MUSIC HE USED SOMETIMES! MEMORRIIIIIIIIIES. Great video Will, helping me get back into it, after THREE diffrent layouts were built and still exist (no space to put them in anymore which sucks) But thinking of making a small portable double track just to run them on that i can bring with me anywhere i go.
A great video......keep up the good work......it's getting me hooked~~
If you shop around, starter sets can be fantastic value. The complete set can be considerably cheaper than the sum of there parts. Also a good way to collect trains while your track stock grows.
Yup!! Cracking set and a very good runner :0)
I bought a basic Pug 0-4-0ST once, now it is one of the more detailed locos in my collection. :)
That is a very nice set indeed!
haha thanks for the comment! I promise the Summer will be filled with vids.
thank you for the comment! Well they're easily my most popular vids too, starter sets are.
My first set was the Queen of Scots. It came with a tender driven A4 pacific called the Golden Plover with three pullmans. Then I got my first pannier with three dapol wagons on their own from the Dapol exhibition in Llangollen
Well explained Will! I am about to start my proper layout very soon and have done the plans its just a case of making it happen now, with the help of my grandpa who has a large LMS layout who made me want a proper layout, plus it hurts after a while of sitting on the floor all day hahaha XD
Another good thing about starter kits is that generally speaking, the wiring and motor are pretty simple with these locomotives so wiring DCC is pretty easy. One of the first locos I added a decoder to was a loco that I got from a starter set.
Looks great mate love the opening reminds me of the 70s even thow I was Bourne in
Awesome dude that’s amazing and helpful too thanks
Unfortunately not. They've made a shop in Chirk though & whenever I'm down there on holiday, I try to get a kit there
You can’t go wrong wither starter sets or train packs. I always wanted from Bachman there Jinty starter set, with the BR 3F Jinty. With the two BR maroon coaches or the GWR goods train. With the 57xx pannier. But I will be buying for sure this year the midnight metropolitan set from Bachman it dose come with a loop it will go nice as a future layout with my Peco set track set that’s something worth looking into will as well. Good Video once again.
My first starter set was the Bachmann "Challenger" with CN #9162 EMD F9 with a 70- Ton 4 Bay Open BN Hopper, A SOO LINE Gondola, And A CN 36' Wide Vision Caboose #79355, And A Circle Of Steel Alloy Ez-Track. Still have it... Loco is just barely hanging on.. still works but stutters at points.. its a vintage set and you can't find it anywhere not even online
thanks for the feedback and yeah I mean anything you can use is good really!
the effects in this is brilliant will! :D great video!
JOHN. D. C.
The first starter set was the early 1950's Triang Jinty 0-6-0, open wagon and van with a basic oval of Standard (Series 2) track and a battery controller.
I started with the Triang Hornby 1971 "Ready for electric" large clockwork starter set which had a clockwork 0-4-0, bolster wagon, drop side wagon, open wagon and tanker wagon with an oval of Super 4 track and a level crossing. In 1972 I added a Triang LMS Jinty and power controller, 2 x points and more track.
Triang, Triang Hornby and now Hornby have always done starter sets.
I think the start was brill!
YES!
You can run a Bachmann locomotive fitted with an ESU DCC chip, hauling Hornby rolling stock on, on Peco track, with a Lenz DCC Set.
They are norms for things like track gauge/code, couplers, DCC etc.
If you go for 16.5mm gauge (HO/OO) two rail DC/DCC, you can run trains from all over the world aswell (It is by far the most common system).
I love how exciting you looked intercity82 of the blue rapier
They are the premium coaches, I'm sure of it. It's quite an exquisite set I think! Dcc ready is not a problem. It just means it is a DC train, and when you want to make it DCC in the future, it will be easy to do so.
Awesome video mate... haha loved the voice over and acting ;) lol
Great Video!
Surely part 2 is overdue?
CultOfRevan98 a little bit btw welcome to 2017
Great vid as usual. Lolol so funny.
thank you for the comment! I promise to fill the Summer hols with them too.
Vitrains, Heljan Hornby and Bachmann track, locos, rolling stock, and scenery all work with each other, so you could have a layout with Hornby track, Vitrains locos, Heljan coaches and Bachmann buildings and tunnels!
I understand, I'm 58 and skint! Although as I've been into model railways a long time, I generally have an eye for what's good for the price. There's a lot of choice for all pockets, and IMHO starter sets are not the only way of getting going in the hobby.
This video is so inspirational it has reminded me how good starter sets are and that I ones drooled over the site of the Royal scot set in the window of a model shop around 3 years ago , I wonder if you can still get it now ?
WILL WILL WILL you have done it again another amazing video
Oh wow!!! That's ace! :)
I'm very new to your channel and I like what I see :)
Great video
4:14 and below is the starter set that started the hobby for me :)
Thanks for the kind comment! Vids have started again
Wow best 14 minute series ever!
(Really though this is good and you need to make more!)
Looking at this a second time it really reminds me of my first train set when I was 7 (I'm 12 now lol!). Also, please IC82 I'm begging you please make another one!
hehe I love to hear how everyone gets into the hobby. So long as we get in, it doesn't matter lol
7:44 All aboard the Simplon-Orient Express! Making stops at Stamboul, Belgrade, Venice, Paris, and London! Featuring premium coaches built by the Compagnie-Internationales des Wagons Lits, this train has all the comforts of home, while you're away from home!
thank you my friend! Bratchell Models? A 321? Where do they run? IS that the one that runs between Crewe and Manchester???
would the new alstom virgin pendolino be a starter set?
To be honest, any starter set is good. The Pendolino is definitely a very nice one to begin with.
So thats what you look like! lol. Very enjoyable. All the best.
For anyone that is interested about this, I received today my Orient Express r1162 set from hornby and the coaches unfortunately are not the premium ones. They still have great detail but they don't have internal lighting. The merchant navy class locomotive is stunning though!
haha thanks for the comment! Part 2 is imminent and there will be about 500 parts in total - spanning more than 5 years.
lol it is part of Series 4 which I am working on. Follow me on Twitter for updates. Getting tired of answering the same question over and over now!
VERY well spotted!!! The entire of this series is being filmed in HD - moving to full HD soon.
True, but it gives you a place to begin with. Not many people stick with an oval for long. My little cousin had expanded the oval into something 3 times the size by New Year's day and only got the set for Christmas lol
All true but this Part 1 of the series is primarily aimed at people who literally own nothing. Part 2 very quickly moves along into designing a nice, big, proper layout with flexi-track sweeping curves, scenery and so on. I hope you like Part 2.
lol awesome vid man!
ive just got the city industrial set and the industrial shunter but trains are axpensive and i dont have much money to do anything to it what should i do
Enjoy it, so right. You don't have to keep growing the layout either or spend way too much. Nothing wrong with keeping the layout small, the track mat is of a good size with instant scenery. Add its stations and buildings and you will have a nice small layout.
I just got the Caledonian belle what do you think I should do with the set
A Good one is the Mixed Goods Set. Two Locos and a few wagons is heaps to get u started in this hobby
haha thanks for the comment! Part 2 is due anytime now
Nice set!! I think I remember seeing that set on sale somewhere. And Dapol! Are they still in Llangollen? Or just down the road from it?
awesome vid :D
I think the music info is in the video description towards the bottom.
I love hornby so much. I am 12 and I found this a great deal of help. Thanks :)
Thank you so much. You made me get back into model railway. But I have a problem. I have the most basic controller. I can't run my Evening Star and Class 8F in, but I don't want to waste my money. What should I do?
