Well done! As usual you produced a QUALITY video with super clear instructions! Will, YOU ROCK! We (hubby and our 3 1/2 year old son) watch you all the time and you bring a lot of joy to our household! Thank you for creating such great, clear and informative (and well-produced and edited) videos.

Well, the moment you opened up the page on Fiddlers Ferry, I recognised the layout straight away, I used to live across the fields from that Power Station. I used to walk along the canal and the foot path towards Widnes. I would watch the coal trains come and go, many years ago, been away from the UK for almost 12 years, I now live in the Blue Mountains in NSW Australia . I am in the first stages of getting back into model rail. Really enjoyed this video , well done sir!

As per usual a very simple straightforward to the point video, this is what I like about your videos will, yes I know everyone is dying for the next instalment but hey it will come in due course, 2 thumbs up. My inspiration was simple, picked my home town, researched track plans, studied the original location, searched threw old photos and then used SCARM (SCARM is a free downloadable railway planner, and very very good at that) to try get the best results for how to incorporate into the space I had available, but just remember everyone Rome wasn't built in a day and by the time you may build and dare I say finish your layout there will already be the next layout plans started flourishing in your head.

Looking forward to the following episodes, Will. If anybody is looking for other sources of inspiration, I would suggest attending model railway exhibitions. Not all layouts are grand club exhibits; there are many built by individuals to fit into limited space.

    My answers to your questions:
    1. End-to-end for realistic operation, but with loops at each end so it can run continuously when I just want to watch trains run...
    2. Present day.
    3. My spare bedroom. It will be modular so I can move it to my attic in the future and build more modules and have a HUGE layout. I need to insulate and run the A/C to my attic before that happens, tho. And like yours, I get to my attic with a ladder, so I'll want to have a proper stairway built up to it, which will cost mungo buckazoids.
    4. I'm not too skilled at building things yet, and no way am I gonna paint over a $300 locomotive to "weather" it, so not super detailed realism.
    5. HO scale, but I want some British locomotives, too.
    6. Generally the northeast USA, but no specific location.
    7. DCC with sound.
    8. Plywood base modules with foamboard on the plywood, then laying track and scenery on that using styrofoam and plaster. I might have a module with a deep gorge, so more fancy construction techniques will be used for that particular module.
    9. ...
    10. Moving all the storage boxes and clutter from my spare bedroom to my basement so I can start building my first module.

I dont really like weathering locos either. I'm a beginner but if I wanted a weathered one I'd buy it that way. But I think wagons have to be weathered imo. It makes everything look so much better

In case you haven't thought about an "empties in/loads out"( or loads in/empties out) system for your coal operation, do look into it. It means never having to manually load and unload the hopper cars. It will mean buying 2 of every car number, but after a while, people tend to tire of having all that busy-work.

I just watched so many books I recognized and thought "did you just nick my book shelf" lol :-) this is helping me alot as I have pretty much followed the steps :-) I'll be having my layout in the garage, I have decided to set it on a fictitious preserved railway situated in the midlands (so the majority of the loco's will be LMS and GWR :-) ) it's gonna be awesome, also you IC82 were an inspiration with your fantastic channel:-)

  • @grahamsopp

One really good tip is to design a complex layout you can build in stages, but put in the bits you will need later, from the start. So if you have a single loop, but plan on a double, make sure not only the base is large enough, but put in the points that will connect the two - then play with the one loop, until you can afford to add a second. if you just design and make a simple layout it's surprising how much you have to scrap when you want to expand it. been there. done that :(

Ggaming2000, depends whether the garage is air conditioned and heated as well. Model railroad layouts don't like large swings in temperatures anymore than a real railroad. It would be best to enclosed the garage and add air and heat. My layout is small, a 4x6 feet layout not any larger than a Hornby Track mat located in my smallest bedroom. Size isn't everything, small layouts are swell too.

As a historical miniatures wargamer who watches your channel primarily for the scenery/terrain building content, I was outraged... outraged I say... at your characterization of the Roman occupation of Numidia as "boring". The account of Scipio's adventures in Africa written by Julius Caesar is one of the most gripping parts of his history of the Roman Civil Wars, and possibly the most accurate (since the rest of the book seems have every city in Italy surrendering and apologising profusely as soon as Caesar rides within 10 miles of the front gate). All this shilly-shallying about with freight trains carrying sweets and talking tank engines with smiley faces has clearly turned your brains to mush. Buck your ideas up, young feller-me-lad!
:-D All joking apart, I really enjoyed this video. It's fascinating and sometimes really useful to see how things are done in "neighbouring" hobbies. Looking forward to seeing this series progress. Keep up the good work.

I have heard of people making a layout of a real station and then using a real timetable for running the locos on but I have yet to find anywhere or any site that shows me these old timetables. I wanted to know as I am interested in modeling LNER railway locations and would like to do a model version of Hitchin. If anybody can locate me to a site or anything, let me know.
