Touch of Grey was the first song the Grateful Dead performed live after Jerry recovered from his diabetic coma, in 1986. He basically had to be taught to play guitar all over again. Carlos Santana and Merl Saunders were instrumental in his recovery.
I’m a big fan of reaction music videos. Seeing people enjoying great, classic songs for the first time brings me joy! It keeps them alive and fresh and makes people smile (or cry). Having younger children enjoying these songs, all the better! Keep it up! 😊🎶❤
I love to see the young man getting absorbed in the music. I was younger than him when the Dead hit in the 60s! Great stuff...love to see more, but education is the top priority!
Thanks for your comment! Yes mostly focused on my kids and friends kids school topics as well as life skills but plan on doing more reaction videos in future. It’s hard because my kids already hear so much of this music from me so I’ll have to find stuff they’ve never heard before and/or have a unique music video.
Couple of things 1) Jerry Garcia was not the only lead singer, Bob Weir shared the primary vocal responiblities with help from the keyboardists Ron "Pigpen" McKernin and Brent Mydland. 2) The band lost keyboardists so often it inspired the joke about drummers in "This Is Spinal Tap." 3) Bobby Weir quit high school and joined the Dead full-time. 4) Stanley Owsley, not an official band member, but a character onto humself, solved the feedback problems in concerts and is imotalized by the dancing bears. 5) The Grateful Dead's name came from an old folk tale where a traveler is rewarded by the spirits when he paid for their burials.
Just FYI, The Grateful Dead started in 1965 and were very popular in the late 60's and throughout the 70's. However, this song was released in 1987 and was their only top ten single. As a result, their popularity surged. They were the top grossing concert act in the late 80's and early 90's. Quite durable.
We had music appreciation time she was and still is a child of the 80s whenshe was 5 first cincer MY friend s band MEN WITHOUT HATS check out SAFETY DANCEand ur girl will love the POP GOES THE WORLD 🌎 BY THEM ALSO tThe butterfly Ball is real different dont know if people ever saw it i taped ALL the videos in the 80 good luck enjoy the ride 🎉
As a side note on the T Shirt worn by your daughter, the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan did a tour together in 1987, i remember because I saw it in Philly at the now demolished JFK Stadium, one of about 50 of their shows i wet to from 1980-1995. They went all over the U.S. and ended on the West Coast, a true merging of titanic talents, and a lot of great music. Welcome aboard the bus.
Before the dead toured with Dylan as his back up band, they toured with him and Tom Petty. First, there was a complete Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert. Then a complete Bob Dylan concert, Then a complete Grateful Dead concert. Made for a nice day.
I'm a child of the sixties. And those times were the greatest times to be a teenager for a multitude of reasons. Let's just say that everything following 1962 were my favorite times ever until everything vanished in 1970. As far as the GD go, they are and will always be my favorite band. I met them. Danced onstage to them. Stayed in hotel for weekend with them...Homeschool- DO THE MATH!!
The song was on MTV, heavy rotation, became The Grateful Dead only number one song. I saw them back in the mid 70s, with Jefferson Airplane they played about 3 hours, The Dead played 4 hours
Thanks for the feedback! I definitely plan on doing more in the future and using someone else’s suggestion, I’ll ask kid their thoughts on music/ video afterwards. Hard part is my kids already know a lot of old music but I’d like to find songs they may have never heard before that also have interesting music videos appealing to kids.
Good to see you are covering the important stuff in your home schooling! I'm not being sarcastic! i'm serious. Including the Grateful Dead is a very forward position as the band is very forward thinking, too. Remember: The Music Plays the Bant!"
Thanks yes we try to cover all grounds at home from regular school subjects, home ec, life skills, religion, and old music for sure. Kids love BeeGees, Leo Sayer, The Band, etc. 😊
Jerry Garcia was heavily influenced by bluegrass music in his youth, and it shows in many of their songs. I've always liked how they changed the lyrics from I will get by, I will survive, to we will get by, we will survive, at the end.
The 60s and 70s were decades of change. The Kennedy assassinations and MLK, The Civil Rights Act and movement, the Vietnam War and the antiwar movement. Much of this was documented in the popular music of the times. To experience the music is to embrace the times.
Yes thanks for feedback. Next time I do a similar reaction video, I’ll definitely give her or different kid the opportunity to explain their thoughts afterwards. Thanks! 😊
I disagree. This was my first introduction and now has a special place in my heart which if I had listened to their earlier stuff, this song would be too much pop for my liking. Now she'll really get to explore Grateful Deads amazing catalog and live concert footage.
Love the Dead. Not a big fan of this song. Brent did not get by, he did not survive. And neither did Jerry. Having said that, Skeleton Brent on the keys is hilarious looking.
I like you guys right away. In 2023 if you're not home schooled you will just end up being indoctrinated at public schools that pronouns and race is more important than reading, writing, and arithmetic. Art, music, free thinking is NOT what's taught in school these days, only let's lower the standards so we look good. I respect your family. - Mike in Commifornia.
Thanks so much for the comment! Yes homeschool is the only option for us especially nowadays. Wife was homeschooled as well so she’s an expert! Thanks again for the support!
It's always fun to play kids songs from the good old days.

Thanks yes I plan on sprinkling in reaction style videos more in the future. Main focus of this channel though is elementary education.
I never knew Mr. Homeschool was a deadhead! I like the educational videos better - but that was cool to catch her first reactions on film.

Just came across this .. was great. … I think teaching younger generations about music is great .. hope you keep this up
Thanks! Yes I plan on doing more of these in the future. Perhaps diving into specific genres and history.
Music is a universal language ❤️

Weren't they at Woodstock as well 🤔
we were on our way to Ventura to see them, when heard Jerry Garcia died, his last song...I'll have it played my funeral ..

Wow you saw a Dylan & the Dead show?! 🤩
Saw that tour too but in DC. it was a very hot day. People passed out, but Dylan never took his leather coat off and a great time was had by all.

Those are stories you tell your grandchildren ❤

Great story, thanks!! 😊
Every word is true!@@MRHOMESCHOOL
In my opinion the best music came from the 60s and 70s 🤘
The song was on MTV, heavy rotation, became The Grateful Dead only number one song. I saw them back in the mid 70s, with Jefferson Airplane they played about 3 hours, The Dead played 4 hours
Wow, what a great long show!!
Love how the kid is wearing a Dylan shirt 🍄🌁🍄
Was hoping to hear her honest thoughts on the song and vid at the end.
Thanks for feedback! You’re absolutely right, I’ll definitely do that moving forward. This was my first time doing a reaction video. Great idea!! 😊
Awesome!!! More music reactions would be sick 🔥🔥

Saw them in '94, Sting warmed up for them, don't remember much of the show though...
😂
Right On
Love the girls' t-shirt. Long live Dylan!
Thanks! Yes big Dylan fan here!! 😊

Listen to Ripple. A very spiritual and positive song.
Yes one of my favorites. Only chose this as kids first dead song since it has a fun video to watch along with it. Thanks!

It would have been nice to hear her reaction to the song and the video
Yes thanks for feedback. Next time I do a similar reaction video, I’ll definitely give her or different kid the opportunity to explain their thoughts afterwards. Thanks! 😊
must be getting early the clocks are running late
You must be doing a decent job of homeschooling because she pointed out something to you that you missed! haha God Bless!
Thanks! She knows a lot of older music. My kids love everything- Dion, Leo Sayer, Hall & Oates. 😊
Well keep up the good work!
why not introduce her to "Sugar Magnolia" - ruclips.net/video/8VK5Fr7uzkA/видео.htmlsi=AbwMqU5qHHBwj0WD&t=7198
JERRY GARCIA LIVES
Play some Beatles for her, then a little Bread, and go from there!
Thanks. Yes, my kids love Beatles but I don’t think I’ve played my Bread record for them yet. 👍🏻
we ate the acid
😂
Yeah no. No one's intro to the dead should be a video of anything other than Dead Ahead or GD movie. Watch how many people agree.
Agree that this is definitely not one of my favorites of theirs but video is fun and appealing to kids with the skeletons. Thanks for the feedback! 😊
