Here in 2023/2024 we are just scratching the surface of ai programming and just beginning to talk about the possibility of sentient robotics. Yet all the way back in 1986 they made a movie about just that! A robot with enough memory space and the ability to learn and self diagnose its own health (diagnostics) ,had the potential to eventually learn enough to become a self aware sentient being that then falls into the human rights category. Literally damn near 50 years ahead of its time ...

I have very fond memories of this movie. I definitely think one of my first crushes was Ally Sheedy's character Stephanie.
I saw it in theaters with my Dad when I was 11.
For some reason I still remember listening to Peter Gabriel's new song at the time Sledgehammer in the car on the way home.
    I suddenly feel old.
You can clearly see the character Wall-E's appearance took some inspiration from Johnny-5

As a teen when this came out a) the line about getting the grass out went way over my head (I lived a sheltered life :P ), and b) as an Aussie, this was the first time I discovered there was a product called Dr Pepper. It took ages to get some context (not the first time for a movie with Steve Guttenberg), given how long I had to wait for there to be an internet. :D Still remember loving the movie.

A lot of the filming locations were up and down I-84 in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. Vista House is the most obvious one, but the Bonneville Dam was used for Nova Robotics, obviously parts of Astoria, and as an odd continuity error, the lunch wagon chase to the marina is in Cascade Locks (I’ve run under that low clearance tunnel as part of the Bridge of the Gods Half Marathon).

"No Shit, Where see Shit" is the line I've quoted the most from this film. I don't even have occasion to use it, it just pops out. Actually no, it's "Franky, You broke the Unwritten Law."
